Symbols that Serve Us
Memory Tree. This year Christ Lutheran Church is adding a new symbol to assist members in their Advent journey toward Christmas. The season is not only designed to celebrate God’s gift in Christ, but to aid us in our own journey of HOPE for the future, celebration of the present, and to recall memories of the past with loved ones. Such memories are stirred and in reverie…reflected upon. To that end a second, smaller, Christmas tree will be placed to the right of the altar/table area for members to hang a Christmas ornament in memory of someone dear to your heart. Like All Saints Sunday it is a reminder that they are always with us
at the Table of our Lord as we gather for worship. Please feel free to bring an ornament and hang it on the tree. Advent Wreath. The Advent Wreath is of very recent origin. Originally, it just contained four purple candles but since the 1960’s the color was changed to BLUE, the Scandinavian color for hope. They help us mark the four weeks of preparation that lead us into The Christ- mass, the worship of Christ for Christmas. Some churches have a Christ Candle in the middle that really should be reserved for Easter as the Paschal Candle.

Pastor Allert’s Message Fellow beloved family, friends and saints of Christ Lutheran Church, We have officially entered into one of my favorite times of the year — Advent and Christmas! Despite all the work and prep, I do love seeing all of the fond decorations. I love hearing again the familiar carols – though I tend to start looking for them far closer to Christmas than others do by Thanksgiving. I love both giving gifts and receiving them! And I love the general spirit of “good cheer” that is in the air. Plus, this year, I get a bit giddy at the idea of snow at Christmastime (though I may regret putting that in writing later). But what moves me the most is the birth of hope that stands at the heart of the season. In the birth of a little child, hope was rekindled that there is something more available to each of us. With the birth of Jesus the spark of faith took hold that there can be more to life. This gift of hope continues to be offered to all of us. It is ours to unwrap and see what possibilities await us. The force of this usually hits me when the final Christmas Eve service has finished and the last candle has been blown out. Even while driving along the empty streets on the way home, beneath the stars above in a dark mid-night, is always a “Silent night, holy night. All is calm, all is bright.” Christmas brings me joy and fills me with hope because truly Christ the Savior is born. No matter what is happening around you, may the hope of Christ be within you as we celebrate that light of peace and love that is offered to all. Pastor Eric J. Allert
Rocky Mountain Synod and ELCA News Update Did you know that the offering received from this year’s Thanksgiving worship service was given glocally (globally & locally)? We divided the offering evenly between the Fresh Harvest food bank in Lone Tree, the ELCA World Hunger ministry, and our own congregation’s outreach budget efforts. With this blessing, we seek to care for the neighbor in need in our community, and the communities around the world. From February through August, congregations and individuals in the Rocky Mountain Synod gave $273,178 to ELCA World Hunger. We still rank seventh among the 65 ELCA synods! If you would like to further contribute to the ELCA World Hunger Campaign, you can do so directly alongside your regular giving here at CLC. Simply indicate the amount you’d like to send along with “ELCA World Hunger” on the memo line of your check. Or, you can certainly call the office to make an appointment with Anne to see this cared for in person.

News from the preschool
Hello from the Preschool and blessings to everyone on this holiday season! The preschool is gearing up for our holiday celebration, learning about the birth of Jesus and performing in our Christmas programs. We so enjoy watching our little ones sing for everyone.
On another note, December begins Fall registration for 2017! Time goes fast downstairs. We will have registration paperwork for church members, MOPS, existing preschool families and alumni available on December 16th for everyone to take home and complete over the holiday. These forms will need to be returned to the preschool no later than January 6th to guarantee your 1st class choice for the fall. A $60.00 registration fee will also be required when you turn in your forms. The forms will be on the church resource table in the Narthex. Please take one and tell your friends to call and schedule a tour with us to see our wonderful program. Open Registration to the public will begin on Monday, January 9th. We have multiple class options to choose from, as well as, before and after kids klub daily. If you have any questions, please call Deb or Blair at 303-471-9290 or email Deb at dmorgans@clchr.org. We thank you in advance for your support and know your child will have an amazing and loving time learning about Jesus and having fun in our school. Isaiah 9:6: For a child will be born unto us, a Son will be given to us: And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty god, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. As we celebrate the wonderful gift of the birth of our Savior, blessings for a safe and happy holiday. Ms. Deb and Ms. Blair
Pastor DJ’s Message Christmas v. Easter No, I’m not proposing a battle royale between the two highest festival days of the church year, but I did take a moment this year to think about the difference between the two. Yes, obviously there are two very different narratives: one at the very beginning of Jesus’ earthly life and the other at the end. But in my musings I started to think about the larger significance of what those two stories hold. Despite Christmas coming up first in the church calendar (recalling of course that it begins in Advent), I’d like first to address Easter. To me, Easter is the more spiritual of the two. By that I don’t mean more holy, even if you could possibly make that case, but that it deals more with divinity. It declares the ultimate power over all things of the world by God’s divine power once death itself is vanquished. When contemplating the dual nature (human and divine) of Christ, the divine seems amplified at Easter – even the storytelling around this time deals with the miraculous and supernatural portions of Jesus’ ministry. Christmas then, by contrast, deals with the more human aspects of Jesus. It takes that which is spiritual, eternal, invisible about God and makes it flesh, blood, and baby. It doesn’t necessarily affirm God’s power and authority over anything other than that God so desires the restoration of humanity that God is willing to set aside the power that makes God God for the sake of the brokenness of creation. In this, we tell the tale of Jesus’ humanity most profoundly that the God who spoke creation into existence now has to learn how to speak. I think this critical for the message that we proclaim that God has such compassion for the world that rejects God, that God takes on the lowliest form to communicate love. As the darkness creeps earlier and earlier into the day, we are reminded that God set aside light to become darkness, God took on flesh to be reunited in love with that which once loved him back. God became us for us. As story after story of the weakness of humanity piles up, we are reminded at Christmas that God, too, bears the burdens of creation; declaring that we are never alone, that we are loved, and that God will stop at nothing to reconcile the world. Welcome to the world, baby Jesus. We’ve missed you and celebrate you once again. Merry Christmas, Pastor DJ

Please join us for the holiday season!
Worship Teams for Christmas We are starting to schedule Worship Teams for Christmas Eve services 1:00,3:00, 5:00, 7:00 and 9:00 pm and the Christmas Day service at 10:00 am. If you would like to help usher or serve communion, please watch for the sign-up sheets during services and pick the service you want or sign the response sheet.
Christmas Worship Team Training There will be a short training on Sunday, December 18th at 9:00am in the Youth Room for the Christmas Eve worship teams. Please join us to go over some of the different things we will be doing for Christmas.
Poinsettias If you would like to purchase a poinsettia for the altar on Christmas Eve, in honor or memory of a very special person, please sign the response sheet and put a check in the offering plate for $16.00. We are putting together a list for the Christmas bulletin, so the sooner we get your information, the better. We also need people to help place the Poinsettias around the altar on Friday, December 23rd at 9:00am, and/or to water the flowers once a week for approximately three (3) weeks. If you are interested in helping with either of these, please sign the response sheet. The poinsettias need to be watered twice a week from December 23rd to January 10th. If you are interested in helping with this, please sign the Response Sheet.
Set-up Team for Christmas Eve We are in need of a team to help us set up chairs in the Narthex and Fellowship Hall for Christmas Eve on Friday, December 23rd at 9:00 am. We will also be setting out the poinsettias that day. If you can help us, please sign the response sheet or email Debbie at dfreeman@clchr.org.
Shuttle Bus for Christmas Eve We will be using our own bus to shuttle people from the AMC parking lot across from the Outback restaurant on Christmas Eve. The shuttle will start at 2:30 pm and go until 8:30 pm. Please remember to come a little early so you can take advantage of riding the bus. On a day when there are around 1600 people worshipping at CLC, we would like to encourage all members and regularly attending guests to ride the bus. Many people who only attend church once or twice a year will be here, so let’s show them God’s love by letting them have a parking space.
Nursery We will need volunteers to help in the nursery for the 1:00,3:00, 5:00, 7:00, and 9:00 Christmas Eve services. We really need your help, so please sign the response sheet, if you can help.
Christmas Eve Clean-Up Clean-up for Christmas Eve will be Monday, December 26th at 10:00am.
Christmas Clean-Up Clean-up for the Christmas holidays will be on Tuesday, January 10th at 10:00am.
Pastor DJ and Linda Holcombe are Published Authors! Pastor DJ Dent and Linda Holcombe, Director of Music, were invited by CSS Publishing in Ohio to co-author a worship leader’s workbook and resource for Pastors, musicians, and worship planners. Their book contains an entire year’s worth of creative traditional and contemporary worship and music ideas for every Sunday and special worship service (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Lent, etc), and many of these plans were originally created for and tried in our own worship services here at CLC. Their book, Lectionary Worship Workbook Series V, Cycle A, has now been published, and is for sale nationwide on the CSS Publishing website, store.csspub.com. Pastor DJ and Linda have been invited to write two more worship leader’s workbooks for CSS Publishing. Congratulations!

A Word of Grace
for Peace, Wonder, and Growth in Discipleship In a sermon I delivered on Christ the King Sunday, I shared an old story about a nobleman and his village in Europe several centuries ago. This nobleman truly cared for his people, but as he got older and older, he wondered what legacy he could leave to his townspeople after he was gone; how could he truly ensure that they would continue to be blessed. Eventually, he decided that he would build a church, but the completed plans for the church were kept secret. Once it was completed, the people gathered and they marveled together at the church’s beauty inside and out. But, after following many comments of praise, one of the villagers looked around the inside of the sanctuary and asked with great concern, "But where are the lamps? How will the church be lit?" Without saying a word, the nobleman pointed to some brackets that were attached to the walls; and he then quietly gave to each family a lamp that was to be carried to the worship service where it would then hang over their heads. "Each time you are here,” the nobleman explained, “the area where you are seated will be lit. Each time you are not here, that area will be dark. Whenever you do not come to church, some part of God’s house will be dark." As disciples… actually, it’s far more personal than our call from Christ to be disciples. As a community of faith and family together, it rests upon each of us to care for those that God has at one time or another led into our midst for shared mission, ministry and relationship-building. I am certain that each of us know of someone who has – for some reason or another - not brought their lantern to worship at CLC for quite some time… someone who has not yet been able receive that renewed warmth… someone that we genuinely miss. As we enter into December, continuing again in the hope-filled season of Advent and the peace of Christmas together, God and I both place this challenge upon all of our hearts: remember the joy of past fellowships, recall the care given and received in healthy relationships, and renew those invitations you can personally make to welcome the brother and sister in Christ.

REFORMATION, RENEWAL & RELATIONSHIP On October 31st, our presiding bishop Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton gathered with fellow Lutheran and Catholic leaders for a joint ecumenical commemoration of the Reformation in Lund, Sweden. United in faith, for the glory of God, a historic worship and common prayer service was led by Pope Francis, Munib Younan (bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land and The Lutheran World Federation president), and Martin Junge (LWF general secretary). In his opening welcome, Bishop Younan said, “With joy we have come to recognize that what unites us is far greater than what divides us.” Pope Francis told worshipers that “in the context of the commemoration of the Reformation of 1517, we have a new opportunity to accept a common path, one that has taken shape over the past 50 years in the ecumenical dialogue between The Lutheran World Federation and the Catholic Church.” In his sermon, Junge emphasized that both Lutherans and Catholics have “much more that unites us than that which separates us. We are branches of the same vine. We are one in Baptism. This is why we are here at this joint commemoration: to rediscover who we are in Christ.” During the service, Pope Francis and Bishop Younan signed a joint statement committing Catholics and Lutherans to deepening their communion and common witness for justice. Thousands later gathered at Malmo Arena celebrating the theme “Together in Hope.” Maria Immonen (LWF World Service director), and Michel Roy (Caritas Internationalis secretary general), signed a declaration of intent mutually committing the global Christian organizations to deepened relationships and closer cooperation in humanitarian response and sustainable development.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT ADULT STUDY CONTINUES THROUGH ADVENT Pastor Eric is continuing his weekly adult study series entitled “Unpacking Creation.” Together, we are looking at the Genesis narratives; seeing again the Good-ness of God’s work, what it means to be created to create, the impact of the fall, and quite a bit more. Classes are at 7pm in the Sonrise Room and (as always) we hope to see you there.

CLC Annual Mortgage Debt Reduction Fundraiser
Christ Lutheran Church’s Legacy and Endowment Committee will be conducting our annual fundraiser to reduce our $1.9 Million Dollar mortgage debt beginning Saturday, December 3rd and running through December 31st. Our goal for this campaign is $2,000.00. We have a special incentive for this year’s campaign: for every $20.00 donated towards the campaign, the donor will receive 1 chance to win a bronze leaf on the Tree of Life display in the Narthex that they can dedicate personally. So, as an example, a $100.00 contribution would get you five chances in the drawing for the bronze leaf.
DECORATING AT URBAN PEAK
Members of the L &E Committee will be taking donations and distributing drawing tickets in the Narthex after each Saturday and Sunday service beginning on December 3rd and ending on Saturday, December 31st (exception is Christmas Eve, December 24 and Christmas Day, December 25). IF we achieve our $2000.00 goal, the drawing for the bronze leaf will be held Sunday, January 8 at the 9:30 a.m. service.
Thanks to those you donated Christmas décor for the Urban Peak youth shelter. And another big thanks to Kathy & Kaelan Boyer, Mark & Lexi Bauer, Carl Douhan, Kerry Harris, Kathy Risden and Mark, Dianne & Jacob Yoss who went to the shelter on Nov. 27 and decorated the shelter which definitely changed the atmosphere. In addition to sending our sincere thanks, we all ask that you continue to pray for the youth at Urban Peak as the holidays can be especially challenging. Peace!
Remember, all donations to the campaign are tax deductible for your 2016 tax year. Pay by check to maintain a record or we can provide you with a receipt for cash donations. Please contact Legacy and Endowment Committee members, Jeff Bergstrom, Ty Boggs, Debbie Freeman, Dick Herdahl, Barry Reeves or Steve Strom if any questions.
