The apostle Paul wrote in Acts 20, “You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my own needs and to those who were with me. In everything I showed you, that by working hard in this manner, you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus: that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” These words of faithful wisdom and blessing are just as true now as they were nearly 2,000 years ago – if not more so. But where Paul reminds us as believers the importance of Christ’s teachings, a relatively new scientific field known as "Neuroeconomics" is seeking to engage in the conversation by studying the realms of economics, psychology, and neuroscience in an effort to understand how we make our decisions around stewardship. In other words, where Paul approaches the dialogue from a faith perspective, neuroeconomics tries to explain how various financial, psychological, and neural factors work together as we make money-related choices. Researchers have just begun to scratch the surface in our understanding of “behavioral economics”, a field of study that looks at the emotional and cognitive factors that influence financial decisions. But neuroeconomics goes in a different direction by examining actual brain mechanisms, such as which areas of the brain are particularly active when processing money-related matters. A neuroeconomics study released in July last year from the University of Zurich in Switzerland suggests something rather exciting that the words of Jesus recounted by Paul in Acts 20 are right on point. In a Medical News Today article by Maria Cohut, it is reported that “Researchers have found a connection between happiness and the performance of selfless acts. Giving to others, they say, activates an area of the brain linked with contentment and the reward cycle. It has long been acknowledged that acts of generosity raise levels of happiness and emotional well-being, giving charitable people a pleasant feeling known, in behavioral economics, as a "warm glow." But so far, no studies have investigated the mechanics behind the correlation between altruism and happiness… The study confirmed the researchers' initial hypothesis that the ventral striatum and the temporoparietal junction, (where the temporal and parietal lobes come together,) interacted when generous behavior was displayed. They noted that the orbitofrontal cortex, an area of the brain linked with decision-making, was also involved.” Now, there was a tremendous amount of scientific discovery there – which is always exciting in one way or another. And certainly, the researchers are very enthusiastic about these findings, going so far as to further imagine how their newfound knowledge might provide ways of reinforcing generous behavior with the promise of a happier life. If you would like, you can find out the details of this research for yourself by digging and sifting through the Nature Communications journals as I did... Or, like Paul, you could just remember the words of the Lord Jesus, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Pastor Eric J. Allert
News From the Preschool
VBS Support
Hello and happy summer from the preschool! Preschool is in full swing with summer camp. The children are having lots of fun talking about the beach, animals and playing with friends! We have planted some vegetables and are seeing some beans taking root! We have a wonderful bible stories about heroes this summer and the children are learning many new songs. It fills our hearts to hear them so spirited with the love of Jesus in their hearts. We will resume regular school the last week of August. The playground fence was replaced and looks amazing. Please help us keep the playground a fun and safe place to play. We still have a few openings for fall if you know of anyone who may be interested please ask them to stop on by. “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love." 1 Peter 4:8 Blessings! Deb and Blair
On the grand ship that is sailing in the Fellowship Hall, the USS VBS2018, there are a number of donation requests for King Soopers and Sam’s Club gift cards. If you are inclined to support VBS by purchasing a card or six, you might consider purchasing those cards through our scrip program so that CLC benefits twice. The church will get back the percentage from the card purchase, and then VBS will use the gift/scrip cards to purchase supplies and snacks. Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
Welcome... Jack DeBeer to the IT team Jack is a senior in high school. He attends classes in Computer Networking at Arapahoe Community College while concurrently enrolled at STEM School Highlands Ranch. Jack also works as a Computer Technician Apprentice at SwiftPage, a customer management software company in downtown Denver, through the CareerWise Colorado apprenticeship program. He holds several industry-level certifications in computer repair and networking, and is thrilled to be a part of the IT Team at CLC! Mark Munson to the Personnel Committee Mark is looking forward to working with the other members of the Personnel Committee. He and his wife April (and their 2 boys) were members of CLC back from 2004 - 2007, when their boys were participating in confirmation, youth group, & high school mission trips. Career goals took them away from CLC, but they remained connected to the many friends here and their boys continued the Mission Trips with Gary and the other youth. The family found themselves back in the Denver Metro area in 2017 and have rejoined CLC! Mark is retired from 32 years of government service, with the majority of those years in a supervisory/management role. As a supervisor of approximately 300 staff, it was his pleasure to get to know the staff not only as professionals, but their aspirations and private lives as well. Mark states, “It will be a pleasure to serve on this committee, and I take this responsibility seriously.” Brent & Gillian Canada and family will be greeting you on Sunday mornings at the 9:30 service. Gillian has also expressed interest in joining the Visitation Team. David and Tina Kaiser joined a Worship Team at the 11:00 service, while Wayne and Cheryl Kinder joined a Worship Team (at least for the summer) at the 5:00 service. Linda Ault will also be greeting you with a smile and handshake at the 9:30 service. Marie Serold has given her time to the Mission Quilters, card-making ministry, as well as making communion bread. Each of these wonderful people knows that one of the keys to a vital church community is the engagement of the members, and they are doing their part to engage and connect with others.
Dynamite is our youth group for our 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. Registration for this program will begin in August. Our first gathering will be September 9 from 5:00-7:00 in the fellowship hall. If you are interested in helping with this monthly ministry in the fall please contact Gary Knutston at gknutson@clchr.org or Allyson Evans at childrensministry@clchr.org.
Sunday School Sunday School is out for summer! The registration link will be ready in early August. If your child has never attended Sunday School or it has been a while, I strongly encourage you to sign them up and get them involved! Not only do the kids learn a lot about the Bible and the life of Jesus, they start to develop relationships with their peers and other adults in the congregation. As kids get older, it is harder to get them to participate in activities if they don’t have relationships with others. We are here to help form those relationships so that when it is time for Confirmation and high school youth group, they are ready to go hang out with their friends. Sunday School begins September 9 during the 9:30 service. If you are interested in volunteering as a teacher or for gathering materials for special projects, please feel free to contact Allyson at anytime for more information childrensministry@clchr.org. Confirmation is for our 7th and 8th grade students. Registration and information nights will be held two different nights, please choose one to attend: August 22 or August 29. Both nights the 7th graders will meet from 6:30-7:00 and the 8th graders will meet from 7:15-7:45. It is important that a parent and middle schooler both attend the meeting to hear all the important information given and to fill out the required forms. If you need more information about our Confirmations program please feel free to contact Gary Knutson at gknutson@clchr.org.
IT’S VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL TIME! Thank you all for your continued support through this great adventure! Vacation Bible School is July 23-27, 2018 from 9:30-noon each day. Our theme this year is Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus. Kids find that Jesus rescues them when life gets stormy. We can’t wait to introduce your kids to our Bible Buddies and share with them how Jesus rescues us and loves us, even when we struggle. Please check our Facebook page for updates, Christ Lutheran VBS Highlands Ranch July 23-27, 2018. Parents, be on the lookout for informational emails as we get closer to the date.
VBS Volunteers for the Win! Have you signed up to volunteer for VBS yet? We will have 220+ participants and that requires a whole lot of help! If you are available the week of July 23-27 and love to have a crazy, good time, please use the same link that is on the church website and Facebook page to sign up to volunteer! If you are 6th grade to 100 years old, we’d love to have you! We will also have things that need to be done before VBS begins so if you aren’t available that week, be on the look out for more volunteer opportunities.
DONATIONS ARE STILL NEEDED FOR VBS This ministry is such a success impart to all the donations we receive from our congregation. Our ship is still sailing in the fellowship hall! Please stop by and select some items to donate. We also have our buckets in the fellowship hall for you to leave your donations. We’d love to have our items in by July 1 or as close to that as possible. It takes some time to get organized so the more time we have the better. Thank you so much for your continued support of our VBS program! If you have any questions about volunteering or donations for VBS, please contact Allyson Evans and Chris Schaeberle at christlutheranvbs@gmail.com!
Mark your calendars now for Family Camp! We will head up to Sky Ranch for a weekend of fun August 10-12. All are welcome to join! Please talk to Gary if you have questions! gknutson@clchr.org Our high schoolers will be returning from their mission trip and the ELCA National Youth Gathering in Houston, Texas on July 3. While they have been in Houston they have helped with Hurricane Harvey recovery projects, experienced energized worship times, and heard from amazing speakers about how they can do God’s work to make a difference in our world. Please pray for their safe return. If you have Facebook, I’m sure you can log in to see a picture or two or 500!
Sunscreen, Sunblock, SPF... What is the difference? By Jenny Allert So often these words are used interchangeably but there are very distinct differences. The type of skin protection we choose for ourselves is especially important if you have sensitive skin issues, knowing the difference can help you make the best decision depending on your skin and the situation. The major difference is sunblock reflects the UV rays, is usually much thicker when applied (I always think of the lifeguards with the white nose from using sunblock), sunscreen include ingredients that absorb the UV rays before they reach the skin. One skin consideration if you choose to use Sunblock and are acne prone, it will block the pours and could increase acne issues, at the same time those with sensitive skin are more likely to react to the ingredients in sunscreen. Sunscreen for sensitive skin often offers a combination of sunscreen and sunblock. So let’s talk about this SPF number, what does it really mean and am I more protected? First lets acknowledge 2 types of rays to be protected from UV reaches the earth in two forms UVB and UVA rays. UVB plays a significant role in skin cancer and the type of ray that SPF targets. If sunscreen is applied correctly (and it is often not applied in correct quantities, and thus only offers 1/3 of the coverage), SPF 15 blocks 93% of the rays, SPF 30 97%, and SPF 50 98%. SO here is where is gets tricky. UVB plays a significant role in growth of skin cancer but it is known that UVA may actually start the skin caner and can develop with no redness or sunburns. The higher SPF (over 50) often have decreased UVA protection in order to increase the UVB protection. For this reason most specialist encourage SPF between 30-50 for good UVB protection AND contain some combination of the following UVA protections ingredients: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, avobenzone, ecamsule, and oxybenzone in order to have optimum protection. These sunscreens are often labeled multi or broad-spectrum protection. Sunscreen is important to protect you from the suns damage, but so is seeking shade, and using protective clothing (like hats) whenever possible! Sunscreen is often something we need especially when we are around water. This time of year, water safety is also very important. Here are some general water safety tips to help make those summer days splashing a little less stressful. Teach kids how to swim early, help them become strong swimmers. There are also adult swimming classes, so if you have never learned to swim it is not too late. Swim only in designated swimming areas. Learn CPR, by knowing what to do in an emergency you could save a life. Make sure your life jackets are US Coastguard approved. Swim with a buddy, and never leave children unattended around water. Establish rules for you family and stick to them without fail. Last, avoid alcohol while swimming. (Information obtained from the Skin Cancer Foundation)

Pastor Gail is attending the Executive Skills for Pastors at California Lutheran School of Management, in Thousand Oaks, CA, the week of July 16-19. Lutheran pastors are strongly encouraged to seek out opportunities for continuing education to enhance skills, spirituality and experiences that will benefit both the church and the pastor. Please keep Pastor Gail in prayer during this time of learning!
My Gift, Their Gift, God’s Gift for the Church – A Pastoral Stewardship Message “Pastor Eric, I know that a few people have been struggling with some of what God is doing here… It is hard to say goodbye to some people. I miss them, but I also know that God will bless them wherever they go with Him. So help me try to see how I can continue to support what God wants to do in His church, and how I can help give (and do) more while others are hurting and healing!” Well, that plea – asked of me a couple of weeks ago in early June – pretty much gets right to the point for us as disciples here at CLC, doesn’t it? And though I listened and talked with that particular sister in Christ, I also thanked her for her permission to share some of that conversation here with you. King David, from a great passage in 1 Chronicles 29:14, took a collection for the house of God that Solomon his son was going to build, and the most revealing thing about God’s sovereignty in regards to our offerings and giving, is that God already owns everything, and our very act of giving is itself a gift of God. So here is what David says, “Who am I? [And he is praying now to God.] Who am I and what is my people that we should be able, thus, to offer willingly?” In other words: “Our offering willingly is a gift we don’t deserve. You have given that to us. For all things come from you and of your own have we given you.” David continues in verse 16, “O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own.” Every gift we are giving right now you are giving to us to give to you. “I have seen your people offering freely and joyously to you” (v. 17). And here is the rock solid, foundational, ultimate statement about God’s sovereignty in giving: “Oh Lord, keep forever such purposes and thoughts in the hearts of your people and direct their hearts toward you” (v. 18). In other words, not only are all of our gifts a gift from God, but even our purposes and our thoughts and our intentions to give, are a work of God. So what does all of that mean in relationship with the desire to give (and do) more, that our sister in Christ first raised?
Hmm…? Fact: God is truly doing marvelous and wondrous things in our midst. But marvel and wonder – by their very nature – are not feelings of assured certainty. As such, God’s work most surely requires no small measure of trust, yet trust only grows in nurtured relationship. The Lord fully recognizes our desire to ask questions when our heart yearns to see what He is doing a bit clearer. Actually, I firmly believe He expects those questions to be lifted. But I also know that God continues to lead further on, assuring us in His own way, so that we see for ourselves (with Him) the answer to those questions. On August 1st, I will be celebrating the second anniversary of God’s calling of me to come and serve as your Lead Pastor. These past two years have had the occasional moment for any one of us to seek out a hand-raising moment for God’s clarification. Yet, in God’s patience for us all through His own guiding faithful presence, we see an abundance of moments where the Lord has blessed His church with renewal, stronger leadership, and the necessary preparation for the discoveries of even greater blessings in the steps ahead. That is the pivotal realization and at the heart of our sister’s willingness to ask the question “how can I help give (and do) more?” So, I invite you this month (and truly the months ahead) to echo the prayers of King David with me: “Oh Lord, keep forever such purposes and thoughts in the hearts of your people, and direct my heart towards you.” Search your own hearts in prayer where God may be leading you to discover delight in giving. And, may you also (re-)hear these words of truths: God is good, and will continue to provide; we have the genuine great opportunity to continue to be a beloved part of that blessing that He will achieve in our midst as Christ Lutheran; all of our offerings of time, talent and treasure are blessed by God and dedicated to His purpose for the world through this ministry we share; we are on the right path to discovering even greater blessings for – and through – this congregation; and we are loved as God’s holy church. As our Lord Jesus loved to tell his disciples, and most certainly still loves to say to us, “Come and see!”

Emily and Aidan Carroll (son of Susan and Bill Carroll) are relocating to Anchorage, Alaska. Emily and Aidan met at Northeastern University in Boston, MA at Ministry of the Fenway. They married 7/09/16. Emily graduated with a Masters in Divinity from Chandler (Emory) this May and has been assigned to St. John United Methodist in Anchorage as an associate pastor starting July 1.
2018-2019 Council Leadership At the June Council meeting, per the congregation’s constitution and governing by-laws, the officers and ministry liaisons were elected into leadership of Christ Lutheran Church. The members of Council and their ministries are listed below. I encourage the entire church to reach out to them in partnership with the joy of: (re-)establishing an introduction; stewarding the vision of the year(s) ahead; identifying areas of support; and recognizing helpful areas of ministry participation. Additionally, remember that Council liaisons are not (necessarily) in roles “hands-on” participation for each ministry setting. They are absolutely partners in supporting roles that improve the ministry, encourage the staff’s gifts for service, and communicate to/from Council leadership updates and visions for the sake of the congregation. Please let either President Brian Martin or Pastor Eric know if you have additional questions.

SOFIA
(Stories Of Faith In Action)
As I’m sitting off the deck of Schram (best cabin at camp) at Sky Ranch, I see many different faiths being put into action. Let me paint you a picture of what Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp is all about. Close your eyes, imagine a place with no cell phones, no connection to the outside world and crazy unwashed counselors running amuck. The most important part, though, is all of the campers that call camp home for a week. They are running around camp singing songs, making friends and spreading their faith all over the place. All age groups have and will learn about the abundance of God’s Love.
That fits with this column so well. We have an abundance of love at CLC. We have so many people stepping up and finding where their faith is leading them - into the sound booth, on the IT team helping me learn all of the bits and pieces that has to do with the projection you see every weekend, creating our new logo. Thank you to all of the people that are willing to jump in both feet. One massive thank you and SOFIA that I need to talk about is Janice Korte. She does so much behind the scenes. She helps the counters with money totaling, she puts the weekly giving into your statements, and I can’t forget the sweets that she brings. At the end of June, Janice will move on to other pursuits within the church. We are really going to miss Janice at her post in the office with her lovely smile, attitude and genuine kindness. Thank you, Janice, for all that you do for CLC!

WIND AND SPIRIT IN JULY!
This is a unique monthly fellowship and bible study opportunity for motorcycle and any “open air” vehicle owners like convertibles, targa-tops, Jeeps, etc. Our next event (weather permitting) is Saturday, July 14thth beginning at 10:00am in the church parking lot. We will begin with a time of introductions followed by a brief devotional, and then a planned scenic enjoyable cruise together through some of God’s beautiful creation around the local areas of the range until stopping for lunch together. Cost will be your fuel and your food, and friends are certainly welcome to join in. However, to make necessary arrangements, please respect a deadline to sign-up with Pastor Eric at pastorallert@clchr.org by the end of Wednesday July 11th.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT ADULT STUDY
Pastor Eric’s weekly adult study is a powerful look at the book of Acts. This series, entitled “Acts: The Holy Spirit’s Partnership with Theophilus” journeys through the new connection God establishes with the world through the birth of the Christian Church, and where the Theophilus in you finds your place in God’s vision. Classes begin at 7:05pm in the SonRise Room, with an informal review of the video series “A.D.: The Bible Continues” beginning at 6:30pm. All are welcome!
