It was with great pleasure I recently delivered our worthy winner, Dennis Johnson, his Volunteer of the Year 2024 Award at his home from home, the Port Football and Community Club.
Dennis has had a long attachment to the Club, beginning in his playing days in the ‘70s, progressing into the ‘80s when he coached and later on the committee.
Dennis held the role of Chairman from 1989 to 1995 but more recently, he has taken on the responsibility of guiding the Club from its worst financial loss in its history to today when the Port Football and Community Club is a far happier and healthier position. It is now considered by many to be the stand out venue for lunches with many repeat customers The menu certainly had done its job on the day I was there, with plenty of diners enjoying their meals
As with any of the Club volunteers I have met over the years, Dennis was very modest and keen to introduce the other invaluable members of the volunteer team and give them recognition also What a cheerful, fun group they were too!
Manager Amy expressed much gratitude for all their hard work and devotion to helping with the successful operating of the Club
There will be a more detailed article on Dennis and the Club in this year ’ s Clublink, so keep an eye out for it in December!
Thank you John Fulbrook MP
A heartfelt thank you to John Fulbrook MP for taking the opportunity in Parliament to congratulate the winners and nominees of the 2024 Clubs SA Clubs and Community Awards! We appreciate his shout-out and for sharing the incredible impact of South Australia’s licensed and unlicensed clubs within the community Clubs are a tremendous asset to our state, delivering invaluable support to local communities, and we ’ re grateful for John’s ongoing support and advocacy for Clubs in SA.
Recently the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing (ORSR) has announced the opening and re-opening of a number of major grants for sporting and recreational clubs
With cost-of-living pressures a constant issue, grants can be a great way for funding to be obtained and these new grants as well as where others can be found for sporting and non-sporting clubs will be detailed below.
ACTIVE CLUB PROGRAM
Eligible organisations can apply for funding for programs and equipment through the Active Club Program (ACP) The aim of the ACP is to support active recreation, sport and recreational fishing clubs to enhance the programs and services they provide within the South Australian community
Eligible applicants with less than 100 members can receive a maximum grant of $1,500 and for applicants with 100 or more members the maximum grant will be $3,000.
Further information is available here and Applications close Midday on 26 November 2024.
COMMUNITY RECREATION AND SPORT FACILITIES PROGRAM
This program provides access to funding for the development of sustainable, functional, inclusive and fitfor-purpose active recreation and sport facilities that meet the current and future needs of the South Australian community
A total budget of $5,664,000 of funding will be available and allocated across various funding request amounts with applicants able to request a maximum of $750,000 in funding Eligible projects include construction or upgrade of an active recreation and sport facility or multi-use sports hub and modifications to existing facilities to meet environmental or WHS regulations
Interested clubs however need to be aware that substantial co-contributions are required Those requesting funding over $500,000 must contribute a minimum of 66% in funding towards the project e g if $750,000 was requested then the total project cost would have to be $2.25 million or more. Those requesting funding $500,000 and under have to contribute a minimum of 50% in funding towards the project unless one of the following is evidenced: The predominant outcome is the upgrade or construction of a trail; or
The facility is physically located within a geographical catchment area (suburb) that is experiencing socio-economic disadvantage
Applications that meet one of the above circumstances must still contribute a minimum of 25% in funding toward the project
Further information is available here and Applications close Midday on 27 November 2024.

Sporting clubs can access funding for dedicated facilities, improvements to facilities, equipment and programs for girls’ and women ’ s sport in South Australia. There are separate pools of funding for football (soccer) clubs and other sports and this round has a total pool of $7,549,900 in funding allocated across the following streams:
Further information is available here and Applications close on 27 November 2024.
Clubs as not for profits can often be reliant on funding and one of the ways in which a club can seek to boost its funding is via grants Grants can be a great potential resource for clubs to assist with improving such things as their workforce, systems or facilities

Clubs SA Welcomes South Australian Amateur Soccer League
A warm Clubs SA welcome to new member, the South Australian Amateur Soccer League (SAASL)
The SAASL has a long and proud history, dating back to 1965 It has been built on fairness, inclusivity and a genuine love of the game of soccer From its humble beginnings, the league has expanded and strengthened to become the major organisation body for nonprofessional soccer in South Australia and is the State’s largest management body for Senior Level Amateur Soccer
Since 1974, every highlight has been recorded in their yearbooks. For anyone with a keen history of soccer in SA, you can read the yearbooks HERE>>
Joining initially as a single entity, the Association is soon to start building new, much larger premises at their base in Grange The new facility will provide exciting opportunities and this is where Clubs SA will be needed to assist in both the liquor licensing side of the business and governance
We look forward to working with the team

Smoking Policy
To assist with meeting smoking legislation requirements and making it clear to staff and members in particular where smoking is allowed a club could implement a smoking policy This can include specifying to staff that they are only authorised to smoke in designated smoking areas during set meal breaks
A template policy is available on the Clubs SA members only site on the Workplace Relations: Policies, Fact Sheets & Agreements page
Members who have further queries about this can contact Clubs SA on 8290 2000
