History

Over the course of its centuries-long history, the Byzantine aristocratic city of Kastoria experienced dozens of attacks by enemies coveting its riches and culture. Built next to Lake Orestiada, it seems to have been a well-organized center ever since the Neolithic era. This is attested by the excavations that brought to light the lake settlement of Dispilio and the Neolithic settlement of Avgi.

Η ιστορία της Καστοριάς χάνεται στα βάθη των αιώνων με τους Ρωμαίους να την πολιορκούν και να την καταλαμβάνουν, τους Βούλγαρους και τους Νορμανδούς να κάνουν το ίδιο. Τούρκοι και Σέρβοι διεκδίκη- σαν την πόλη αντίστοιχα, χωρίς ωστόσο κανείς από όλους αυτούς τους λαούς να αποτινάξει από πάνω της το θρησκευτικό και ελληνικό στοιχείο, το οποίο έγινε ακόμη πιο έντονο στα χρόνια της Νεότερης Ιστορίας.

The history of Kastoria is lost in the depths of the centuries and reemerges when Romans besieged and occupied it, as did the Bulgarians and the Normands after them. Turks and Serbs claimed the city respectively, but none of them managed to discard the religious and Greek elements, which became even stronger during the years of Modern History.
