Did You Hear About Stephen Ministry Coming to Christ Lutheran Church? So, in the December issue of this church Newsletter, I introduced Stephen Ministry to you as a ministry of After People… That Stephen Ministers are those care-givers who come alongside you – or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives – and provide comfort and support for as long after as needed. But being a Stephen Minister is much bigger and better than just helping other people. It also becomes a part of you – it changes you for the better. It creates an opportunity for faith to grow stronger. As a Stephen Minister, you will find God drawing you in closer and allowing you to be Christ’s presence to another person. Stephen Minister training provides additional help with skills that are used all the time as disciples in this world: with listening and caring; praying aloud; becoming a greater advocate for the neighbor; relating better to family, friends and neighbors… and so much more! The Council and I are excited to see this Stephen Ministry Program take seed here at Christ Lutheran Church, and further bless the congregation well into the future! This brilliant vision for this church (and the community around us) is a shining light in Christ Lutheran. God has given every disciple a heart that cares for other people, but each heart is uniquely crafted by its Architect. Some are blessed to be there in the midst of the need. Others are blessed to have the gift of encouragement,
promotion, and support. If you would like to learn more about Stephen Ministry, including discernment about your possible call to become trained and serve as a Stephen Minister here at Christ Lutheran Church, please contact either Pastor Eric or Pastor Gail directly in the church office. If you would like to know more about the ministry itself, how it might be especially helpful for you, or how you could help support Stephen Ministers including a financial gift to help seed the start-up costs for the training and on-going support necessary, please also speak with your Pastoral Team. Intensive training events have now been scheduled throughout the country for 2018, and leadership is reviewing our options for the best opportunity to move forward. Let us know right away of how this after ministry can grow in your life soon!

A Message from Pastor Eric A New Year… A New Horizon… A New Step with Christ! In January of 1919, ninety-nine years ago, Rev. Alpheus E. Marshall was reflecting on his first six months in ordained service at St. Paul’s United Church in Milton, Ohio. Rev. Marshall had joined the congregation a few months before the end of the First World War. At the time of his New Year’s address to the letter to the parish, the small church was being devastated by the flu epidemic that was raging through the community. But in the face of such intimidating concerns, the new pastor prayerfully proclaimed these great words of Spirit… “Dearly beloved, it is now six months since your call brought us together in work here, and during that time we have had trials, sorrows, burdens and sacrifices in the closing hour of this dreadful war. Victory has come for which we thank God. Yet now, upon entering a new year, great responsibilities face us. The Peace Conference will soon assemble to terminate finally the war and form a Society or League of Nations to protect and to arbitrate for the future welfare of the Nations of the World. The Church hopes and prays for more favorable conditions for extending the Kingdom of God on Earth… We must not be discouraged, nor grow impatient. Let us trust that the future may give us even greater opportunity of consecration and service. The times demand that we ‘go over the top’ in all our efforts… I implore you not to forget family prayer and the reading of the Holy Scriptures. Let us take care of the Holy Sabbath Day. And finally, remember that Mission is the great task of the Church today.” In ninety-nine years, certainly new horizons have come… and they have gone. Yet, the Truth of the church in the midst of each of those new dawns remains just as constant as ever. Rev. Marshall’s reminder for the hopes of more favorable conditions for the growth of God’s Kingdom is always a renewed hope. The cry to keep courageous and diligent in the work we achieve is more firm a call than it ever has been. The need for the church – for this church – to “go over the top” in all our efforts is likewise demanded of us by the times ahead. Not because of some gloomy backdrop of pending wars or disease… But rather because God remains ever faithful and constant in His goodness to us! The blessings of God’s love and mercy are scattered all around us – upon us – in such magnificent ways. Opportunity after opportunity… New growth after new growth… Next step after next step… Each day, we receive a beautiful new glimpse into the Spirit’s future for us as church. I hope you are able to peer into the joy of the awaiting 2018 year, and see it as I do: an open field filled with joyful blessings awaiting our discovery and the invitation to share them with all who are gathered!

We will begin accepting applications the week of March 4, 2018. Deadline for all complete applications is Monday, April 2, 2018. If you are unable to print the 2018 application from our website, please stop by the church office and we can assist you in obtaining the application. Please consider making a donation to the scholarship fund knowing you will be making a difference. If interested but have questions, please sign the response sheet. If you chose to donate, please write “scholarship” on your envelope or on the memo
portion of your check. Thank you in advance for investing in our CLC Youth, our future. Special thanks to our CLC Women's Book Club and Chicks with Sticks Group for making significant donations already from their recent Fall 2017 fundraisers! The Legacy and Endowment ministry offers several opportunities for you to participate at CLC. The “Tree of Life” is a meaningful way to honor someone or an event such a birth of a child, anniversary, baptism, etc. or to memorialize a family member. The leaves are engraved with your message and place on the wall.
The “Wish” list is another way to provide a tangible gift to CLC. An information brochure on the “Tree of “Life” can be found underneath the Tree on the table. The “Wish List” is also there identifying the various needs of CLC. If you need additional information. Please contact Steve Strom (sstrom58@gmail.com) or call CLC. Your gifts are certainly welcome and appreciated by the members of CLC.

Thank you to all of you that helped with the Pueblo De Dios Christmas Boxes!
Our church collected 346 shoeboxes to our friends to share with the community of Compton. It is such a blessing that we are able to share Christmas JOY with people that struggle day to day. This is definitely a church wide project that could not be accomplished without your help. We were also able to send them Vacation Bible School materials and Sunday School material. Be on the lookout for pictures. We hope to be able to share some soon.
CALL COMMITTEE UPDATE
December saw the Spirit of God once again at work in and through your Call Committee. First round interviews were held with each candidate, and further discernment of course followed before breaking for the holidays. More work is now to begin soon in January as we listen closer to what God is speaking to us as His church. Please continue to keep Pastor Eric, our Call Committee, the Church Council and our staff in your supportive prayers. Your efforts to demonstrate your love for the leadership moving ahead have been a wonderful blessing. We thank you for the additional patience that you have given, and the recognition of the importance for the process. Additional updates will be made through the appropriate release methods when ready.

SOFIA: Stories of Faith in Action
Boy Scout Troop #645 has been busy revamping the Sonrise Room to make it brighter and more welcoming to all. Thanks to all the men and boys in that group for their hard work! The maintenance team has worked on so many projects lately- painting the curbs in the south parking lot with reflective paint, cleaning and organizing many closets and storage areas, cleaning gutters, changing furnace filters, changing lights, and so many tasks to keep us safe, secure and well-organized. Kudos to all the maintenance team members for their efforts and dedication to CLC! Volunteer Opportunities:
For the next several months, I will focus a spotlight on various ministries around CLC. This month, I’d like to focus on the people who greet folks before each service. I have heard from many members and visitors how welcoming it is to be greeted with a warm smile and handshake upon entering the church for service. My hat’s off to those volunteers who serve this ministry and make CLC an inviting, hospitable place to worship! Of course, if you would like to join that or any other ministry, we would be glad to add your name (and your smile!) to the schedule. Please contact Karen for more information at volunteeer@clchr.org or 303.791.0803, ext. 110.
Adult Mission Trip Opportunities
Please join us on Thursday, January 11 at 6:30 p.m. to learn about adult mission trip opportunities. We plan to take a group to Sky Ranch in early May, and Carl Douhan will speak about that trip and the projects that are planned. Carol Davis will also be here that night to talk to us about a possible trip to Uganda in the summer of 2018. I know that people from our congregation have joined Carol in Uganda previously, and I’m so looking forward to hearing all about the possibilities for next summer! This meeting was originally scheduled earlier in December, so if you weren’t able to join us then, please plan to hear all about these exciting opportunities in January!
LOOKING FORWARD Recycling at CLC Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s Day share the same date in 2018! “No greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13
In order to be good stewards of God’s Creation, we continually look for ways in which we can love and protect the earth. Recycling is an easy and helpful tool in protecting Mother Earth. Please use the blue recycle cans throughout the building to recycle clean paper, cans, plastic bottles, and even Starbucks cups! Questions or ideas? Contact Pastor Gail at pastorgail@clchr.org

HAPPY NEW YEAR! By Jenny Allert
The New Year is a time of promise. We like to make our resolutions, vow to something better and different. This year what are you looking to accomplish? In the health world, January is National Blood Donor month. The gift of blood is just like the new year, a gift of a new start, a gift to help safe
a life. Blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person. A decision to donate your blood can save a life, or even several if your blood is separated into its components, which can be used individually for patients with specific conditions. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. is in need of blood. Less than 10% of available donors actually give blood each year. O negative blood type specifically is in high demand and is often in short supply. If you are already a regular blood donor, thank you for giving the gift of life. If you have not given blood please consider adding that to your bucket list this New Year. Bonfils Blood Center is at the Church a few times each year, next time they are here be sure to sign up!
WEDNESDAY NIGHT ADULT STUDY
