Mondrian Book Bag
Now you can carry all your favourite books!
Based on the book The Bogan Mondrian by Steven Herrick
Materials:
• Cotton Bags – Large – Pack of 10 – 10790 • Aquatex Fabric Paint – Yellow – 500g – 17680 • Aquatex Fabric Paint – Red – 500g – 17681 • Aquatex Fabric Paint – Black 500g – 17684 • Aquatex Fabric Paint – Blue 500g – 17682 • Masking Tape – 18mm x 50m – 11774 • Other Materials Required: Pencil, scissors, eraser, cardboard, an iron & paint brushes
Use Piet Mondrian as inspiration for your bag like Luke and Charlotte!
1. Iron your cotton bag to remove any creases, adult supervision is recommended. Use masking tape to create squares and rectangles on your bag, making sure the masking tape is stuck down well.
2. Slide a piece of cardboard into your bag to stop the fabric paint from seeping through. Using a pencil, lightly write in each shape what colour you want it to be.
3. Get ready to begin painting each shape. Make sure you remove the pencil mark first, otherwise it will show through after the paint dries.
4. Once you have painted the shapes, allow the bag to dry. Make sure that the cardboard is not stuck to the bag during this process.
5. Using a pencil, lightly trace around the masking tape on the inside of each shape, including the ones left unpainted. You will use this as a guide in step 6. Remove the masking tape.
6. Use the outlines you created in step 5 as a guide and tape the insides of each shape as shown in the image above.
7. Place the cardboard back into the bag and use black fabric paint to paint around the shapes. Remove the cardboard and allow the bag to dry.
8. Heat set your bag with an iron or tumble dry to make it colour fast. Your book bag is now ready to use!

Bring Mia’s totem animal to life!
5. Cut a piece of twine 15cm long and thread through the hole at the bottom of the bird. Thread a bead on and tie in a knot, this will create a weight. Place the wings on either side of the body. Thread a 25cm piece of jute twine through the holes lining up on the right side and then back through the holes lining up on the left side. Tie firmly to secure but make sure there is enough room for the wings to move.
6. With the wings still aligned, you should see 2 holes that line up 2/3 of the way along the bird’s wings. Thread 3m of jute twine through the holes on the right side. Push the thread back through the holes on the left side. Tie a knot at the loose ends of the twine.
7. Pull the wings apart. Pull both pieces of the jute twine evenly, above the bird’s body. Thread yellow elastic through the middle hole on your bird’s back. Tie to secure. Do not cut the other end of the elastic until step 8.
8. Pull the loose end of the elastic up to the top midpoint of the jute twine. Adjust the end of the elastic until it allows the bird’s body to float with its wings sticking out straight. Cut the elastic and tie to the jute twine to secure.
9. Fold in the ends of the cardboard side pieces 5mm from the straight edge. Use CleverPatch™ Permanent Glue dots to attach three side pieces to each side of the bird’s head.
10. Place the large face piece over the beak and attach with a glue dot. Place the small face piece over the beak and attach with a glue dot. Attach a wiggle eye to either side of the small face piece.
11. Stick 3 tail pieces to either side of the birds tail in any order you like, making sure they sit on top of each other. Your Wooden Black Cockatoo is now ready to fly!

• Armature Wire – 3mm x 50m – 14294 • CleverPatch™ Cardboard – Assorted Colours – A4 – Pack of 100 – 14932 • CleverPatch™ Junior PVA Glue 250ml – 10364 • Bling Trim – Flowers – 2 Metres – 15072 1. Cut a length of armature wire approximately 50cm long. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Bend into a ‘U’ shape, then fold the ends up to create loops.
2. Use the template on page 13 to cut out 4 cardboard flaps. Arrange them around the wire with the larger ones at either end. Fold the edge of the cardboard over the wire and tape in place. This will get covered so it’s ok if it looks messy!
3. Use the template on page 14 to cut out 11 large feathers. Flip the wire collar over so the taped flaps face down and use PVA glue to attach the large feathers around the outside. Overlap them slightly as you go. Allow to dry.
4. Use the template on page 14 to cut out 10 small feathers. Flip the wire collar back over and use PVA glue to attach the small feathers so they sit in the gaps between the large feathers. Allow to dry.

6. Cut a length of bling trim long enough to go around the edge of the collar. Glue in place and allow to dry.
7. Cut 2 lengths of ribbon approximately 50cm each. Tie a ribbon to each of the looped ends of the wire collar and secure with a double knot.
8. Your peacock feather collar is now ready to wear! Place it around your neck, looping the ribbon under your arms and tying them together behind your back!
• Satin Ribbon – Yellow – 25 Metres 17527 • Other Materials Required: Scissors, templates (pages 13-14), glue brush & sticky tape

3. Take a tinsel chenille stem and create a large loop, twisting the ends together to secure. Take a second chenille stem and create a figure 8 shape.
4. Twist the end of the large loop onto the middle of the figure 8 and bend the loops upwards to create the Peacock’s crest. Use a glue dot to secure to the top of the mask, aligning it in the centre.

Use the template on page 11 to create your cicada wings from the Shrink-Me Plastic. Trace the template with a permanent pen to create the outline.
2. Next, use CleverPatch™ Glass & Porcelain Markers to add colour to your wings. You could also use acrylic paints and a fine tip brush to colour the wings. Allow to dry.
3. Cut out the finished wings with scissors. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Use a hole punch to create a hole in the base of each wing.
4. Following the instructions provided within the Shrink-Me Plastic pack, place your wings into the oven to shrink. Adult supervision is recommended.

6. Once the body is moulded, push 3 jump rings into the clay: 1 at the top of the head and 2 in the centre of the back. Make sure they are in nice and tight and the clay is formed back over them. These will be used to attach the keychain and wings later.
7. Bake your polymer clay body for 15-30 minutes at 100-130°C in a standard household oven. The time needed to harden varies depending on the thickness of your completed design.
8. Allow the cicada body to cool before using jump rings to attach a keychain to its head and the wings to its back. Your beautiful cicada keyring is now ready!
