Lent, 2016 -“Navigating in an Uncertain World” Lent is a time for renewal, reflection, repentance, learning, and (here at CLC) mentoring. Ash Wednesday is on February 10! During the five Sundays of Lent and our five mid-week Wednesday mid-week services (between Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday), we will look to the basics of our faith as sources of confidence and creativity in response to the demands of life. We will discover “tools for navigation” in Luther’s catechisms. And old Martin himself may show up from time to time to “stir the pot” with his gospel-centered approach to living out the challenges of faith! We hope to see you on Sundays and Wednesdays during February and March.

Save the Dates! · New Member class will be held Sunday March 6. Please sign the response sheet if you are interested in participating. 12:1–3:15. Pastor Steve’s Message Dear Friends: One of my responsibilities as interim pastor is to become familiar with the Constitution and Bylaws of Christ Lutheran Church. While this is not a task that is the most exhilarating aspect of my ministry (!), it is important for the healthy functioning of our life together. Thanks are due to our church council, who are currently reviewing the ELCA’s model constitution in conjunction with the CLC Constitution and Bylaws. The council will likely recommend updates at the spring semi-annual meeting, scheduled for Saturday evening, May 21. At the spring meeting there will also be elections for Congregation Council, recognition of voting members for the Rocky Mountain Synod Assembly, and elections for the Board of Endowment and Legacy Funds, and for the congregation seats on the Christ Lutheran Preschool Board. That brings us to the Nominating Committee! The Nominating Committee met during the last week of January to begin the process of securing nominees for the various positions outlined above. Those serving are Sheri Halverson, council vice-president, Leslie Cantrell, Adrian Hafner, Don Alpern, Kristen DeBeer, and Ken Kroenberger. Their task is to seek and secure candidates for elected positions from the entire congregation. They will work on putting together a slate of nominees who will reflect the diversity of CLC. They welcome your input! They will be putting out some forms by which a person can nominate him- or her-self or someone else who is a member of Christ Lutheran. They will brainstorm to look for people who have gifts which will serve the church community. They will then follow up with nominees and discern their interest and eligibility, and also answer questions about responsibilities and terms of office. Watch for updates in the bulletin, e-news, etc., and also reflect on your own gifts and possible desire to serve. Blessings to you as we move into the season of Lent, a time of repentance and renewal for us all! Steve Berke, Pastor

We Our CLC Members and Visitors. Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone!

Pastor DJ’s Message Given that we are in the throes of winter and will likely at least have one more really bad snow storm before something resembling spring rolls along, I thought for the moment I’d put our lives in the context of the snowstorm. Specifically, I’d like you to recall the last time that you drove through a particularly tempestuous snowstorm. There’s a sense of fear spiked with adrenaline at streaking down an unmarked (or not clearly marked) path barely following the tire tracks of cars that may have passed minutes ago – or could be just a tenth of a mile ahead if the storm were bad enough to not be able to see that far. There’s something to be said for being able to see a great distance ahead. It’s something I particularly love about my normal drives or rides to the church building; it’s peaceful, relaxing, soothing, inspiring. Whether because it lets you take in the full scope of what’s coming your way, or because the beauty of such a great expanse is so artistic, it’s an incredible gift to have such a clear vision of things so far away. A snowstorm takes all of that and removes safety and comfort and can possibly only give you enough vision in front of you to feel like you’re not in danger… yet. Driving slowly doesn’t heal that terror, the only thing that does is finally arriving at your destination and knowing you don’t have to do that again for the while. Nonetheless, there are occasions where the road beckons despite the forecast and we must drive through the circumstances. This feels a lot like faith, although we don’t name it that. We tend to think of faith as something quite solid, when I quite enjoy Jean-Paul Sartre’s quip about belief, “To believe is to know you believe, and to know you believe is not to believe.” Faith or belief is best characterized as having just enough light or just enough vision to be able to make the next step, or drive the next 50 feet. When that moment has passed, you begin to see that there is enough light and vision to travel the next 50. So our faith is not certainty in the sense that we know what always will be everywhere, but it is the light (or the lamp to slightly twist the language of Psalm 119) which guides the next step in the darkness.

CLC Outreach News

MISSION QUILTERS This small group does so much In 2015, the Mission Quilters made:

• 34 quilts for Lutheran Family World Relief • 30 ground quilts for the aids orphans of Swaziland • 20 sundresses for Outreach Uganda and • 5 baby quilts for our New Mother’s Ministry Incredible! This group meets every first and third Mondays of the month at 9:30am in the fellowship hall.

Drive safely this winter, but recall that our faith calls us out of the warmth, to venture once again to uncertain and sometimes treacherous roads; only knowing and seeing enough to know that we go forward. We do not always know where but we trust that each step is faintly lit by what we believe is the light of Christ, the very presence of God alive in the world.

They are currently looking for some helpers so if you want a creative outlet that serves others – this is for you! No quilting skills necessary, the group will teach you. You can even work from home.

Peace, Pastor DJ

We’d like to take a moment to say THANK YOU to a special group in our congregation:

THE MAINTENANCE TEAM

This group of volunteers performs routine tasks on a monthly basis. Examples: replacing ballast; 50 plus light bulbs/florescent tubes; fixing leaking faucets, toilets, etc.; repairing drywall and ceiling tiles damaged by water leaks; fixing broken pew chairs; cleaning up the grounds; repairing broken sprinkler lines; cleaning the coffee maker; hanging banners and pictures; draining water lines in the winter and reactivating them in the spring; painting and touch up; trouble shooting problems with the electrical and HVAC systems; installed door locks; maintain exit lights; and many other tasks that improve safety and make the property more inviting. This group also completed several large projects recently including building a loft in the Sacristy for storage, build a gate in the trash enclosure to improve safety, and installed our new ice maker in the kitchen. It is estimated that this teams spends on average, 25 - 30 hours a month. At $15/hour, that equals $4,500 a year (a very conservative estimate). So – a special shout out to our Maintenance team for your time, efforts, talents, and dedication to CLC. Thank you Carl Douhan (lead); Paul Betthauser; Rick Boyer, Tom Coates, Tim Cook, Mark Edmunds, Roger Hubbard, Dave Kotta, Pet Koury, Leonard Lukasik, Alan Pearson, Mike Rucker, Norm Viste and Bob Weber. You Rock!

OUTREACH UGANDA

Change a Life... Sponsor a Child/Nurse Today! Help send a child to school. You can sponsor a child through Outreach Uganda's child sponsorship program for as little as $25 per month. Sponsorship helps these children succeed in life and also helps prevent the early marriage of girls! The Ugandan school year begins February 1st and sponsors are needed for all ages, but especially for elementary age Agwata school children, and three P-7 students, who have successfully completed their Primary exams and are ready for Secondary school (7th grade). There are also three University students, one boy studying to be a doctor, a second boy in Public Health and one girl in Travel and Tourism, who also need one additional sponsor to assist with their university costs. New for 2016 are Nurse Sponsorships. Our Agwata clinic which serves 7000 people has been overloaded with patients since May 2015 causing the two existing nurses to be working almost continual overtime. We are looking for three more sponsors at $300 per year to be able to hire a third nurse to absorb some of this work-

load. Just like sponsoring a child, payments can be made monthly, quarterly or annual via check or credit card. No letter writing is involved, but you would receive two clinic update reports each year. If you are interested in sponsoring a child or nurse, or still need to renew your existing sponsorship, please contact CLC member, Carol Davis at cldvis0989@aol.com or by phone at 303/898-2465.

New Facilities Coordinator Position for Building Maintenance and Repairs At the January 2016 Council meeting, the Church Council approved the creation of a CLC Facilities Coordinator, an unpaid, volunteer position, to assist with the day-to-day facility and grounds management issues for the church’s facilities and to help identify long-term planning, repairs, maintenance needs, and building improvements. Carl Douhan, a member who has long served as chair of the Building and Maintenance Committee, has agreed to serve as Facilities Coordinator.

Job Description: The Facilities Coordinator (Coordinator) is an unpaid position that will report directly to the Administrative Manager* (Manager), and indirectly to the Council Property liaison. The Coordinator assists the Manager with the day-today facility management issues and helps identify long-term needs. The incumbent oversees building and grounds related issues. All requests for maintenance and repairs, work orders, and the like are to be submitted by the church staff to the Manager. Requests will be forwarded to the Coordinator for action, by the Manager. The Manager will have final approval for all contracts and contract personnel.

Duties: • Identify, prioritize and coordinate the completion of projects for monthly work sessions • Schedule and/or complete projects requiring attention outside the monthly work sessions • Acquire materials and supplies required to complete monthly work sessions and special projects • To be consulted and provide input prior to assigning storage space to groups using the CLC property. • Serves as a point person for consultation prior to any modifications to the CLC property. (ie: paint colors, bulletin boards, permanent or temporary decorations, wall hangings, etc.) • Serves as the point person for all Scout Projects, reviews project for relevance and recommends approval, modification, or rejection

• Report to the Council Liaison monthly, or when necessary, to report completed projects or to call attention to significant issues. May recommend actionable items as deemed necessary. • Submit requests to the Manager for purchase of bulk, maintenance related items.Upon prior authorization by Manager, can commit CLC to spend to up to a limit of $5000.00 for repairs/improvements. • Become familiar with all the various systems, such as HVAC and electrical, grounds and parking lot maintenance and document findings. • Develop, manage and maintain an electronic copy and a hard copy of all maintenance related systems. Duplicate hard and electronic copies will be provided to Manager for reference. • Develop and update long-term capital improvement plan, in concert with the Manager, to assist with the budgeting process. • To be consulted and provide input in the selection of contractors used at CLC. • To attend staff meetings as requested by Manager. • Additional duties as determined by the Manager and/or Church Council. *(When the Operations Pastor has been called and is on site, at that time the Operations Pastor and the Administrative Manager will coordinate their roles and update the Facilities Coordinator responsibilities in the Administrative Manager’s job description.) We are grateful for Carl’s service as we move forward in 2016 to become more proactive in management and repairs for our wonderfully heavily used 30 year old facility. Please do not hesitate to contact Carl Douhan or Pete Koury (Council liaison for building and maintenance) if you have any questions, would like additional information, or would like to volunteer to serve on the Building and Maintenance Committee. Onward and Upward, -Bret Sumner Council President

hello from the preschool! We will have our Valentine’s parties with a pizza lunch and we also get to enjoy our music time with Ms. Linda! Our silver speakers will come and read to us, as well as, our local librarian. We are very excited about the silver speaker’s ladies. They visit us from Lincoln Meadows Nursing Home and the kids love to hear from their adopted grandma’s. Our chapel themes are, “Jesus Loves the Little Children” and “Zaccheus”. We are very excited to be hosting our annual Scholastic Book Fair on Friday, February 19, Saturday, February 20 and Sunday, February 21. We will be open all day on Friday for shoppers during preschool hours and sharing time with our families in the evening with a

pajama party and a visit from Clifford. This event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and refreshments will be served. On Saturday morning from 9-11 a.m., we will be open for a Grandparent’s breakfast and we will also be open to the church congregation on Saturday and Sunday during services. There will be a variety of books for all ages and we encourage everyone to stop by and take a look around. This is a community service and fundraiser for the preschool and we know everyone enjoys reading. Thanks for the support and feel free to come at any of the times we are open. Hope to see everyone there! Registration is going well and we are happy that the community feels our Preschool is a warm, inviting and loving environment. Thank you for the support you give us in telling others about our program. We deeply appreciate our ministry as part of the church! Have a great month. Deb and Blair

STEWARDSHIP: APPLYING BIBLE PRINCIPLES Money is a neutral commodity, a means of exchange. It is neither inherently good nor evil. But a wrong view of money can become a problem to us. In First Timothy 6:9-10, Scripture warns about the dangers of a determination to get rich: “But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil; and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.” When we have a consuming desire to get rich, when we are obsessed with money so that it becomes the focus of our time and attention, then we have made it the number one priority in our lives. In that spot, it replaces everything, including God. We begin to find our security in money, not in God and in God alone. However, when our view of God is right and our view of money is right, we will realize that money cannot buy security; money cannot purchase happiness; money cannot guarantee peace or joy or contentment. God alone can provide these essentials as we “ . . . strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness.” How do you view money? Is it at the center of your life, thereby perhaps replacing God’s rightful role? And equally important, are you using the money God has given to you to advance His kingdom and His righteousness?
