WHAT'S INSIDE

Christmas Pinoy Style Christmas for us Filipinos starts as soon as the “BER” months begin, September. It is always highlighted by the glitz and glamour of the season. The bright lights, traffic, and carefully wrapped gifts. Bazaars would be filled with people even up to the wee hours of Christmas Eve just to find that perfect something for the special someone, may it be a good friend, a family member, or a significant other. What sets Filipino Christmas apart from the rest is its ability to gather people at an instant. People make peace and forget old mishaps. May it be because of the juicy steamed ham at the center of the table for Noche Buena or the melodies of carols? Christmas in the Philippines creates a certain sense of home. For a moment, everyone escapes the bitterness of reality and feels warm and loved. It’s the time when family reunions usually take place with all the kids running around as if they were being chased down by a monster of sort. The shrill screams and laughter that starts to irritate you, not to mention the constant pushing and senseless questions. But when one toddler randomly comes up to you and motions for you to carry him, everything fades into thin air. One starts off doubting if he had a good time in such an affair and ends up having a smile on his face at the end of the day. Your cousins show up shortly and you catch up with them. The payabangan stories kick in. As soon as the new batch of fried chicken is served, everything stops. Everyone’s main concern is to get at least a piece, leave one with nothing and end up sharing everything else. Christmas is a festive spectacle in general. The karaoke machine would be turned up to the maximum volume for the worst singer in the family to enjoy. You end up laughing at every flat or missed note. Everyone participates in games we’ve all enjoyed in our elementary years and takes pride in bringing home the most number of candies. There would be dancing as well, endless stories, and loud laughs over anything. You start to look around with a smile on your face and say, the beauty of this commemoration, especially for the Filipinos, lie in the simple details. When all of these things settle down, when the last of the many presents have been wrapped, given, and opened, we find the most meaningful gift that we’ve always had: our family.

T

his is the season where almost all of us gain weight, the season where we forget about dieting and don't mind much about those bellies getting bigger. Who could ever resist the cheese filled pizza and the bags of chocolates from gifts, do I have to mention the food served during Christmas parties and alcoholic beverages available on all gatherings we attend to? Those irresistible sweets in and out of the refrigerator?Yes they are just too many that no one would ever notice if someone stole a cookie from the cookie jar! We just don't have much of that "self control" and we easily give in to those cravings specially to those calorie filled food that would cause too much bloating and destroy our hard earned figure that we have been working on for the whole year.Yes it would be impossible to say that you're on a diet and just watch your family and friends binge on all those mouth watering dishes while you sit there quietly torturing yourself. During these season you don't really have to refrain from what these health conscious people refer to as "sinful food".

Holiday Fat Busters

Check out this fat busting tips for the holiday: 1. Don't focus on the carbs. During parties try to avoid consuming food high in carbohydrates but rather focus on food high in protein like meat, pork, chicken and other dairies. Best explanation is you burn more calories when your body breaks down protein rather than carbohydrates, which are easily absorbed, and turns to fat.

2. Eat fruits before each meal. This will help you feel full faster than just starting your meal on an empty stomach. Plus fruits help breakdown fats because your body absorbs the nutrients from the fruit faster. By the time you eat your meal your intestines are already coated by nutrients thus protecting your immune system too.

3. Drink that tea hot. Don't forget to drink hot tea after every meal, not just any cold beverages. Do you remember what happens to oil when you place it in cold water? Yes it turns to grease and you don't want that grease to block 8

DECEMBER 2012

6. Choose red wine over beer. When alcoholic beverages are served beer will always have a higher calorie content that is why red wine is better not just because it has lower calories but also red wine is rich in resveratrol a polyphenol found in grapes that becomes highly concentrated 4. Workout before the party. Burn fats before loading up new fats.Yes it is better during the wine making process. Resveratrol is a cardio-protective to have your workout before indulging on a pig out feast. Plus it is common that compound that has antioxidant properties, and is said to protect the when we are full we tend to get lazy to go to the gym, because of the heavy and blood vessels in the heart. Some studies also show that red wine in moderation bloated feeling we are experiencing we may raise good cholesterol. choose to skip the workout and just go home and sleep. your arteries right? So always keep it a habit to sip on that hot tea after every meal, tea also helps in speeding up your metabolism.

5. Drink water, lots of water. And please don't make softdrinks your substitute for water! Before munching on anything drink water, and while you are eating keep on drinking water, your body will be needing it to help digest food. Plus you will feel full faster if you keep loading up on water. Remember that water has zero calories that's why you should not be afraid to drink in large amounts. CLUB

7. Learn to push your plate and move away from the table. It is always better to stand and walk around while mingling with friends this will help you digest food easier and staying away from the table gives you less access to nibble on any food found on the table. Makeup

BEAUTY CALL

BY AKEMI KOBAYASHI AND NIKI MEDINA

Here are 2 ways for all Christmas & New Year's Eve party makeup goers! A fuchsia and black look is perfect for a Christmas gathering party with friends and love ones

Here's a more glamorous, simple and pretty look for New Year's Eve.

1

1

Using a blending brush apply a black (matte) eyeshadow to your crease to give some depth then blend it.

Using a flat brush dab a gold shimmer eyeshadow all over the lid.

2

After putting a black eyeshadow to your crease get your flat brush and dab a hot pink or fuchsia (matte) eyeshadow to your lid and softly blend it with the black.

Now get your blending brush and start putting a cranberry eyeshadow to the outer part of your eyes towards your crease (you can winged it if you want to). Make sure to blend it with the gold shade to make it look more even.

3

Finish it off by putting some natural false eyelashes and tons of mascara for more spicy look.

4

For the lips use your favorite bright pink or fuschia lipstick that matches your eyes, until the inner rim.

2

You can also add false eyelashes after applying mascara if you want your eyes to stand out more.

3

For the lips just use any nude or light pink lipstick so it won't look too much.

4

Following these simple steps will help you look effortlessly stunning this holiday season. Have fun!

HUNK OF THE MONTH

C

lub Filipina's Hunk of the Month is an in-demand TV commercial and print ad model back in the Philippines, whose handsome face is regularly featured in several TV commercials and whose toned body is plastered on billboards and magazines all over. Chosen to endorse not just local but also international brands, this half Filipino, half Japanese hunk is currently one of Manila's most sought-after male models. Let's get to meet the the man every girl wants to be on her side - Jiro Shirakawa. Jiro has been catapulted into modeling stardom after emerging victorious in the 2009 Mossimo Bikini Summit competition. Since then, the 23-year old hunk has become the face that everyone is familiar with and most of us can relate to. He can be your brother, your best friend, he can even be the nice and oh so cute next door neighbor who is always there to help... or if you're lucky enough he can be your boyfriend. This is one of the reasons why Jiro can get into any advertising or acting role. Discovered by his talent manager, Aldwin Chiongbian during a fashion show casting, Jiro's natural charm and endearing personality made him a favorite amongst Filipino designers, which landed him several high fashion ramp shows. Encouraged by his family, friends and manager (who introduced Jiro to one of Manila's top modeling agency) He started attending castings for TV commercials and soon after was endorsing top brands everywhere. For Jiro,

modeling is a serious occupation and much like any other job it requires keeping a professional mindset, always being on time (Japanese Time) and working hard. These and a strong faith in God are Jiro's essentials to succeeding in his chosen field of modeling. Jiro is also keen on maintaining his physique by regularly going to the gym and keeping conscious of what he eats (Filipino and Japanese foods are his favorites) Being healthy for him is not just a choice but something that you must do to maintain not just a good body but also a good mind. During his down time Jiro reads The Bible and on his free time, like any regular guy, plays video games and basketball. His current passion though are MOTORBIKES which keeps him busy on nonworking days For Jiro, surrounding yourself with honest, down to earth and hard working people is very important in life. He dreams someday in the near future to be a respected businessman, to give his children a good education and have them grow up in a loving relationship with God. Family is the most important aspect of life for Jiro, that's why he is aiming to go back again to visit Japan and see his sister (Christine Tanaka who lives in Nagano) after several years of not seeing her. A HEALTHY and HAPPY Family is what Jiro expects from life, after all,Jiro is that guy that everyone is familiar with and can relate to. The guy that simply everybody loves.

After 4 years since returning back to Japan, it happened. Would that be a precursor that I am leaving Japan anytime soon? One August weekend, I found myself buying hiking gears and stuff for a scheduled climb on August 31. It wasn’t a one-year old plan. The preparation was too short as it was decided right away. The day came and there was no turning back. The group decided to take the easiest route to the summit – the Yoshida Trail, based on some research and Mt.Fuji-climb related blogs. And since all of us, except one, were first timers, we thought that it was the best way to heaven. Everyone was all smiles at the start of trek. But that changes with each step towards the peak of Fuji-san which is at 3,776 m above sea level. The trails also change from time to time, it must due to climatic revolution. Our pace wasn't as fast compared to the other climbers but glad we did it slowly as we were able to enjoy and appreciate nature's masterpieces flashing before our eyes. Mother Nature can be a show-off at times. I always told them to do it slowly but surely until I fell down on my knees even with that motto in mind. This is one of my favorite shots during our climb taken at station 7, around 1800H. We started climbing at 1330H and were at top of Japan few minutes before midnight. The sign at the 5th station says that it the summit could be reached in approximately 7 hours from the starting point but it took us 12 hours. I’ll take all the blame why it took us so long to be at the summit since I’m the slowest. We stayed at the top of the mountain freezing. It was so cold that the four of us were already having flashbacks of our childhood years. Luckily

or unluckily to us, the peak started to warm up with the presence of other hikers. All of a sudden it was pandemonium. I can’t imagine lots were crazy enough to hike for more than 11 hours just to wait and see the sunrise? Believe me though that it was one hell of an experience. And I am using hell here in a positive way. The sunrise was so stunning that I forgot to click my camera. I was there just to seize the moment. I even forgot that I was freezing. As the sun appeared, applause and gasps filled the air. Japanese are really that appreciative. Few more steps would bring us to heaven already. Fare would be approximately free especially if you take a wrong step. As much as we wanted to stay at the top, we need to go down to avoid the predicted downpour. Going down seems easy but it’s not. I stumbled for a few times and hoped that I the next time I open my eyes I am already inside of the bus. One of my friends asked me if I feel like an accomplished mountaineer after reaching the peak of Japan’s tallest mountain. I replied that mountaineer, no. Photographer, yes. I kept on protecting my gadgets more than myself. It was definitely a great experience. But am I tempted to climb Mt. Fuji again? NO. Mt. Everest, you are next.

Skateboarding is often associated to be a male sport but who says that it is really just for guys? Maiko Okuaki, a 24-year old Japanese-Filipino female skater proves this notion to be wrong. She can skate with the best of the men and do what they can't do‌ be sexy while having fun! Born on December 14, 1988, in Sampaloc, Manila to a Filipina mother and Japanese father Maiko has been skating since she was 14. She has joined and won numerous skateboarding competitions both in the Philippines and Japan, even earning her sponsorship from Element Japan. Thus, certainly proving the world that the sport isn't for boys alone. She spent her formative years in the Philippines before moving back to Japan to attend college. But before finishing her degree at University of Maryland University College, Maiko decided to return back to Philippines to pursue her modeling career. She then continued her studies at the University of the East, majoring in Mass Media where she was discovered by modeling agents. She now travels back and forth Japan and Philippines to manage her commitments as well as to spend time with her family and friends. One would think that in order to participate in this extreme and adrenaline infused maledominated sport, a girl would need to be a "tomboy but Maiko is a very good example that this is not true. But on the other hand, for her, a skater girl also need not do "girly" routine of riding a pink skateboard with flowery stickers. She wants to inspire other women skateboarders to simply work hard, progress, and be active in the sport. Just get in the zone, push yourself harder and skate better. Aside from skating and modeling, Maiko is also presently working as an English teacher here in Japan. She also loves singing and she can play the piano and guitar as well. Oh, didn't we tell you she is a total babe?

4. Nganga pose

- natutunan ko ito kay mamush Elyu. From the word "nganga" na ang ibig sabihin ay ibuka ang bibig hanggang mag lock jaw. Minsan din itong tinatawag na ngala-ngala pose.
