Harrington Carnival 2017 What a day! The weather held out and it was sunny and beautiful. Approximately 120 students and their families came out to celebrate spring and to just have some fun. This year in lieu of a jump castle, we added an electric basketball game and two more carnival games. The youth from CLC worked all the games while the adults worked in the cafeteria where hot dogs, brats, chips, tangerines and beverages were served. Thanks to the generosity of CLC, the Harrington kids walked about with full tummies and lots of prizes! A reminder that Harrington Elementary is a north Denver school where 98% are on free or reduced lunch program. It’s a wonderful experience to bring joy to those who can afford so little. Thank you to all who donated and who participated in the event. This is just one of many reasons CLC is so incredibly special. Dianne Yoss, Outreach Coordinator
FIRST IMPRESSIONS CLC Landscape Adoption The First Impressions Team is a group of individuals and families in the congregation, who adopt a plot or more to help beautify Christ Lutheran Church’s landscape. Duties include planting, weeding, watering and flower care. This ministry is important to CLC, because it really does leave a “first impression” with our visitors. There is a diagram of all the plots that you can adopt, as well as a sign-up sheet located in the Narthex. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Dianne Yoss at outreach@clchr.org or (303) 791-0803 X110.

From Pastor Allert The weekend of April 1st/2nd, during our “Journey to Who We Are” and “The Never-ending (Re)formation of the Church” series, with many parallel references to the Holy Church as a tree, I gave a sermon at each of the 4 worship services about where I see the Holy Spirit guiding us Christ’s church together. In the 4 weeks that followed throughout the month of April, I continued to receive countless affirming statements from parishioners that are reenergized and eager for the vision that was shared in worship. I also received several more requests to share again that vision from members and visitors alike that were not able to attend worship that weekend and missed out. (Recorded sermons from each week can be found here: http://www.clchr-ftp.org/tag/sermons/) In this month’s issue of our church newsletter, I have provided below each of the vision statements I made in my sermons that weekend. I give God thanks both for the visions themselves, and for this beautiful church that now seeks with renewed commitment the strength and delight of discovering these steps ahead, and so much more! - … from this point of view, even though we just welcomed 34 new members, I still see fewer backs of empty chairs, but instead even more disciples gathered in this holy house; eager to call this church their home, and you and me as their family. - I see at least one open and inviting bible study of one type or another on every single day; bridging the Monday connection of God’s word to provide strength beyond the Sabbath. - I see chapel time not just for our strong and thriving preschool children, but also weekly offered to their parents before they head off to their busy days, further empowered in God’s word. - I see not just church softball teams, but volleyball, basketball, and bowling too because we value the opportunity to have Christian fellowship in a world where a true sense of community is becoming increasingly endangered. - I see a thriving Stephen’s Ministry emerging because disciples in our midst recognize their own gifts and talents to care for a trembling leaf and quaking soul in our midst. - I see a specifically designed children’s ministry, a junior high ministry, a senior high ministry, and a young adult ministry, all linked together by a shared understanding that our youth don’t grow in faith alone a single grade at a time, but rather in a web of relational ministry and intergenerational family love. - I see all around us family-run shops and local businesses of all sizes discovering that we are praying for them, not simply for their success, but that they also hear what Martin Luther called their divine vocation and calling – trusting that God is at work through their careers providing daily opportunities for His blessings. - I see the called and elected leaders of our Councils, along with the members of every committee, ministry team, task force, and support group all free to share the time they are generously willing to give in sacrifice, now devoted to God’s glorious visions because they are wrapped in the prayers and trust of the congregation, rather than fear of lingering criticisms and sinful gossiping selfish critique.
Pastor Allert
(Continued)
- I see our church bus on the streets Saturday nights and Sunday mornings rather than in our parking lot, because there are disciples in the Ranch that simply need a ride to church. - I see adults in the church engaging fully in the mission work waiting for us around the world, not just in Uganda, but also in the darkest corners of the world where little boys and girls no older than our confirmands face horrors of true evil that no child of God should ever know. - I see 60,000+ more people entering into Sterling Ranch and Roxborough, and I see a call that we as a church have: to make sure that not only are they welcome here, but this community of faith – this family of God – this church is worth the drive any hour of the day or night. - I see our retiring adults and seniors entering chapters in their lives where they are still eager to grow with one another, eager to form new friendships, eager to be led along new journeys through God’s beautiful creation all around us as they learn again how precious time truly spent well is joyful to their souls. - I see our staff surrounded by squads of volunteers, eager to put their own faith into action – freeing every church employee up to research and discover new potential opportunities: for each one of us to serve as Christ’s hands, feet, heart and voice. - I see a renewed hope to further support both the Rocky Mountain Synod and the ELCA with our gifts, not because of some daunting expectation, but because the truth still exists that we are church better when we are church together, and when our relationship with the broader church is mutually genuine, we can truly accomplish great feats of Christian discipleship together both locally and globally. - I see worship flowing with the desire of both members and visitors alike, because their hearts long for a word of hope that shines through the dark noise that would otherwise seek to consume their lives day after day after day, and they want to offer their gifts and their heart to God here in worship. - I see both the active military men and women, and veterans, along with their families, knowing that we love them, have not forgot about them, and regularly reach out to them seeking to serve alongside with them in whichever way we can that brings God’s hope for compassion, justice, forgiveness and community. - I see those among us who are on their beds, about to meet their redeemer and Lord, ready to do so because they are not going to do it alone, but rather with a fellow member of God’s family close at their side, holding their hand, sharing the eternal good news that “It’s Ok. Christ is there to welcome you home to the Father’s rest.” All this, and more, I see. I see it for us as Christ Lutheran Church. I see it, clear as I see each one of your beautiful beloved faces. I see it all, and I see us as one, following God into this glorious vision, guiding each and every one of us. And the world will see it as our love… You too are on this journey of discovery, the journey to who we all are as one. Where are you in this never-ending re-forming of the Church? What is it that you see? What is it that you are ready to discover, and share with the rest of us? Pastor Eric J. Allert

Wind & Spirit
“Wind and Spirit” On the Journey Together!
Have you heard of the new and exciting ministry here at Christ Lutheran Church known as Wind and Spirit? This is a unique monthly fellowship and bible study opportunity for motorcycle riders and convertible/Targa-top vehicle owners. Weather-permitting, we enjoy a special fellowship time together that begins with introductions, then a evotional/brief bible study, and finally a planned scenic enjoyable cruise together through some of God’s beautiful creation around the local areas of the range (often stopping for a light meal together). Cost will be your fuel and your food, and friends are certainly welcome to join in. Stay tuned for updates about this ministry, or contact Pastor Eric at pastorallert@clchr.org to find out more! The leadership of the church has been working with God in beginning the process now to search for an Executive Pastor. That process began with an invitation to the congregation to prayerfully consider offering one’s time, talent, energy, passion and heart for potential service on the 2017 Executive Pastor Call Committee. Throughout the entire month of March and early April, the church-elected Nominating Committee received 40 names of members from within the congregation that possibly could/would be interested in being considered. After contacting each of these persons, 19 affirmed that they would indeed be willing to be considered by the Council for appointment to the Call Committee. On April 11th, the Council received the slate of 19 candidates from the Nominating Committee and, led prayerfully in God’s Spirit, discerned together this appointment process. In the Council’s deliberation, each of the 19 candidates were prayed over, reviewed, and intentionally discussed with the expressed note that only positive and affirming statements would be shared. Criteria for important demographics such as worship service representation, age, gender, length of membership, involvement in the life of the congregation, availability to commit to the needs of the search process, experience pertaining to the Executive Pastor’s job description, and several more criteria were considered at length. It became very clear, early on in our discussions, that Christ Lutheran remains
abundantly blessed with an abundance of qualified leaders, and that no candidate would be a negative choice. Once the lengthy but purposeful deliberation was complete, the final slate was unanimously approved by Council. The 2017 Executive Pastor Call Committee includes Norm Buelke, Kristen DeBeer, Jordan Green, Deanna Johnson, Lara Marxhausen, Kyle Millyard, Ron Moses, Margie Versen and Pastor Allert. As the Call Committee now begins to gather, I ask the entire congregation for your prayers and continued support for each committee member. The time, energy, and effort that they lift in sacrifice on behalf of the whole congregation – given to the will of God – is truly a beautiful and holy blessing that the entire church is benefited to receive. In the weeks ahead, the Call Committee will be gathering for our first meeting to make (re-)introductions, become oriented and organized, and move ahead with purposeful vision along the process. This committee will be prayerfully thorough, diligent and prompt in working with the Lord to discover who He is currently preparing to be our next Executive Pastor. And, of course, the Call Committee will be certain to communicate with the congregation, as best as possible, the appropriate news and encouraging updates as God reveals them! We look forward to you now sharing our anticipation, hope and excitement for all that the Lord is preparing for us, and accomplishing through us, in our journey ahead together.

Did you know? (Youth Ministry) I am grateful for the opportunity, after almost 15 years of serving Christ Lutheran Church, to report some special things to our congregation. December 1, 2002 was a special day for me as I started my call to CLC without any background in Youth Ministry but with a passion for youth, as I went on retreats with our youth and taught Sunday School with our high schoolers. Our church went through many changes and challenges during 2003 to 2005, but Christ was there leading the way in our mess and our resolve to become a better congregationand to be more faithful doing Christ's work. Pastor Tom Shelly came in and started the healing process as we muddled through some deep valleys and high mountaintops, and the Youth Ministry continued as I started to grow into my position. Boy, there was a lot to learn and pray about! The youth at CLC were eager to learn and become more faithful in the journey with Christ. They were starving for that relationship that I was talking about, the one with one another and with Christ. The Confirmation ministry has confirmed over 500 youth in my years here -- 507 to be exact. Our Senior High youthstarted leading worship services twice a year in 2004. The Senior High youth have been on over 30 mission trips, including Harvest Farm every year and part of several Lutheran Disaster Relief missions: Hurricane Katrina; Joplin, MO tornado; Tennessee floods; Moore, OK tornado; and San Marcos, TX flood. CLC purchased a bus in 2008 so that we didn't have to rent vehicles for our mission trips and holidays. We, as a congregation, have saved over $117,000 in those years because of a congregation that values youth and the mission trips we do. Our church "super mechanic" Cliff Stark continues to do the bus maintenance that he promised to do. Thank you, Cliff! The youth ministry here at CLC has been blessed by an abundant amount of support from our congregation in knowing two things: (1) That youth are our right now and should be included in the life of our congregation; and (2) That because we have this mindset that our youth will lead the Lutheran church in the future, our retention rate of keeping youth active after Confirmation is 78.6% in the last 15 years. Our youth can earn approximately 400 hours of community service just by being part of youth group during their high school years. Many have maxed and surpassed this threshold staying active. I, in the coming months, will communicate facts of the dynamic youth ministry we have here at CLC so stay tuned for some mind-blowing things I bet you didn't know. God’s Peace! Gary Knutson

Thank you for all of your support of the Preschool this year! Our Spring auction and art show went very well, raising over $2,000 for scholarships and school community needs. May will feel more like the Spring we have been waiting for. Our ladybugs are growing and our caterpillars are waiting to become beautiful butterflies. Just like all of our children in the school!
News from the Preschool
We are entering our last month at the preschool and have to say that the year went very fast. We will be busy making Mother’s Day gifts and practicing for our end of the year programs and graduation. We also have our all school picnic on the last day of school. It has been a blessed year for the preschool thanks to our families and friends. Remember, if you know of any 2 ½ - 6 year olds in need of a preschool home, consider sending them our way. We will also host nine weeks of camp sessions this summer.
We all get a little sad to see our butterflies fly away, but we know we helped them learn and grow and they will come back to visit. And, we look forward to a new bunch of caterpillars. Many blessings to everyone! Deb and Blair
