Child of Promise + Promise Fulfilled! For the four weeks of Advent preceding Christmas we have had the theme of the “Child of Promise” where we have heard about four different names of the promised child of Jesus by Isaiah’s Old Testament prophecy. Immanuel – God with us, Bar Shalom – Prince of Peace, Aarioch Nezer – Royal Branch and Yeshuah – Salvation. The highlight of our month of December comes with the celebration of the birth of Jesus – the Promise Fulfilled! Of all the ways God could have come to earth, he chose to come to us as a baby; a human child; a helpless child; Immanuel – God with us! The celebration of Christmas Eve, the birth of this child is simple, rich and mature in its meaning to us and the whole world! From the joy of childlike excitement and faith, to the depths of the life and teaching of this born child to grow into a man willing to give his life for others. From a wooden manger to a wooden cross, the Word made flesh wants to make us children of the Heavenly Father-Creator God! As the year of our Lord 2013 winds down, while winding up to Christmas and the change of the year of 2014 of our Lord in the celebration of New Year, may we again or for the first time celebrate the profound nature of following and believing in a Child; the Godly Child and the child of God! Come celebrate on Christmas Eve, the Promise Fulfilled + Jesus the Christ the babe of Mary! + Many Blessings + See You in Worship + Pastor Tom

Flowers for the Altar

We will be sending around the 2014 flower chart during service in the next couple of weeks. If you have a special occasion or someone you would like to honor, please sign up for a specific date on the chart. The flowers are $25.00 and we will place a bouquet on the Altar for every request we get for that date. Please feel free to take the flowers home with you after the 11:00 service on the weekend you choose, but please be sure to return the vase to the kitchen here at the church.

DYNAMITE

For the December meeting we will be Christmas caroling. December 15th we will start off with a chilli supper and then followed up with caroling at a nursing home and church members homes. We will start to eat by 5:00 pm and finish caroling around 8:00/8:30ish pm. Everyone in the family is invited to come eat and sing. Mr. Gary will drive the shuttle bus around and others can follow in a carpool. Bring warm clothes to wear. Watch the weather to make sure you will stay warm enough.

Food Drive for Interfaith Community Services We will be collecting food for Interfaith starting January 1st and ending on Souper Bowl Sunday, February 9th. Please bring your food in and place it in the blue bins in between the two entrance doors.

Pastor DJ’s Message One of my favorite Christmas stories I love to tell is the “Tale of Two Families.” In every family there are well established traditions, and I think that it is hard to get family traditions further apart than the Dents and the Quackenbushes (my wife’s maiden name). Christmas morning at the Dent household growing up was a rigorous thing. The five children were up long before the parents, and we offered them a brief rest before declaring that Christmas had come and Santa left plenty of presents to go around. Once Mom and Dad had their cups of coffee, the race was on. In a flurry of wrapping paper everyone tore into their gifts. Every now and then a rolled up ball of wrapping paper would go whizzing across someone’s face creating a distraction just long enough to roll up a paper ball of your own to wing it at someone else. It is a mad sprint to reach the end of the presents, and when all is said and done, you catch your breath and look around to see the damage. Paper is usually everywhere and people are tinkering with one of the many things they opened. It is a joyous, festive, and very vibrant time. Christmas morning in the Quackenbush household was quite different. I found this out the first year I was invited to attend. First off, there were chairs! All arranged in a circle. Everything was in neat order, and we sat in our chairs and each took turns telling stories from the year that got written down in a journal. Then when it was time for presents, someone played Santa and passed out one present to the youngest person. Everyone watched her open one present, and once she was finished it moved to the next child. One by one all of the presents under the tree were opened. I share these stories side by side because I think they teach that Christmas deserves both perspectives. It should be a time of unbridled joy and expectation and yet have a sincere reverence about it. We accept with great wonder the gift of Jesus Christ, God made flesh. And in that amazement we are left to stand with mouth agape as we try and ponder what on earth this all means. God’s blessings to you as you celebrate the mystery and magnificence of this Christmas. God’s Grace and Peace, Pastor DJ

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SCARF SALE Thanks to everyone who purchased a scarf, hat, baby blanket, washcloth or shawl from the Chicks with Sticks Annual Scarf Sale! We made a whopping $1110! We are already making plans to make items for next year! The remaining items will be traveling to Uganda, Tanzania, Peru or distributed locally by Women4WomenKnitting4Peace in their new program, Community Knits. Thanks to everyone who donated yarn, knitted items, crocheted items, sold items, helped set up or take down, and to all the fellow yarn workers who attend our meetings! We meet the first Saturday of every month from 9-11 in the Sonrise Room and All Are Welcome! We have hooks, needles, yarn and plenty of teachers if you would like to join our group. All we ask is that you use the yarn we have to make items for our church!

Who Are the OWLS? Who are OWLs? The OWLs (Older, Wiser Lutherans) are a group of seniors at CLC who meet every second Friday of the month at noon for a potluck luncheon followed by a program in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Our gatherings are mostly social but we also support and encourage each other in sad and difficult times. We have an annual fundraiser collecting monies to purchase animals, i.e. goats, rabbits, ducks, etc. that are given to needy families in other countries through the ELCA Barnyard Fund. Also, upon baptism, each infant or child receives a cuddly toy lamb from the OWLs. If you are interested in visiting or joining this group, please call Ingrid Hirst at 303-791-4394.

Everybody is welcome!

CALLING ALL WOMEN

Come join the Beth Moore:

Here and Now... There and Then Bible Study

Have you ever wanted to take a bible study class? Have you taken a break from bible study and want to get back into the scriptures? Do you want to learn more about all these stories within the bible? Are you looking to enhance your faith journey? Here's your chance to join other women for Beth Moore's bible study, Here and Now... There and Then: A Lecture Series on Revelation. On our first meeting we'll get our workbooks for the study and watch the opening lesson on DVD. You will then complete some homework (yes, homework!!) and at each session we'll spend some time discussing the homework and then watching the next lesson on DVD. We will meet on Mondays from 9:30am to 11:30am in the Sonrise room, starting January 27, 2014. This is an 11 session, video-driven bible study. The cost is $25. Childcare will be available. Please sign up no later than January 13, 2014. If you would like more information, or have specific questions, please feel free to contact Chris Schaeberle at 303794-3673 or schaeberle1@comcast.net. Here is a bit more information about Breaking Free and Beth Moore from www.lifeway.com: Here and Now... There and Then by Beth Moore is a lecture series on the book of Revelation. Beth presents many points of view, allowing women to decide for themselves when the interpretation varies among scholars. She teaches that God is as specific about what He does reveal as He is about what He does not reveal. Each of the 11 sessions is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. The set includes 11 DVDs and one listening guide with light homework. Known for presenting Scripture in living color, Christian speaker and Bible study author Beth Moore enjoys getting to serve women of every age and denomination, and she is passionate about women knowing and loving the Word of God. Beth's broad collection of LifeWay women Bible studies covers relevant topics from believing God to be Who He says He is to loving difficult people. Each in-depth study guides you on your faith journey. Beth and husband Keith praise God for over 30 years of marriage. They enjoy traveling, hiking, drinking coffee on the back porch, eating Mexican food, making each other laugh, walking their dogs, and being grandparents.

ELCA World Hunger

Stewardship and Thanksgiving

Hunger is a year-round problem for many across the globe. You can do your part to alleviate world hunger by signing up to donate $10.00 per month during 2013 through the ELCA World Hunger Campaign. All you have to do is drop a check into the offering plate made out to CLC with “ELCA World Hunger written in the memo portion. If you prefer, you may pay a lump sum rather than every month. Our goal is to get 20 families to sign up and participate in this ministry. Please see Debby if you are interested or sign the response sheet.

In this season of thanksgiving, a sincere 'thank you' is in order to everyone who supports our congregation throughout the year with their attendance, service and regular financial contributions. For those of you who are interested, the church offers electronic giving options for making donations on a scheduled, automated basis. It's convenient for you and provides much-needed financial consistency for the church. Pick up an authorization form.

On a day when there are around 1600 people worshipping at CLC, we would like to encourage all members and regularly attending guests to ride the bus. Sunday School

T ha nk YOU!

Sunday school has been amazing so far! A huge thank you to everyone who has either helped coordinate, taught, helped or been on the prep team! Without all of you none of this would be possible. Creative Christmas is up and going! Please bring in any creative items such as craft items, Legos, puzzles etc. as we send these to a church called Pueblo De Dios in Compton California. This is our third annual creative Christmas drive and it is amazing how many Children we can help.

We are also doing a family board game drive for project sanctuary, a nonprofit which helps reunite military families after a long deployment. These can be new or gently used to board games, cards, essentially any type of game a family can do together. Be sure to have your child fill out an act of kindness form. During this month of giving I have talked to the kids about how they can make a difference. Please share with us how your child is making a difference or have your child fill out a form at Sunday school!
