Shuttle Bus for Christmas Eve Please plan to arrive early and ride the CLC bus from the east parking lot of STEM School Highlands Ranch on Ridgeline Blvd to the church on Christmas Eve. The shuttle will start at 2:00 pm and run until 7:15 pm. On a day when there are about 1600 people worshipping at CLC, we would encourage all members to ride the bus. Many people who only attend church once or twice a year will be here, so let’s show them God’s love by letting them have a parking space.

Midweek Advent Worship This year during Advent, we are offering Wednesday Midweek Advent Worship for the first time in over a decade! The Wednesday Healing Worship Services will begin at 7pm, and will feature the beautiful Holden Evening Prayer music, communion, and healing stations where you can pray with a Pastor. In this busy time of year and during such a chaotic time in our world, come and enjoy some quiet moments. Wed, December 6th: Healing of Self Wed, December 13th: Healing of Community & Nation Wed, December 20th: Healing of World/Creation/Cosmos Chili Supper and Christmas Caroling

A Message from Pastor Eric Affirming Each Other this Month in Our Faith and Peace Together Several of us still observe the holiday tradition of opening our hearts daily to Advent devotions. I have long cherished such a booklet that was created by Christian worship “guru” and composer Henri Nouwen. In this particular devotional entitled “Living in Hope”, Henri focused in on Romans 12:12 which again calls us to rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, and persevere in prayer. He goes on to further reflect an appropriate message for all of us as disciples in Christ: “Christian community is the place where we keep the flame of hope alive among us and take it seriously so that it can grow and become stronger in us. In this way we can live with courage, trusting that there is a spiritual power in us when we are together that allows us to live in this world without surrendering to the powerful forces constantly seducing us toward despair. That is how we dare to say that God is a God of love when we see hatred all around us. That is why we can claim that God is a God of life even when we see death and destruction and agony all around us. We say it together. We affirm it in each other. Waiting together, nurturing what has already begun, expecting its fulfillment – that is the meaning of marriage, friendship, community, and the Christian life.” During these past weeks and months, we have again had to witness tragic heartache in great darkness of communities both near and far. The church, this church, will continue to proclaim the hopeful truth that most certainly the light does truly shine in the darkness. That light shines even brighter when we carry it with us into our own lives and throughout the world in which we venture. We must continue to (as Henri encourages) nurture our light so that it remains constant from the beginning in which we were first comforted by the warmth of the faith-giving light. And so, may this Advent season be a time in which your peace in Christ is truly affirmed, and the hope we all cherish is once again shared with brilliant radiance and marvelous faith. In that blessed affirmation, we are reminded again of the true joy of Christmas, the gift of Jesus. I look forward to experiencing the sharing of that communal affirmation, the holiness of worship, the peace of Christian fellowship, and the gift we all receive together – the gift of Christ in our hearts for the whole world. O God, thank You for the friends and Christian family who help to keep us all faithfully focused on You and Your Gospel. Amen.

Introducing Stephen Ministry to Christ Lutheran Church People often ask, “What exactly is a Stephen Minister?” One way to put it is that Stephen Ministers are the After People. Stephen Ministers are there after the phone call you hoped you’d never get. They are there after the funeral, when everyone has left and emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you. Stephen Ministers are there after the relationship falls apart and the bottom falls out of your life. They are there after the doctor’s last visit, after the nursing home director welcomes you to your new home, after the last child leaves the nest, after the handcuffs are clicked into place on a loved one being led away, after the baby arrives, after the pink slip lands, after the family and friends have heard your story one too many times but you still need to talk it out. Stephen Ministers are the After People. They are ready to come alongside you – or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives – and provide comfort and support for as long after as needed. In 2018, the Council and I are excited to introduce the Stephen Ministry Program to Christ Lutheran Church as a new development in the life of the congregation and our vision with God for the future of the church! Since 1975, more than 600,000 Christian men and women from all walks

of life have trained as Stephen Ministers. Most became a Stephen Minister as a way to help others who were hurting – but they quickly discovered that God blesses them in amazing ways in return. We are very eager for what God’s Spirit is bringing to us (and through us) now in this powerful new ministry opportunity! If you would like to learn more about Stephen Ministry, including discernment about your possible call to become trained and serve as a Stephen Minister here at Christ Lutheran Church, please contact Pastor Eric directly in the church office. If you would like to know more about the ministry itself, how it might be especially helpful for you, or how you could help support Stephen Ministers including a financial gift to help seed the start-up costs for the training and on-going support necessary, please also speak with Pastor Eric. Intensive training events have now been scheduled throughout the country for 2018, and leadership is reviewing our options this month for the best opportunity to move forward. Let us know right away of how this after ministry can grow in your life soon!

CALL COMMITTEE UPDATE

November was truly an exciting month in the life of our Call Committee! We reconvened on the 13th after being provided a second slate of candidates by the Synod. This second slate consisted of three potential candidates, and after reviewing all three at length, the Committee proceeded to arrange interviews with two of the candidates and release one from further consideration. Please continue to keep Pastor Eric, our Call Committee, the Church Council and our staff in your supportive prayers. Your efforts to demonstrate your love for the leadership moving ahead have been a wonderful blessing. We thank you for the additional patience that you have given, and the recognition of the importance for the process. Additional updates will be made through the appropriate release methods when ready.

Say No to Holiday Stress By Jenny Allert The Christmas season often brings a flurry of activity, some more enjoyable than others. Overall, it can be a very fun time, but so often it can also bring about stress. Stress and depression increase significantly during the Christmas season. And it's no wonder. The holidays present a dizzying array of demands — parties, shopping, baking, cleaning and entertaining, to name just a few. Not to mention family, which can be a blessing or at times present a unique array of difficulty.

Try these alternatives: o Donate to a charity in someone's name. o Give homemade gifts. o Start a family gift exchange.

You can minimize the stress that accompanies the holidays, and even end up enjoying the holidays more than you thought you would. Instead of creating my own list, I thought it was best to share this excellent list provided by Mayo Clinic. May the Christmas Season bring you relaxation and blessings!

6. Plan ahead. Set aside specific days for shopping, baking, visiting friends and other activities. Plan your menus and then make your shopping list. That'll help prevent last-minute scrambling to buy forgotten ingredients. And make sure to line up help for party prep and cleanup.

Mayo Clinic has provided a list of tips to help decrease stress during the Holiday!

7. Learn to say no. Saying yes when you should say no can leave you feeling resentful and overwhelmed. Friends and colleagues will understand if you can't participate in every project or activity. If it's not possible to say no when your boss asks you to work overtime, try to remove something else from your agenda to make up for the lost time.

When stress is at its peak, it's hard to stop and regroup. Try to prevent stress and depression in the first place, especially if the holidays have taken an emotional toll on you in the past. 1. Acknowledge your feelings. If someone close to you has recently died or you can't be with loved ones, realize that it's normal to feel sadness and grief. It's OK to take time to cry or express your feelings. You can't force yourself to be happy just because it's the holiday season. 2. Reach out. If you feel lonely or isolated, seek out community, religious or other social events. They can offer support and companionship. Volunteering your time to help others also is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships. 3. Be realistic. The holidays don't have to be perfect or just like last year. As families change and grow, traditions and rituals often change as well. Choose a few to hold on to, and be open to creating new ones. For example, if your adult children can't come to your house, find new ways to celebrate together, such as sharing pictures, emails or videos. 4. Set aside differences. Try to accept family members and friends as they are, even if they don't live up to all of your expectations. Set aside grievances until a more appropriate time for discussion. And be understanding if others get upset or distressed when something goes awry. Chances are they're feeling the effects of holiday stress and depression, too. 5. Stick to a budget. Before you go gift and food shopping, decide how much money you can afford to spend. Then stick to your budget. Don't try to buy happiness with an avalanche of gifts.

8. Don't abandon healthy habits. Don't let the holidays become a free-for-all. Overindulgence only adds to your stress and guilt. Try these suggestions: o Have a healthy snack before holiday parties so that you don't go overboard on sweets, cheese or drinks. o Get plenty of sleep. o Incorporate regular physical activity into each day. 9. Take a breather. Make some time for yourself. Spending just 15 minutes alone, without distractions, may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do. Find something that reduces stress by clearing your mind, slowing your breathing and restoring inner calm. Some options may include: o Taking a walk at night and stargazing. o Listening to soothing music. o Getting a massage. o Reading a book. 10. Seek professional help if you need it. Despite your best efforts, you may find yourself feeling persistently sad or anxious, plagued by physical complaints, unable to sleep, irritable and hopeless, and unable to face routine chores. If these feelings last for a while, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional.

Hello from the Preschool and blessings to everyone this holiday season!

The preschool is gearing up for our holiday celebration, learning about the birth of Jesus and performing in our Christmas programs. We so enjoy watching our little ones sing for everyone.

On another note, December begins Fall registration for 2018! Time goes fast downstairs. We will have registration paperwork for church members, MOPS, existing preschool families and alumni available on December 18th. These forms will need to be returned to the preschool no later than January 10th to guarantee your 1st class choice for the fall. A $60.00 registration fee will also be required when you turn in your forms. The forms will be on the church resource table in the Narthex. Open Registration to the public will begin on Monday, January 15th. Tell your friends to call and schedule a tour with us to see our wonderful program. We have multiple class options to choose from, as well as, before and after kids

klub daily. If you have questions, please call Deb or Blair at 303-471-9290 or email Deb at dmorgans@clchr.org. We thank you in advance for your support and know your child will have an amazing and loving time learning about Jesus and having fun in our school. Isaiah 9:6: For a child will be born unto us, a Son will be given to us: And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty god, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. As we celebrate the wonderful gift of the birth of our Savior, blessings for a safe and happy holiday. Ms. Deb and Ms. Blair

SUCCESS! I am pleased to announce that some of our fellow congregation members have stepped forward to serve a couple of ministries that were really needing help. The Maintenance Team has added several new members since September, and just this past week, three new members joined Altar Guild. Thank you to those new volunteers. We appreciate anyone who steps forward to make our church a better place. On that note, there is still a great need for additional members for Worship Teams at all services, as well as assisting ministers and scripture readers. You have my word that you will be well-trained before you are asked to help, and that members of the staff will always be available to support you. One very active volunteer here at CLC said she used to bring her young children to the building when she volunteered to clean the kitchen. She brought some crayons and coloring books, and the kids happily entertained themselves while she made the kitchen sparkling clean. We welcome people of all ages to help with this ministry, and we are going to be in serious need of some help early this spring when some of the “regulars” are not available.

SOFIA: Stories of Faith in Action

Thank you, thank you to the wonderful members who helped collect food for our wildly successful food drive on October 28. Thanks, too, to all the church members who also brought food in to the sanctuary that weekend. Everyone’s generosity with both time and donations is greatly appreciated. Finally, we recognize that it took an army of volunteers to pull off that terrific Lutherfest celebration. THANK YOU to all who were involved. The Lutherfest planning committee put together a great event, but it was the people who showed up and pitched in, as well as all who attended, that truly made it a spectacular event. Thanks for everything!

Give a Christmas Gift

to Your Ugandan Sponsored Child If you are sponsoring a child through Outreach Uganda, you can send your child a Christmas card and/or gift. Monetary gifts are preferred due to the high cost of shipping. We suggest a gift of $30 for a child’s gift, $50 if you want to do both a gift and contribution for a Christmas meal, or any amount up to $300 for family gifts. All gifts are needed by December 11th at the latest so we can get them to Uganda by Christmas. You can mail the gifts to Outreach Uganda, or drop them off at the bead selling table on Sundays or at Carol’s house. All donations are tax deductible. Call Carol at 303/683-8450 if you need directions or mailing address or need more information.

IN THANKSGIVING OF OUR STAFF

more than the required hours for which they are paid. More importantly, they frequently do it with love and enthusiasm for the ministry of the gospel!

As we near some of the busiest times of the church calendar year, it is especially important to me that we take time to express our appreciation and genuine love for the staff here at Christ Lutheran. God has blessed each of them with tremendous ability and remarkable gifts for service. Each and every one of them are a treasure in how God continues to work through them for the sake of the church and the community around us.

Once again, your church leadership wants to offer to you an opportunity to show appreciation for our hard working staff. This gift is determined upon the generosity of the congregational members and friends. If you are able, please consider giving an additional offering over the next few weeks to help with this gift to our staff. If interested, you may mark your checks or envelopes with the words “Staff Appreciation Gift”. You may place your donation in the weekly offering, or mail it to the office attention “Jeff Bergstrom, Treasurer” or give them to one of the council members at church.

As Advent is now here and Christmas is fast approaching on the horizon, so too comes a focus on the joyous impact that generosity brings to those close to our hearts. As many of you know, our staff members consistently go above and beyond what is required of them for their jobs. Often they work many

As always, your generosity is greatly appreciated, and so is the love and support that you offer our staff throughout the year. May you be blessed with the many joys of the season as we again celebrate the birth of Jesus and the love he inspires.
