SEPTEMBER 2013

Christ Lutheran Church • Highlands Ranch, CO • Gathering † Gifting † Sending

The annual Oktoberfest festivities include dancing, theme baskets, drinking German beer and wine in our Beer Garden and eating brats, pork tenderloin, potato salad, beans and all the fixings. Please invite all your friends to this great evening! Advanced admission tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children. At the door tickets cost $12 for adults and $6 for children.

Saturday, October 5th, 6 pm

We need donations of brats, sauerkraut, baked beans, potato salad, pop, water and dessert. If you are interested in helping make this the best Oktoberfest ever, please mark the response sheet or call Debby at 303-791-0803.

Theme Baskets for Oktoberfest The Theme Baskets were such a hit last year, we are starting early so there won’t be such a mad rush at the end to decorate them. Some of the baskets last year and/or ideas of possibilities include: children’s books, chocolate, High Tea at the Brown Palace, a football party, wine, going to college, books, movies, sports, car supplies, tea pot and tea, stuffed animals, kids makeup, spa day, winter warmth, dinner and a movie, and many more. You can donate all of the fixing’s or just a portion of a basket. We have had baskets donated by groups, such as the Choir, Women’s Book Club, MOPS, Rejoice Circle, Agape Circle, Crossroads Band, council and confirmation group just to name a few. Families and individuals also give many of the baskets. If you are interested in donating a basket, please sign the response sheet and bring in everything needed for the baskets, as soon as possible. If you are donating a basket and are able to decorate it as well we would really appreciate it. Just bring everything into Debby’s office.

Decorating Theme Baskets If you are creative and have time to decorate Theme Baskets for Oktoberfest this year, we are in great need of your help. Please contact Debby in the office, or sign the response sheet.

Oktoberfest Workers Needed We are in need of volunteers to help with setting up, serving, cleaning up, selling tickets, and cooking for the event. Please sign the response sheet if you are interested.

Supplies for the Kitchen Oktoberfest is coming and we are in great need of forks, napkins, paper towels, big sturdy paper plates, little plates, little cups for lemonade, big red cups for drinks, zip lock bags all sizes, large trash bags 33 gallon, napkins, stem less plastic wine glasses and aluminum foil. Please leave any donations in the kitchen.

September – A Labor of Love! Wow! Here we are and here we go! Another fall season of starting up school and programs! September begins with Labor Day Weekend! How appropriate for what is to come; a day of rest to honor Labor as well as a call to “roll up our sleeves” and get to work! The second Sunday is Rally Day – the restarting of our Sunday School engine! There will be fun, gift for the kids and Sunday Sundaes! We need volunteers for Sunday School! Please contact Becky Tesch at clchrsundayschool@ gmail.com. Adult University restarts on Rally Day meeting in the Sonrise Room at 9:30a.m. beginning with a study on the book of Psalms. A Thursday Class is in the works so stay tuned. Please wear a name tag on Rally Sunday. The following weekend we will have our annual book sale which will span two weekends. This third Sunday of September will also be Ministry Day Sunday where we highlight many of our congregational ministries with in the congregation. There will be another series of New Member Classes starting on Sunday, 12 noon, September 15th followed by Tuesday the 17th 6 p.m. and finishing Sunday, September 22nd at 12 noon. Please come hungry for a meal and the information about CLC! Sunday September 22nd will be Mission Sunday where we focus on our ministries that extend beyond our congregation into our community and throughout the world! We will receive new members by baptism on Sundays September 8th and 22nd and our newest new member class on the last Sunday, September 29th. See what I mean about a lot of work! But all a Labor of Love! (Be prepared for October by this time! Oktoberfest is October 5th! P.S. Don’t forget your church when you are absent from worship! + Many Blessings + See You in Worship + Pastor Tom

Thrivent Choice Update

There has been a change in the program by which Thrivent members direct their Choice Dollars. The program now requires you to designate CLC as a recipient of your choice dollars, each time those dollars are available for designation. This is a change from the former policy, where you could maintain a standing designation to CLC. To direct Choice Dollars in the future, you have two options:

Blessing of the Animals

As autumn arrives, people in various places may notice something odd... a procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, are led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of Pets. This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. Today there are over 62 million pets in the U.S. which attests to the continuing affection we have for our furry, feathered or finned friends. Pets are true companions. The bond between people and their pets is like no other relationship because the communication between fellow creatures is at its most basic with humans and animals. No wonder people enjoy the opportunity to take their animal companions to church for a special blessing once a year. Church is the place where the bond of creation is celebrated.

• Log in to Thrivent.com/thriventchoice and select "Get Started." When prompted, enter Christ Lutheran Church, Highlands Ranch, CO as your recipient • Contact a representative from the Member Connection Center at 800-847-4836 and, when prompted, say "Thrivent Choice." When next prompted, say, "Choice Dollars." Directing Choice Dollars® is subject to the Terms & Conditions of the Thrivent Choice® program. We urge all Thrivent members to continue to direct their Choice Dollars to Christ Lutheran Church. These funds have been extremely helpful to many ministries at CLC. Thank you!

Christ Lutheran will celebrate the Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 6th at 1:00 p.m. in the grassy area near the main doors. Bring all of your pets for a blessing and a treat. All are encouraged and welcome! Please sign the response sheet and join us.

News From the Preschool Welcome back to school!

Hello from downstairs and we hope everyone has settled back into the school routine. We are very excited to be back and in full swing. We are very blessed to have so many children here to learn about God’s love and have fun! September brings two Chapel themes; Two Small Coins and The Farmer’s Seeds, hosted by Mr. Gary. Our storyteller also returns with exciting adventures to share and we will be getting our pictures taken. And, parents will get to visit with their teachers for goal planning. Thank you for your continued support and have a great month! - Deb and Blair

Christmas in July!

Please keep the Sunday school in mind when out shopping for school supplies. We are in need of glue sticks, markers, play dough, pencils, small notebooks and staplers. These items are also great to stock up for our Pueblo De Dios mission at Christmas when we do a creative Christmas. Contact Becky Tesch at clchrsundayschool@gmail.com with any questions.

Pastor DJ’s Message

Sunday school will be starting back up the week after Labor Day on Rally Sunday, Sept 8th. Volunteer positions are starting to fill up for teachers and thank you for the amazing response! We are currently filling teams for teachers! Sign ups are also open for helpers please see sign up in the narthex. If you would like to be on a team please let Becky Tesch know at clchrsundayschool@gmail.com or sign up in on the sheet in the narthex.

We are currently accepting registrations for Sunday school. If you have filled out a registration form in the past you are only required to update if needed. If you are a parent of a 3 year-old we need you to register your child so we can have a accurate headcount for this fall. In September we will be studying the book of Samuel with the lessons about Kindness, Forgiveness and that we can rely on God.

Flat Pastor is back for our Act of Kindness misson!

Last year we had a great response to flat Pastor and we want to see where he is going to go this year! If you have an act of kindness to share please let Becky Tesch know clchrsundayschool@gmail.com or fill out a form at church and we will be doing our wall of kindness again this year!

Sunday Sundae anyone? September 15th we will have our first Sunday Sundae! Come out to the patio after Sunday School and enjoy some yummy ice cream with all the fixins!

When asked about creative ideas for Labor Day, all I had come up with was a blank stare. For my family, a cookout was a must, but other than that, nothing. We didn’t go to a parade (I’m fairly certain they had one in Toledo every year). We never told stories about the difficulties with workers’ rights. If it weren’t for Wikipedia I wouldn’t even know when Labor Day was first celebrated. I had never done anything creative or even necessarily special before on that day. What I did know was that Labor Day meant football was at hand. I also learned that apparently it was funny that people made a fashion faux pas by wearing white before Labor Day. And I knew that around that time I could easily rely on commercial after commercial telling me about the biggest sale of the year coming up that weekend. Commercialism, as it were, had overcome that holiday much as it had the Christmas season. Maybe that’s why I wanted to offer something to think about over Labor Day and its weekend this year. By the time you actually read this, Labor Day will likely be passed and forgotten about. However what I am thinking and proposing ought not to be restricted to a single day once a year. If Labor Day is a day that we set aside for recognizing workers and their contribution to society, then it seems that it is not a far cry to want to just say thank you to certain people. The day seems especially aimed at those who work in a very private manner, that is, their work is done behind the scenes. With that in mind, may I just take a moment to say thank you for all the ways in which you labor in the Lord. Whether it be volunteer time you spend at this church, work you spend at being a parent or supporting your parents, work that you have made a career out of, or anything else you do that impacts others, thank you. Many people believe that what they do is somehow out of step with what we might call “God’s Plan” but I hope that you realize the way that just by being who you are, you make a contribution to this creation where we all seek significance for our lives. This place would not be the same without you, and this world would not either. Thank you, Pastor DJ

Excel in the Grace of Giving! This year we will moving our annual stewardship drive back to the fall and will again follow the fiscal year of January through December. Our theme this year will be: “Excel in the Grace of Giving!” based upon the scripture of 2 Corinthians 8:7. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “But just as you excel in everything... in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us... see that you also excel in this grace of giving” As Paul urged the people in Corinth to give, we too are urged to “excel in this grace of giving!” What a great message! What a positive statement! What an inspirational challenge!

Giving is our faith response to God’s gifts. God wants us to give willingly and cheerfully out of hearts filled with love and gratitude for our present and eternal lives. We also give out of obedience because God’s Word directs us to give. As your pastors, we hope and pray that the messages offered in this year’s stewardship drive will help us in our journeys as faithful and generous stewards. By the power of the Holy Spirit through Word and Sacrament, we are molded and transformed into stewards who follow God’s ways and become more Christ-like in our giving. As Christians, we are motivated to give by the gift of God’s grace through his son so that with hearts filled with God’s love and grace, we can give faithfully.

We will kick off our stewardship drive on the weekend of October 12 & 13, followed by three weeks of program messages concluding with Consecration Sunday on 11/17. We hope you make every effort to be present throughout the program. May God generously bless and keep us in His peace and joy as we give to Him!

Pastor Tom Shelly Pastor D.J. Dent

A Note from the Church Council Don’t have time to volunteer? Don’t have the wiggle room to increase your offering? Here’s another way to give $$$ to CLC without spending more than you normally would! The CLC Scrip ministry is a great way to give money to CLC and it doesn’t cost you anything. For each gift card purchased, CLC receives a percentage of the value and some of the percentages are huge! For example, Old Navy and Gap give CLC 14% of the value so when you spend $100, CLC gets $14!!

The number of participating retail stores is enormous –

restaurants, groceries, entertainment, clothes, auto/travel, home improvement and on-line stores! It’s easy to do and only requires a little planning before shopping. Pick up an order form in the Narthex (or check the GL Scrip website: www.glscrip.com for a complete list of available gift cards). After returning your order form, you can pick up your gift cards the following week!

We Still Need Sunday School Teachers, especially for Kindergarten, 1st and 3rd grade. No experience or preparation required! In fact, you don’t have to teach every week. Teachers simply follow the weekly lesson plan – all supplies and plans are provided. Please contact Becky Tesch for more information at clchrsundayschool@gmail.com.
