CLC to Host Douglas County Singers:
Non Profit Community Choirs for Kids CLC will be the rehearsal and performance site for the Douglas County Singers, a new nonprofit that is setting out to take music education a step further by encouraging children to explore the oldest and most natural instrument in our society, their voice. Douglas County Singers provides two community choirs for children; a Primary Choir for kids in grades 1-3 and an Intermediate Choir for kids in grades 4-6. Neither of the choirs require any audition process, all children are welcome, and each choir can have an enrollment of 50 singers. The program was founded by Linda Holcombe, CLC’s Music Director. Linda has a 25-year history in both music teaching in the public schools and in church music, and she has witnessed the joy that music can bring to people’s lives. Douglas County Singers was founded on strong beliefs that music is essential for children’s intellectual and emotional development. Kids can learn about the world, gain social skills and even improve their math abilities through music. Recent cutbacks and reductions of staff and resources in schools have directly affected music programs as part of grade level education, and this is what encouraged Linda to start the Douglas County Singers. Being a nonprofit organization, Douglas County Singers is dedicated to bringing a music experience to all children, regardless of their current singing ability or background. A main goal of the program is making participation in the choirs affordable and accessible for all families. Douglas County Singers is unique in that it will create a fun and exceptional musical experience for children by exploring all styles and genres of music from Classical and Pop to Jazz and Broadway. More information about Douglas County Singers and registration can be found at www.douglascountysingers.com or by calling (866)-981-8559. Rehearsals begin on February 13th, so register online today!

Pastor Tom’s Message
Saint Who? Over the years of my ministry I have collected a lot of books and placed in files thousands of clippings from newspapers, magazines and other sources. (I have four, four drawer filing cabinets full! Much of it collected before computer internet resources were available!) One of my files I have to admit is very thin, the file on St. Valentine’s Day. There are a lot of stories and legends about St. Valentine. One story states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. Another story says that, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. Another story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell. In one of my personal library books it states: “The martyrdoms of three different Saints named Valentintus are celebrated on this day and in various Roman Catholic Churches where there are eight complete bodies and one head of Valentine venerated! Saint Valentine's Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church. “ While the Reformation mostly frowns upon the veneration of saints because we do not need saints to reach God, it still may be true that God uses saints to reach us. Someone has defined saints “as friends of God.” When you look into the history of St. Valentine (or most any saint really) we learn something much greater than the Hallmark holiday it has become. Take away all the pressure to show you love and appreciation for another on this one day of the year and what greater Christian message remains is that always we are to love God, whether God offers you miracles or not; love God, even as God reveals to you saints who have loved and love God, providing inspiration and hope for others. Don’t let Valentine’s Day pass this year without sharing your love and appreciation for others but also remember you are not only loved by God, but trusting God, the definition of a saint, asked by God to be a saint to someone else with the message of hope and inspiration! Happy St. Valentine’s Day! (and month!) Many Blessings + See you in Worship + Pastor Tom +

Pastor DJ’s Message Since Valentine’s Day will occur this month and that will either cause eye rolling or smiles, I thought it might be helpful to reflect on love. It’s a word we throw around often (when we say “I love you”) and one that we hear a lot (like in church where we hear “God is love”), but we don’t often take the time to define. We had a staff meeting recently where I shared some recorded thoughts by 4-8 year old poets when asked, “What does love mean?” Here are some of the more interesting thoughts: • When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth. • Love is what makes you smile when you're tired. • Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen. • You really shouldn't say “I love you” unless you mean it. But if you mean it you should say it a lot. People forget. • Love is what makes you smile when you're tired. The diversity in this group makes me realize that not only is there a wide idea about what love is, but that we probably have not spent much time, if any at all, figuring out what we mean when we say “I love you.” This month, even if it is a holiday met with much scorn, make sure you find someone you love and communicate what popped into your head when you sat and thought about what love means. With much love (it means I am happy you are a part of this community and reading this letter), Pastor DJ
New Member Class Series Our pastors are holding another new member class series Sunday Feb 9th at noon, Wednesday Feb 12th at 6:00 pm and Sunday Feb 16th at noon. A meal will be served at all the classes and nursery care is available upon request. Please join us.
WHAT IS LENTEN FAITH Faith mentoring is part of the confirmation ministry at Christ Lutheran Church. It pairs individual youth with individual adults of the congregation and community in order to discuss faith and life issues and to experience the Lenten journey together. Young people are free to select an adult, with their consent, to be their Faith Mentor. Faith Mentors do not take the place of parents, pastors, teachers or peers, but provide an additional connecting point to other Christian adults and the congregation. If you are an adult that would love to start an "Incarnational Relationship" and go on a magnificent Lenten journey with one of our Confirmation youth, please sign up on the board in the Narthex.
HOW DOES THE LENTEN FAITH MENTORING MINISTRY WORK? On Tuesday, March 4th, the Faith Mentors, young people and their parents will meet for an orientation. During Lent, each student will meet with their Faith Mentor for five 30-45 minute sessions (generally, but not necessarily, after or before the Wednesday Lenten services) to discuss the week’s theme and a certain aspect of faith and life issues. Discussion guides are provided to help facilitate this time together.
WHAT CHARACTERISTICS SHOULD A MENTOR HAVE? Faith Mentors play an important role in the growth of a young person’s faith. Characteristics that are important for Faith Mentors to have include: • Love God and kids • Able to accept youth where they are and let them progress at their own speed • Accessible, open and willing to take the time to listen • A caring, non-judgmental supportive attitude • Mature and trustworthy • Faithful in their own Christian life Faith Mentors are special people in the lives of our young people. Theirs is the gift of trust and respect by a young person. They will receive as much as they give – it is an honor to participate in another person’s growth in faith.
WHAT TRAINING DOES A MENTOR NEED? No special background or training is required for someone to be a Faith Mentor.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF LENTEN FAITH MENTORING? The purpose of Lenten faith mentoring is to: 1. Expand each young person’s circle of trusted adults in the congregation. In a Search Institute report, only 29% of youth felt that adults in the church cared for them. 2. Enable each young person to see and learn how another adult (besides their parents) lives out their Christian faith. 3. Offer each young person a personalized learning opportunity to make sense of their own Christian Faith. In the same Search Institute report, more than 60% of the youth surveyed said they wanted to know how to learn to love life more, recognize right from wrong, and gain a sense of life’s purpose. 4. Gain broader adult participation in the young person’s learning process.
MENTORING MINISTRY? RESPONSIBILITIES AND ROLE OF FAITH MENTORS 1. Attend the Faith Mentor Orientation on Tuesday, March 4th at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Your mentee and parent(s) will also be at this orientation. 2. Meet the parents of your mentor at least once. (This may be done at the mentor orientation.) 3. Meet with your mentee five times during Lent for 30-45 minutes to discuss the week’s theme and related faith issues from the provided discussion guides. Both student and mentor have mutual responsibility of attending these sessions and making up any missed sessions. Preferably, worship with your mentee and meet after or before the Wednesday evening Lent worship services. 4. Complete an evaluation form at the end of Lenten Faith Mentoring. 5. Pray regularly for your young person during the mentoring process. 6. Respect and uphold the confidentiality of your discussions with your young person.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ROLE OF MENTEES 1. Ask an adult to partner with you for Lenten Faith Mentoring. Report your mentor’s name, address and phone number by January 15th, 2014. 2. Attend the Faith Mentor Orientation on Tuesday, March 4th at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Your mentor and parent(s) will also be at this orientation. 3. Meet with your mentor five times during Lent for 30-45 minutes to discuss the week’s theme and related faith issues from the provided discussion guides. Both student and mentor have mutual responsibility of attending these sessions and making up any missed sessions. Preferably, worship with your mentor and meet after or before the Wednesday evening Lent worship services. 4. Pray regularly for your mentor. 5. Participate to the best of your abilities. 6. Respect, learn from and maintain confidentiality of your discussions with your mentor.
WHO CAN BE A MENTOR? Each confirmand is free to choose any adult to be their faith mentor who is: 1. an active member of Christ Lutheran or other Christian congregation; 2. at least 18 years of age; or 16 and older whom have been trained 3. not their parent or relative; 4. someone they see as a good example of a Christian life style; 5. someone with whom they feel comfortable having “guided discussions” with; and 6. someone who consents to be their faith mentor. 7. someone who your youth can get to know that is a positive Christian role model If you are an adult that would love to start an "Incarnational Relationship" and go on a magnificent Lenten journey with one of our Confirmation youth, please sign up on the board in the Narthex.
