We Are Church Together A Message From Pastor Eric “And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell, that person will certainly not lose their reward.” – Matthew 10:42 As the images, videos, and reports of the Houston and SE Texas area come through one after the other, my heart aches at each new story where loss and devastation seem so rampant. A son being offered a satellite phone to use by a news reporter to find out if his father is alive and safe… Two tents pitched on the slanted roof tops of a home submerged where a third of the front door is already below the surface as sheets of rain continue to poor down… Residents of a senior care facility wading in waist-deep murky water as they continue with their knitting while praying for their rescue… And on… And on… And on… I have been in supportive communications and shared prayers with Bishop Michael Rinehart of the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod. One of our sister churches in Rockport, TX reports “the steeple is gone; sky can be seen from the fellowship hall, nave and sanctuary; flooring is destroyed; and the columbarium has blown over with the contents dumped on the ground.” Both Bishop Rinehart and I firmly believe that in the face of such monumental disaster, the call for disciples to intentionally move toward the need and bring relief has always been a clear message from Christ Jesus. Our Lord says, “Go and serve. Go and help. Go in peace. Go and listen. Go and cry the tears. Go and love. Go and give. Go and proclaim. Go and rediscover hope. Go and be my church – my hands and feet and heart and voice. GO!” God reminds His children in Isaiah 43:2a that “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” Once again, the people along the gulf coast of our nation cling to these words of comfort. They do so with great hope that the words will again be true – that God will be with them through the disciples of His church. It is the mantle we all carry alongside Jesus to be present in the midst of suffering and to bring light into darkness. As Lutherans, I encourage you to please prayerfully consider joining me in both of the following two options in offering your compassionate service.

First, provide immediate assistance by reaching out to Lutheran Disaster Response to offer your prayers and financial support. You can designate an additional gift through our congregation set apart for Lutheran Disaster Response. Your gifts make it possible to provide fast and effective support to communities in need, whenever and wherever a disaster may strike. You may choose to designate your gift to a specific disaster or give where the need is greatest. If you decide to give to a specific disaster, such as those impacted by Hurricane Harvey, your gift will be used 100 percent for that disaster unless more funds are received than what is needed. If this happens, your gift will be used to address a similar effort. To make these arrangements, simply contact Mrs. Anne Buderus at finance@clchr.org or by calling the church office at 303-791-0803. To learn more about this specific ministry, go to ELCA.org or call 800-638-3522. Second, I have joined with Lutheran pastors, youth ministers, parents & youth around the country to call upon the organizers of the ELCA National Youth Gathering to ensure that the greatest focus possible is achieved in using the opportunity for mission and service work by the 30,000+ Lutheran youth and leaders that are already preparing to come to Houston in June next year. Our church senior high youth will not only be attending the National Youth Gathering itself, but we will also be adding to our agenda additional missional service work to bring relief, help rebuild impacted communities, and forge new relationships that are rooted in the Gospel. Please also consider an additional gift in support of this event for our youth to take part in this life-changing opportunity. For more information, again, please contact Mrs. Anne Buderus. We ARE better when we are church TOGETHER!

Anything You Can Do… Let Me Show You How I Will Make It Better! A Stewardship Message From Pastor Eric “God cannot be outdone in generosity!” This is one of my favorite theological beliefs phrases that helps me understand how generous we are called to be in our stewardship of all that God has already given. No matter how much I offer of myself, God is always able to provide more generously for me than I ever could for myself. And when I am generous toward others, God loves to make it “fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28). I often hear from people, “whenever I give of myself, I find I get so much more in return.” It is the paradox of Christian generosity that can only best be explained by experience. Saint Teresa of Calcutta used to say, “God owns all the money in the world anyway.” Therefore, it is a good challenge for us to make an account of our stewardship several times a year, to ask God, “Am I being gracious enough with what You have given me? Is there something You have given me that needs to be used as a blessing for someone else?” Here’s a challenging thought for you to stimulate your prayers for (at least) the month of September: Love affects a person better than it does an idea. Now what does that kind of Godly vision stir up and create for us as Christ’s church? Our generosity should reflect how we expect heaven to run when we get there. With that kind of developing revelation, we can then begin to dream in such a way that as a generous church, the souls we are seeking to help now may be the ones dancing next to us for all eternity. Therefore, “Do I live out my generosity as a disciple in God’s world now as conducting business transactions, or as care for a future heavenmate?” I am so very grateful to all of you who have given so much to Christ Lutheran this past year through prayer, service, tithe and offering. We celebrate together a very rich communal experience because of your love affecting very real persons. We have magnificent facilities because of your generosity that provides for our tangible needs. And we have been able to be very generous to local people in need through many additional individual gifts of joyful excess. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

CALL COMMITTEE UPDATE August was a Spirit-filled whirlwind of activity that included several steps ahead which brought clarity in God’s vision for Christ Lutheran. The second round of interviews with the first slate of candidates has since been completed, which now brings a time that calls for the quiet and calm needed to hear God’s voice. Please continue to keep Pastor Eric, our Call Committee, and the Church Council in your supportive prayers. Your efforts to demonstrate your love for the leadership moving ahead have been a wonderful blessing. We thank you for the additional patience that you have given, the warmth extended to Pastor Gail in bridging these two chapters, and the recognition of the importance for the process. Additional updates will be made through the appropriate release methods when ready.

(Stories Of Faith In Action)

Outreach at CLC is up and running for the Fall Season! Starting with our recent opportunity to check your vitals. The Life Line Community Health Screening Event was held on Thursday August 24. Over 91 persons from the congregation and community were able to get vital health checks completed at CLC. Thank you to Karen Patz to organizing all the details! Our Annual CLC Outdoor Worship and annual Picnic was held Sunday August 27! A HUGE shout out to all the volunteers and staff, Karen, Linda, Gary, who helped organize and serve at this event. Next year, we look to broaden our reach and invite even MORE neighbors from the community. What a wonderful opportunity to witness our faith and invite your neighbors! As the summer ends and the Fall Season begins look for the Annual MINISTRY FAIR, Sept 24! Now is the time to consider joining a new ministry of CLC. During the month of October, our Outreach Focus will be Food Insecurity. We will highlight our food ministries and how you can help alleviate hunger in our community.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT ADULT STUDY IN AUGUST

Pastor Eric’s weekly adult study series continues on Wednesday nights at 7:00pm. Join us this month as we journey further on the Exodus following the miraculous events atop Mt. Sinai! It’s not too late and you’re not too far behind to join in! This is a great group of all levels of Bible-experience that enjoys reviewing scripture together with new lenses, digging deeper into the text, applying personal relevance, and engaging in challenging study questions. If you have ever thought about wanting to know the scriptures more, this is your opportunity! Email Pastor Eric at pastorallert@clchr.org to receive the coursework for the previous weeks, and to find out more!

SING WITH CELEBRATION CHOIR FOR LUTHERFEST! CLC’s Celebration Choir is gearing up to perform exciting music for the upcoming LutherFest Celebration of 500 Years of the Reformation! We will sing for the special 8:30am and 10:30am worship services on Sunday, October 29th. Rehearsals are on Thursdays from 7-8pm, September 21st through October 26th; the final rehearsal on the 26th being from 7-9pm. We are looking for high school and adult singers to join us for this very special event. For more info, contact Linda Holcombe at: lholcombe@clchr.org.

Katie Luther, Wife of Martin Luther, Visits CLC October 21-22, 2017! To kick off our celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, CLC will play host to Katie Luther on Saturday & Sunday, October 21st & 22nd! Portrayed in full authentic costume by Pastor JaneAnn Settergren, Katie Luther will share “Katie Remembers” as the sermon at all services that weekend, which is a presentation of Martin Luther’s life from Katie’s point of view.

2017-2018 VISIONING SUMMIT On September 22nd and 23rd, Pastor Eric will be leading the Council in a Visioning Summit. This event will be a prayerful planning session for establishing Christ’s vision for His church in both immediate and long-term goal-setting for the congregation. Agenda topics for vision will then naturally include identifying and continuing church growth, congregational identity in discipleship, worship as blessing, future staffing needs, benevolence, equipping lay-leadership and strengthening infrastructure, and capital campaign directives. Please lift your elected Council leaders in prayer as we dream with God for the sake of the Church in the world now and in to the future that God has before us.

CLC Volunteer News

Over the next few months, I will highlight various ministries within CLC, both as a means of sharing information and to recruit new members. If any ministry catches your attention, feel free to contact Karen at volunteer@clchr.org. During August Mission Moments, I highlighted the Maintenance Team that keeps our building running and looking so good. Tim and his team would sure welcome some additional members, especially on the monthly Saturday morning work days. If you have maintenance skills and a willingness to work, we’d love for you to join the team! Thanks to the Chefs for Christ groups who rose to the occasion for several events over the past weeks. We had members needing meals, as well as a funeral for which our Chefs prepared, delivered, and served lunch, and we are certainly grateful! If you love to cook and serve your fellow members of CLC, contact Karen to add your name to this vital ministry. There are some ministries that need folks to serve periodically, such as Sanctuary Care Team. This team cleaned and polished the sanctuary a few weeks ago, and made it shine as we head into fall programming. We will certainly spruce up the sanctuary again before Advent, as we could use your help! Please consider joining us 3-4 times a year to keep the sanctuary of CLC beautiful and well-maintained. One ministry that is in great need of some new members are the Worship Teams at all services. Worship Team members serve as ushers, collect offering, serve communion, as well as other duties. There are 3-4 teams for each service, so you would serve once or perhaps twice in a month. If we added more members at all services, members may only need to serve every 4-6 weeks. Please prayerfully consider joining a team at your regular service time. I’m looking forward to adding new members to Worship Teams at all services!

Coming soon... Flu Season With the fall comes that fun season, cold and flu season. I am sure we have all experienced a cold or the flu, these viruses can vary greatly in severity and how miserable they make us feel. Then we find ourselves looking for the best treatments, and prevention so we don’t experience it again or we can prevent our loved ones from the same virus. Our friends at Kaiser have published the 11 survival tips for cold and flu season. 1. The flu vaccine takes up to two week to provide protection and is effective for about 12 months. The vaccine is different every year, based off the strains that are thought to be the most prevalent and most dangerous. This means it protects you from those strains of the flu – not all strains. So when you hear “but I got the flu shot, and still got the flu.” The chances are you got one of the strains that was not included in the vaccine. 2. Get the flu shot before the end of October. So the vaccine isn’t full proof but it does decrease the likelihood of getting the flu by 50%. By being vaccinating earlier than later, you will be covered for the entire flu season. The CDC recommends those over 6 months old receive the vaccine, but particularly important for children, the elderly, and people with serious underlying conditions. 3. There is more to prevention than vaccines. The best way to protect ourselves from viruses in general is good hand washing. Wash your hand regularly and try to avoid touching your face. In addition avoid being around others who are ill, and clean/ sanitize surfaces that may get contaminated. 4. Get care if you think you have the flu. The difference between a cold and the flu – a cold comes on gradually and generally does not include a fever. In contrast the flu hits you suddenly and you will feel like a truck hit you; chills, fever, tired, and achy all over. If you feel like it’s the flu, seek care right away. 5. Don’t ask your doctor for antibiotics. A cold or the flu is from a virus, antibiotics treat bacterial infections not viral infections. Antibiotics won’t work, and increase antibiotic resistance, which means they are less likely to work when you really need them. There are other options to help alleviate

symptoms. On occasion secondary infections develop after having a cold or the flu these may require antibiotics, your doctor can help you identify the difference. 6. Your body’s defenses need time and support. Drink lots of fluids, rest, and treat the symptoms. 7. People with cold and flu symptoms are contagious for about a week. Contagious period starts 24 hours before symptoms and 5-6 days after becoming sick. Keep this is mind, especially when making decisions about who you will be around. Keep the germs at home whenever possible. 8. Over the counter medications are not always harmless. Acetaminophen (Tylenol), is an active ingredient in many pain relievers and cold medicines, and can cause serious liver damage. The most you should take in a 24-hour period is 4 grams (4,000mg). So read labels carefully and know what you are taking. 9. Take single ingredient medications that treat specific symptoms. Whenever possible use single ingredient medications. Pay attention to those that cause drowsiness and those that don’t, this will help you choose what is best for each time of the day. For example antihistamines are great for allergic reactions, but with cold/ flu a decongestant will be better. Decongestants are often not recommended with high blood pressure or someone taking another type of stimulate, so if you take medications be sure to talk with your doctor about what is a safe choice for over the counter medications and treatment. 10. Symptoms typically last longer than you think. You might expect to feel better in a few days; however, a cough can linger for weeks. You should seek care if symptoms worsen or last longer than 3 weeks. 11. There is no cure for the cold or flu. This is one of those illnesses we just have to let our bodies fight off, we then build immunity against that virus. Just keep in mind there are more than 200 viruses that cause colds and the flu. This is why the common cold is so common, and why we have to change the flu shot each year. So let’s work hard to stay healthy this cold and flu season!

Welcome Back to Preschool!

Hello from downstairs in the preschool! We are so excited to begin a new school year. Summer was very fun with nine weeks of summer camp! We are looking forward to wonderful things this year and so much fun. We will be starting chapel time with Pastor and Mr. Gary, music time with Ms. Linda, Spanish time with Ms. Sofia and our silver speakers who come from a local senior living center. New this year will be our Family Chapel time before school a few times a month! We are so blessed to have a staff of 21 amazing women who love to teach and love our Lord. We will begin the week of August 28th. Thank you so much for all of your support – we love being a ministry of CLC and wish everyone a great year in your own adventure. - Ms. Deb and Ms. Blair

Welcome we’re glad you’re here

Welcoming visitors and newcomers is one of the most important tasks that we have as a body of believers! Considering that visitors often sit towards the back of the sanctuary (and the last row if it is available!), we are flipping the order of communion so that those in the front will receive communion first. Those in the back, especially our visitors and newcomers, will have time to observe and prepare themselves for the process of receiving communion. The ushers will be able to guide and assist those with questions. This new practice begins Rally Day weekend, September 9-10. Questions? Ask Pr Gail or Pr Eric.

World Communion Sunday / Global Church Celebration

World Communion Sunday is a celebration observed annually on the first Sunday in October, to promote Christian unity. On September 30 and October 1, we will join with Christians throughout the world remembering Christ as the Head of the Church and we as part of the whole body of believers. Whether shared in a grand cathedral, a mud hut, outside on a hilltop, a meetinghouse, or in a storefront, Christians celebrate the communion liturgy in as many ways as there are congregations. In addition to celebrating communion with our sisters and brothers throughout the world, we will also celebrate the missionaries, teachers, medical personnel and young adults who are sent throughout the world via the ELCA. Pastor Gail and her husband, Randy Mundt have served in the ELCA Global Missions and she is eager to share with you some of her international experiences with sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
