CASH for

CROPS

Cash for crops one of our congregations major fundraising projects during the year here at CLC was amazing as our youth went at 5am and picked up veggies and food to hand out to the community. Our youth and adults on the trip then organized and handed out what we picked up to the surrounding community. This ministry at CLC that we have collected for each of the last three years helps feed the Pueblo community, a community that has so little. Every week the cost to do this is $150, we here at CLC have made that happen ever since the ELCA stopped funding this ministry 3 years ago. The church has many volunteers to help but does not have the financial resources to do this alone, Pastor Samuel the Sr. Pastor at Pueblo wanted me to express to CLC’s whole congregation how much these means to the community and how much Pastor Samuel appreciates the love and compassion CLC shows in funding this ministry.

Safeguarding God’s Children There will be a Safe Guarding God’s Children class on September 20 at Noon. If you are interesting in working with the children at CLC in any capacity, this class is necessary/ mandatory. If you are interesting in attending, please let Gary, Deb Morgans or Allyson Evans know. There are forms that will need to be filled out and we will send those to you ahead of time if you let us know. If you are interested in taking the class but can not make it on Sept 20, please let us know that too.

Pastor Steve’s Message Dear Friends: Labor Day is just around the corner, which means that fall can’t be far behind! During these warm latter weeks of August, it has been good to check-in with various families and students as young people go on to new stages of schooling (from preschool and kindergarten to colleges and universities). At Christ Lutheran there are so many opportunities to celebrate these life passages and new stages of growth and change among our households.

During the weeks from June through August the Transition Team members (and/or its three sub-teams) have come together to meet a dozen times. They have shaped surveys and interviews, talked with staff members, and been wrestling with questions of mission and vision. What an excellent team! Thanks to all of you who have participated in numerous ways to inform the congregational self-study and to shape the conversation. On the last two weekends of September, after each worship service, the Transition Team will be available in the Fellowship Hall (or other suitable space) to give one “last chance” for folks to come and share thoughts and dreams about the mission and vision of CLC moving into the future. I, personally, plan to be available on September 26-27. We will be there to listen! Help us to answer the question: “What are the core values of the gospel that we aim to exemplify in this congregation?” The Transition Team plans to meet twice (as a whole group) in September, to bring together the congregation’s discernment and perspectives; and then to prepare to make a solid preliminary report to the church council on the second Tuesday of October. I look forward to seeing you in worship in the coming weeks. A full and meaningful schedule of special events is planned! For example: • Labor Day weekend Sept. 5-6 • Rally weekend Sept. 12-13 • Mission Fair Sept. 19-20 • Youth-led worship Sept. 26-27 • 30th anniversary weekend Oct. 3-4 Thank you for the opportunity to share in ministry among you. In Christ, Steve Berke, Interim Pastor

Pastor DJ’s Message

Summer Mission Trip

“Please speak about the meeting of Jesus after Easter and the finding of the bones of Jesus on the news.” Being that this “question” is being answered several months after its submission, it seems a bit out of context. To my knowledge, there is not a current investigation into any remains claiming to belong to Jesus, but I would not be surprised if there were an ongoing conversation in some circles about it. If so, it isn’t the first and won’t be the last time this topic comes up, so let’s take a look.

The Sr. High Summer Mission Trip to Compton, CA where we served our sister ELCA church Pueblo De Dios was amazing! We completed several projects including a complete reorganization of storage spaces at the church, remodeled a library, a new youth room and a Sunday school room. We want to thank our pre-school (Deb Morgans) for donating $2,500 to help with our remodels during the mission trip. Our major task we completed was putting on a VBS at the church. We had 35 kids the first day and 62 the second thru 4th days. We fed the church families every night after VBS. Please join us September 26th & 27th as Claire Cantrell delivers the message during youth worship weekend and she tells of our week of service. Pueblo DE Dios sewing ministry also donated Alter paraments for the whole year to our congregation, we will unveil the first one youth worship weekend.

Sunday School Teacher Training/Information Meeting

We will be having another Sunday School Teacher Training/Information meeting on August 30 at 11:00. If you have ever had a thought about teaching Sunday School, this is the time to come find out more! Have I mentioned that you don’t have to teach your own child’s class??? I never taught my own kids. If you want to be in your kid’s class you’re welcome to but it is not a requirement to teach! Don’t forget to register your kids for Sunday School (even if you did it last year)! I will have the Sunday School table set up on August 30. Beat the rush and fill out the form before Rally Day!

First, to the finding of bones or any other biblical story piece, I say what does Martin Luther have to say? He was not fond of the religious relics of the time, mostly because he believed them to be lies: “It is claimed that the head of St. John the Baptist is in Rome, although all histories show that the Saracens opened John’s grave and burned everything to powder. Yet the pope is not ashamed of his lies. So with reference to other relics like the nails and the wood of the cross—they are the greatest lies.” (Martin Luther's Works, Vol 54.131) Without taking to a careful analysis of each piece recovered, the question must be asked “What are we seeking?” I heard recently that some believe the remnants of Noah’s Ark are in Turkey, only there are soldiers there preventing anyone from studying it. Even if we believe this to be true, what are we looking for when we hope for its existence? Some would say definitive proof of the Bible’s historical accuracy. Others would offer it would allow us a chance to worship at a holy site. Yet others that it should be something we would obtain to preserve our history. There are some great ancient grounds to be toured and studied (and I’ve heard and seen pictures although haven’t seen with my own eye) that offer special insight into the stories that are handed down to us, and some have even claimed to have their faith renewed by their visit. All this is good provided it does not distract us from our story, that we do not worship a place or an object but God and God made flesh in Jesus Christ. Another of Martin Luther’s objections to relics was that they were venerated and adored, almost as if they were the objects to be worshiped. Second, to the meeting of Jesus after Easter, our tradition affirms a bodily resurrection of Jesus, meaning there were no bones left in the tomb. The “discovery” that happens every decade or so seems to try and disprove that piece of our tradition and possibly discredit the entire story. I have honestly never paid that much attention when that or several other discoveries like it appear mostly because it is couched as uncovering some truth that the church has been hiding. When encountering a “proof” or an “uncovering” just recall that even if we could prove things, our hope is in Christ crucified who is proclaimed as a stumbling block and foolishness to those who do not believe, and while he says he’s coming back we probably ought not waste our energy seeking him among the graves. (see Acts 1:11) Peace, Pastor DJ
