Paper Quilling Emu Materials:

• Mini Canvas Panel Art Boards – Pack of 5 – 14471 • Quilling Paper – Pack of 2,500 – 12905 • Quilling Tools – Pack of 50 – 12906 • CleverPatch™ Acrylic Paint Tube – Black – 75ml – 16885 • CleverPatch™ Acrylic Paint Tube – Red – 75ml – 16877 • CleverPatch™ Acrylic Paint Tube – Yellow – 75ml – 16879 • CleverPatch™ Acrylic Paint Tube – White – 75ml – 16886 • Cotton Filters – Pack of 100 – 10217 • CleverPatch™ Junior PVA Glue – 250ml – 10364 • Wiggle Eyes Black – 0.5cm – Pack of 100 – 16476 • Other Materials Required: BLM Template (page 7) & paint brush

1. Paint your canvas black using CleverPatch™ Acrylic Paint. Allow to dry. Use cotton filters and different colours of acrylic paint to dot paint a design onto your canvas. This will be the background for your quilled emu. Allow to dry.

2. Make sure you have a print out of our BLM template on page 7. This will work as a guide when deciding how many coils and what shapes you will need to create the emu.

3. Use the quilling tool to create the paper coils. Place the end of a piece of quilling paper into the slot and begin wrapping the paper around the tool until you have your first coil.

4. Carefully slide the coil off the tool. Using your fingers you can loosen, tighten or bend the paper coil depending on what shape you need for your design. To secure the shape in place, use a small amount of CleverPatch™ Junior PVA Glue to attach the open end of paper to the rest of the shape.

5. To create the emu’s head, use three pieces of black quilling paper. Glue the three pieces together at each end with PVA glue to create one long piece. Allow to dry before using the quilling tool. For the eye use one blue piece of paper. Create another two coils using black quilling paper for the neck.

6. To create bigger body shapes, glue two pieces of light purple quilling paper together. Allow to dry before using the quilling tool. Make sure the coils you create are quite loose as this will allow you to bend the shapes into place.

7. Continue to use our template as a guide when creating shapes.

8. For the emu’s legs, cut four orange pieces of quilling paper in half and roll each piece into a small coil. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.

9. Glue your design to the canvas board. To make it easier to remember where each piece goes, take a picture of your design before you move the pieces. Glue a wiggle eye on top of the blue coil. Allow to dry. Your Emu is now ready to put on display!

1. Paint your entire Wooden Kangaroo with black CleverPatch™ Acrylic Paint. Allow to dry.

8 2. We are using the Aboriginal flag as inspiration of our string art design. Print and cut out the BLM templates (pages 8-17) and tape them together as shown in the diagram on page 8. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.

3. Lay the template over your wooden kangaroo and use as a guide to hammer in nails on each of the dots. Remove the paper once all the nails have been hammered in. Adult supervision is recommended when using a hammer and nails.

4. Beginning in the centre circle, tie yellow soft yarn around one nail in a double knot. Be sure to leave excess yarn as you will use this to tie both ends of the string together once you have finished.

5. Wrap the yarn around the nails in the centre until you are happy with the coverage. When you are finished, tie the end of the yarn to the excess yarn from step 4. Be sure to not let go of the yarn as it will unravel.

6. Repeat steps 4 & 5 for the top and bottom half of your kangaroo with black & red wool. Your String Art Kangaroo is now ready to display for NAIDOC Week!

1. Use the first template (page 18) to create the body pieces for your turtle. Place a piece of ironing paper over your designs to cover each piece completely and iron. Adult supervision is recommended when using an iron.

2. Once the beads have melted together, quickly flip each piece over so they are on the ironing paper. Remove the pegboard and place another piece of ironing paper on top of the designs. Continue to iron the other side.

3. Use the second template (page 19) to create the turtle’s shell. Follow the directions from steps 1 & 2 to iron the beads together. Allow the pieces to cool.

4. Use the numbering on the templates to help you layer the pieces together. Using a glue gun, glue piece 4 on top of piece 3. Next, glue piece 5 to the left fin and piece 6 to the right fin. Adult supervision is recommended when using a glue gun.

5. Glue piece 7 on top of the front of piece 4, this will form the turtle’s head. Then glue piece 9 on top of piece 4, in the centre where the red beads are.

6. Glue piece 8 to piece 7 on the turtle’s head. Then glue piece 10 to piece 9 to create the shell.

7. Finish by gluing piece 11 and then piece 12 on top of piece 10. Allow to dry.

8. Attach a jump ring through the last bead on the shell, then thread on a key ring & chain. Use pliers to secure the jump ring ends together. Adult supervision is recommended when using pliers.
