Creative it-couple Jarrad Lee Jackson and Lisa King took to the streets in Adelaide MINI Garage’s new Clubman to show us their favourite spots around town that inspire them. Jarrad is a talented musician and creative director of the clothing line World Wild, and Lisa is the brilliant artist who brings plain walls to life through her vibrant murals. With such a busy and hectic lifestyle, this duo love the ease and space the MINI Clubman provides, perfect for all those musical instruments and paint cans in the back! PHOTOS DUY DASH @ARTOFLISAKING @JARRADLEEJACKSON

most importantly the coffee is great but we also love the whole East End’s vibe and always run into people we know. It also has the best exterior going around with wall art a basketball ring and herb wall. Both Lisa and Jarrad appreciate good sound and the MINI Clubman’s surround sound system offers both high volume and quality. As they drove past the SAHMRI Building, still playing some of Jarrad’s tunes, a slight drizzle began to descend. Normally you would need to lift your hand and turn the windscreen wipers on yourself – too much effort we know – however Jarrad did no such thing. The front windscreen detects when water is on it, and automatically turns on the wipers! This is the stuff Marty McFly witnessed when he time travelled to the future.

Next stop was Capitalsound Studios where Jarrad creates his music. Jarrad loved the boot space of the new MINI Clubman. “It fits all of my instruments inside which would make it super easy for me to attend gigs and shows,” he says. After picking up Jarrad’s gear, the duo headed over to The Maid Hotel, where Lisa is working on her David Bowie mural. As part of the Fringe Street Art Explosion, Lisa has been transforming the back wall of The Maid Hotel with a splash of colour in a fitting David Bowie tribute. Seven days in and counting, Lisa is in her element. She’s no stranger to hard work and large-scale murals as she has giant artwork all over Adelaide, including the Jive and Majestic Minima Hotel murals.

LEO GREENFIELD Adelaide fashion illustrator Leo Greenfield has recently returned back to Adelaide from his travels throughout Europe, following the fashion trends of the world. Leo is a talented artist and specialises in drawing fashionable figures. Working for and collaborating with huge names such as Vogue, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Gucci, he has decided to stay in Australia for a little while to work on some up-coming projects.

PROFILE BY ANNA MAZZONE

Straight outta his new home in Brooklyn, New York, James Hartley recently visited Australia, and in between jobs managed to celebrate his 30th birthday, see friends and family, reunite with Dr Piffle & the Burlap Band to play at Mona Museum in Tasmania, dash to Melbourne, soak in the Adelaide Hills and beaches, and shoot a sneaky editorial for this edition of CLIQUE Mag. It’s amazing he had any spare time to sit down, but we found a moment to chat over Americanos about his life since leaving Adelaide.

On being a tall, skinny, hairy Aussie… I think the novelty idea of an Australian in America has worn off in New York. Almost everyone in the creative industry there is Australian. I definitely don’t think it’s been a point of difference, which is actually half the fun of it. In terms of how I’m seen, I’m just like everyone else to be honest, and I like that anonymity. There are so many people there. I’m tall and skinny and hairy, and I don’t feel like I stand out as much, you kind of just get away with whatever the fuck you want out there. I’m seeing it as a bit of a social experiment, trying to work out how to weasel in. On giving a shit… I moved to New York with a portfolio of the work I’d done and a couple of people I met with were like, “this is great, you can take photos, but what are you into?”. So I’ve spent the biggest part of my first year there focusing on what I give a shit about. On his next book… I put out a book last year and I’m about to from the last one. o name her biggest achievement would be a hard feat considering how much the young model – represented by Pride Models and IMG Worldwide – has achieved. After captivating designers like Jean-Paul Gaultier, Valentino and Karl Lagerfeld, the porcelain skin beauty has walked all the big runways in the fashion week circuit, including Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen and Fendi

It only then seemed natural that she received a highly coveted spot on the Top 50 list released annually by Models.com, sharing the rank with the likes of Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner. This, along with the approval of Anna Wintour herself after gracing the pages of US Vogue, seems to have cemented Madi’s bright future in fashion. And to think, this all started after being discovered by Pride Models as the winner of their International Model search in 2011. The last time we spoke to her, she was on her way back to Paris for the haute couture shows and most recently, she’s been appearing all over social media for the Spring/Summer fashion week season. Through all this though, the one thing that stands out is that she still remains incredibly humble and down-to-earth, chatting to us happily about finally being able to drive and hang out with friends at all the new Adelaide eateries during a brief trip home.

To say that it’s been a whirlwind year for Madison Stubbington is an understatement. The 18-yearold who hails from our fine town has spent the last 12 months taking the fashion world by storm, fronting campaigns for the likes of Gucci and Saint Laurent as well as ruling the international runway.

THE LAB FOOD + COFFEE radiates warmth and greets customers both old and new with a sense of familiarity.

“The name sounds experimental but our menu is far from strange,” café manager Amy Limmer explains. “We experiment with tried and tested flavours and we’re aiming to change the menu seasonally, working with the best produce available.”

Try the extremely tasty (and photogenic) hotcake from the breakfast menu, drizzled in syrup and decorated with a beautiful array of fresh berries. Or stay on the safe side with mushrooms on toast, except it’s served with the best olive and fig tapenade you’ll ever taste. If you’re there for lunch, the gnocchi with parmesan and truffle oil is always a winner as well as their personal take on the corn fritter. That being said, you can’t really go wrong with anything on the menu at The Lab, so pop in and grab a coffee and stay for the great food.

He notes that the biggest culture shift was the way chefs are treated – in Thailand, they’re prescribed what to do and how to execute it. In complete contrast, in Australia, the chef’s ability is prized and creativity is continually encouraged. Prior to Gondola Gondola, Seksan has worked in establishments like Orientai, and Cliché under the guise of renowned chef, Nu Suandokmai. “He [Nu] needed help opening Cliché and I wanted to learn from his experience,” Seksan says. The Thai/Chinese/ Vietnamese specialist was given the opportunity to take on Gondola Gondola as his first head chef role. Seksan recognised the challenges with the restaurant industry, “everything in Australia changes quickly,” he says in relation to food, tastes and trends. There’s the continual need to add, evolve, reinvent and take customers on a new experience. From the first spark of imagination to the final execution he’s entirely embraced the

Next the food. Head Chef Satoshi Kikuchi joining the team with a wealth of experience from Sean’s Kitchen and BLACK by Ezard (The Star, Sydney). Satoshi’s Japanese heritage was absolutely pivotal in creating the diverse menu that can only be described as Asian Fusion. “Fusion cuisine allows Chef Sato to mash traditional cooking with modern plating and modern techniques with traditional recipes which guarantee to create something truly unique and exciting,” Chad says. The menu alone sounds enticing, case in point: Essence of pork with textured egg yolk, asparagus and truffle or the Spanner crab with buttermilk, daikon and salted caramel peanuts. Finishing it all off, the drinks. From its inception, Electra House has lived up to the hype of being on-trend in this department. Ingredidents

Rosewater Rhubarb

Set Buttermilk

– 3 pieces of rhubarb

– 500 ml buttermilk

– 1/2 cup rose water

– 250 ml thickened cream

– 3/4 cup caster sugar

– 2 tsp powdered unflavoured

– 1 cup water

gelatine – 2 tbs caster sugar

Pistachio Crumb

– 3 Cardamom pods, lightly

– ½ heaped cup oats

cracked

– 50 g pistachios unshelled,

– 3/4 tsp Vanilla

roughly chopped

– Pinch of salt

– 2 tbs honey – 50 g melted butter – Pinch of salt

2. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan over medium to high heat bring the cream, cardamom, sugar and vanilla to a simmer. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly before whisking in the buttermilk/gelatine mixture, whisking until the gelatine dissolves. Using a spatula stir in the remaining buttermilk. Strain the mixture through a sieve into a measuring jug. 3. Divide the mixture among six ramekins or glasses, being sure to only fill to around halfway. Cover with cling film and refrigerate until set, approximately 3–4 hours or overnight. 4. Preheat oven to 180°C. 5. Prepare the rhubarb by trimming off the ends and slicing into 2.5cm pieces. 6. Place the sugar and water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Reduce to a simmer. Add the rosewater and rhubarb to the saucepan. Cook until the rhubarb is tender, approximately 5–10minutes. Remove from the heat, set aside to cool. 7. Prepare the pistachio crumb. Combine the melted butter and oats in a bowl. Mix with your hands squeezing the mixture to form little chunks (these will add a nice crunch once the crumb is cooked). Scatter onto a baking tray lined with baking paper and drizzle over the honey. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until golden brown, giving the mixture a stir and adding the pistachio nuts after 10 minutes. Remove crumb from oven and cool. 8. Top the set buttermilk with a generous tablespoon of rhubarb, rosewater syrup and a good helping of the oat and pistachio crumb. 10. Eat!

Notes: This dessert can be prepared entirely the day before if needed, perfect for dinner parties!

WEST THEBARTON BROTHEL PARTY Every now and then Adelaide’s infamously incestuous music scene throws up an honestto-Barnesy supergroup, a seething mass of members from already-established bands coming together to share the love. West Thebarton Brothel Party is one of the rare examples of this trend that manages to stand on its own two – or rather, fourteen – feet and step out from the shadows of the members’ other projects.

Summer Flake – Shoot and Score ♫ For her second Summer Flake album Hello Friends, Stephanie Crase (No Through Road, Batrider) moved away from her lo-fi, home recorded roots to cut an album in someone else’s studio – this time Crayon Fields renaissance man Geoffrey O’Connor. Due in April, expect 90s alt. rock influences, wistful harmonies and a few rip snorter guitar solos. soundcloud.com/summerflake

Caitlin Duff and Nathaniel Morse were introduced to Australian music fans through Adelaide indieprog outfit Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire! They now call Melbourne home, and have been storming the blogosphere with the immaculately knotty pop sound of their debut EP - a lucid dream of St. Vincent, Beach House and Kate Bush. soundcloud.com/wearemanor

ADELAIDE EXPATS DOING US PROUD BY WALTER MARSH

Just quietly, South Australian musicians are killing it all around the world. Superstars like Sia are off penning hits and single handedly bringing face-covering wigs back in style, while on a national level we’ve got folks like Allday conquering the Eastern capitals. But they’re just the tip of the iceberg of our damn fine musical diaspora. Here are just a few of the ex-Adelaide acts who are making waves in their new homes. They might have swum away to bigger ponds, but like a proud primary school teacher we’ll always remember their roots.

JESS KENT Paces – No Chill (feat. Jess Kent) ♫ Cutting her teeth as a Rundle Mall busker with her brother, Jess Kent made the move to Sydney to chase the big time a few years back. It seems to have paid off - her Lily Allen meets MIA debut single Get Down was all over triple j like a rash this summer, and her recent collaboration with Paces looks set to repeat the feat. soundcloud.com/pacesmusic

ANNIE BASS Annie Bass - While I’m Waiting ♫ When she’s not collaborating with Adelaide producer Oisima, Annabel Weston has been carving a new life up in Sydney. The former Archie singer crossed paths with fellow crow eater in exile Matthew Morison, and their hot off the press debut track While I’m Waiting is already turning heads. soundcloud.com/annie-bass

INTERIORS

JESSIE AND HANS A

s a senior research fellow, full-time

student, university lecturer, part-time columnist and occasional DJ, Jessie doesn’t

get much free time to spend at home. But when the opportunity arises, she makes sure its put to good use. “I’m never here, so I try to make it that when I am at home it’s the most relaxing, but simple place. I try to not have clutter around,” she says. Few pieces make up the living area. A modern Danish dining table, a statement lounge chair, vintage bookshelves and an inherited sideboard cabinet. “That was my auntie’s. She had it from the sixties, it was just sitting in her shed and I said that’s just ridiculous.” Jessie has collected her belongings mostly from browsing vintage furniture shops and Gumtree, but it is the pieces that were passed down from her family that fuse her home together and make an impression. Like the marble octagonal trivet from her mum, that you can’t miss in the living room. Jessie says that the key is to be patient. “I think it just takes time. You have to know exactly what you want and be willing to wait for it. And then sometimes be willing to alter it, if you really want something specific.” It’s hard to imagine how the light shades never flourished amongst the white stone walls before Jessie spray-painted them baby blue. When Jessie isn’t teaching third year psychopathology or studying her Masters in Clinical Psychology, she mostly conducts sleep research. “Either locking people up in our lab and keeping them awake, or going out in the field, talking to shift workers and testing them with sleep monitors.” Even her charming sausage dog was named after Dutch astrophysicist, turned sleep researcher Prof. Hans Van Dongen, who Jessie based her PhD thesis on. So when it came to picking a name for her dog six years ago during her studies, Hans was the obvious choice. The petite kitchen sits perfectly equipped for small dinner parties. But don’t let the incidental display of rustic cherry tomatoes fool you. Much like her lovely home, unfortunately Jessie is often too busy to cook. “No. I don’t have the time, the skills or the inclination.”
