A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
As we put winter behind us and look forward to spring, traditionally a time of renewal and rebirth – we are embrace this season of change revived optimism While many of you have enjoyed some downtime during the colder months, we have been busy with the following updates and initiatives, looking ahead to a bright future.
I am delighted to start by highlighting our ongoing partnership with Breakthrough Mental Health Foundation, which has been instrumental in providing Mental Health First Aid Training sessions The June session was a tremendous success, and the upcoming August session is already fully booked We are committed to continuing these valuable training opportunities to support mental health awareness and well-being within our clubs
We are also excited to announce the recommencement of our Club Development Program, starting with a Governance 101 webinar scheduled for this month and a Riverland Roadshow in September We are committed to growing this program with you all and look forward to showcasing it in the Mid North and South East regions later this year
Additionally, we are gearing up for the annual Clubs SA Clubs & Community Awards night in October A special thank you to all our clubs who submitted nominations. We look forward to meeting you during the judging process and celebrating your achievements on the night
I am also pleased to announce the appointment of Kerrie Hazelhurst as our new Club Safe Officer, replacing Tracey Cochrane
Kerrie brings with her a wealth of experience in club and hotel management, having demonstrated exceptional skills in gaming operations, regulatory compliance, and training coordination Her extensive background includes significant interaction with regulatory bodies and a deep understanding of daily operations within gaming environments, making her transition to Club Safe highly anticipated and exciting Kerrie commenced in her role on Monday, July 29th Please join me in welcoming Kerrie Hazelhurst to our team
I would also like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude for the 17 years of service that Tracey Cochrane has contributed to Club Safe and our industry as a whole Tracey's dedication, hard work, and invaluable contributions have been instrumental in the success of Club Safe’s work in harm minimisation and early prevention During her tenure, Tracey has made significant strides in promoting responsible gambling and has been a key figure on the National Association for Gambling Studies (NAGS) committee, where her work has been widely recognised and appreciated

Longtime Clubs SA Member, Sandy Creek Golf Club is celebrating its 120 years in 2024
For those that have not had the pleasure of visiting, the Club is positioned on a beautiful site near Cockatoo Valley between Gawler and Lyndoch
Club President Susan has kindly provided some history and information as well as some fantastic photos capturing the hard work and efforts contributed by the invaluable team of volunteers
Sandy Creek Golf Club, in the southern Barossa, is celebrating 120 years of operation in 2024 One of the earliest golf clubs in South Australia, the first site was in the town of Gawler, hence the original name of Gawler Golf Club After moving sites a number of times in the following half century, the course as it stands now was opened in 1961 as a 9 hole scrapes course By 1974, the course had transitioned to an 18-hole greens golf course
The sandbelt course is situated on gently undulating land with extensive views over the Barossa Valley from many parts of the course Flowering gums and other native trees and shrubs provide a home for a large variety of birds and the many kangaroos which can be seen relaxing on and off the fairways
The Club’s trading name was changed from Gawler Golf Club to Sandy Creek Golf Club – Barossa Valley in 2015 to eliminate confusion as to the Club’s location and to capitalise on its location within the Barossa Valley
In recent years, Sandy Creek Golf Club has transitioned to becoming almost a fully volunteer-run golf club
Drawing on the expertise of a wide range of members has seen the Club deliver some impressive course improvements Golf Australia’s 2021/2022 participation report found that more Australians played “off-course” golf than on-course Sandy Creek has capitalised on this by the creation of a 40 metre long artificially turfed driving range, seeing a large increase in visitor and member use This will be further supported in the coming weeks with the arrival of a new larger capacity range ball dispenser with payWave facilities An extensive practice chipping green has recently been installed and work has started on a new practice putting green to enhance the off-course offerings and support the school groups regularly visiting the Club
Significant work has been carried out by the volunteers on the irrigation system to ensure effective and efficient watering of the course, so important in the dry South Australian climate This has included replacement and relocation of sprinklers Consideration has also been given to watering regimes for both the fairways and greens
Sponsor engagement has been a key aim for the Club and the number of sponsors has grown significantly The focus has been on the bi-directional relationship between sponsor and club, ensuring that both can benefit to the fullest extent from the partnership
Sandy Creek Golf Club is celebrating its 120 years of existence with a dinner on Friday 16th August at the Club, followed by the Sandy Creek Open on the weekend of 17th-18th August. The tournament is open to men, women and juniors, with over $5000 in prizes to be won. Bookings can be made for the dinner here and for the tournament here.

I had the pleasure of meeting Denis recently who is not only on the committee at Jamestown Racing Club but a Life Member too
He has sat on the committee for more than 40 years which is a fantastic achievement and a great reflection of the commitment of volunteers in South Australia The Club hosts the annual Jamestown Racing Cup Day each October and together with the Jamestown Show, it makes for a wonderful weekend of fun and entertainment in a warm family atmosphere
The Club has a long, rich history dating as far back as 1875 Denis pointed me to a manuscript written by dedicated Club member, Keith Hope which beautifully preserves this in great detail, in the National Library of Australia For those with an interest, it can be viewed below and is well worth a read:

SA Energy Market Update
SA Electricity Futures prices are easing, due to consistent generator reliability this month Despite seasonal lows in solar and wind production, the market has benefited from stable baseload supply without major outages However, prices now reflect higher risk premiums due to the updated National Gas Outlook, which predicts more frequent gas supply shortfalls from 2025 to 2028 This is especially significant in South Australia, which relies solely on gas for baseload supply
