Ένας νομός κυρίως ορεινός και ημιορεινός, με στιβαρούς ορεινούς όγκους, όπως ο Γράμμος, το Βίτσι και το Βόιο, να τον περιβάλλουν. Ο Nομός Καστοριάς, με πρωτεύουσα την ομώνυμη πόλη, απλώνεται στο δυτικό άκρο της Περιφέρειας μεταξύ των Νομών Φλώρινας, Γρεβενών, Κοζάνης και Ιωαννίνων, ενώ στη δυτική πλευρά συνορεύει με την Αλβανία. Στα πεδινά εντοπίζεται και η πλειονότητα των κατοικήσιμων περιοχών, αλλά και οι βιοτεχνικές μονάδες ενασχόλησης με τη γούνα, οι ξενοδοχειακές υπηρεσίες και η γεωργική παραγωγή. Σήμερα, τα σημαντικότερα αστικά κέντρα του νομού είναι η Καστοριά, το Άργος Ορεστικό, το Νεστόριο, οι Μανιάκοι και η Μεσοποταμία.

It is a mostly mountainous and semi-mountainous prefecture surrounded by solid mountain masses, such as Grammos, Vitsi and Voio. The Prefecture of Kastoria, whose capital is the homonymous city, stretches at the western end of the region between the Prefectures of Florina, Grevena, Kozani and Ioannina, while on the western side it borders Albania. The majority of habitable areas is located in the lowlands, as well as the craft units dealing with fur, hotel services and agricultural production. Today, the most important urban centers of the prefecture are Kastoria, Argos Orestiko, Nestorio, Maniakoi and Mesopotamia.

The city is perched deep into the heart of Orestiada. Ο Δήμος Καστοριάς, η «αρχόντισσα» της Δυτικής Μακεδονίας, είναι ένας τόπος που αποπνέει ιστορία και παράδοση αιώνων. Ο τρόπος που καθρεφτίζεται η ομώνυμη πόλη στην πανέμορφη λίμνη της, τα πολύχρωμα καραβάκια που πλέουν στα ήσυχα νερά της, τα μακεδονικά αρχοντικά, οι βυζαντινές εκκλησίες και ο παραλίμνιος δρόμος είναι μερικά μόνο από τα στοιχεία που θα σας γοητεύσουν με την πρώτη ματιά. Με διαρκή ανθρώπινη παρουσία ήδη από το 5.000 π.Χ., η πρωτεύουσα Καστοριά είναι χτισμένη αμφιθεατρικά πάνω στη χερσόνησο που εισχωρεί στην καρδιά της λίμνης Ορεστιάδας, σε υψόμετρο περίπου 640μ, κουρνιάζοντας εκεί υπό το άγρυπνο βλέμμα του Γράμμου και του Βιτσίου. «Λίμνη και πόλη αλληλοκοιτάζονται» σε μια αέναη σχέση μητέρας - κόρης. Αυτή τη σχέση σάς καλεί να ανακαλύψετε το ταξίδι σας στη λιμνοπολιτεία της Καστοριάς. Αντίστοιχο σκηνικό στα βόρεια και στη συνοικία Απόζαρι, όπου τα όμορφα νεοκλασικά συνυπάρχουν με τα νεότερα κτίρια. The Municipality of Kastoria, the so-called «Lordess of Western Macedonia», is a land full of history and centuries of tradition. The reflection of the homonymous city in its beautiful lake, the colorful boats sailing on its tranquil waters, the mansions of the Macedonian architecture, the Byzantine churches, and the lakeside road are just some of the elements that will charm you at the first glance.

With its continuous human presence since 5,000 B.C., the capital Kastoria is built amphitheatrically on the peninsula that penetrates into the heart of Lake Orestiada, at an altitude of about 630m, under the watchful eye of the Grammos and Vitsi mountains. "The lake and the city affectionately look at each other" as if in an eternal mother-daughter bond. This bond invites you on a trip to explore the lake city of Kastoria.

You are greeted by the willows and sycamores leaning over the lake’s waters, the pondering pensioners on the benches, the fishermen with their rods, and more than 150 species of birds nesting on its shores. A long lakeside promenade is necessary: if you are a romantic soul, you can go on foot or take your bike; if you are in a hurry, you can take a quick tour in your car. Έντονες είναι και οι γεύσεις στην Καστοριά: σαρμάδες με λάχανο τουρσί, κεφτέδες με σάλτσα μακάλο (σάλτσα με αλεύρι, ντομάτα και σκόρδο), αρμιόπιτες (πίτες με λάχανο τουρσί), άγρια μανιτάρια στο τηγάνι, ρυζόπιτες, φασόλια γίγαντες σε κάθε εκδοχή. Και φυσικά γριβάδι ταβάς (σαν πλακί, με ντομάτα και πιπεριές), ψάρι με σάλτσα από σκόρδο και καρύδι που αποκαλείται «γκαρούφα» ή «σαλτσιστό». Από το τραπέζι δεν θα μπορούσαν να λείπουν καταπληκτικά τσίπουρα, απαραίτητο συνοδευτικό για τις κρύες μέρες του χειμώνα. Από τους ανοιξιάτικους περιπάτους στις όχθες της λίμνης, τις βαρκάδες και τις καλοκαιρινές δραστηριότητες στα νερά της μέχρι τα χειμερινά σπορ στο Χιονοδρομικό Κέντρο του Βιτσίου, κάθε εποχή έχει τη γοητεία της εδώ. Δημοφιλές ραντεβού τα Ραγκουτσάρια τον Ιανουάριο, η πρώτη αποκριάτικη γιορτή του χρόνου, με μπόλικο βαλκανικό χρώμα από τις τσαμπούνες και τα μπουλούκια στους δρόμους.

Moving from the south to the north beach, you will make two stops: at the Dragon Cave with its uttering beauty, and at the Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa with its impressive frescoes. Your visit to the lakeshore settlement of Dispilio, just outside the city, will take you back in time, to the Neolithic Age.

When visiting the Byzantine Museum and the region’s countless churches, such as the church of Agios Stefanos and Panagia Koumbelidiki, you are taking a journey into the past. Your walk will end at Prophet Elias with its remarkable, panoramic view.

Within the urban fabric, you will find yourself lost in the cobblestone streets and the mansions of the furriers in the Doltso district and its stone-paved square. Built in the 17th and 18th centuries by artisans from Epirus, they radiate the city’s bright past. The Doltso mansions also house the Museums of Folklore, Costume and Macedonian Struggle. A similar setting can be found in the north in the Apozari district, where enchanting neoclassical buildings coexist with newer constructions.

The matching of the Byzantine churches next to modern buildings, and old mansions next to alternative cafés, constructs a perplexing yet intriguing setting. The unaltered prestige and tradition co-exist with the city’s modern image; bars, restaurants, taverns, and cafés next to the lake and at the city center set the tone for entertainment promising vivid moments throughout the day.

Kastoria’s cuisine also offers some strong flavors: pickled cabbage rolls (sarmades), meatballs with makalo sauce (a sauce with flour, tomato and garlic), armiopites (pies with pickled cabbage), wild mushrooms in the pan, rice pies, giant beans in every possible version. And of course the “grivadi tavas” (tomato and peppers in tomato sauce), fish with garlic and walnut sauce called “garoufa” or “saltsisto”. The table would not be full without the amazing tsipouro, a necessary drink to accompany the cold winter days.

Every season is fascinating, from spring walks on the shores of the lake to boating and summer activities on its waters to winter sports at the Vitsi Ski Resort. “Ragoutsaria” is a popular day in January – it is the first carnival-like festivity of the year, filled with Balkan energy from the tsambounes instruments and the crowds (“bouloukia”) on the streets.

The magnificent natural landscape, the lakeside mansions, the stone cobblestone streets, the Byzantine monuments, the feasts with their Dionysian character, and the fur coats revive picturesque, postcard-like images. The visitor will see all this, feel it, experience it, and leave with the promise to return here, to the home of the fur-makers.
