SUMMER WRAPPED UP Summer is well and truly upon us and to make sure that every beach trip is complete, Koleha is here to provide us with the softest towels around town. The label started by South Australian gal Koby Lee Hage has launched just in time for the scorching summer and it looks (and feels) amazing. The range features 100 percent cotton towels in unique prints that have been inspired by destinations like Beverly Hills, and hand-painted talavera from Mexico. We’d recommend taking it to the next level and going for their luxe Turkish towel range which has been made from natural cotton in Turkey. And they can even double as a sarong, scarf, throw or tablecloth!

MAN ABOUT TOWN

NEWS BY TAMMY TU

After the extremely warm welcome that TY-LR received upon its debut earlier this year, there was always going to be incredible amounts of pressure on its male counterpart, TY-LR Man, to present something equally as special. On top of that, this is fashion conglomerate Australian Fashion Labels’ first foray into menswear after fostering six incredibly popular female brands. Clique Mag had a chat to the man behind the designs, Joshua Davies, to get to know a little bit more about him and what we can expect from the first collection. Before we get stuck into things, tell us a bit about yourself. I’m a New South Welshman who relocated to Adelaide to head up menswear design for a little label we’re calling TY-LR! It’s been an interesting transition from Sydney for sure, but I’ve felt very welcomed by the Australian Fashion Labels (AFL) office and its extended family. It’s not often you’re given creative freedom to launch a premium contemporary label internationally from its conception, but AFL offered that, so I packed my bags!

hile Adelaide College of the Arts does offer a range of fun and engaging photography workshops for everyone from newcomers on digital DSLR to experienced photographers, this summer it is all about short and sharp courses. Classes on offer will include a full day of learning the essential elements of beauty retouching, which will introduce students to the world of digital media. The second course on offer will include a full weekend of highly interactive classes on lighting and composition, where students will be encouraged to bring their own props to create highly stylised tabletop arrangements by playing with texture, mood and setting. These courses will be taught by seasoned freelance photographer and Adelaide College of the Arts lecturer Sofia Calado, whose background in visual arts and photography as well as digital media means she can teach you everything you need to know about creating great images.

ntroductory classes in jewellery have been very popular at Adelaide College of the Arts, with students introduced to the basic skills required to create silver jewellery and move onto a more intermediate class where they create a completely hand-fabricated necklace. This summer, you can take part in intensive workshops running for either one or two days over the weekend. The classes aim to teach a variety of specialty jewellery-making techniques including anodising aluminium and titanium, better known as colouring metal, as well as embossing textures into metal and cloisonné enamelling. The courses are taught by contemporary jeweller and metalsmith John Richardson, and former Adelaide College of the Arts student Meghan O’Rourke whose passion for exploring textures and colouring metals has led to exhibitions here at home as well as at the Museum of Arts & Design in New York City.

Derby Day – Saturday, May 14

Witchery Clutch Rundle Place

Derby Day is one of the most anticipated events on the racing calendar and, of course, it is the home of all things black and white when it comes to fashion. While the state final of Fashion at the Races is being decided at Oaks Day this year, there is no excuse not to be in your best outfits, especially at Derby Day which is known for its high fashion stakes. Race-goers should still be upping their race–wear game by donning their monochromatic best, leaning towards classic cuts and refined elegance.

DIARY This year’s carnival will see the return of The Starting Gate precinct at Adelaide Cup. Last year’s introduction of the social precincnt was incredibly successful, with the who’s who of Adelaide showing up bubbly and at the bets precinct. The trackside location channels old English charm, and features stylish bars, gourmet food and entertainment. Check out some of the photos from earlier this year when the CLIQUE team went to the Adelaide Cup to check out The Starting Gate.

Before any race day - especially when all of Adelaide's most fashionable come out to play - it is important that we think carefully about every detail from pretty dresses to shoes and most importantly, the gorgeous millinery.

"IT’S NOT YOU, IT’S YOUR BROWS" In terms of beauty and grooming, 2015 has definitely been the year of eyebrows. When you do them right, they frame your face and pull your whole beauty look together. From mono-brows to power brows or manscaping your man’s caterpillars, this is one beauty routine you don’t want to get wrong this summer.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SUMMER SNACK? Protein mousse! It is so simple and delicious at the same time. INGREDIENTS • Frozen banana • Half a frozen mango • 1 Medjool date • ¼ cup coconut water • 1 scoop vanilla protein Just blitz everything in a blender and sprinkle with cacao nibs for an extra nutrient boost.

HOW DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN YOUR HEALTH? Two years ago I had a wakeup call. I was one year post-partum, and the thought of becoming the fittest version of myself suddenly hit me. I joined a gym and started training and eating clean – because it doesn’t matter how hard you train if you’re not eating right. Achieving great results without changing nutrition is nearly impossible. It’s all about the perfect combination, with a balanced diet and consistent, proper training.

HOW HAS YOUR LIFE CHANGED SINCE USING SOCIAL MEDIA? It’s safe to say my life has changed since the moment I began my fitness journey. It made me an extremely confident and happy person. That’s why I love sharing tips on Instagram, because I would love for every single girl to feel the same way.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST REALISE YOU WERE MAKING AN IMPACT ON PEOPLE? I started receiving some heartfelt emails from girls who were following me, saying that they’ve totally changed their lifestyle and thanking me for motivating them. It is so rewarding to realise that I am helping people make the hardest first steps towards their happier new lives. And I feel ecstatic when they tag me in their training videos of them doing my circuits. It always puts a sheepish smile on my face.

DO YOU THINK THERE ARE TOO MANY ‘FAD DIETS’ AND ‘QUICK FIXES’?

DO YOU CALL AUSTRALIA HOME NOW?

ALI’S TOP 5 TIPS –for the summer–

We asked Ali for some tips to think about if you want to change your life. 1.

Reflect on what you have achieved in the last 12 months. Did you do everything you wanted to do?

2.

Think about what changes need to be made about the image you put into the market. Is it enough to be taken seriously by decision makers?

3.

Recreate and revitalise your marketing material – forget generic resumes.

WENDY’S STORY: A Kiik Start Success

KiikStart has had over 1600 success stories so let’s hear one of them. When asked about what she got from the program, former KiikStart client Wendy says she benefitted most from the style of the learning and development. “It regenerated my self-esteem, confidence and self-awareness, and more importantly it changed my attitude so I could generate the right opportunities.”

Really identify the style and manner in which you work. People are interested in how you work, not just what you have done. 4.

Brainstorm a list of businesses and people you want to connect with. Start your networking today but before you do, really plan how you want to do this so you stand out from the crowd.

5.

Use the downtime to identify your points of difference. What roles, organisations and environments will allow you to make the best use of these?

TELL HENRY New to Adelaide’s specialty coffee scene, Tell Henry is gaining a cult following for their almost scientific approach to making the perfect brew. Established among industrial neighbours in Kent Town, it’s fitting that Tell Henry has embraced the warehouse aesthetic. The floors have been left as they were, showing signs of the shop’s days as a mechanic’s garage. Next, there’s particleboard used for the café’s fit-out, enhancing the clean lines and geometry of the space. Finally, in an almost sculptural fashion, a floating rebar curtain runs along the spine of the building to separate the café from the creative agency, Rodeo, which has taken up residency in the warehouse. The coffee is why everyone’s here, though. It’s fair to say it’s stellar. Coowner and operator Brad Bonar’s gone to painstaking lengths to make sure of that. The Tell Henry team went to Industry Beans (Melbourne) to get ideas for their fit-out, but inadvertently fell in love with the coffee. Brad’s coffee philosophy is about consistency. Everyone’s got their favourite barista, but in Brad’s world the coffee experience shouldn’t be dictated by the barista working. From the training to the process, Tell Henry has coffee down to a science. Case in point: beans are preweighted and packaged before going through the grinders. One of Brad’s prized pieces is the Mahlkonig grinder, which allows Tell Henry to have a multitude of bean varieties on hand and freshly ground without

“IT’S ALL ABOUT FOOD FOR ME, AND FIRST AND FOREMOST IT’S ALL ABOUT LOCAL PRODUCE. WITH THE ABUNDANCE OF QUALITY LOCAL PRODUCE AROUND ADELAIDE THERE’S ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO LOOK ELSEWHERE.”

Method 1. Line two baking trays with non-stick baking paper. Place the egg whites and salt in a clean, dry bowl. The bowl MUST be clean and dry or the whites won’t whip. Using an electric beater or mix master beat the egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add the sugar one tablespoon at a time, whisking constantly. Whip until the mixture is thick and glossy and all the sugar has dissolved. You can test this by rubbing the meringue mixture between your fingers: if it feels grainy, whip longer.

RECIPE BY DUY DASH

2. Scoop ½ to ¾ cup portions of meringue onto the lined trays. Make a deep hollow in the centre of each meringue using the back of the spoon; this will help later when topping the meringues. Place trays in oven and immediately reduce temperature to 100°C. Bake for between 1 hour 45 minutes and 2 hours (depending on your oven), swapping the trays halfway through cooking. Once cooked, turn the oven off, leaving meringues inside with the door ajar. Cool for 2 hours, or until meringues are completely cool.

PAVLOVA

S

3. While the meringues are cooking and cooling, prepare your toppings. Notes: Whipped coconut results can vary depending on coconut cream brand. I recommend the Spiral Organic Coconut Cream as it delivers consistent results.

ith so many new eateries and bars opening in Adelaide every week now, you can be forgiven for overlooking the most obvious of places for new culinary delights: the Adelaide Central Market. One of their newest

offerings is The Plantation Juice Co., which, despite its name, has much more on offer than juice. Adelaide’s newest health food stall is the brainchild of father/son duo Angelo and Foti Likouras (of Big Table and Penny University fame). As the name suggests, it is a plantation-inspired stall in the Market. It’s hard to miss thanks to its wooden fit-out – executed spectacularly by the boys from East End Studios – and all the fresh fruits and neon signage. The diverse menu offers a list of fresh fruit and vegetable juices using produce straight from the market, and you also have the choice of creating your own. Beyond that, they have delectable smoothie bowls including some of our favourite superfoods like matcha and acai – we recommend the Blueberry Coconut Dream. Take your pick from coconut water refreshments, protein-packed smoothies and even a peanut butter and chocolate chia pudding. You won’t be disappointed with the choices.

hills. You can hire a bike for about 150 KR ($30 AUD) for the weekend, and zooming across the Donning Louises Bro bridge with the wind in your hair is a brilliant experience.

Copenhagen is very much powered on cycling. Public transport is limited to buses and infrequent subways, and taxis are expensive, so you’re best off hiring a bike. The city is flat and every major street has sectioned-off bike lanes for cyclists, so you won’t be huffing up any

While in Copenhagen, you’ll want to set aside some serious dosh for eating. After all, this is the place that birthed the famous restaurant Noma. For a gorgeous breakfast in a trendy contemporary cafe, head to Atelier September on Gothersgade. The portions aren’t enormous but the quality is on point – you’ll find the cafe via the glossy sheepdog sleepily lounging on the front porch. Their signature granola with yoghurt, pistachios, matcha powder, grilled zucchini and basil sounds unusual, but tastes delicious. For something heartier, the poached eggs with thick

tatistically, Denmark is the ‘happiest nation in the world’. This is an accolade that bears truth, as the Danish really know how to live. Their capital city is Copenhagen, nestled between the frosty Scandinavian coasts of Sweden and Norway, and while it may lack the hustle of larger European counterparts (the current population is around 600,000) it certainly doesn’t emit any small-town vibes. Copenhagen is clean, incredibly chic and world-class in its cultural pulse.

Last time I was in Copenhagen I nearly got struck by lightning. True story – I was standing next to a church steeple during a thunderstorm. Some say that this makes you lucky, and there really is something special about Denmark.

seeded rye, wafer turnip and porcini paste are also a treat, washed down with a latte served in an earthenware bowl. Another dining gem is student café Paludan, where you can sit among bookshelves and tuck into leafy salads with raspberries, walnuts and two entire baked goat’s cheeses on top. Everybody behind the counter speaks English, so don’t be afraid to ask for seconds. Once you’ve had your fill, it’s time to venture outside. Near central Nørreport station are the King’s Gardens, which host the 400-year-old Rosenborg Castle. The Crown Jewels are still kept here, but a stroll through the grounds is enough to soak in the atmosphere. Copenhagen is a windy city, so rugging up in the colder months is essential, but from September

to October you can really enjoy the golden splendour of autumn in full swing. If you’ve got a few hours to burn, a ferry ride through the brilliantly-hued harbour and out onto the sea is always good fun too. You may even spot a royal yacht at the docks. A 30-minute train ride north will take to you Louisiana Gallery and Museum, which is located directly on the shore of the Øresund Sound. If you roam the surrounds of the gallery you’ll take in the beautiful sights of the Baltic sea, and even catch a glimpse of Sweden in the distance. Currently, the gallery

hosts the inimitable Yayoi Kasuma’s latest exhibition, In Infinity. You may recognise some of her work from other galleries around the world – twinkling polka dot universes with hundreds of glowing lights.

Work your way through the brewery’s latest small-batches on draught, or for something a little cosier, the grungy vibes of Ørsted Ølbar are great for a weekend tipple. Don’t forget, ‘Cheers!’ in Danish is ‘Skål!’

The city centre of Copenhagen is small, but there’s plenty of nightlife hubbub to be found within its cracks. Culture Box is a popular three-level night club, and regularly hosts international DJs like Jamie xx. Depending on who is playing, it can cost anywhere between 50-80KR for entry. For something more low-key, Mikkeller Bar is a good weeknight locale.

Strolling through Toverhallerne marketplace on a Sunday is a great way to diminish hangovers as you soak in aromas of roasted coffee beans, cheeses, meats and bread. For a quick bite, pick up a Smørrebrød, a slice of thick rye with various toppings and park yourself on a bench. Just delicious, or, as they say in Denmark, ’Lækker!’

GLORIA G

loria Strzelecki’s charming home is proof that you can make a place look stylish and roomy in any amount of space. With

less than 50 square metres to play with, Gloria has arranged her living room, kitchen, laundry, bedroom and bathroom perfectly in essentially two free-flowing spaces. As a curator at the Art Gallery of South Australia, this only seems fitting, but it is Gloria’s ulterior craft that shines throughout the house. “There’s a lot of magical objects in this house,” says Gloria, who studies traditional astrology and is a tarot reader on the side. “I’ve always been interested in esoteric things, hence the crystals and the skulls. The whole idea of memento mori really fascinates me. That everything on this earth is transitory and perishable.” While Gloria assures me to always take newspaper horoscopes with a pinch of salt, she explains how reading cards for people can help guide them, rather than reveal their fate. “Tarot isn’t about figuring out the future, it’s about giving someone a pathway and guidance. People will come to you with a question and the cards help present a way through it.” As expected, Gloria has a great selection of art and photography hung around the place, collected from friends and art shows she previously ran through a contemporary art space. The large woodland print, by her dear friend Tom Riley, is hard to miss as you first walk in, tying together all details of the room; greenery, timber, feathers and skulls. Gloria’s petite living room would take nothing other than sleek Danish Modern furniture, and her beautiful pieces are the cherry on top of this magical home.
