Call Committee Update Last month was another very busy but exciting month for our 2017 Executive Pastor Call Committee. On June 6th, the committee met with Assistant to the Bishop Rev. Sarah Moening for (re-)introductions and additional orientation for the process ahead. Additionally, the committee worked together to formulate questions for the eventual first round of interviews with candidates. The next week, on June 13th, the committee met again for an intentional time of group-building fellowship and listening to one another’s thoughts about the hope for the process and who God is preparing to be our next pastor with Pastor Eric. Finally in June, the committee met again one week later on June 20th to review our first slate of names and Rostered Minister Profiles (RMPs) for potential candidates received from the Synod Office. In the weeks ahead, as personal summer plans best allow, the committee will be diligently working to review together the RMPs and begin to schedule the first round of interviews. We thank you for your continued prayers and support for the committee, for the congregation, for the Synod staff that have been very helpful, and for each of the candidates discerning God’s call for them.

Hello and happy summer from the preschool! Preschool is in full swing with summer camp. The children are having lots of fun talking about the beach, animals and playing with friends! We will be planting flowers soon on the patio. Take a look after the 26th of June to see our hard work! We have a wonderful bible theme around creation this summer and the children are learning many new songs. It fills our hearts to hear them so spirited with the love of Jesus in their hearts. We will resume regular school the last week of August. We still have a few opening for the fall. If you know of anyone who may be interested, please ask them to stop on by. Blessings! Deb and Blair

Welcome

Rev. Gail Mundt On June 22nd, Pastor Gail officially began working with CLC as our Bridge Pastor. A Bridge Pastor is an ordained minister that serves on a church staff in a temporary role that lasts for a period of time as needed during a transition process. While the 2017 Executive Pastor call process continues, Pastor Gail will be working in shared team ministry with Pastor Eric and staff to primarily provide supporting roles in caring for: visitation and pastoral care, worship and education, bringing the parish parochial records up to date, and additional pastoral presence for staff and volunteers in the office. Pastor Gail has a life-long love for God and God’s people and is eager to fully immerse herself in God’s ministry sharing the love, grace and forgiveness of Jesus Christ, wherever and however she is led. She has enjoyed an extensive career in ministry throughout the world including Slovakia, Japan, Austria, and of course here in Colorado. Please be sure to greet and welcome Pastor Gail into our church family in the days and weeks ahead!

Message from our new Volunteer & Care Coordinator, Karen Patz Hello fellow members of CLC! As your new Volunteer and Care Coordinator, I’d like to introduce myself and tell you a bit about myself. My husband, Randy, my son, Landon, and I have been members of CLC since 2011. After I retired from teaching in Denver Public Schools after 30 years, I found myself at loose ends and unsure how to fill my time. When I saw the posting in the bulletin for a new Volunteer coordinator, I believed that I had found a new way to serve my church. Luckily, Pastor Eric and the members of Personnel committee agreed. I greatly relish the idea of getting to know more and more members and figuring out how to tap into peoples’ spiritual gifts in order to get folks involved and engaged to do God’s work here at CLC and in our community.

From Pastor Allert Pastor Eric here… Pastor Eric there… Pastor Eric EVERYWHERE!!! So in June, I had two specifically great experiences – on both occasions with our very own Gary Knutson – as I received orientation and introduction tours to both Harvest Farms and Sky Ranch. It was very clear to me why both of these ministry locations have such a near and dear place in the heart of the congregation throughout the year! What a beautiful opportunity, not just in the remarkable geography and location of both outreach opportunities, but the outreach and care in Christ’s name that goes on in both places. God be praised! Now in July, the day after I return from my vacation in Europe, I will be off once again with Gary to join up with even more of our youth! This time, I’ll be flying down to New Orleans to meet up with everyone on mission in Baton Rouge. As both cruise-ship respite and jetlag are both forced to give way to service work, I truly look forward to digging into the thick humidity with our youth as we care for the needs of God’s families that reach out for both aid and strengthened relationship. I can’t wait for this Christ-filled opportunity to not only hear the life stories of our youth, but also the holy opportunity of making memories with them in service. And then looking toward the future, after a truly wonderful VBS taking place the end of this month, it’s once again back up to Sky Ranch via Atlanta, Georgia. In August, the ELCA is holding its Rostered Leaders Gathering in Atlanta (another opportunity to master “deodorant management” skills). Flying back on Friday the 11th, I’ll be heading right on up to lead Family Camp with Gary for the weekend. Make sure and get your registrations in early – mine is in! There’s so much excitement all around us as the Spirit of God continues to guide and move throughout the church! I hope and pray that you are filled with that same excitement. I also thank you not only for your prayers for my safe travels, but also for your continued support and encouragement as we all venture together with Christ! It’s in His name that we journey on - always excited at what blessing He has for us next!

ELCA to Celebrate 500th Anniversary of the Reformation with Public Event in D.C. The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), will host a commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation on Oct. 31 at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Washington, D.C. Eaton will be joined by the Rev. William O. Gafkjen, bishop of the ELCA Indiana-Kentucky Synod and chair of the ELCA Conference of Bishops; the Rev. Richard H. Graham, bishop of the ELCA Metropolitan Washington, D.C., Synod; and ELCA Vice President Bill Horne. The event will be open to the public and available online via livestream. All are invited to participate and honor the Reformation anniversary as the ELCA bears public witness to Christ, who frees us to love and serve our neighbor, and as we look to the future to which God is calling us. SOFIA

(Stories Of Faith In Action)

Recent Outreach Happenings Recently, a Littleton Assisted Care facility caught fire. All the residents were evacuated and have temporary housing. However, these other homes were not supplied with enough linen as these are privately run home. The residents of course lost everything and could not contribute. Luckily, one of the nurses put out a call for help on Facebook where our own Kathy Pfalzgraff brought it to CLC’s attention. Outreach money was used to purchase 6 sets of sheets which were then delivered to the nurse. Outreach was able to support Carol Davis and Outreach Uganda. Several pairs of underwear were purchased to be distributed to the girls and women that Carol serves. Outreach also purchased the mini pocket devotion books that were given to honor all our Dads on Father’s Day. In addition, Outreach donated $250 to the CLC Youth mission trip as the mission trip is definitely an outreach service event. The staff would like to thank everyone for contributing to the outreach budget where we can truly help others and support our ministries. Three Cheers for doing God’s work!!!

“YAGMs?”

You made that up! Actually, no… God did! Ninety-six young adult volunteers from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America have accepted the call to serve with the ELCA's Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGMs) during the 2017-2018 program year. This is a record number of volunteers for the year-long program that started in 1999 with eight young adults who volunteered to serve in the United Kingdom. Young Adults in Global Mission is an international mission opportunity for young people from the ages of 21 to 29 in which volunteers live and serve with ELCA companion churches and partner organizations around the world. Country programs are in Argentina/Uruguay, Australia, Cambodia, Central Europe, Jerusalem/West Bank, Madagascar, Mexico, Rwanda, Senegal, Southern Africa, and the United Kingdom. In addition to Hungary, the Central Europe program will add a site in Serbia. This year’s group of young adults will depart for their year of service August 23. If you would like to know more about the Young Adults in Global Mission program of the ELCA, please contact Candice Hill Buchbinder at Candice.HillBuchbinder@elca.org or 773-380-2877.

nursing), although it would take another century (1983) before it was named parish nursing. Today, hundreds of congregations across all denominations utilize parish nursing in some form or another to care for the health of the congregants. (Information obtained from History of the Deaconess and Parish Nurse article: www.thelda.org)

Parish nursing as been a long-standing tradition in the Lutheran Church. Although here at CLC we do not have a specific Parish Nurse Program, it is our hope we can grow a health corner ministry team. A place where we can offer wellness information, and programs that helps us to better care for ourselves, and each other. It is our hope we can have many different members who work in the medical or mental health fields contribute to our monthly newsletter article, and help plan health related events. If you are interested in contributing to the Health Corner newsletter article, or planning a health care related event, or have a topic you would like to see discussed please contact Jenny Allert at jennyallert@yahoo.com or 253-376-4494. The History of Parish Nursing: Diakonia is the Greek word for service and is seen as the serving, caregiving, and healing arm of the church, essentially the caring of the whole person. Since the period of the early church healing has been an integral part of the Church’s ministry. The early Church deacons were often widows who took up work with the Church to care for, and comfort the sick and the poor. During the middle ages healing ministry was carried out by most religious organizations. Then as the Science of medicine was born in the Renaissance period, Christian healing was ignored. In the early 1800’s there was a renewal movement to rebirth the role of the deaconess and nursing in the Church life. It was during this time deaconess set up transition homes, and as Florence Nightingale was birthing the nursing movement she studied with the deaconess, and that helped developed the nursing connection between faith and healing. Professional nursing today still looks to our nursing mother Florence Nightingale and her strong support and advocacy that in order to care for a person’s health you must also care for their faith at the same time. Deaconess ministry and nursing ministry were initially linked with “Deaconess Hospitals” set up all over the country. In these institutions women lived and trained. Eventually over time not all nurses become deaconess, and not all deaconess became nurses. In 1881 parish nursing was born (deaconess

Sunscreen, Sunblock, SPF... What is the difference? So often these words are used interchangeably but there are very distinct differences. The type of skin protection we choose for ourselves is especially important if you have sensitive skin issues, knowing the difference can help you make the best decision depending on your skin and the situation. The major difference is sunblock reflects the UV rays, is usually much thicker when applied (I always think of the lifeguards with the white nose from using sunblock), sunscreen include ingredients that absorb the UV rays before they reach the skin. One skin consideration if you choose to use Sunblock and are acne prone, it will block the pours and could increase acne issues, at the same time those with sensitive skin are more likely to react to the ingredients in sunscreen. Sunscreen for sensitive skin often offers a combination of sunscreen and sunblock. So let’s talk about this SPF number, what does it really mean and am I more protected? First lets acknowledge 2 types of rays to be protected from UV reaches the earth in two forms UVB and UVA rays. UVB plays a significant role in skin cancer and the type of ray that SPF targets. If sunscreen is applied correctly (and it is often not applied in correct quantities, and thus only offers 1/3 of the coverage), SPF 15 blocks 93% of the rays, SPF 30 97%, and SPF 50 98%. SO here is where is gets tricky. UVB plays a significant role in growth of skin cancer but it is known that UVA may actually start the skin caner and can develop with no redness or sunburns. The higher SPF (over 50) often have decreased UVA protection in order to increase the UVB protection. For this reason most specialist encourage SPF between 30-50 for good UVB protection AND contain some combination of the following UVA protections ingredients: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, avobenzone, ecamsule, and oxybenzone in order to have optimum protection. These sunscreens are often labeled multi or broad-spectrum protection. Sunscreen is important to protect you from the suns damage, but so is seeking shade, and using protective clothing (like hats) whenever possible! (Information obtained from the Skin Cancer Foundation)

DID YOU KNOW #3

July is a busy month around Youth Ministry here at CLC. We have two major things that happen – do you know what they are? #1 is the Senior High mission trip from July 6-16, and #2 is Vacation Bible School from July 24-28. This year’s mission trip takes us to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where we will work on homes ravaged by floods throughout the city that displaced over 100,000 people. We have 35 youth and 11 adults going this year. Fun fact: Chad Alexander has been our bus driver over the years his kids have been in youth ministry, and he will have logged over 12,700 miles driving. That is very impressive!! VBS has again reached its maximum capacity of 222 kids this year. We have achieved this goal all 15 summers that I have been here. We have over 85 youth and 25 adults making this happen once again. We have to thank Allyson Evans and Chris Schaeberle for Co-directing a fabulous week. The “Did-you- know“ part of this is that VBS fees collected help support our Sunday School ministry for the year, family events for the year, and many other youth ministry programs throughout the year. Our VBS is one of the best in the community and top-notch every year because of our volunteers here at CLC. We also have to give Chris Porter a big shout out and thank you for his building of the VBS stage for the last seven years.

Family Camp 2017 is August 11-13 up at Sky Ranch. We have had great participation over the years with 7-10 families and over 40 people each year. I would like for us to have more families participate. That is why this article is going in the newsletter early this year. First, what makes a family? If you are part of the CLC family, that’s all it takes, whether you have a family of one or a tribe of five. We will meet at CLC on Friday August 11th and convoy up to Sky Ranch. Our informational meeting for the family weekend is August 9th at 7 PM. We will discuss logistical issues in that meeting on how meals work, etc. Activities include hiking, fishing, high ropes, low ropes for smaller kids, arts and crafts, Foosball tournament, and outdoor games. Pastor Eric will be joining us this year and will lead Sunday morning scripture conversation/communion on the deck. He also wanted the weekend to have a theme, which we will reveal throughout the month of July and first part of August. The cost is $50 per family per night, so a total of $100 for the weekend. This will include indoor showers, indoor rooms, indoor eating, and Saturday night Brisket dinner. If you want to join Gary in the campground with your trailer or tent, you may also do that. There are electrical hook-ups in the campground. Come see what Family Camp is all about! Sign the response sheet or send Gary an email if you’re interested.

Want to know more about either the co-ed or the men’s softball team here at Christ Lutheran? Do you wonder... Is there room for me on the team? How good do you need to be? How much grace is freely received? When and where are games? When does the next season start? Is there is a registration fee to play? Just contact either Gary Knutson at gknutson@clchr.org or Craig Triebel at craigandbarbara@gmail.com to find out more! We’d love to see you as part of the team, either on the field or cheering us on from the bleachers. It’s a great way to have Christian fellowship together while having holy fun in the community!

New Members Annual Dinner Pastor Eric and Jenny Allert are excited to return a wonderful custom back to Christ Lutheran Church. On July 23rd, they will once again host and celebrate a dinner given at their home in warm welcome and celebration for all of the new members of CLC received the previous year (back to the summer of 2016). If you would like to pass along a personal greeting to specifically welcome these new members, please make sure that you share it with Pastor Eric in email at pastorallert@clchr.org by July 16th so that it can be delivered at the dinner. Thank you!

“WIND AND SPIRIT” ON THE JOURNEY TOGETHER!

Have you heard of the new and exciting ministry here at Christ Lutheran Church known as Wind and Spirit? Judging by the growing number of people registered for this group’s mailing (currently at 15), the word is getting around! This unique monthly fellowship and bible study opportunity for motorcycle riders and convertible/Targa-top vehicle owners is truly a great way to get to know more about God at work in and through us as we care for the beauty of creation all around us. Weather-permitting, we enjoy a special fellowship time together that begins with introductions, then a devotional/brief bible study, and finally a planned scenic enjoyable cruise together through some of God’s beautiful creation around the local areas of the range (often stopping for a light meal together). Cost will be your fuel and your

food, and friends are certainly Wind & Spirit welcome to join in. Our next scheduled event is for Sunday July 16th starting at 1:00pm in the church parking lot. For this particular event, we are considering one of two options; either a ride up to Squaw Pass/Echo Lake and then down to Idaho Springs with a stop to eat along the way, or to Golden Gate Canyon State Park and back through Black Hawk/Central City via Peak highway to eat Lyons. We’re also always up for additional ideas to venture to (especially as Pastor Eric is new to the state and wants to take in all he can!) Please contact Pastor Eric at pastorallert@clchr.org to find out more!
