Coming in March!
Get Involved!
Are you interested in enhancing your church experience? Are you interested in meeting others that have something in common with you? Are you blessed and looking for a way to give back? Are you maybe struggling with something and can use some support? Are you willing to put your faith in action? If you answered yes to any of these questions then it’s time to get involved! There are currently 73 (yes, 73!) ways to participate at CLC. Seven youth programs, six adult education programs, ten fellowship groups, six music options, six caregiving ministries, five service focused fellowship groups, and eighteen CLC worship and/or building volunteer opportunities. And let’s not forget we have fifteen charity partners and four church events one can participate in. In our enews and bulletins, you will see many of our ministries randomly asking for help, new members, or simply making announcements. However, for a full view of what CLC has to offer, we encourage you to visit the CLC website at clchr.org and look around. When (not if ) you see something you like, contact Debbie or Dianne and they will help you get connected!
Lent 2017 at CLC: “Our Journey To Who We Are” Join us for a study of our journey as Christians during Lent this year with “Our Journey To Who We Are.” Beginning with Ash Wednesday on March 1st and continuing at weekend worship services, we will explore the history of Christianity in the world from before Christ, to the Unorganized Church, to the Organized Church, to CLC’s place in the Christian community, to our own Christian identity. During our Wednesday Lent midweek services beginning on March 8th, we will dig into this unending reformation of the church and the effect all of this has on us as individuals. It promises to be an exciting journey to Easter… join us!
WEDNESDAY NIGHT ADULT STUDY SERIES Pastor Eric’s weekly adult study series continues in February! As we continue our weekly journey through the book of Genesis, we look further now at the legendary narratives of the patriarchs in faith. Classes are at 7pm in the Sonrise Room and (as always) we hope to see you there.

Pastor Allert’s Message In his book Jesus is the Question, UCC minister Martin Copenhaver observes that Jesus asks far more questions than he answers. He points out that in the gospels, Jesus’ conversation partners ask him 183 questions, yet our Lord gives a straight-forward and direct answer to only 3 of them. Far more often Jesus is the one posing questions as he asks some 307 questions in the recorded history of his teaching ministry. Isn’t this interesting? One popularly frequented Christian mantra has been, (and rightfully so), that “Jesus is the answer!” However, Jesus himself seems rather willing to challenge us as disciples with the sort of questions that challenges our preliminary notions of faith and might also complicate our thinking. A. J. Levine and Doug Knight co-authored a book called The Meaning of the Bible. In it, they suggest that the value of the Bible consists in its ability to help us ask the right questions. I would agree with that position, and add to it that Holy Scripture also helps us to find answers to those questions as well. My own experience of faith has led me to believe that curiosity has a very peculiar and unique spiritual virtue. For many, it is our curiosity (sometimes paired along with doubt) that leads to a deepener and more comprehensive and more relevant faith. Our Christian faith, and the journey with the Holy Spirit, is one that doesn’t discourage questions, but rather embraces them as opportunity to further know the heart of God! It is in the inviting of God’s presence into the midst of our struggle that we again discover His faithfulness. Those areas of faith that we’ve always wondered… the life experiences that weighed us with tremendously heavy burdens to bear… the moments in the darkness where we strained to see something/anything resembling the light. February’s worship services are filled with scripture lessons that beckon us to come and draw nearer to Jesus. As Lent dawns soon enough in March, I invite you to open your hearts to the words of our Lord this month in worship. These words are for you, and they offer to you questions both old and new, and also the eternal truth: that Jesus is the Answer! Pastor Eric J. Allert
A Word of Grace
for Peace, Wonder, and Growth in Discipleship As 2017 has begun now in full swing, the Council and I have been able to review the summarized financial reports from Mr. Jeff Bergstrom and Mrs. Anne Burderus. I am excited to report that we have received 196 total pledges to the sum of $611,056 in support of the general budget spending plan for mission and ministry! This is a 13% increase over last year’s 174 pledges and 18% over last year’s total $519,323. God’s Spirit is truly at work in our midst for continued growth and the call to accomplish together His vision. Please try to join us in worship on either Saturday February 11th, or Sunday February 12th as we celebrate this church that God has entrusted us to care for, and our hope-filled response to further grow as disciples in His mission.
Make Plans To Sing With Celebration Choir For Our Good Friday Cantata! CLC’s Celebration Choir is gearing up to perform an exciting seasonal Cantata called “A Journey To Hope” for 7pm Good Friday Worship on April 14th. Rehearsals are on Thursdays from 7-8pm, March 9th through April 6th; with a final rehearsal on Wednesday, April 12th from 7-9pm. We are looking for high school and adult singers to join us for this very special event. For more info, contact Linda Holcombe at: lholcombe@clchr.org

Pastor DJ’s Message
Sin and Snow A recently ordained friend of mine said to me a few weeks ago, “It looks like my chants of ‘No more snow! No more snow!’ are obviously not working. To which I replied, “Well, I’ve been praying for snow, so it looks like we know who God likes more.” So that I can calm everyone down a little: yes, I am a snow-person, but I need another storm because we did not get the chance to build a snowman yet this winter. Indeed if it were so easy to manipulate God, in addition to irking a number of people in my immediate surroundings, I would be responsible for thousands of car accidents, countless bouts with depression from being forced to be isolated indoors, and deaths from fires from space heaters and homeless people with untreatable frostbite; all for the chance to roll a bunch of snowflakes into a few balls. A quick pause for reflection shows that even in my tiny little world, if I could create things my way, my seemingly innocuous preferences would cause irreparable harm to others. This is one of the pillars of Sin that is much deeper and broader than simply the bad things that we do. We are a disconnected world. We are a world where we have convinced ourselves that our preferences are law, that our logic for determining what is right is the rule. We are convinced that if we go about our lives just trying to not do harm, we are good people and will ride the easy train into heaven. Jesus is not so kind to such people in the Bible. But more so than that, the power of God to create new life is much greater than giving us an easy path to walk down when our breaths have ceased. It offers the ability to be active in creating a new world, where we have such concern for neighbor that we are willing to sacrifice our preferences and resources for theirs. It draws us into connection that we would pray for people who stand up for their rights thousands of miles away. It reveals to us the darkness and private-ness in which we live and lights a lamp to the genuine wounds of our world. It gives us connection to weep with a total stranger when their world collapses. It grants real life now. Though we may curse and grumble or dance and make snow angels at the events before us, the story of this creation is much larger than we can wrap our minds around. We are called to enliven this one small part while acknowledging the rest that is in God’s care, even if it is out of our minds and preferences; just as we are out of the minds of the vast creation, but always present in God’s. Blessings as you either shovel your way up or sled down God’s snowy mountain, Pastor DJ

Nonetheless, we did experience a slight, general, upward trend last year. For example, our unrestricted income increased by a little over 2%. When the contribution of the preschool is added in, our restricted income increased by 3.3%.

More significantly, our restricted income increased by almost 14.5%. Although this is a dollar increase of a little over $28,000, the majority of this came from just a couple of extraordinary contributions. In total, the contributions received from all sources in 2016 increased by 5.25% over that which we received in 2015.
When compared to our budget, we came up short on the income side, but managed to control our expenses enough to cover about ½ of the income shortfall. Attached is a summary and the details of our actual income / expenses as compared to our budgeted amounts for 2016.

WHAT IS LENTEN FAITH MENTORING MINISTRY? Faith mentoring is part of the confirmation ministry at Christ Lutheran Church. It pairs individual youth with individual adults of the congregation and community in order to discuss faith and life issues and to experience the Lenten journey together. Young people are free to select an adult, with their consent, to be their Faith Mentor. Faith Mentors do not take the place of parents, pastors, teachers or peers, but provide an additional connecting point to other Christian adults and the congregation. If you are an adult that would love to start an "Incarnational Relationship" and go on a magnificent Lenten journey with one of our Confirmation youth, please sign up on the board in the Narthex.
HOW DOES THE LENTEN FAITH MENTORING MINISTRY WORK
congregation. In a Search Institute report, only 29% of youth felt that adults in the church cared for them.
On Tuesday, February 28th at 7 pm, the Faith Mentors, young people and their parents will meet for an orientation. During Lent, each student will meet with their Faith Mentor for five 30-45 minute sessions (generally, but not necessarily, after or before the Wednesday Lenten services) to discuss the week’s theme and a certain aspect of faith and life issues. Discussion guides are provided to help facilitate this time together.
2. Enable each young person to see and learn how another adult (besides their parents) lives out their Christian faith.
WHAT CHARACTERISTICS SHOULD A MENTOR HAVE? Faith Mentors play an important role in the growth of a young person’s faith. Characteristics that are important for Faith Mentors to have include: • Love God and kids • Able to accept youth where they are and let them progress at their own speed • Accessible, open and willing to take the time to listen • A caring, non-judgmental supportive attitude • Mature and trustworthy
3. Offer each young person a personalized learning opportunity to make sense of their own Christian faith. In the same Search Institute report, more than 60% of the youth surveyed said they wanted to know how to learn to love life more, recognize right from wrong, and gain a sense of life’s purpose. 4. Gain broader adult participation in the young person’s learning process.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ROLE OF FAITH MENTORS 1. Attend the Faith Mentor Orientation on Tuesday, Feb. 28th at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Your mentee and parent(s) will also be at this orientation. 2. Meet the parents of your mentor at least once. (This may be done at the mentor orientation.)
Faith Mentors are special people in the lives of our young people. Theirs is the gift of trust and respect by a young person. They will receive as much as they give – it is an honor to participate in another person’s growth in faith.
3. Meet with your mentee five times during Lent for 30-45 minutes to discuss the week’s theme and related faith issues from the provided discussion guides. Both student and mentor have mutual responsibility of attending these sessions and making up any missed sessions. Preferably, worship with your mentee and meet after or before the Wednesday evening Lent worship services.
WHAT TRAINING DOES A MENTOR NEED?
4. Complete an evaluation form at the end of Lenten Faith Mentoring.
• Faithful in their own Christian life
No special background or training is required for someone to be a Faith Mentor.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF LENTEN FAITH MENTORING?
5. Pray regularly for your young person during the mentoring process. 6. Respect and uphold the confidentiality of your discussions with your young person.
The purpose of Lenten faith mentoring is to: 1. Expand each young person’s circle of trusted adults in the
