Dear Friends, One of the common anxieties in the church during pastoral interim periods centers around questions such as these: “When will we get moving? How long will the call process take?” When I interviewed with Christ Lutheran’s church council, I sought to assure them that I am not invested in trying to stretch out the interim process, but I also want it to be done well. Part of my call here is to be a coach and consultative presence during the transition. As we enter into these early summer days, I am happy to report that the council has appointed a twelve-person Transition Team, which will have its initial meeting during the first week in June. They will be authorized to lead the congregation in a process of self-discovery and looking to the future in the congregation’s 30th anniversary year. The Transition Team will be commissioned at worship on the weekend of June 13-14. One of the tasks of the Transition Team is to work on and largely complete the Ministry Site Profile (MSP), the document used in the ELCA to share with pastoral candidates. Then, before the call committee begins interviewing, the MSP will be shared with that group, having been reviewed and approved by the church council (and submitted to the Rocky Mountain Synod). The members of the Transition Team are Jeff Bergstrom, Chris DeBeer, Carl Douhan, Bill Doyle, Heidi Jason, Elizabeth Jones, Martha Miller, David Ornes, Chris Porter, Steve Schaeberle, Jennifer Sievers, and Nancy Sullivan. Please pray for them and their work, and thank them for their willingness to engage the congregation in its self-assessment during these days. By the way, the gathering of perspectives, information, questions, and visions for mission from the congregation has already begun. At the May 9 semi-annual meeting of Christ Lutheran Church, we collected responses to a series of questions from twenty-seven church members, and these comments added up to six pages of input for the Transition Team to review. Please be in touch with me at any time as you have questions or concerns to share. God’s peace to you, Steve Berke, Intentional Interim Pastor

Pastor DJ’s Message

Confirmation I’ve got one more angel question to answer, but I’m going to save it for another month. Instead I’m going back to the list of questions to answer this one which is timely: Why don’t confirmation kids memorize scripture or catechism? The reason this is timely is that in the month of May, 33 of our young adults and 2 of our brothers and sisters in Idaho Springs were approved for confirmation by pastors, council, mentors, and guides. It was another successful year working with everyone and a great blessing to see them blossom from start to finish of a very intensive time of instruction (what catechesis translates to in English) in the faith. The question does have a bit of an inaccuracy at its start. Our confirmands do memorize scripture, but they do not do so in the same manner as was done in previous generations. In years past, there was a requirement of recitation prior to or during the rite of confirmation. I recall specifically having to recite the Apostle’s Creed from memory in front of the congregation – and not fondly. I can’t say that this was in any way a formative experience in my faith life nor in my study of theology. Nonetheless, there are those who do recall these moments fondly as they have formed the foundation for their faith which has grown since then. Regardless, our confirmands are inundated with a year of study of Holy Scripture with the idea that those verses and stories which are memorable to them will become part of their faith. We also do significant education on our liturgy (which many have memorized) which is very scriptural. Much like education has changed over the years, so too has our plan for confirmation, which leads directly to my next point. Those of you with working memory of your Small Catechism will recall that it wasn’t enough to memorize your Apostle’s Creed, but to attach to it as well Martin Luther’s meaning of each of the articles. This was actually not part of my confirmation process, and I feel the lesser for it. Information is not lacking in our current age, and the issue really becomes how do we prioritize and make meaning out of an absolute flood of information. Our goal in confirmation now is not recitation but making meaning out of a complex and diverse Christian tradition. We have good precedence for this in the church, even as scripture itself was formed. As the councils convened to discuss what would and wouldn’t be included in the bible, they had to make this discernment. As they discussed Christology, Epistemology, Ecclesiology, all the intricacies of looking at the text (after a rough agreement on which text was met) and asking “What does this mean?” they had to wade through a variety of perspectives and verses and stories and create priority and lenses for viewing the faith. We focus, then, on meaning and application in our current model. In this light, it is a distinct possibility that we do adult catechism as a course, but that will be organized sometime in the future. Peace, Pastor DJ Dent
