Pastor Allert’s Message
Fellow beloved family, friends and saints of Christ Lutheran Church, We will be celebrating our Consecration Weekend together as God’s church on Saturday November 19th, and Sunday November 20th. As faithful community together, it remains an important joy that we share with one another these times of lifting up and supporting our continued growth in mission and ministry. So that we can indeed rejoice together, we have several very special events planned in the weeks ahead. We begin with two very personal and compelling Mission Moments; the first from Mark Yoss, then followed-up by Paul Betthauser a week later. As we enter then into November, an insert will be provided within the bulletin that expresses again the beliefs that we lift up as Christian disciples with our giving back to God. On the 12th and 13th, “pledge cards” will be distributed in worship as a resource for prayerful discernment in (re-)committing a covenant of mission support for the ministry God has placed in our care that is Christ Lutheran Church. It is my hope that after a week of prayer, reflection, conversation, study, devotion, and Spirit-led visioning, all will return to worship on the 19th or 20th for our Consecration Weekend worship services with the completed pledge cards. During each service, following the sermon, there will be an intentional holy time for specific prayer and committed action toward God within the dedicated “Blessing at the Altar” liturgy in our worship. This includes making our commitments to God and the placing of our pledges there at His altar of grace and mercy. Holy Scripture is filled with several promises from God regarding blessing, as well as the care and stewardship of those blessings. These scriptures – the very Word of God – are promises made to us to inspire our joy and hope rather than our guilt or suffering. As such, we as church together lift up in worship these promises made to us by God, and the promise we make in reply for recognition and support of His work to and through us. As you may have been able to determine by now, the faith walk that we all journey on together as disciples in His church here at Christ Lutheran is a holy walk that I take as powerfully moving. It remains my prayer that this time of visioning ahead and shared blessing in the support of God’s mission and ministry in our midst may be a joyous time in your walk with us as His church. Your servant and brother in Christ, Pastor Eric J. Allert
Pastor DJ’s Message Hello from
the preschool and
happy Fall!
Our children are busy learning, playing and having fun at school. We are so blessed to have such nurturing teachers who love unconditionally and supportive parents who have wonderful ideas to share. We are thankful for our school and church family! If anyone has ordered Butterbraids, they will be delivered on Tuesday, November 1st for church members. We will put them in the kitchen freezer and label the order with your name. Please pick them up sometime during the week or by the next Sunday. Thank you for your support! Our goal is to supplement our scholarship fund for community outreach. Our children will be learning about, “Jesus feeds the 5000” and “Daniel in the Lions Den”, music time with Ms. Linda, reading with our senior friends and also sharing a Thanksgiving feast with friends and family here at the school. If you would like to give some of your time to the preschool, please give us a call at 303-471-9290 or email Deb at dmorgans@clchr.org. We would love to share your talents and gifts with the children. We leave you with a favorite bible verse: Matthew 18:4-5 “Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.” “And, whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me.” Blessings to you and your family, Ms. Deb and Ms. Blair
We are entering into another wonderful and contentious voting season, and are already trapped in the midst of what looks to be a blood-soaked fight for this year’s presidential election. I do expect a lot of our community, as believers, but perhaps now more than ever. I expect us, as I imagine God does as well, to be able to hold a conversation with someone who disagrees with us and not assume at the forefront that they are a complete idiot. I find it often difficult to discuss divisive issues with people I agree with (because of the passion usually involved), so to hold a discussion in the midst of disagreement is a task many of us feel unprepared to do without resorting to shouting, dismissing, head-shaking, etc. As a general rule, volume and force are not Christian ways to win an argument. This brings out an interesting point, what does our faith have to say about how we vote? That may seem like an obvious question, but since I have seen this conversation lacking in the public sphere, I figured I would offer a moment of reflection here. We are of the faith that we call Christian, which means that first we proclaim Christ crucified. I think this bears on our voting habits in two significant ways: 1) A usual way of approaching a vote is “How will this affect me?” In Christ we encounter a self-emptying love which puts priority on God and neighbor (note that love of self is only a secondary part of those boiled down laws and commandments). A prayer I think we all have to hold before God is “How will this affect my neighbor?” You do not need to go google an answer for this; you know your neighbor. Ponder how your vote impacts his/her life. 2) If you have an unquestioning devotion to an issue, you need to spend a bit of time in prayer. I try to preface vote topics with, “I may be wrong but…” I think immediately of Jesus’ final prayer in the garden where he asks God that if it is possible, can he skip out on this ending. There is something faithful about uncertainty in the way that we live and decide. In the church office, we do receive a fax on occasion with a “Christian Voting Guide” which gives you answers that are both arbitrary and shallow. Spend time talking to God about your votes, not figuring out how someone else would cast your vote for you. There are many other ways our faith informs our decision making, but remember this: at the center of who we are is the cross, which offers quite a different perspective than any political party, famous person, or politician will offer. When you talk to God, your decision may or may not change, but the more time you spend in conversation about decisions, the more you will be drawn into the story of what God is doing in the world rather than what the world is doing for itself. Blessings in your peaceful deliberations, Pastor DJ
A Word of Grace
for Peace, Wonder, and Growth in Discipleship “I pledge my commitment to God because I am supporting His vision.” “Being a part of this church has made us better people and our family is stronger.” “We pledge because it is our turn.” “The church is my family, and they have always been there for me when I needed them. Now, I need to support my family in where we going next.” The Church – this beautiful gift that we have been given by our LORD – is precisely that: a gift. It is not something that we could ever have created ourselves. It is not something that we earned or in any way deserved. It is also not a gift that we are to allow to wither away, or keep to ourselves. Paul writes in the 3rd chapter of his letter to Colossae, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful…” The church is gifted to the world so that we may remember, celebrate, equip, and share this peace of Christ; that it may not just rule only in our hearts, but may also be presented to the world as well. In so doing, we take upon the hope of Christ that the Christian body would both grow larger in mission for ministry, and be thankful. As we come together in Christ’s Spirit – to be his hands and feet, his heart and voice, his presence and peace in the world – may we continue to proclaim our love for His church. May that love be so obvious and powerful, that it continues to grow the church family in all that we do and all that we are. For we are Christ’s church TOGETHER, and what is not to love about that!
NEW WEDNESDAY NIGHT ADULT STUDY TO BEGIN NOVEMBER 2ND On November 2nd, Pastor Eric will begin a new weekly adult study series entitled “Unpacking Creation.” Together, we will look at the Genesis narratives and see again the Good-ness of God’s work, what it means to be created to create, the impact of the fall, and quite a bit more. Classes are at 7pm in the Sonrise Room and we hope to see you there.

Dear fellow congregation members, An important, though possibly sometimes overlooked, seasonal activity is the election of our Nominating Committee. Per our Constitution, this team of six is elected to a one-year term at our Fall semi-annual meeting, upcoming on Saturday, November 19th. The main function of this committee is to seek out and recommend candidates from within the congregation for each of our elected lay leadership positions. This includes candidates for Congregation Council, Legacy and Endowment Committee, Preschool Advisory Committee, and Synod Assembly Voting Members. The Nominating Committee interacts with potential candidates to encourage involvement, discern interest, and answer questions regarding the various positions. In this capacity, the Committee performs an integral function in generating broad congregational participation and a diversity of lay leadership. With a dedicated, pro-active committee in place, we as a congregation hopefully avoid a disconnect between the very real leadership needs of the church and those willing to serve. So, I would ask you to consider a few things: your possible interest in serving on the Nominating Committee; your potential involvement in a different leadership capacity in the coming year; and of course, know that we need your active participation at the meeting on the 19th. Respectfully, Steve Schaeberle Congregation Council Vice President
Christmas Outreach NEWS! For several years, CLC has adopted 50ish families at Harrington Elementary School. This year however, 98% of the kids at Harrington are on the free lunch/reduced fee programs. The new administration just could not see selecting just 50 families so together we decided we would continue to support them with back to school supplies and the end of year carnival (which supports the entire school) but we will NOT be delivering gifts this year. Please continue to pray for the Harrington families and the staff at this very challenged and special school. So, what ARE we going to do? CLC has agreed to adopt the youth at the Urban Peak Shelter. Urban Peak serves youth ages 15 through 24 who are currently experiencing homelessness or are at imminent risk of becoming homeless (i.e. couch surfing with friends, soon-to-be exiting foster care, etc.) They typically house 40 youth but can house up to 60 in the winter months. CLC provides dinner to the shelter on the fourth Friday of the month and we’re thrilled to be able to do more for this valuable charity partner. We will begin this service project by decorating the shelter. We need holiday decorations and a tree. Keep in mind there are many faiths at Urban Peak so we are looking for a variety of décor. We will decorate after Thanksgiving thou the exact date is yet to be determined but will be announced in the bulletin and enews soon. Please bring in your decorations to the office by 11/20. In addition to providing gifts to the youth, Urban Peak is in need of a few items for the shelter itself like board games, art supplies, basketballs, footballs, hackeysacks and movies (PG-PG13). As for the youth themselves, all items are to be UNwrapped. Urban Peak will distribute the gifts as appropriate for the current clientele residing at the shelter on Christmas. An “adopt an item” tree will be located in the Narthex. All gifts should be delivered to CLC by December 11th. Items will include: book lights, laundry bags, backpacks, slippers, ear plugs and sleeping masks, personal fans, PJs, long underwear, toiletry bags, and gift cards (Target, Walmart, grocery stores, subway, McDonalds, etc). Items should be delivered to CLC by 12/11. Thank You CLC!
Ladies Christmas Party
The Pastors’ wives would like to invite all the ladies of CLC to the Christ Lutheran Church Ladies Christmas Party. It will be held on Sunday December 4th from 3:00-5:30 pm at church in the Fellowship Hall. Please bring an appetizer or treat for the chocolate fountain to share, drinks will be provided. Also, bring a wrapped Christmas ornament for a fun gift exchange! We look forward to having some fun fellowship together this Christmas season. ~ Jenny, Jen, and Judy!

THRIVENT CHOICE DOLLARS DESIGNATION DEADLINE
Calling all CLC/Thrivent Members! March 31, 2017 is the final date to make your Thrivent CHOICE dollar designations that you've received in 2016. As of October 1, only 44 of a possible 116 CLC members had made their CHOICE dollar designations. That's just 38%! It would be great to complete these designations by January 1, 2017 well before the deadline and get these designations in the calendar year 2016! Use your CHOICE dollars (hopefully for CLC) or lose them on 3/31/17. It's simple, please go to www.Thrivent.com to double-check
your online Thrivent account to determine if you have CHOICE dollars to designate and follow the easy procedure to complete your designation.
OR if you are not set up online, you can call 1-800-847-4836 and select "Thrivent Choice" when prompted and talk to a Thrivent representative about your CHOICE dollars. Whether you choose to designate CHOICE dollars to Christ Lutheran or another charitable cause, please use the dollars you've received. If you have any questions feel free to contact Steve Strom, Thrivent Congregational Advocate at CLC at sstrom58@gmail.com. THANKS!
