WHAT'S INSIDE The True Beauty And Greatness
That Is Filipino.
The season of fall has often been very symbolic of an impending change. With the gradient of brown, red, and orange leaves rustling along with the wind, one can marvel at the beauty it brings: signaling a great future ahead. Since time immemorial, it has captured the very essence of beauty that lies from that very impetus of variation. More often than not, the initiative to bring forth change lies in the most unexpected places. It catches us by surprise, either through the form of a simple hobby or preference. Once we spot it, we find ourselves letting the very urge drive us to satisfy it. This very much reflects how this magazine started. Coming from the Philippines with no knowledge on Japan’s language and culture, most of us had to adapt and try to make this place as closer to home as possible.

But like any journey, it never is easy. Autumn’s beauty in itself is a premonition of what’s to come. Winter soon follows this euphoric season, hinting that the road towards spring and summer will be a rough patch: tough, cold, and ruthless.

Especially if you’re a stranger in a foreign land: jumpstarting your dreams wouldn’t be as easy as singing your nursery rhymes way back in preschool. It would be a lot harder in terms of opportunities, judgments, scrutiny, and sympathy. More people would tend to pull you down and wait for you to fail.

But this doesn’t mean that achieving our dreams in a foreign land is impossible. For this month of November, Club Filipina features people and their stories of triumph over slim chances of success over discrimination. Through their tales of determination, passion, persistence, and dedication, amidst adversity, one can only surmise that their very own stories in trying to break in are no different. Dreams themselves serve as lights that would guide everyone towards their respective goals: a spectacle that would lead to the realization of its innate possibility. Recognition of dreams signals the start of autumn, forcing ourselves to shed off our fears and doubts that hinder us from achieving: encouraging an atmosphere geared towards self discovery and betterment. Only then can we be one step closer to making our aspirations little realities. Listening to this month’s Pinoy Entrepreneur - Cristy Jabonete’s touching tale of conquering the Soba business (a traditional Japanese cuisine) as a Filipino, we can hear the rustling of the leaves in everything that she did to attain what she has now. Through the progression of her tale, we can see how the cold and chilling realities of the world almost stopped her. But she persisted and found the warmth that melted the snowflakes away. As we also focus on the beauty of siblings Reynayln and Jeffrey Yamanouchi, both JaPinoys still trying out their luck in the field of modeling in a seemingly foreign land that is theirs – the Philippines, one can easily see that in the obstacle they are treading, there is beauty for there is hope. At Club Filipina, we seek to give recognition to all Filipinos in Japan. Given this goal, we deem it fit to share these stories of success and images of beauty to further recognize the true talent that is Filipino and to further inspire other Filipinos to take a shot at their dreams too, no matter how glaring it may seem to be for one main reason: they have what it takes. It is with great hope that as we release this issue, we are able to do just that and more as we embrace the true beauty and greatness that is Filipino.

Live Longer, Fight Stress!
In this modern day where almost all your time is devoted to work, family, partying and drinking like there is no tomorrow, health can take its toll. Stress shoots up and next thing you know you have all kinds of health problem from simple skin breakout to the more serious hypertension. Now let us start to figure out what causes stress. You work 8-10 hours a day thinking of how to make both meets end from electric and water bills, tuition fees of your children, house mortgage, car loans and other monthly bills that piles up day after day, With all these in mind exercise and diet is not in your list which makes you more and more stressed.
1. Drink a cup of green tea, which contains polyphenols, a powerful antioxidant.
8. Have a deep tissue massage, it promotes blood flow and supplies nutrients to your muscle tissue.
10. And the most important of all is exercise, yes exercise can relieve stress because it pumps up your endorphins, (endorphins are a group of endogenous peptides found especially in the brain that bind chiefly to opiate receptors and produce some pharmacological effects like those of opiates.)

Stress doesn't have to ruin your life, try to take away all things that causes stress and you will live a healthier, happier and longer life.

May tumambling, may nag-split, may nagsayaw, may nagdrama at ang iba sa kanila ay nagsalita ng wikang hapon. AMAZING!! At habang nakikinig ako sa kanilang pagtatanghal, narinig ko ang isa sa kanila na humingi ng "lapad" dun sa bisitang hapon na agad namang pinagbigyan at inabutan ng walang halong pag-aalinlangan. Doon ko nakita kung paano mag-agawan ang mga nasa entablado para makuha ang papel na tinatawag nilang lapad. Buong akala ko ay may basbas ito galing kay doraemon para sila ay maging tunay na babae kaya nagkukumahog silang makuha ito. Mali pala ako noon. Pasensya na, tao lang. Ano nga ba ang "lapad"? Nakakain ba ito? Ito ba yung bote ng emperador brandy na nabibili sa mga suking tindahan? Ang mga tanong na ganyan ang sumagi sa aking isipan nung mga panahong nakikipag "PBB Teens" ang mga "beki" sa bisitang hapon. Pero sa mga taong nakatira, nakapagtrabaho, nakabisita, at nakapagliwaliw sa japan, alam na alam nila ang ibig sabihin kapag may nagsasabi ng salitang "lapad". Sa pamamagitan ng pagsasaliksik sa komiks at pagbuklat ng mga pahina buhat sa aklat ng kalokohan este karunungan, masasabi natin na ang salitang "LAPAD" sa ingles ay "BROAD" o "WIDE". Kung papansinin ninyo ang pera ng mga hapon, ang lapad (o 10,000 yen) ay "malapad" kung ikukumpara sa iba pang de-papel na pera ng kanilang bansa (1,000 yen at 5,000 yen). Pero ang kapuna-puna ay ang "malapad" na noo ng taong nakaimprenta sa "lapad". Marahil ay dito nagsimula ang alamat ng "lapad", sa noo. Masasabi rin natin na kapag may "lapad" ka (kung gagamit ka ng abacus para mag-compute at mag convert ng yen to peso, ay mahigit kumulang na 5,000 pesosesoses) ay mayaman ka dahil "lumalapad" ang bulsa sa dami ng lapad na nakuha galing sa "sacho" or "boss". Winner! Hindi natin maikakaila na ang "lapad" ang naging pamantayan ng kaperahan nating mga pinoy na nagtatrabaho at naninirahan dito sa japan. Laging isipin na mainam na ipunin natin ang mga lapad na ito para sa ating kinabukasan. STRANDed IN JAPAN
G
rowing up in a tropical country and watching movies and TV shows featuring yellow and orange leaves sparked my interest about autumn. With all honesty, I didn’t see myself working abroad while I was still studying, well, even in my early working years. I used to work in a manufacturing company but after the owner decided to cease its operation, I was hired as a cadet engineer for an engineering design firm. And this gave me an idea about working outside of the Philippines and Japan was the very first country I've been to. I've been in Japan for a total of 7 years and is a bit familiar with the changes in weather so as the breeze gets colder with occasional rains wetting Tokyo, it could only mean one thing, autumn is coming. Just like spring, autumn is a highlyanticipated season. One interesting tradition of sort I observe here in Japan is the bonding moment of families, friends, expats during this season. Lots of people flock in the park, have picnic and observe how the foliage shed off its hues, or how they drop from the limbs or how the wind swirls the fallen leaves. Kyoto, Ibaraki, Hakone are few of the most visited destinations in Japan during this season. I am not sure if other countries have these autumn gatherings as I grow up from a tropical country where only rainy and sunny are the known seasons. But for me, I find it fascinating to be with your friends and family in a park watching a “natural” show. Or just maybe because Japanese never run out of ideas. Though sometimes, others would say that autumn is a bit depressing, with all the trees stripped off their

clothes, but if you look closely, it’s not that depressing after all. At first glance, it feels like it but a few more breathes later, it will turn out to be a source of hope as you will be looking for spring and you can picture out how will it be painted with greens and bloom few months later.

Personally, I find autumn to be very poetic that it draws an inspiration or two. It could squeeze out dried up creative juices of anyone. For me, it is a perfect time to reflect and if only this time could be frozen for 365 days, so be it. I have no objection, as I want to be inspired for the whole year.

ailing from a Japanese-Filipino lineage, this twenty-year old stunner epitomizes and espouses on racial equality through a magnificent display of wit, class, beauty, and talent. Having been born to a Japanese father and a Filipino mother, Reynalyn was heavily influenced by both cultures. Though she has lived most of her life in Japan, she remained a Filipina by heart through the upbringing of her mother. Given her Filipino descent, she stood out wherever she went. But it never always worked to her advantage. Like anyone of foreign blood in a country which highly regards its own identity, she experienced discrimination of sorts: from the subtle to the absurd. But she took everything in/with a stride. Being disciplined and passionate as she is, Reynalyn persevered. The very force that intended to pull her down catapulted her even more to go further. Through sheer dedication, she finished her studies in classical ballet and later on became a sought

after instructor. Add to that being a famous supermodel for the very looks that she was singled out for. She flew back to the Philippines to study and improve on her Filipino and English language skills. During her stay, her beauty did not go unnoticed as she joined the Mutya ng Pilipinas, a beauty pageant that aims to promote “Beauty Tourism” in the Philippines. Reynalyn became the first “Japinay” (half Filipino/Japanese) contestant and one of the top 10 contenders of this prestigious pageant. Reynalyn is proud of her Filipino heritage and plans to promote Philippine Tourism in Japan and share with the Japanese the beauty and splendor of the Philippines. At twenty-two, she has her whole life ahead of her. With an unprecedented dexterity in classical ballet, a sash for her beauty and wit, and indomitable spirit to promote the beauty that is the Philippines; Reynalyn has proven that one is solely responsible for making a name for herself: free of any bias from origin or race.

PINOY ENTREPRENEUR
L
iving and working in Japan for more than a decade does immerse one to various Japanese cuisines. Cristy Jabonete, a typical Filipino and proud Ilongga from Bago City, Negros Occidental, was no exception. In her stay, she found herself loving to eat her favorite Japanese food for lunch: the SOBA. And from that affinity to the dish sprung forth her passion that gave her life a new direction. It was in 2000 at Hatoyama Soba when she met the master chef who introduced her to the finer points of soba making business. Her passion on learning encouraged her to voluntarily work with no salary for 6 months as an apprentice for a soba master chef. There, she familiarized herself in soba making and the ways to run the business. After serving the company she has worked for in seven years, Cristy decided to leave to try her luck on putting up her own business. In Sakado, Saitama Cristy established a small Philippine Snack Bar called “Mabuhay” But this business she has to put to a close for her heart is more into soba business. In 2008, Cristy and master chef Mr. Norihiko Yanai (her friend and business partner) decided to put up their own business venture in the center of the historical landmark, Koedo-Kawagoe - Karazuriki, also known as “furoi no machi” a traditional architecture zone where the Japanese took

Today, all her efforts and persistence paid off. Kyouka Soba Ku, owned and managed by Cristy and her business partner Mr.Yanai, is the preferred destination for soba in the Karazuriki area. Cristy has proven her worth to be known as the "soba chef" and entrepreneur at large. In 2009, Cristy’s restaurant, Kyouka Soba Ku was given recognition and won the prestigious “award” given to outstanding restaurants in Japan for their delicious handmade soba noodles. Looking back, Cristy still cannot fathom how her simple craving for eating Soba has led her to a fruitful business venture and how her taste buds have given pride to the Philippine Flag of Entrepreneurship in the land of the rising sun in the process. EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS

eld for two days on the 3rd Saturday and Sunday of October, the Kawagoe Festival is KoedoKawagoe ’s liveliest event of the year. Famed for its Kurazukuri (traditional architecture) zone, this city is one of the Kanto Region’s foremost sightseeing spots, and it attracts large numbers of visitors each year. The Kawagoe Festival's strongest feature is the festival float event which reproduces the ’Edo Tenka Matsuri’ festival. Spectacular festival floats carrying exquisitely crafted dolls are pulled around the center of KoedoKawagoe’s landmark Kurazukuri (traditional architecture) Zone.

Spectators will be overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the many festival floats as they pass by each other when meeting at an intersection. The Kawagoe Festival’s biggest highlight: ‘Hikkawase’ As they face each other, the several festival floats compete with each other in a hayashi performance (a traditional Japanese orchestra comprised of flutes, drums, handbells and dancing), cheered on by the excited voices of festival-goers holding aloft paper lanterns. The excitement reaches its climax with the evening ‘Hikkawase’. The Kawagoe Festival has developed both by maintaining a history of over 360 years as an invaluable town festival that preserves the style and elegance of the Edo "Tenka Matsuri", as well as by adding its own unique Kawagoe features. ng bansang PILIPINAS ay mayroong 7,100 na isla at may magagandang tanawin at sa bawat lugar may mga ibat-ibang tradisyon o kulturang sinusunod. Isang na dito ang kagandahan ng CORDILLERA (Payaw) sa lugar ng Norteng Luzon na may kaaya-ayang tanawin na makikita ang matataas na bundok na lagpas 1,500meter at 2,000 taon history at tinatawag itong Hagdang Palayan (as known as the world heritage rice terrace and stairway to heaven) Isa ito sa popular na dinadayo ng mga torista dahil sa presko at malamig na klima buong taon.Sakop nito ang bayan ng BAGUIO CITY. Dito makikita ang mga natitira at hindi nagbabagong makalumang tradisyon at uri ng pamumuhay ng mga tao. Nakasanayan na ng mga tao dito na gumamit na likas na yaman upang mabuhay tulad ng pagtatanim ng gulay, frutas at palay para magkaroon ng makain sa araw-araw. At mga kasuotan na kanilang kinamulatan. Pero taon-taon lumalaki ang bilang ng mga taong na ngingibang bansa para kumita ng pera at unti-unti madami sa kanila ay nakakalimot. Isang grupo ang nais na ipakilala at gustong ipadama na ang tradisyon ay hindi mawawala at mananatili khit manlang sa pamamagitan ng musika na ginagamitan ng lumang instrument ng mga katutubo ng CORDILLERA. Ang grupo ng “duo edeya” isa sa myembro nito at haponesa si Yamashita Ayaka isa sya sa sumusuporta para protektahan ang nawawalang tradisyon. Dahil gusto rin nila malaman ang tradisyonal na ito para sa mga hapon,gumawa sila ng isang event sa Shibuya, Tokyo nung nakaraang buwan. Pinakita nila dito ang mga kakaibang lumang instrumentong gawa lamang sa CORDILLERA. Si Edgar Banasan isa sa katutubong musikero sa CORDILLERA at sya rin ang gumagawa ng makalumang instrumento.Tinayo nila ang music group “duo edeya” last year sa Baguio at ngayon gusto na nila ipakilala ang makalumang at kakaibang musika ng Pilipinas sa pamamagitan ang tugtugin na ginawa nila. Ilang beses na din tumututog ang kanilang grupo sa ibang lugar sa Pilipinas at gusto din nila ipamahagi ang ganitong pagtatanghal dito sa bansang hapon kaya't atin antabayanan at sa pamamagitan nito maramdaman natin ang kagandahan ng "HIMIG NG CORDILLERA" 26 NOVEMBER 2012

７１００以上の島々からなるフィリピンは、 様々な民族からなる多民族国家 で、 それぞれの地域で独特の文化や風習が受け継がれてきました。 しかし、 時 代と共にそうした民族性は次第に薄れてきている現実もあります。 ルソン島北部にある、 標高１５００メートルを超える山々からなるコーディリエ ラ地方。 常夏フィリピンの中でも比較的涼しく、 避暑地として、 そして、 世界遺産 に登録された棚田郡をはじめとする絶景も楽しめる観光地としても人気のエ リアです。 その中心となるバギオ市には、 学生も多く、 緑豊かでのどかな街並みが広がっ ていて、 継承されてきた山岳民族の文化・風習もいまだ残されています。 かつては、 精霊を信じ、 自然と共生する形で、 独自の伝統文化や風習を守りな がら、 自給自足の生活を営んできた地域ですが、 時代の流れと共に、 その様態 は大きく変わり始めています。 生活環境の変化、 そして、 都市や海外への出稼ぎ が増えたことで、 若い世代へそうした伝統文化が継承されることなく、 消えよう としているのです。 そんな中、 そうした歴史と伝統のある先人による知恵や表現を、 これからの時 代においても大切に守っていこうという熱い想いを胸に、 日本とフィリピンの文 化交流を始めたふたりのアーティストがいます。 “アートを通して無形文化を守る”をミッションに活動する音楽ユニット 「duo edaya」 は、 フィリピンの伝統文化の継承に熱意を抱き活動する山下彩香さん と、 コーディリエラの山岳民族に伝わる特有の楽器を作る数少ない職人で、 演 奏家でもあるエドガー・バナサンさんによって、 昨年春にバギオで結成されまし た。 そして、 コーディリエラに伝わるの無形文化を守っていくため、 学術調査か ら音楽やアートによる表現など、 多岐に渡り活動を展開しています。 また、 そうしたムーブメントを日本でも知ってもらうため、 先日、 東京・渋谷でフ ィリピン民族楽器演奏会が開催されました。 先住民たちから受け継がれてきた 美しい造形美からなる民族楽器が独特の奏法によって披露され、 幻想的な雰 囲気の中、 コーディリエラの風景を思い浮かばせる、 清らかで心地よい音色を 響かせていました。 「ユニークなデザインで手作りされた楽器を通して、 先住民の伝統を伝えてい きたい。 」 と山下さんは想いを込めます。 会場内に展示された、 日本ではあまり 目にすることのない、 繊細な技術で作り出された竹楽器の数々に来場者は目を 留め興味を抱いていました。 昨年の名古屋公演に続き、 ３度目の来日となったエドガーさんも、 「自分が愛し 誇りに思う民族音楽を、 様々な表現活動を通してもっと広く伝えていきたい。 」 と今後の活動に情熱をかけているようでした。 また、 これからもフィリピンで、 そして、 日本でもショーやワークショップが展開 されていくようですので、 今後の動きにも注目していきたいですね。 ぜひ、 みなさ んもこれをきっかけにフィリピンの歴史や文化、 社会環境に目を向けてみては いかがでしょうか。 PINOY iKONEKでは、 「きっと、 もっと、 いいこと―いっぱい。 フィリピン。 」 をテ ーマに、 フィリピンの魅力を伝えながら、 日本とのフィリピンの懸け橋として活 躍する方々を数珠繋ぎしながらご紹介していきます。 次回もお楽しみに！ Photography and Wordds by: Shunsuke Kuroki
