Q: How does Balsa Grow? A: Balsa needs a warm and damp climate with lots of rain and good soil drainage. The trees grow in Papua New Guinea where the timber plantations have been grown since the turn of the century.

Q: How fast does a Balsa tree grow? A: Balsa trees grow extremely quickly. Six months after germination the trees already have trunks of approximately 2.5 cm diameter and about 3-4 metres tall. A tree comes to maturity in three to five years, with a trunk diameter of approximately 80cm and a height of approximately 25 metres. Q: Why is Balsa wood so light? A: The cells of the Balsa tree are large and have a thin lining. The sort of resin holding the cells together is smaller in relation to the resins of other trees. Only about 40% of the volume is weight. Thereby the tree grows quickly, filling the cells with water making the trunk rigid and sturdy. Undried Balsa measured in weight contains about five times more parts of water than of matter. The recognised length of the drying process is at the most 14 days, by then the water content will have reduced by 6-8%. Measured according to its specific weight, Balsa is the strongest type of wood - never heavier yet so much stronger. Q: How is Balsa wood processed? A: The trees are harvested and taken to the saw mill, where the raw Balsa is first rough cut into large boards, then carefully kiln dried, and finally packed into bales for export and further processing.
