3. Trace the template pieces onto coloured foam. We have chosen white, grey and yellow to create the Cockatoo that appears throughout the story! You will need to trace two of each piece. Cut out your foam pieces.

4. Glue the foam Wing Piece 1 to the outer end of a wooden wing as shown. Glue Wing Piece 2 overlapping the first wing piece. Glue Wing Piece 3 on top and allow to dry. Flip the second wing so it mirrors the first and repeat this step with the foam pieces.

5. Glue Body Piece 1 to the back of the body, then Body Piece 2 slightly overlapping the first. Glue the Head Piece to the front of the bird, then the beak in place on the head. Allow to dry.

6. For each wing and the body piece, pierce the foam with a needle through the holes in the wood. Ensure the holes are visable by poking the needle through a few times.

7. Repeat steps 5-6 for the other side of the body. Allow to dry before piercing the foam. Hold the foam firmly with your fingers to stop the foam from lifting off.

8. Glue Tail Piece 1, followed by Tail Piece 2 to the tail of your wooden bird. Allow to dry. Repeat on the other side of the body.

9. Lay a wing flat, foam side up. Place the body on top, aligning the holes so it faces away from the scalloped edge of the wing. Place the second wing foam side down so it aligns with the bottom wing.

10. Thread a 25cm piece of twine through a needle and then through one of the bottom holes on the top wing.

11. Thread the needle and twine through the corresponding hole on the body and other wing. Ensure the wings are aligned on top of each other.

12. Thread the twine back up through the other hole in the wings and body to join the pieces together. Ensure the wings have space to move up and down then tie a double knot to secure. Trim any excess.

13. Thread a 3.1m length of twine onto the needle. With the wings still aligned, thread the twine through one group of holes at the end of the wings, then back through the alternate holes. Pull the twine through so the ends align and tie a knot.

14. Move the wings so they sit at right angles to the body. Pull the long length of twine through to ensure the wings sit evenly.

15. Thread an 80cm length of elastic through the hole in the top, centre of the body. Tie one end close to the body. Tie the other end to the middle of the long twine lengths, ensuring there is a 32cm tail in the elastic.

16. Take the clay bead you created in step 1. Use a 20cm length of twine to attach your weight to the hole on the bottom of the bird’s body.

17. Glue a wiggle eye and the foam feather pieces onto each side to complete your bird’s face. Allow to dry.

18. Your Flying Bird is now ready to take flight!

• Other materials required: Splash mat or scrap paper, a ruler and thumb tacks or hook and loop dots.

1. Lay out a splash mat and your canvas banner. At one end of the banner, make a mark 30cm in from each of the bottom corners.

2. Draw a 1.5m line from each mark. This will become the tree trunk.

3. Draw branches on the top of your tree trunk. Make sure the branches are long and thick so they reach the edge of the canvas.

4. Mix equal parts yellow, red and green fabric paint to create brown. Add white and yellow if it becomes too dark. Paint the trunk with a dry brush to create a bark texture. Allow to dry.

5. Dip a sponge into green and yellow fabric paint and dab it onto the canvas to create leaves. Make sure to cover the branches with some leaves as well! Allow to dry.

6. Measuring from the base of the tree, make horizontal marks at the 20, 80, 130, and 180cm points along the tree trunk. You will hang the banner 20cm from the ground, so label these as 50cm, 100cm, 150cm and 200cm.

7. Iron the banner to remove any wrinkles and to heat set the paint and markers. Pin your chart to a wall using thumb tacks or you can attach with hook and loop dots.

8. Measure yourself against the tree and make a mark. Write your name and the date next to the mark. Keep track of everyone’s height throughout the year with your Growth Chart!
