Aboriginal Flag Quilling Artwork

Materials:

• Quilling Paper – Pack of 2,500 – 12905

• CleverPatch ™ Acrylic Paint Tube – Yellow – 75ml – 16879

• Wooden Skewers – Pack of 100 – 10014

• Tap A Shape Corkboard – 21.5 x 15.5 x 0.9cm – 12370

• Other Materials Required: Paint brushes, ruler, pencil, scissors and paper cup.

1. Using a pencil and ruler, draw a straight line horizontally across the centre of the board. Place a paper cup top side down onto the centre of the line and trace around it. This will be the base of your Aboriginal flag design.

2. Paint the top section of the corkboard using b lack paint. Paint the lower half of the corkboard using r ed paint. Finally, paint the centre circle with yellow paint. Allow to dry.

3. Tightly wrap one end of a piece of quilling paper around the end of your skewer. Keep wrapping until you reach the end. Use a small amount of PVA glue once you have the desired coil size in order to secure the coil. Remove from the skewer once dry. Repeat this process to make more coils using the red, yellow and black quilling paper. Allow to dry.

4. Place your coils onto the corresponding colours of the painted corkboard. You may need to make more coils to fill in any small gaps. Once you are happy with the design, use PVA glue to secure. Allow to dry.

5. Turn over your design and lightly push a tack into the top left-hand corner of the corkboard. Cut a 40cm piece of black yarn and wrap one end around the tack and secure with a knot, then push the entire tack into the board. Repeat this process for the right-hand top corner with the other end of the yarn.

6. Your Aboriginal Flag Quilling Artwork is now ready to hang and display!

Torres Strait Islands Bag Tag

Materials:

• Macramé Cord – 2mm x 275m – 19344

• Pony Beads – Torres Strait Islands Colours – 250g Pack – 19821

• Split Rings – Silver – Pack of 10 – 11186

• Other Materials Required: Scissors and sticky tape.

1. Cut 3 pieces of macramé cord, each measuring 30cm long.

2. Slide a split ring 4-5cm up the length of the 3 strands. Loop the 3 strands around themselves. Pull the strands through the loop to secure the split ring and make a knot. Trim any excess cord.

3. Using sticky tape, secure your split ring onto a stable surface. Begin plaiting your strands by placing the left strand over the top of the middle strand. Place the right strand over the top of the new middle strand. Repeat this plait two more times.

4. Plan your bead pattern by laying them out in a row. We used 7 beads, however you can use as many as you like – it will just mean that your bag tag is longer or shorter.

5. Thread your first bead onto the middle strand of cord. Continue plaiting to make two more plaits. Thread your next bead onto the middle strand. Continue plaiting 2 more plaits. Repeat this process with the remaining beads.

6. After you thread on your last bead and make two more plaits, tie all 3 strands in a knot.

7. Trim the excess cord about 3-4cm below your knot. Pull apart the strands to create a tassel effect.

8. Your Torres Strait Islands Bag Tag is ready to use!

Spinning Tops Game

Materials:

• Whirling Wooden Tops – Pack of 24 – 19597

• CleverPatch™ Acrylic Paint Tubes

Required: Paint brushes and templates (pages 8-9).

See who can spin the longest!

1. You will need at least 2 tops per game. Apply a coat of white paint to your spinning tops. Allow to dry. For the second coat, paint the spinning tops in solid colours of your choice. Allow to dry.

2. Choose one Indigenous symbol from the template on page 8 for each of your spinning tops.

3. We have chosen to use symbols that represent kangaroo tracks, a star, a woman and people sitting around a campsite. Paint each spinning top with your chosen symbol. Allow to dry.

5. Your Spinning Tops and Game Board are now ready! To play, you can start a battle between 2 tops. This is done by spinning the tops on the game board and seeing which top can stay spinning the longest!

4. Print out the template on page 9 onto cardboard and decorate with markers. This will become your game board.

Aboriginal Flag Tie Dye Book Bag

Materials:

• CleverPatch™ Tie Dye Paint – Mid Red – 250ml – 18195

• CleverPatch™ Tie Dye Paint – Black – 250ml – 18202

• CleverPatch™ Tie Dye Paint – Golden Yellow – 250ml – 18197

• Cotton Bags – Large – Pack of 10 – 10790

• Vinyl Gloves – Medium – Pack of 100 – 11234

• Rubber Bands – Size 18 – 100g Pack – 10653

• Other Materials Required: Large resealable bag, water and splash mat

1. Protect your work area with splash mats or scrap paper. To protect your hands, use gloves. Dampen the cotton bag with water.

2. Pinch the centre of the bag and pull it up. Tie a rubber band about 2-3cm down the pinched area. This will be the sun in your design.

3. Separate the bag into two equal halves with another rubber band. The end with the handles is the top half and the other end of the bag is the bottom half.

7. Place the dyed bag into a large plastic resealable bag and refrigerate overnight. After refrigeration, take the dyed bag out of the resealable bag. Allow the cotton bag to air dry completely before removing the remaining rubber band.

8. Rinse the bag under running water to remove excess dye. Allow to air dry fully. To heat set your design, place the bag in a dryer for 5-10 minutes on a hot setting. Alternatively, run an iron over the bag for 5-10 minutes.

4. Dye the bottom half of the bag (side without handles) with red dye. Use plenty of dye and massage into the fabric to get full coverage.

5. Dye the top half of the bag (side with handles) with black dye.

6. Carefully remove the rubber band separating the two halves, then dye the pinched area with yellow dye.

9. Your Aboriginal Flag Tie Dye Book Bag is now ready to use!

Torres Strait Islander Suncatcher

Materials:

• Cardboard – Black – A3 – Pack of 100 – 18299

• CleverPatch™ Cover Paper – White – A4

• Cellophane – Green – 1 Sheet – 17112

• CleverPatch™ Glue Stick – 40g – 13974

• Other Materials Required: Ruler, scissors and a lead pencil.

4. Cut around the inside of the border to create a frame. Be careful not to cut through each corner.

5. Measure and mark 6cm up from the bottom of the frame on each side. Glue a cardboard strip from Step 1 above this mark. Repeat this process from the top edge of the frame.

3. Measure and mark out a border that is 2cm wide around each side of the cardboard.

6. Apply glue to the border around the middle section and place a piece of blue cellophane on top.

7. Apply glue to the borders around the top and bottom sections, then place a piece of green cellophane on each section. Allow to dry.

8. Print out the template on page 10 onto cover paper. Cut out the headdress and star.

9. Flip over your cardboard frame so the glued cellophane is at the back. Glue the headdress and star onto the centre of the middle panel. Allow to dry. Your Torres Strait Islander Suncatcher is now ready to display in your window!

1. On the long edge of the cardboard, measure two strips 1.5cm wide and cut them out.

2. Trim 1cm from the end of each strip. This will help ensure there is no overhang when positioned on the frame.
