A Lenten Message from Pastor Eric J. Allert “There are gifts in the Dark Wood to be found if we embrace them... Uncertainty can help us let go of our fear of the unknown. Emptiness can leave room for new possibilities. Thunderstruck moments can offer insight. Getting lost invites us to heighten our awareness. Temptation can help us know our true path. And reaching out to other ‘misfits’ on the journey enriches our experience of life and love. And through it all, God is with us.” – Eric Elnes There are times in our lives when we struggle to find our place in the world and to live in a way that we feel most alive. Sometimes we even lose our way because of uncertainty, disappointment, discouragement, loss, loneliness, or failure. But author Eric Elnes suggests that our darkest times can also be a catalyst for a life lived more fully, observing that “Our moments of spiritual awakening present themselves not in the absence of struggles, but deep in the heart of them.” On Valentine’s Day, of all times, we began the season of Lent with a powerful and moving Ash Wednesday service. It was a reflective service, including the introspective ritual of the imposition of ashes on our foreheads as a sign of our mortality and the immortality of life in Jesus Christ. We needed it all the more, as we had only just heard of two separate dark wooded forests in our communities.

Jeff Bergstrom j-bergstrom@comcast.net

Yet, I have found that the best way through the pain of life’s struggles is with the comfort of God when we gather with those we love. And the season of Lent, as reflective as it is, isn’t devoid of joy – even when heartache and confusion are so prevalent. It may be a quiet, introspective period, with times of deep inward joy and also times of sorrow and grief, but these emotions travel hand in hand. It’s good to look at the relationships we have – with self, family, friends, community, and even with God – to see what can be given, and what can be received in order to more fully experience the new life of Easter.

Tom Coates tomcoates@comcast.net

Through it all, as Elnes so faithfully reminds us, God is with us.

SOFIA: Stories of Faith in Action Here at CLC, everywhere I look I see people putting their faith into action in so many ways. Here are a few examples: Seven members of the congregation being installed as the new Visitation Team, 13 families and 47 people total joining CLC as new members, people sponsoring children and teachers from Uganda, donations coming in for the Military Ministry, a new wall built over a mystery doorway, loads of food going to World Hunger relief on Souper Bowl Sunday, several faithful members joining the Parish Records Team to organize our books and files, as well as all the MANY ministries that meet day in and day out, week in and week out. Christ Lutheran Church is filled with compassionate, caring, involved members who give so much to the church, the community, and each other. I give thanks to the Lord every day for all that we are and all that we do! –Ally Williams, Connections Coordinator

Volunteer Opportunities While the 11:00 service might not be our most well-attended event, it is a great service with wonderful music and liturgy. However, we are sorely in need of scripture readers, assisting ministers, and worship team members for this important service. Please consider volunteering for one or more of these ministries to keep the 11:00 service running smoothly. We are still in need of a few more people to help with kitchen cleaning. It’s a lot to ask of 4 or 5 people to keep the kitchen sparkling clean week after week. If we had 3-4 people join this ministry that requires about two hours during the week in which you are in service, each person would need to serve only once every 7-8 weeks. Can you please consider volunteering 12-15 hours per year to a ministry that affects most everyone who enters our house of worship? Martin Luther once said, “Prayer is a strong wall and fortress of the church: it is a goodly Christian weapon.” We always welcome people to join our prayer ministry. Weekly, the prayer group receives an updated prayer log of people for whom they pray and ask for God’s help, intercession, and thanksgiving. If you would be interested in joining the prayer group, please let us know. Please contact Karen at volunteer@clchr.org or 303.791.0803, ext. 110 if you are interested in any of these opportunities, or any other ministry opportunity. Thanks!

What a Difficult Flu Season

By Jenny Allert

We are having one of the worst flu seasons since the swine flu and H1N1. These seasons are dreaded in the medical community, when a “new” strain of the flu shows up we can guarantee a difficult season. Until we have seen a new strain it can’t be included in the vaccine. Flu season goes well in to March and in colder areas sometimes if even lingers longer. With our late snow season, that means the flu sometimes hangs out longer here in Colorado! I thought this month it would be good to review some basic preventive measures. Your biggest defensive mechanism from getting sick and passing illness to others is, hand washing!! Yes hand washing is the “do it yourself” vaccine. It is important to follow the clear recommendations for hand washing. This includes wet hands, lathering with soap, and then scrubbing for at least 20-30 seconds. Sing your ABCs or the Happy Birthday Song to assure you have scrubbed long enough, rinse, then towel or air dry! What if I don’t have access to soap and water? In this case you should use a hand gel that has at least 60% alcohol concentration. It is a good idea to carry this with you. If someone in the family does get the flu, do your best to contain that person to one room in the house. Be sure to wash your hands before and after entering that room. Keeping the germs contained is important to prevent further spreading of the flu. Remember you are contagious for 5-6 days after you become sick, it is very important that you do not go out into public, return to work, or school. Just plan on staying home for at least a full week. The other best prevention is the prevention of spreading the germs by keeping them contained. It is always good to consult your Doctor about possible medications to help ease the flu symptoms or any other flu complications that could develop. As we get through the remainder of this flu season, lets all work hard to stay healthy. Remember if you are concerned, a fist bump or elbow bump is acceptable during the passing of the peace, or just get that hand gel out after shaking hands! Lets keep our CLC family healthy.

to our new staff Sam Sweitzer has joined the CLC staff as Office Coordinator! She has had office experience working in car dealerships as well as administrative experience in other fields, including as an Events and Functions manager in a wellness resort. That friendly voice you now hear when you call CLC is Sam, as she is in the office from 9-3 Monday – Friday. Her email address is office@clchr.org. Sam, her husband, Bob, and daughters, Lily and Lizzy, are joining CLC in the February class. We are delighted to have the Sweitzer family as part of CLC and Sam on board as Office Coordinator! Be sure and give her/them a warm welcome!

First Communion Classes will be March 4 and March 11 from 12:15-2:30. Lunch will be served. If your child are interested in receiving Holy Communion please let Gary know either via email (gknutson@clchr.org) or the response sheet in the bulletin. We ask that a parent attend class with their child. First Communion will take place on Thursday, March 29 during the Maundy Thursday service at 7:00pm.

An Invitation for Lenten Focus Upon Stewardship As we journey further into the season of Lent, your church leaders and I are busy planning how we will continue to honor this season, and strengthen formation opportunities for the church. As members of a liturgical tradition, we understand the importance of this season in the life of our congregation. Among the many opportunities this season provides for us, it also gives us an invitation to broaden the discussion of stewardship. Lent is traditionally a season of penitence and reflection. It is a time to turn away from the concerns of this world, and focus our lives on the joy of proclaiming the good news of the Gospel. In our world, which for some feels so upside down at the moment, this season calls us to turn away from sin and look again to the one true God. What specific invitations may be awaiting you as a disciple here at Christ Lutheran Church? Here are some ideas: 1) Create a Personal/Family Lenten Giving Program: This could take many forms. You could create a list of specific items and projects that need support around the church, and give toward those specific projects. You could identify needs in the mission projects that CLC partners with in our community, around the country, or internationally, and support them. The fundamental goal of such an effort is to encourage generosity as part of the Lenten practice. 2) As a Personal/Family Lenten project, create something to enhance our worship space: Several years back, Good Samaritan Church in Sammamish, Washington, created mosaic Stations of the Cross during Lent. Working with an artist who designed the basic forms, the congregation gathered in work parties to create the mosaics. The results were amazing, and led to a whole series of other projects to enhance their worship space. This is a great example of members of a congregation using their creativity and their hands to create something for God's work in the world. What gifts and talents has God blessed you with that could be further blessed in His glory for His church? Consider the invitation to talk with the pastoral team, office staff, or lay leaders of CLC to vision what a project with your specific blessing could achieve! 3) Consider a Personal/Family Environmental Stewardship Effort: Lent reminds us that the world currently is not the world as it should be. In our penitence, we are called to join with God in recreating the world. Taking on projects that bless and steward God’s beautiful work in creation at the church could be an example of small projects which can have a significant impact. During our Give-and-Take series this Lent, we once again are invited to walk closer with Jesus. We are asked to focus on God and the hope secured for us. This refocusing can be a very special call for you of stewardship: in our lives, in our church, and in our world. I pray that you will take advantage of the gift of Lent to help further the discussion of stewardship in this beloved community of faith.

BREW & BIBLE

Are you between the ages of 18-34? Do you like to drink craft beer? Do you like God? Then this is the group for you! We will meet twice a month at different places around town. We meet the second and last Thursday at 7pm. If you are interested please let me know you are coming at connections@clchr.org. (Nobody likes sitting at a table by themselves!) I will email you with the topic that we will discuss. Also, invite your friends. They don’t have to be Lutheran, in fact, I believe our conversations will be richer if we have other ideas to talk about. I can’t wait to create fellowship and meet new people and most importantly talk about our savior. See you then! Ally Williams, Connections Coordinator – email connections@clchr.org

RALLY IN THE PARK Many thanks to Michelle McClurg and Mike Williams for their decade of service on the CLC Personnel Team! In addition to time (years!) they have given their gifts of insight, wisdom, tenacity and faithfulness to God’s ministry at Christ Lutheran. May the Lord bless and keep you!

WE NEED CHAIRS The office staff has spent time over the last few months getting organized and rearranging furniture. While doing so, we have discovered that many of us are in need of new chairs for our visitors. If you have connections to such chairs, please contact Allyson at childrensministry@clchr.org. If you would like to donate money towards new chairs, we would welcome that too! Please write “office redo” on the memo line of your check! If you haven’t seen the office in a while, feel free to stop by! Its a work in progress but it is looking pretty good!

In every relationship, we understand that there is “give and take” in order for us to live harmoniously and be happy. When we feel that we aren’t balanced in our giving with what we are receiving, we become sad, angry, or frustrated. During these 46 days of Lent, we are focusing on what Give and Take might mean in the life of a Christ-follower, especially as we journey towards the cross. Join us for this important, even urgent, Lenten journey. February 17/18 & 21 – Relationship with Self February 24/25 & 28 – Relationship with Family March 3 / 4 & 7 – Relationship with Friends March 10/11 & 14 – Relationship with Community March 17/18 & 21 – Relationship with God

It’s Worship in the Park and Rally Day all rolled into one! We are looking to give our day in the park an updated look and we need your help! Do you love to organize, have ideas, like to be involved? Are you creative or handy? We could use your help! We need a crew to help us with games and activities and a crew to help us with food. If you are interested in either of these, please sign up on the response sheet and join us on March 11 at 11:00 for our first meeting. For more information, please talk to Allyson, Karen or Ally!

The Stephen Ministers are those care-givers who come alongside you – or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives – and provide comfort and support for as long after as needed. But being a Stephen Minister is much bigger and better than just helping other people. It also becomes a part of you – it changes you for the better. It creates an opportunity for faith to grow stronger. As a Stephen Minister, you will find God drawing you in closer and allowing you to be Christ’s presence to another person. To truly begin this ministry in a way that blesses the congregation in full, we are anticipating an expense of $15,000 to train 5 leaders in supporting more than a dozen ministers. The investment that the Holy Spirit is calling the congregation to make is significant, but so is the ministry potential. To find out more about Stephen Ministry, please talk with Pastor Eric. To make a financial gift in support of establishing this ministry here at Christ Lutheran, please designate your gift to Christ Lutheran Church and identify it assigned towards Stephen Ministry. Your Pastoral Team, the Church Council, and truly God’s Spirit is placing this powerful ministry before you as an appeal for your additional support. Meet Ms. Val who is the CLC nursery attendant for all four services (and special events!). She loves to play with the children and considers the nursery an important part of God’s ministry. Of course, children are always welcome in the worship services, but do know that there is a safe, welcoming and fun place for your small children. Questions? Contact Karen or Ally; volunteer@clchr.org or connections@clchr.org.

Grief is a difficult but necessary part in recovering from loss. Loss of a loved one to death; loss of someone special due to a move, a broken relationship or other causes; Loss of a dream, a plan, a vision; Loss of a job; We experience heartache and emotions from many different sources but don’t always know how to name these emotions. Sometimes grief reveals itself in anger, sadness, depression, and/or bewilderment. CLC has made available this book, “Good Grief” to help people name the grief and perhaps find tools to get through the difficult times. Contact the church office for your copy or pick one up in the narthex.

Through baptism, we welcome Macy Olivia Mielke into the Lord’s Family! Macy was baptized at the 9:30am service on February 18th. Support Macy by praying for her in her new life in Christ and for her family & sponsors.
