Lutheran Family Services Cultural Thanksgiving Bags

Yes, it’s that time of year. CLC has committed to filling 60 cultural Thanksgiving bags. This year we must also supply grocery totes to help LFS reduce costs. Many of our refugee clients from African and South East Asian countries are unfamiliar with a “traditional” American Thanksgiving meal. However, they would appreciate the opportunity to have a celebratory meal.

Here are some alternative groceries: • Rice: Jasmine or Basmati • Dried Beans: Kidney or Black • Corn meal • Green or black tea bags • Oil : Olive, canola or vegetable (in a plastic bottle) • Salt • Sugar (gallon size bag) • Flour (gallon size bag) • $20 gift card for H-Mart, Walmart, or King Soopers (for meat and fresh items) • Optional item: Rice Cookers (rice cookers are in high demand as many of the refugees use them on a regular basis)

Help reduce costs by donating a grocery tote! Please bring full or partial donations to the office no later than November 15.

Thank you!

Pastor Steve’s Message

Dear Friends: With so many warm days this fall, it seemed for a while that summer would never end. But the month of October itself has flown by, don’t you think? Perhaps the month has gone quickly because it has been “bookended” by special events on the weekends: on October 3-4, the 30th anniversary celebration; the Halloween party and Reformation worship on October 24-25; and the All Saints’ worship services on October 31-November 1. It was exciting to see so many people gather on those occasions. As I am writing today, I am also anticipating a rather unique event that is happening in our local area from October 23-29. A group of clergy from the Badische Landeskirche, Germany, is spending a few days in the Denver area on an ecumenical exchange. (Several clergy from these parts had visited in Germany approximately two years ago.) On Wednesday, October 28, I will go to Dillon (Lord of the Mountains Lutheran Church) and be the cantor for the “premiere” of a jazz Communion liturgy created by Pastor Paul Carlson of Denver. I got to know Paul through my intentional interim training, and it is a privilege to work with him on this liturgy. Looking ahead to November, we know that one of the developmental tasks of a congregation in transition is to foster renewed relationships with its denomination and synod. We will certainly be doing that in early November: 1) Sunday afternoon, November 1, is the annual “missional gathering” with our local South Metro conference and Bishop Jim Gonia (at Christ the King Lutheran Church in southwest Denver); 2) Pastor Sarah Moening from the bishop’s staff will be with us to bring the message in worship on November 7-8; and 3) on Saturday evening, November 14, will be our fall semi-annual meeting, at which there will be much information about the next steps in moving toward calling pastors in conjunction with our synod’s process. On that night we will have a presentation of key findings from the Transition Team and church council. Please plan to come and be part of the learning and discussion! And then, as the days of November grow shorter, the church’s festival season arrives! Thanksgiving evening services will be on Tuesday, November 24, and then Advent begins on the weekend of November 28-29. God’s peace to you in these autumn days, Interim Pastor Steve Berke

HOLIDAY HEADS UP!

Adopt a family from Harrington Elementary! It’s hard to believe that in just over a month, we will be delivering Christmas gifts and baskets of food to Harrington Elementary School. There will be a tree in the Narthex starting November 14th with the names of families and gifts that they wish to have. Please pick a family and then make a note on the list below the tree if you will be doing food, gifts, or both food/gifts. Please bring all completed baskets to CLC by Thursday, December 3rd, and place them in the Fellowship Hall. If you would like the church to buy the food and gift card, please place a check marked “Christmas Basket” and the family number in the offering plate to pay for the Christmas dinner. You will be responsible for purchasing at least one of the gifts listed for each member of the family. We will be putting the CLC purchased food baskets together on Thursday, December 3rd at 10:00 am. If you are interested in putting the food baskets together or delivering the Christmas baskets on Saturday morning, please contact Dianne Yoss at outreach@clchr.org. We will be leaving CLC on Saturday, December 5th at 9:00AM to deliver the baskets to Harrington. Families are welcomed and encouraged.

Pastor DJ’s Message Revisiting All Saints Day Matthew 10: 19: But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say. I have a new explanation for the significance for All Saints’ Day. It was not developed out of hours of study or preparation for a sermon but based on an impromptu conversation with the high school youth of our congregation. I was asked with little time for research to present the concepts of All Saints’ Day and Reformation Day and their significance to the life of the church. While citing a little bit of the historical context, I talked about the development and liturgical practices surrounding those days. However, when it came time to speak of All Saints’ Day I had to already start on a foot of humility as I found out only this year how the holiday developed over even the last several decades. This knowledge seemed rather important, so I passed it along as part of my lecture. Then I was moved by something that popped into my mind. This happens sometimes while preaching, or even in conversation around the community. A movement of the Spirit, it is commonly called in other traditions, is not often openly attested to in the Lutheran tradition. However, these words and thoughts came forth in a much more profound way than I had ever considered them. I thought them so important that I would relay them to the congregation as a whole rather than those who were in attendance that evening. At the end of a funeral, in our tradition, one of the last things we do is commend the body or the remains to God. Sometimes, we use the phrase “we commit these remains to the ground, ashes to ashes, dust to dust,” which may ring a bell for you. Following that, we immediately state that we commend our brother or sister to the Lord. Essentially at the close of life, we admit that we have done all that we can and now entrust God to make good on the promises made through Jesus. All Saints’ Day is our way of doing this as a community. We offer the names and memory of those who over the course of the last year have died. We then call on God to complete the promises and to be good on the word to care for us in life and in death. We have done all that we can to care for those who were aging, ill, or tragically and mortally wounded and now we state we can do more and they are God’s just as they have always been. I am thankful for this new perspective and will be considering it for All Saints’ Days in the future, and maybe it’ll be in your minds and hearts as well. Peace, Pastor DJ

“Faithful Stewards of God’s Infinite Grace”

“Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received” (1 Peter 4:10) In our October article as part of this year’s stewardship emphasis, we saw that God is the owner of everything and that we are managers and stewards of what God has given us. We considered how each of us has been given gifts of time and talents as blessings of God’s grace. We also learned about the importance of using these gifts for God’s glory, for the good of others, and for the ministry here at Christ Lutheran Church. In addition to time and talents, God has also given us financial resources. For most of us, this means working to secure monetary gain. But make no mistake about it: According to Deuteronomy chapter 8, God gives us the ability to earn money. According to King Solomon, even work itself it a gift from God (Eccl. 5:19) In fact, everything we have — even the air we breathe in order to be able to work — is a gift that has been temporarily loaned to us by God. The truth of the temporary status of our financial resources was brought home to a pastor who needed a dark suit to conduct a funeral. He had very little money, so he went to a local pawn shop where he found a like-new suit in just the right size at a very inexpensive price. As he paid for the suit, he asked the clerk how the pawn shop could afford to sell the suit at such a low price. The clerk smiled and admitted that all their suits had once been owned by a local mortuary that had gone out of business. The minister felt a little strange wearing a suit that had once been part of a funeral home’s inventory, but he quickly set aside his apprehension since the price was so low and since no one would know. Everything was fine until in the middle of the funeral service, he casually started to put his hand into the pocket of the pants — only to discover there were no pockets! What an object lesson he received that day as he preached about the importance of living in the light of eternity while wearing a pair of pants without pockets! All of us know the old saying, “You can’t take it with you.” That’s why whatever we are going to do with the financial resources God has entrusted to us has to be done in this life. In fact, whatever we intend to do for the Lord with our money, we need to be doing now. Or as one person observed, “Do your giving while you’re living so you’ll be knowing where it’s going!”

How we use the money which God has given to us is an indicator of our priorities. Our checkbook will reveal clearly the things that are really important to us. How we spend our money is, in fact, a barometer of our spiritual temperature and of our personal faith. You see, it doesn’t take a lot of faith to make a rational, logical decision concerning our giving. As we review expenses and anticipated income, we can easily find the balance and base our commitment on the numbers alone. But exercising faith, looking to God as our Source to provide above and beyond what we might reasonably be expected to give, well — that’s another story. Jerry Bridges, Vice President of the Navigators, provided this spiritual principle: When God burdens your heart about something, and you confirm God’s leading based on the Scriptures, you can obey, being fully confident that God will provide a blessing, even when circumstances appear contrary.

When it comes to giving, that goes right along with what King Solomon described in Proverbs 11:24-25, Some give freely, yet grow all the richer; others withhold what is due, and only suffer want. A generous person will be enriched, and one who gives water will get water.

Remember, giving is not to help “poor God” pay the bills. Giving is not because God needs anything from us. Giving is God’s way of growing Christians. Every time we give for God’s glory from hearts that have been redeemed by God’s love and grace, we give away a little of our selfishness. Every time we give of our resources that have been loaned to us by God, we grow in grace and in our walk with Christ. As you consider your life during this time of stewardship emphasis, will you — like the Macedonian Christians — begin by first giving yourself to the Lord? Will you then be one of the “Faithful Stewards of God’s Infinite Grace” who will step out by faith by giving your time, your talents and your treasure to the Lord?

30th Anniversary Commemorative Leaf We are VERY CLOSE to reaching our goal of $2000 needed to place an Oak Leaf on the Tree of Life. Please consider donating $10, $20, $30... or more towards this special congregational gift.

Thanks to all who have already contributed!

Hello from the preschool and happy Fall! Our children are busy learning, playing and having fun at school. We are so blessed to have such nurturing teachers who love unconditionally and supportive parents who have wonderful ideas to share. We are thankful for our school and church family! If anyone has ordered Butterbraids, they will be delivered on Tuesday, November 2nd for church members. We will put them in the kitchen freezer and label the order with your name. Please pick them up sometime during the week or by the next Sunday. Thank you for your support! Our goal is to purchase some new learning toys for the students. Parent/Teacher conferences will be hosted this month as well. Our children will also be learning about, “Jesus feeds the 5000”, music time with Ms. Linda, reading with our new senior friends and also sharing a Thanksgiving feast with friends and family here at the school. If you would like to give some of your time to the preschool, please give us a call at 303-471-9290 or email Deb at dmorgans@clchr.org. We would love to share your talents and gifts with the children. We leave you with a favorite bible verse: Matthew 18:4-5 “Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.” “And, whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me.” Blessings to you and your family, Ms. Deb and Ms. Blair

Advent/Christmas Decorating

We will be decorating the church for Advent/Christmas on Monday, November 30th at 10:00 AM. We will be hanging garland and wreaths in the Fellowship Hall, Narthex, and Sanctuary, as well as putting up and decorating the Christmas Trees. Please save the date... there will be more information to follow in the mid-November bulletins.

Poinsettias

CLC will once again be giving you the opportunity to purchase poinsettias for the altar on Christmas Eve, in honor or memory of a very special person. They will be the same price as last year, $16. There will be more information to follow in the mid-November bulletins.
