Tyson when he was training to be a Marine. “Dad,” he said, “How can I be a Marine who is trained to kill and destroy, and also be a Christian?” Tough question, huh? “Fortunately,” I told him, “Lutheran theology has addressed and answered this question.” Luther called it “sinning boldly!” First Luther along with scripture acknowledges that there is no escaping sin. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” St. Paul wrote. “If a soldier kills and destroys believing that that action will save lives and serve a greater good, even if that soldier is wrong, God’s forgiveness and grace is stronger than any human sin or error!” Jesus says, “Blessed are the Peacemakers...” sometimes that peace may have to be obtained by strength, soldiers and even war because of human sin! But many a soldier who survives being injured bodily comes back from battle wounded in their mind and soul. There must be peacemakers at home to greet them and welcome them back as well. Sunday, September 16th, showing of the Video during worship was well received and a number of people came forward to help shape the future of this ministry. An intense video with a battle scene clip made the indelible impression upon many of how PTSD Post Traumatic Stress Disorder develops. If you didn’t see and would like to, I have a copy in my office I can lend out. Here at CLC, WE are well on our way to starting a new Ministry through “Operation One Nation, Project Sanctuary and Centus Counseling!” Programs meant to bring that peacemaking to our military personnel and their families. To begin supporting these ministries we will be hosting a benefit concert at CLC on October 18th beginning at 7 p.m. This concert will exclusively feature Michael Peterson, a Country Western musician (who is also a Lutheran! Imagine that!). Michael Peterson has made 9 tours to Iraq and Afghanistan. His commitment to “Moving People” has caused organizations as diverse as Special Olympics, Selective Service, Ronald McDonald House, the USO, St Jude Children’s research hospital, the American Legion and most recently the New Holland Corporation and the U.S. Army to seek him out as a voice for messages that matter. Michael is donating his time and efforts now to support us in supporting Project Sanctuary and Centus Counseling. For more information contact me or watch for more announcements. I hope to see you on October 18 at the concert! Many Blessings + Pastor Tom

October Volunteer of the Month - Becky Tesch

Submitted by Crista Larsen Greetings and Happy Autumn to all! Since we recently began our new Sunday School year at CLC, I thought it only fitting that we feature our beloved Sunday School Coordinator, Becky Tesch for our October Volunteer of the Month.

Becky, along with her husband, Torrey, and three children, Ryan (10), Dylan (7) and Meghan (7), have been involved with CLC for over twelve years. Currently, Becky serves as Sunday School Coordinator, but has tirelessly been involved in many other ministries too, including Children’s Church, Activity Bags, Family Movie Night, Altar Guild, Service Greeting, Chefs for Christ, Sweet Bread Delivery and Vacation Bible Study. When I asked Becky about her varied volunteer efforts at CLC, she simply answered “I just go wherever needed,” and wow, does she ever! I also recently spoke to Becky about the many tireless hours that she puts into Sunday School. I was touched when she brilliantly put it this way: “…Once I was asked why I volunteer the way that I do. Well, that is an easy one. Because God told me to! Last I checked we do what our Father tells us to. I had a life threatening illness called pancreatitis six years ago, and when I recovered, I knew I was given a second chance for a reason. I have given my all to CLC

not only because I truly feel the Lord has given me this gift, but also because CLC is my family. Just like a family, we stick together through it all. CLC was there for us when I had my kiddos and when I was ill…and now it is my turn to give back and would love for more of our CLC family to join me. I love being the Sunday School coordinator with all of my heart. As one of my teachers once told me, it is a privilege to be able to share the love and wisdom of Jesus Christ with our youth! God has given me a gift and a task…and I will use is according to His will. Please, come join me…we are always in need of more volunteers. Isn't that what family does - work together? See you around....” Wow! Such powerful words from our sister in Christ! Family and children are an obvious passion for Becky. The joy that she gets from volunteering radiates from her, and now she is passing that joy on to her family, as they too volunteer and participate in church activities such as the Advance Group, Council Nominating Committee, Adult Bible Studies, Sundae Sunday, Sunday School, Dynamite, and Joy and Jubilation Choirs. We all, here at CLC, extend our gratitude toward Becky and her entire family. Thank you, thank you, thank you Tesch Family! You are a blessing to us all!

Preschool News for October Hello from the Preschool!

Here we are in October already, where does the time go? We wanted to introduce our new Director Substitute, Blair Strickland. Blair has been married to Greg for 11 years and they have three children. Abigail, who is 9, Sophia, who is 7 and Greg, who will be 2 this month. They used to live in Florida and have been in the Highlands Ranch area for the past 4 years. Blair comes to us with a background in Early Childhood Education and Restaurant Management prior. She most recently worked in a smaller Christian school as the Director and is very excited to be a part of the CLCP team! We welcome her! This month we will be hosting vision and hearing screening for our students, enjoying a visit from the fire department, listening to a story from the local librarian and enjoying our Halloween parade and party! Our fall fundraiser will also begin when we sell those yummy butter braids to stock our freezers for the holidays. We will be putting order forms upstairs once that begins and remind everyone in the bulletin. Chapel themes for the month are; Baby Moses and The Good Samaritan. Our teachers will also attend the Early Childhood Christian Conference this month as part of their continuing education requirement. We thank our wonderful CLC family for your continued support! Blessings this month! — Ms. Deb & Ms. Blair

Dynamite: Exploding for Christ! The first meeting of Dynamite this school year brought twentyone 4th-6th graders to church on September 9th. We welcomed many new youth to the group and had a fun evening getting to know each other. The kids discussed what God gives us and how we give to others. Eleven kids from the Dynamite youth group traveled to the Ronald McDonald House in Aurora on September 15 for their first service project of the school year. The kids earned money from a car wash in August 2011 to pay for the food and other supplies. They worked together to prepare homemade potpies, salad, and dessert for 25 people staying at the house. We were amazed with how hard the kids worked and their willingness to do whatever was needed to make the meal a blessing to the families. This group worked with kind and generous hearts! Thank you to Cheryl Burton for organizing the project and to Chris Hegele, Heidi Jason, Beth and Rodger Ott, Angie Burt, and Erika Alpern for joining in on the wonderful evening. Our October meeting is Sunday, October 14 from 5pm-7pm. Gary will be grilling brats and hot dogs and we’ll enjoy dinner together before starting our evening of fun. We plan to hike on the trail behind the church and play some of the best games ever! Our Bible theme is, “God Provides!” All kids and their friends are welcome to join us! Please contact Gary Knutson or Erika Alpern eajteach@yahoo.com with any questions.

IT’S THAT SIMPLE

Looking for a way to simplify your giving at CLC? Here’s a good option: Simply Giving. Simply Giving is an automated giving program offered by Thrivent Financial Services designed to help you conveniently, consistently, and joyfully share your financial gifts through electronic funds transfer (EFT). You may already be using an EFT to have your mortgage, car payment, or bills automatically withdrawn from your checking or savings account. It eliminates the need to write checks or having to play “catch up” if you’ve been away. It also helps the congregation have a consistent, predictable income all year long. It’s simple! We hope that you will prayerfully consider this giving opportunity. If you are interested in Simply Giving or have questions, give Sallie Burns in the office a call at 303-791-0803, ext. 106, or sburns@clchr.org. She’d be happy to answer your questions about it or sign you up.

Women of J.O.Y (Jesus, Others, Yourself)

The Women of J.O.Y. is an evening Bible study that meets in Sharon Morken’s home on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. We will be starting a new Bible study in September by Sheila Walsh, “Let Go, Live Free of the Burdens All Women Know”. We have a great time discussing God’s Word and message through studies as this. We also do service projects and have social activities such as going for “tea”, going for fun plays, seeing the Christmas lights at one of Denver’s venues. If interested in joining our group, please call Sharon Morken at 303-791-2076.

WHO ARE THE OWLS?

Outreach Grant Street Reach Grant Street Reach is an outreach program for homeless people in Downtown Denver. They serve food to over 700 people every Monday at St Paul Lutheran church on 16th St. The program is in great need of people who can commit to once a month, twice a month or even every week. You can go as early as 8:30 in the morning to help set up or you can just go and serve the food over the noon hour. They also need people to help clean everything up from 3:30 to 5:00 in the afternoon. If you think you could help this wonderful outreach to people that need a meal please sign the response sheet.

We are off to a wonderful start in Sunday School!

We have many new things planned for this year, from our new CLC Sunday School Thumbprint Family tree to our focus this year which is Random Acts of Kindness! Flat Pastor (spin off of Flat Stanley) is available for download from our website to color and travel around with kiddos as they do their Acts of Kindness! I know CLC has many pretty awesome students so we want to see lots of Kindness reports and pictures of Flat Pastor coming in no matter how simple they may be. I want to hear about them all! We always have an open registration so if you or you know someone who is interested in our Sunday school program let them know our door is always open! Volunteer needs in October needs are as follows: Teachers for 3 yr old, 1st grade (14 & 21st), 3rd and 4th grade. Helpers are needed for 1st (Oct 7th only), 3rd and 4th. Thank you for helping shape our children here at Christ Lutheran Church. Links to the volunteer paperwork and sign up forms are available on our website. You can also find us on facebook! Search "Christ Lutheran Sunday School" and there we are!

The OWLs (Older, Wiser Lutherans) are a group of seniors at CLC who meet every second Friday of the month at 12:00 noon for a potluck luncheon in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Our gatherings are mostly social but we also support and encourage each other in sad and difficult times. Occasionally, entertainment is provided. We have an annual fundrariser collecting monies to purchase animals, i.e. goats, rabbits, ducks, etc. that are given to needy families in other countries through the ELCA Barnyard Fund. Also, upon baptism each infant or child receives a cuddly toy lamb from the OWLs. If you are interested in visiting or joining this group, please call Ingrid Hirst at 303-791-4394. Everybody is welcome!

Looking For Book Donations

The woman's book club of CLC will be hosting a used book sale October 13th & 14th and October 20th & 21st. This is the time to donate those books your college bound student left behind (there may be a high school student looking for that classic he never read). You might find the perfect Christmas present or travel guide. If you have books to donate or can help with the sale, please contact Susan Carroll 303-791-4323. If you would like to learn more about book club please contact Cindy Russell at 303-470-5989; we'd love to have you join us!

Pastor DJs Visit

Pastor Daniel Dent Jr. was here visiting in September with his wife Jen & their two children Grace & Caleb. What a pleasure it was to meet him & his family. Pastor D.J. 4 years out of seminary grew up in Toledo Ohio & has been the current pastor at the Trinity Lutheran Evangelical Church in Arcadia, Ohio. He has a creative fun engaging personality & is open & spirited & seemed to fit well with our congregation. He tells us he enjoys working with the youth & to recharge his batteries he finds comfort in playing his guitar in solitude.

We are excited to of the possibility of him becoming our Associate Pastor. We think he will make a great addition to our congregational staff.
