A Word of Grace
for Peace, Wonder, and Growth in Discipleship Wise Men, wealthy scholars and priests of the East, endured numerous dangers and traveled at great distances to bring their offerings of gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Christ Child. What a beautiful and meaningful example of stewardship they set for all future generations, helping us to understand the blessing of properly using and sharing God’s gifts. The Magi represent a sincere desire to seek after God, searching through science, nature, and their cultural traditions to communicate with their Creator and discover His will for them, even when it was something so unexpected. Imagine their long and difficult journey, possibly a 1500 mile expedition from Persia to Bethlehem, over mountains and deserts. What faith, determination and sacrifice they must have had – likely facing questions and skepticism from the beginning! Regardless, they overcame the difficult trials and tests of their journey, and persisted in their search for God’s truth. And when they did finally meet the Christ Child, they bowed down in worship. They offered Jesus the most precious of their gifts. Although they were the “wise men” of their day, they didn’t allow their ego to interfere with their unexpected discovery. Even when the journey surprisingly took them beyond the king’s palace in Jerusalem to the insignificant village of Bethlehem, they went forward in faith. Everything seemed so astonishing, and yet in humility they approached the Christ Child to worship Him and offer the best of their gifts. The Story of the Magi is not simply a cute part of Christmas, but it represents central characters who model a path of faith and stewardship worthy of imitation. They offer an example of a sincere search for God using the intellectual gifts they possessed; a willingness to overcome any obstacles or
challenging inconveniences in their journey towards God; and the witness of offering the best they had once they encounter the Christ Child. The Magi offer us a challenging perspective of Christian Stewardship; the truth that all we have - from life itself, to our intellectual abilities and specific talents, as well as our faith experiences and material possessions – all we have in life is a gift from God, and each of us is called to act as a proper and good steward of these gifts. I am again this year moved when I think about how the Magi were conscientious stewards with their knowledge, experience and wisdom, as well as stewards of their time and effort, which crowned (if you will) in their good stewardship of their treasure. As we learn to generously give of ourselves, of our time, talents and treasure, we only increase our own opportunities to be blessed! Christian Stewardship is all about becoming good caretakers of all that God has given us. Think about all that God has given us – our health, our family, our opportunities in life, our intelligence, our talents. God has given each of us special and unique gifts. And through Holy Scripture He teaches us all that we have is a loan. He lends everything to us, and reminds us that one day He will ask us to give a detailed accounting of what we have done with the gifts He has given us. Have we learned the blessedness of generously giving to others that which God has first given to us? Have we discovered the joy of dreaming how we can use all that we have for the glory of God? After all… our journey together doesn’t end at the Christ Child in the manger – it continues onward from there! - Pastor Eric J. Allert

Pastor Allert’s Message Fellow beloved family, friends and saints of Christ Lutheran Church; grace and peace to you from God, who is making all things new! I imagine some of us have made New Year’s resolutions. Among our various resolutions, commitments, hopes and dreams, there is one we hold in common as a church. Our mission is to grow disciples of Christ who change the world with God’s love. Each of us embodies that differently in our own ways and with our own unique passions and talents, but we all do that together as a community of faith that follows in God’s Spirit. I trust that whatever the next year brings, God will come with it filled with His grace. The grace might shine like a star – brilliant and bright – glaringly obvious and in plain sight. Or, the year ahead may have for you the graces of God which require you to have to search and look for it. In all likelihood, the new year will be filled a lot of both. Regardless, God will be lovingly present for you! Receiving God’s grace is like getting a sun tan. The sun is always shining, but it’s no good if you’re not in the right place to receive it. Additionally, too much time spent trying to receive God’s grace without first recognizing what God wants to bless us with often results in us feeling burned! So, as disciples, we practice getting in the right place to receive God’s grace. That’s what being a disciple involves; practicing toward a discipline, patterned behavior and eventually a way of life. Practice, practice, practice! A spiritual practice is anything that focuses your awareness and intention on God. Worship, prayer, meditation and reading the scriptures are obvious examples. (It strikes me even a bit humorous to think of how many of us seek to begin the New Year with resolutions having to do with eating, unintentionally come near to the spiritual practice of fasting!) Yet, like resolutions for many, spiritual practices also require diligent effort and awareness in order to remain consistent and faithful. But the more we practice our discipleship, the more the Spirit encourages us and gives us what we need. What we all want – what we need – is real meaning and purpose. And the way we receive this in a faithful community of people who are intentional about meaning and purpose is to practice our intentionally being in relationship with God. We miss out on the depth and glory and meaning of life, and the riches of God’s loving presence, if we’re not paying attention. One might make it through life OK, but they won’t have the same depth of joy and love and trust and purpose that they would otherwise have if they practiced letting God’s grace be part of their life. So I invite you to be intentional about your spiritual formation as a practicing disciple in the coming year. Find ways to place yourself in the “sun” of God’s grace. Any way will do: worshipping, praying, reading the scriptures, journaling, discipleship coaching with your pastors and ministers , retreats, participating in a covenant group, whatever deepens your awareness and openness to God. So if New Year’s resolutions are for you, I invite you to consider the following resolution: to engage in at least 12 hours of spiritual practice each month in 2017. Twelve hours is a small amount for a whole month — it’s basically three hours a week. This committed time spent in either prayer, worship, devotional study, or any other spiritual practice will be absolutely worth it – and I promise you that it will improve your life! You may even discover that some of us will surpass 12 hours by the end of the first month, but for others it’s a step ahead. It’s something we all can do, and we all can commit to practicing as disciples. Will you commit to that? I know that you can, and I’m very happy to help you along the way. May God’s blessings pour down upon you with abundance this New Year, and may you continue to grow in your journey with Christ! Pastor Eric J. Allert

Your participation is what shapes our culture and makes CLC a truly special place to belong! Thanks once again to all of you and have a Happy New Year!
Happy New Year I have fallen into the trap that many have this year, waiting until January to start something that I wanted to do. As noted in many articles and reflections, most people will fail at these resolutions and countless arguments have been laid about how and why these failures will happen. My suggestion is that maybe it has a little bit to do with one of our holy stories. As Jesus visits with a few of his ancestors in the faith (or descendants in the faith depending on how you look at it) on top of the mountain for the event we call the transfiguration, it is noted that Peter wanted to pitch some tents and remain there. However, the call back down the mountain is awaiting everyone. While Jesus is transformed on the mountain, the disciples seem not to be. Despite a mountaintop encounter with God, they remain much the same servants with much the same perspectives. Maybe that’s because expecting a mountaintop experience doesn’t all that frequently change who we are. Depending on a new year to be something different probably functions much the same way. That we’re expecting it to somehow be different – less struggles, more comfort, more inspiration, more time. Yet, as we will undoubtedly find out, humanity and ourselves will be much the same people we were before and we are presented with the world as it exists now – largely unchanged from a month before. Rather than be a sign of despair, I believe this to be a sign of hope. There is not a need to wait any longer, for our God is here. We do not need a bright shining light, a glowing face, a ride up the mountains to see the existence of God to make a move to change. Possibly, if we keep waiting for our mountaintop to show up it will come and pass by much like it frequently does. Instead, this is the world that God loves, and we are the people that God loves. Let’s stop waiting for something different and take a step into God’s future without the need for a fireworks display. Now is the time for the church to stand. Let us follow God not in the new year, but today. Pastor DJ Dent
Faithfulness In Our Church Community! I am sitting at my desk with amazement writing this article about our strong commitment to the world as Christians here at Christ Lutheran Church. We are blessed here at CLC to have a congregation that is led by Pastors Eric J. Allert and D.J. Dent, but most of all we are blessed because of our continued spirit, faithfulness, giving and helping all in our world who don’t have things we have. When I came to the congregation with a request to collect 300 shoe boxes for our sister church in Compton, Ca , (Pueblo De Dios) on Nov. 19th-20th, I thought this was going to be a huge challenge and prayed for us to reach the goal by Dec 4th. What happened next was just absolutely amazing, but first I must tell you the Incarnational relationship building that led to this amazing blessing. In 2006 we made our first meeting with the people of Pueblo De Dios on a high school mission trip to Compton, CA and the New City Parish Ministry. As we arrived and were getting settled in, one of our youth jumped over the fence to retrieve a ball that had been kicked over the fence. As the youth climbed over the fence, his hand got caught on the chain link fence and ripped a four inch gash into his hand. One of the youth from Pueblo De Dios took the shirt off his back and wrapped it around our youth’s hand to stop the bleeding and off to the hospital our youth went. This started one of the most amazing relationships I have encountered in my 15 years of ministry here at CLC. On that mission trip we found out that the people of Pueblo De Dios fed the community every week with fresh veggies and other local foods. Pastor Samuel Nieva Sr. and the church congregation applied for a grant from the ELCA for weekly money and it was approved. However, in 2008 that grant ran out and Pastor Samuel did not know what to do. I was in California on a youth Directors continuing education week and I stopped by the church for church service and was listening to the person from the ELCA explaining that they were going to have to find a way to support this ministry if they still wanted to do it. Pueblo De Dios was stunned! This is where I think God has us in places where he wants us. I returned to CLC with this on my heart and I spoke with our Sr. High youth and explained to them what had happened and how could we help. They came up with some awesome ideas and CLC responded with faithful and giving hearts and we have donated over $4,500 to this ministry every year since. This leads me back to my original blessing I started speaking about; 300 shoe boxes in 16 days. I still can’t believe it! With the help of two amazing people: Allyson Evans and Jill Staub,
we came together and hatched a plan Jesus would be amazed by of taking care of the poor and giving with faithful hearts. We reached out to our pre-school led by Director Deb Morgans, the Confirmation class here at CLC, Summit View Elementary school’s first grade class (94 boxes) and of course the congregation. We not only reached our goal of 300 boxes but we collected 400 shoeboxes! We also received a generous donation of 50 pairs of Reebok tennis shoes from Mike Stupica and the local employees of Reebok. Now with this amount of gifts, how does one get it there? This is where another blessing comes in: our miracle workers at Forward Air Freight (#Don&Kyle). Sharing again in our vision for mission and ministry, Forward Air Freight generously shipped all of the gifts/boxes (27 ex-large cartons) to Compton, CA for us. Forward Air has been tremendous in making this happen for five years, and a great word thanks goes out J.S. for this connection. Pastor Samuel picked up those boxes on Tuesday in Los Angeles as he prepares for a wonderful celebration called La Posada at Pueblo De Dios on December 17th. I want to thank everyone who made this happen and our relationship even deeper with our sister church in Compton, CA. Our brothers and sisters at Pueblo De Dios are sincerely thankful for all of our support. God is GOOD, and the people of CLC are an amazing congregation: YOU ROCK! God’s Peace, Gary Knutson DYFM
