JÁVEA CUTS COST OF FITUR STAND BUT KEEPS IMPACT

Jávea is centre of 4th World Holiday Destination by British Tourists (lasprovinciastv.es) According to data collected by Europa Press, with the cooperation of Internet Home Away, the 4th most popular holiday search destination for Brits planning a holiday, is Denia, Jávea and Moraira. Jávea is renowned in Spain as the municipality with a huge population of ‘English’ people.

We are grateful to Jávea Tourism Councillor Toni Miragall, and his Town Hall colleagues for agreeing that the Town Hall Tourist Offices be the principal pick-up points for this Directory.

The 9 other competing top10 holiday destinations all have a much higher tourist image (Tuscany, Nice, Florida and Cannes) than Jávea and her neighbours.

So many hundreds of Madrid residents invested in second-homes in Jávea, that local roads in the midJune to mid-September holiday ‘high season’ are enblazoned with car number plates identifying the whole gamut of Madrid car dealerships.

With respect to holiday destinations in Spain, the Marina Alta (Calpe to Vergel) is in 4th place, behind Malaga, Majorca and Ibiza, all provincial cities. Jávea is the first choice for Madrileños for sea and sunshine - and practicing their English.

More British holidaymakers than ever chose Spain for their July, August and September holidays in 2011. We hope to welcome YOU too.

With almost every home in Spain affected by the ‘Crisis’, Jávea - that relies on tourism and construction industries - is fortunate that Tourism Councillor (Antonio Miragell photo left) and his colleagues chose to lessen the ostentacious nature of their FITUR exhibition space, rather than abandon participation.

This year’s 42 square metre stand will feature two 42-inch TV screens, projecting images of the town that have drawn hundreds of thousands of previous visitors in previous years. The new ‘Face of Jávea’ stand has cost less to build and erect, than the cost of the previous one, for erection alone.

To coincide with FITUR, Jávea has produced new guides to cycle touring, with 10 cycle routes (of varying degrees of difficulty). The new Jávea History guide will be available in eight languages.

Councillors are considering using the FITUR stand later in 2012, in Barcelona, Bilbao, Brussels, Cocentaina, Milan, Utrecht, Valencia and Valladolid, where they will often exhibit as part of the Tour España, Costa Blanca or Valencia Board of Tourism projects.

New ‘Bidi’ smartphone technology is being introduced to give instant info to visitors who might not have collected a ‘Guide’ from a Tourist Centre.

200 year and 400 year Anniversaries in 2012 Jávea celebrates two special anniversaries during 2012: 400 years since the town was officially declared a ‘Villa’, allowing it to develop as a separate municipality independent from Denia; and 200 years since French Napoleonic troops sacked the town, destroying the castle of La Fontana as well as important historical documentation relating to the early history of the town.

Jávea’s Department of Culture will organise a special programme of events to celebrate these important milestones and will hold an extraordinary plenary session on 2 July 2012, to mark the exact date when Jávea received the title of Villa and became an incorporated town 400 years earlier.

Also approved by unanimous decision was the motion by the Bloc Centristes

municipal group to commemorate another episode in local history that occurred 200 years ago during the "French War". The motion refers to the attack on the parish church, convent and private homes on August 28, 1812 by French soldiers, general looting of the town and the execution of several Xabieros, as well as the destruction of the castle of La Fontana, occupied by British troops.

The plenum also agreed to prepare a special programme to commemorate 400 years of local history - that has relied on being passed from generation to generation, almost becoming a legend of sorts - after the historical archives were destroyed.

January 2012 Blood donors A ‘Blood Bank’ is controlled from Alicante and their donor teams visit Jávea every couple of months. There is confusion as to whether Brits can currently donate blood, if they have lived in - or visited - the UK since the discovery of ‘Mad Cow Disease’.

Martyn Standing at the British Consulate in Alicante says there is no prohibition on the Blood Donor website: www.centrotransfusion.san.gva.es A mobile collection team comes to the Insalud in Jávea Town to collect blood from people between 18 and 65 years of age, who weigh at least 50Kgs, but cannot donsate more than 3 or 4 times a year.

Blue buckets The entire shoreline of Alicante Province was marked in 1988 by a chain of upturned ‘blue buckets’ marking a 100m strip from the water’s edge, within which no construction is allowed. You can see examples along Avenida Libertad (the beach road) the most unusual being built into the Western corner of the ‘La Siesta’ restaurant. Buses 150.000 €uros has been allocated by Jávea Town Hall to build a new Bus Station on land that had been reserved for an Auditorium/Theatre, in Avenida Palmera. Like the ‘New Town Hall’ it will prove to be a ‘folly’ if Jávea’s poor and inadequate bus service in is not improved. The elderly in outlying areas who can no longer drive feel disregarded.

There is a subsidised service from Toscamar to the Arenal, Port and Town, that is cheap and reliable, but little else.

If you are a Pensioner there are concessions. Obtain the form from the Services office above Parking El Clot, and hand it - after completing your details, a photo of yourself and the fee, to one of the bus drivers, who will tell you when they will have your ID card with barcode.

Those not of pensionable age can buy a ‘Season Ticket’ for 10 €uros that buys 13,50 €uros of journeys.

Page 6 Cable and Satellite TV Many properties in the South of Jávea are served by underground cable from Balcon al Mar, and some even receive internet by cable. A vast range of radio and TV programmes from throughout the world are available, the cost depending on the package you choose.

Camping and Campsites Jávea has two, both with facilities for static units intended for all-year-round occupation but which welcome tourists and their tents.

Neither are ‘close’ to the beach, but Camping Naranjos is less isolated than Camping Jávea.

The police discourage parking of Campervans on the beach overnight. Groups of Campervans appear from time to time on the Car Park at Av. Tamarits in the Arenal, and only 200m from the beach.

Parking has become much more difficult because drivers from Madrid, who come to the Port for their holidays, leave their cars parked for the length of their stay, reducing availability that will assist shopkeepers.

Rubbish is collected by driver-operated semiautomatic lorries, that upturn street-level or underground bins into the hopper, whether collecting plastic, cardboard and paper or household rubbish. Glass is collected in special ‘dome-shaped’ green containers by a specialist company.

Colossians 3:13 To start the New Year right, you must let go of any old grudges that are weighing you down. Philip Yancey describes forgiveness as an unnatural act and says, 'You don't find dolphins forgiving sharks for eating their play mates. It's a dog-eat-dog world...not a dog-forgivedog world.' Bitterness comes naturally when you've been hurt, whereas, forgiving is supernatural and requires God's enabling grace. But remember, Jesus said, 'If you do not forgive...your Father will not forgive your sin' (Matthew 6:15 NIV).

Humanly speaking, there is not one single reason God should forgive your sins, yet the offenses He pardons you for every day far outweigh anything you will ever be asked to forgive others for.

By forgiving, you change the whole dynamic. You open the door of a prison where you are both prisoner and jailor, setting yourself and the other person free.

Grudges not only isolate you from people who were once friends, they actually shorten your life by producing deadly enzymes that contribute to a host of physical ailments. One man told his counsellor, 'I wish my brother could come to my wedding, but we haven't spoken in years.' The counsellor asked, 'How come?' Pausing, the man replied, 'It sounds ridiculous now, but I don't even remember.' Proverbs 24:16 Until you overcome the fear of failure, you'll be immobilised at the prospect of taking a risk. The important thing to remember when you fail is not to quit. History shows that failure can actually become a bridge to success.

In school, Napoleon was forty-second in a class of forty-three, yet he went on to build an army that conquered much of the world. George Washington lost two-thirds of his military battles, yet against overwhelming odds he won the Revolutionary War and changed American history.

Albert Einstein was such a slow learner that it was suggested he switch studies from physics to some other topic, yet he's considered the father of the atomic age.

When you recall these names you don't remember their failures but their contributions to the world.

Only when you consider your failure to be final, are you finally a failure. Failure is not an event, only an opinion, and as long as it's not your opinion you can come back and succeed. 'A righteous man may fall seven times and rise again.'

In his first inaugural address Franklin Roosevelt told the nation, 'The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.'

Failure is not fatal; you can begin again. But the fear of failure could prove fatal to your goals by keeping you from trying again. After cataloguing every possible scenario that could come against us, such as tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, sword, Paul writes: 'Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us' (Romans 8:37 NKJV).

So the word for you today is - don't be afraid of failure.

Municipal Auditorium Jávea doesn’t have one, though many expected the plot of the ‘old’ Casa de Cultura to increase in size, so a 300-seater could be provided, on land that was far too small.

I am told that the land to the West of the town Insalud and Music Conservatory is ‘ear-marked’ for the project.

Museum The museum originated in 1969 following the creation of a small collection of historical and ethnographic items gathered by youths led by J. B. Soler and J. Celdrán. A few years later, these materials occupied an office of Justice of the Peace and, in 1973 the chapel of St. Anne. In 1975, the City acquired through the efforts of J. Soler Blasco (then Mayor of Jávea) the old palace house of Antoni Banyuls, which since 1977, has housed the current permanent collection. It was in recognition of the main promoter and first director, Juan Bautista Soler Blasco, that the corporation gave the Museum his name. Since 1985 the Curator has been a local archaeologist who manages and advises technically.

Alongside the permanent exhibition rooms are other services: library (with almost four thousand volumes), archeology and ethnography storage and a small restoration laboratory.

Excavations and other tasks of prospecting, listing and protection of the rich historical and ethnographic Jávea continue and are disseminated through exhibitions and Museum publications.

Proverbs 24:16 Star baseball players only hit the ball about three out of every ten times. How do they live with such a high failure rate? By focusing on the law of averages. They know that if they just keep swinging the bat, they'll get on base. In 1952 Roger Bannister ran in the Olympics and finished in fourth place, failing to win any kind of medal. But he refused to quit. Up until this time many experts considered it humanly impossible to run the mile in under four minutes. Yet that was Bannister's goal. And on May 6, 1954, he became the first man to do it. Now runners do it regularly.

What's the point? If you refuse to quit when you fail, you'll ultimately succeed.

You just have to be willing to get back up and keep moving forward. In 1832 Abraham Lincoln was defeated for the State Legislature. In 1833 he failed in business. In 1835 his sweetheart died. In 1836 he had a nervous breakdown.

In 1838 he was defeated for Illinois House Speaker. In 1843 he was defeated for nomination to Congress. In 1854 he was defeated for the U.S. Senate. In 1856 he was defeated for nomination for Vice President. In 1858 he was defeated again in a U.S. Senate race. But today he is considered one of America's greatest presidents. A wise man concluded: 'It's a mistake to suppose that people succeed only through success; they often succeed through failures.' And you're not defeated until the past takes your focus off the future. So don't be afraid of failure.

One proposal was for each of the Tourist Offices to act as the Point-of-Contact, receiving requests “expones” and giving an indication of when to call back for the answer. The ‘Expone’ would be moved from office to office, rather than the applicant needing to do so.

The traditional Townhall in Plaza de Iglesia in the Town centre, was vacated for refurbishment. At the same time new Council Offices were created as part of the El Clot parking scheme, but remain unoccupied because there are no funds to equip and furnish them.

There is a high-speed AVE connection from Valencia to Madrid (93 minutes) and a connecting bus from Jávea and Denia. fGV The Valencia Government provides a coastal train service between Alicante and Denia, but Gata de Gorgos (a 7Km drive away) is the closest it comes to Jávea.

Water Amjasa Drinking (See AMJASA) Desalination Plant For many years water in Jávea had an unacceptably high salt content. Wells were then purchased in the Jalón Valley area as everyone waited for surplus water from the River Ebro to be brought to the Costa Blanca.

When the Socialists came to power in Madrid they cancelled the Ebro project, compensating contractors and again left Jávea with the prospect of salty water.

Newly-elected Jávea councillor Ana Vasbinder is credited with bringing Jávea’s Desalination plant to fruition.

Jávea’s new Government team are discussing water from the salination plant being made available to other towns, to generate income for Jávea.

Visiting Jávea because he’d read so many reports of its friendship and welcome, Michael O’Leary went to a bar and asked for a half-litre of draught Guinness.

The barman nodded and said, “That will be one €uro please, Mr. O’Leary.”

Somewhat taken aback, O'Leary replied, “That's very cheap” and handed over his money.

“Well, we try to stay ahead of the competition” said the barman. “And we serve free Guinness every Wednesday evening from 6 until 8. We have the cheapest Guinness in Spain.”

“That’s remarkable value” Michael comments.

“I see you don't seem to have a glass, so you'll probably need one of ours.

That will be 3 €uros please.”

O'Leary scowled, but paid up. He took his drink and walked towards a seat.

“Ah, you want to sit down?” said the barman.

“That'll be an extra 2 €uros - if you’d pre-booked the seat, and it would have only cost you one. I think you may to be too big for the seat sir, can I ask you to sit in this frame please?”

Michael attempts to sit down but the frame is too small and when he can't squeeze in he complains “Nobody would fit in that little frame!”

“I'm afraid if you can't fit in the frame you'll have to pay an extra surcharge of 10 €uros for your seat sir.”

O'Leary swore to himself, but paid up. “I see that you have brought your laptop with you” added the barman, “and since that wasn't pre-booked either, that will be another 3 €uros.”

O'Leary was so annoyed that he walked back to the bar, slammed his drink on the counter, and yelled, “This is ridiculous, I want to speak to the manager.”

“Ah, I see you want to use the counter” says the barman, “that will be 2 €uros please.” O'Leary's face was red with rage.

“Do you know who I am?”

“Of course I do Mr. O'Leary.”

“I've had enough, What sort of bar is this? I come in for a quiet drink and you treat me like this. I insist on speaking to a manager!”

SECOND INCREASE IN CAPITAL GAINS TAX IN AS MANY YEARS Non-resident property owners in Spain will - from 1st January 2012 - be charged CGT at 21%, following a rise in 2010 from 18% to 19%.

In 2007 the European Union pressured Spain to lower the 35% (15% for residents) to 18%, saying the higher rate was an unfair penalty on non-residents. An increase of 1% in 2010 went comparatively unnoticed.

Spanish residents will also feel the pain, with 21% CGT up to 6,000 €uros, 25% between 6,001 and 24,000 €uros, and 24% on the remainder.

“THANKS” to Helen and Neil at “Butchers’ Block” A surprise phone call to Welcome to Paradise on Christmas Eve, asked if we could “Find good homes for 4 unsold Turkeys?” When we called at Butcher’s Block, we were surprised to see that each bird was 7.6Kgs and, on hearing of Jávea needy families, they added 9 trays of Chipolatas. Spain's Foreign Minister García Margallo visited his “second home” in Jávea for Tres Reyes (Three Kings) and met local councillors.

Jose Manuel García Margallo has owned a second home in Jávea’s Old Town for decades, and told those he met “I have made no secret of the Special Fondness I have for Jávea, which is where I try to visit as often as I can, and have always planned to retire.”

The Minister said he “knows, visits and adores all four seasons of the Jávea year,” and believes the town should have much higher visibility on the international agenda.

Chulvi expressed his “joy and pride” that Javea “should have a resident that is a member of the Spanish Government,” and especially one with a ministry as challenging as the Foreign Office.
