In the wake of recent events that have enhanced our city and region, I hope we can all take a collective breath and reflect on the vibrancy and unity of our community and how delightful it was to see some of our most prestigious clubs showcased to a state, national, and international audience.
First off, the Adelaide Cup at Morphettville Race Course in March, was a testament to our member the SA Jockey Club or SAJC. It was an amazing spectacle to behold, and a pleasure to see the new Wolf Blass ‘The Man’ Event Centre at Morphettville Race Course catering to racing enthusiasts, elevating the experience to new heights.
The centre is available for bookings 365 days a year, suitable for intimate gatherings through to large-scale occasions and welcomes groups from the local community, greater Adelaide, intrastate, interstate, and overseas visitors, delivering vibrant, successful and sustainable experiences for all.
From racing to the AFL, let’s revisit the remarkable impact of the Gather Round festivities.
According to recent data, the economic revenue generated during this period saw a significant uptick, with businesses across various sectors benefiting from increased foot traffic and patronage and in particular the accommodation sector.
This reaffirms Adelaide’s status as a vibrant community hub and underscores the invaluable role that events play in driving economic growth and prosperity throughout the city and regions.
Next, let’s turn our attention to the ‘new kid in town’ The LIV Golf event, which took place at the picturesque Grange Golf Club.
On the third and final day of the LIV Golf Adelaide competition, Premier Peter Malinauskas remarked on the event’s impressive scale, stating, “The difference in the event compared to last year was the size and the scale.” He continued by expressing gratitude, saying, “I’m just so grateful. I mean, people have travelled from afar to be here in South Australia this weekend, and we’ve got the eyes of the nation on us. What’s not to like.”
Figures reveal that a record-breaking 94,000 individuals descended on The Grange Golf Club across the three-day event, with over 40 per cent of ticket buyers from out of state and attendees from more than 30 different countries.
Premier Malinauskas highlighted the event’s economic impact, stating, “The economic benefit is substantial, and all the focus, understandably, is on what it’s doing in the hospitality sector.”
Congratulations to the Grange Golf Club Board, Management, Staff and Volunteers in delivering a truly remarkable event that will continue to grow and grow.
As we reflect on these amazing events and acknowledge the challenges faced by our industry, I feel it is important to reflect and honour the solemn significance of ANZAC Day. This sacred day of remembrance serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by our brave servicemen and women, past, present and those still to come.
It was heartening to see so many young families come together to pay tribute to our veterans and support our local RSLs. We look forward to sharing more amazing stories from across our RSL’s over the coming weeks and especially look forward to celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the Henley and Grange RSL.
In addition to these momentous occasions, I am delighted to announce the successful launch of our Club Development Program’s face-to-face workshops.
These workshops are designed to equip our clubs with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in an ever-changing landscape. As partners in our community’s social fabric, it is imperative that we remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring the sustainability of our clubs for generations to come.
A big thank you to our Clubs SA members who received a warm welcome attending our recent Club Governance 101 Workshops at Hectorville Sports & Community Club - the 2023 Club of the Year - Medium Winner and Club Marion for the great venue and also a 2023 Clubs SA Clubs and Community Award Winner.
These workshops were delivered by our amazing partner Kate McPhee from Liquorice Allsorts Online, whose knowledge and sharp wit, ensured these were very interactive sessions, with some great discussions between all.
Despite the recent success of these events, it is important that we acknowledge the challenges facing Clubs and the Hospitality Industry in general, including labour shortages, inflation, and the escalating cost of living. →
Recent news from South Australia indicates that hospitality businesses, including restaurants and clubs, are grappling with these issues, leading to closures and increased competition for discretionary spending.
We understand it can be a constant struggle for clubs to remain competitive in the industry, placing further pressure and demand on our amazing staff and volunteers. Operationally, there’s a growing emphasis on adopting sustainable business practices and exploring new avenues to generate revenue, as evidenced on a large scale at Morphettville Race Course and Grange Golf Club respectively. For smaller Clubs this can take the following form:
◊ Community Alliances
◊ Diversified Events and Entertainment
◊ Food and Beverage Innovation
◊ Membership Programs
◊ Digital Marketing and Online Presence
◊ Function and Venue Hire
◊ Corporate Sponsorships and Partnerships
Please reach out to us if you would like some assistance in understanding how these initiatives can assist your club remain viable and vibrant into the future.
In other responses to these challenges, we are actively collaborating with industry partners, associations, and government entities, to ensure that positive messaging about clubs and our industry is promoted, highlighting their importance to the community and the broader economy.
This collaboration strengthens our collective voice as we continue advocating for support and understanding from stakeholders as we navigate these challenging times effectively on your behalf.
Furthermore, we are proud to represent our members and the hospitality sector through our participation in the South Australian Skills Commission. This invaluable platform allows us to engage directly with industry stakeholders and contribute to workforce priorities, ensuring that our sector’s skills needs are accurately represented and addressed. There will be more updates to come from Rhys Braybrook our Workplace Relations and Policy Manager, over the coming months.
Finally, I am excited to inform you that nominations are now open for our annual awards. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognise the outstanding contributions of individuals and clubs within our community. I encourage each and every one of you to submit your nominations and help us celebrate the achievements that make our community truly exceptional.
Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication to our shared vision of a vibrant and resilient community. Together, we will continue to thrive and prosper.

A woman from Paralowie has become South Australia’s biggest Keno winner so far in 2024 after pocketing a $2.26 million Keno Spot 10 last month.
The South Australian scored the $2,269,061.10 Keno Spot 10 jackpot in draw 240403 217, drawn Wednesday 3 April 2024.
The long-time player described the winning moment as magical.
“I’m still in a bit of shock. I’m still pinching myself. I can’t believe it has happened,” she said.
“I’ve been one number off a couple of times –maybe three or four times. I feel as though this win has been brewing for quite some time!
“I’ve played the same Keno numbers for a while now. My favourite numbers are 30 and 74.
“I’ve always enjoyed Keno! I think I’ve treated myself to tickets into the draws for eight years.”
When asked about her plans as a newly minted multi-millionaire, the happy Adelaidean shared she couldn’t wait to help her nearest and dearest, as well as some charities close to her heart.
“I want to buy a house and go on a holiday,” she shared.
“I’m also a grandmother of six grandchildren; a big family. I’ll definitely be helping my family, especially my daughter who has gone through a rough time.
“I’d love to donate to some charities too. Probably Save the Children. I want to help those who are suffering.”

There are moments that transcend time, echoing through generations as reminders of sacrifice, courage, and resilience. ANZAC Day stands as a solemn tribute to such moments, a day etched in the collective memory of Australians and New Zealanders, honouring the legacy of those who served and sacrificed in times of war and conflict.
At the heart of ANZAC Day lies the spirit of remembrance, a solemn vow to never forget the sacrifices of the brave men and women who have defended our freedoms and upheld the values we hold dear. And central to the commemoration of ANZAC Day is the Returned and Services League (RSL), an institution steeped in tradition and dedicated to honouring the service and sacrifice of our veterans.
The RSL plays a vital role in preserving the memory of ANZAC Day and ensuring that its significance is passed down from generation to generation. Through ceremonies, memorials, and community events, the RSL provides a platform for collective remembrance, allowing us to pay tribute to those who have served and to reflect on the impact of war on our society.
But beyond its role in commemoration, the RSL serves as a beacon of support for veterans and their families, providing assistance, advocacy, and camaraderie to those who have served our nation. It is a testament to the enduring bond forged in the crucible of conflict, a bond that transcends time and space, uniting veterans in a shared sense of duty and sacrifice.
It becomes imperative to impart its traditions and significance to the next generation, ensuring that the legacy of our veterans lives on. Engaging the younger generation in ANZAC Day commemorations not only fosters a sense of respect and gratitude but also instills a deeper appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy today.
The RSL Clubs throughout South Australia worked tirelessly with their communities to commemorate ANZAC Day in many different ways. Dawn services, commemorative guernsey’s worn by players at the local football games, local school participation, two-up at the local RSL along with a beer or two, and always a good sausage sizzle to bring together the community to honour the legacy of our veterans. The RSL understands the importance of passing on the traditions of ANZAC Day to the next generation, ensuring that the flame of remembrance continues to burn bright for years to come.

National Volunteer Week: 20-26 May 2024
In a world brimming with bustling schedules and relentless demands, there exists a group of unsung heroes who selflessly give their time, effort, and compassion to make a difference in their communities. National Volunteer Week, serves as a poignant reminder to celebrate and recognise these individuals whose contributions are immeasurable.
This year, as we navigate through the challenges and triumphs of life, National Volunteer Week takes on an even deeper significance. It is a time to reflect on the power of unity, kindness, and collective action. It is a moment to express gratitude to those who embody the spirit of service.
At the heart of this celebration lies the acknowledgment of the invaluable role volunteers play in ensuring successful operations of Clubs and in turn, shaping society.
From lending a helping hand at their local Club to mentoring the next generation, volunteers touch countless lives with their generosity and empathy.
In the realm of Clubs, volunteers are the lifeblood that keeps the engine of progress running smoothly. Whether it’s organising events, leading initiatives, or providing support behind the scenes, volunteers are the driving force behind the success of Clubs. Their dedication and passion infuse vitality into every project, fostering a sense of camaraderie and purpose among members.
Recognising the significance of volunteers within clubs, it becomes imperative to celebrate their contributions wholeheartedly. There are countless ways to honor and appreciate these remarkable individuals during National Volunteer Week and beyond.
Here are a few ideas to inspire your club’s celebration:
Volunteer Appreciation Event: Host a special gathering or luncheon to honour volunteers and express gratitude for their dedication. Incorporate heartfelt speeches, testimonials, and personalized tokens of appreciation to make them feel valued and cherished.
Spotlight Stories: Shine a spotlight on individual volunteers by sharing their inspiring stories and accomplishments with the club community. Highlight their impact and contributions, showcasing the difference they have made in the lives of others.
Social Media Campaign: Launch a social media campaign dedicated to celebrating volunteers, using hashtags such as #VolunteerAppreciation or #ThankYouVolunteers. Encourage members to share their experiences and express gratitude for the volunteers who have touched their lives.
Volunteer Awards: Establish volunteer awards within your Club to recognise outstanding contributions in categories such as leadership, innovation, and community impact. Hold a ceremony to present these awards and celebrate the recipients’ achievements.
As we embark on this journey of gratitude and celebration, it’s essential to remember that the impact of volunteers extends far beyond accolades and recognition. Their acts of kindness ripple through society, fostering compassion, resilience, and hope for a brighter future.
In the spirit of honouring volunteers, nominations for the Volunteer of the Year Award at the Clubs SA Clubs and Community Awards 2024 are now open. This prestigious award seeks to recognise individuals who have demonstrated exemplary commitment to volunteering, embodying the values of service, integrity, and compassion. It’s an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the remarkable contributions of volunteers and celebrate their unwavering dedication to making a difference.
As National Volunteer Week approaches, let us come together to celebrate the heart of giving and express gratitude to the volunteers within Clubs. Their acts of kindness inspires us all to strive for a more inclusive, empathetic, and connected society, where the spirit of service empowers us all.
Clubs are reminded about a number of updates and changes in relation to tax that have occurred recently.
Firstly not-for-profits (NFP’s) who have an active ABN and self-assess as being income tax exempt will now be required to lodge an annual self-review return with the ATO. This is a change from previous years where NFP’s could just self-assess as income tax exempt without the need to lodge anything to support this. The first self-review return will be due between 1 July 2024 and 31 October 2024. Members will be advised when further information about what will need to be contained within the return is released.
To prepare for this, the ATO has suggested taking the following steps:
◊ Checking that primary contact and ABN details are up to date;
◊ setting up a myGovID and ATO Online Services for the club; and
◊ reviewing and updating governing documents where needed.
NFP’s registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) and those who have been endorsed by the ATO as income tax exempt will however be eligible for income tax exemption without being required to lodge an annual self-review return.
Additionally, members are also reminded that the ATO has released a GST search tool and is encouraging those that sell food and beverage products to check if GST applies. Clubs can check this via two methods, either by utilising the ATO’s GST detailed food list or by searching for specific food and beverage products on the search tool which can be accessed here.
Those Clubs that have not charged GST where they previously should have done so can look to make voluntary disclosures to the ATO and should discuss this with their accountant. Lastly the ATO has released a tax and super checklist for new employees to help them understand the tax and superannuation system that will apply to them. This can be accessed on Clubs SA’s Members Only site on the WR: Paid and Voluntary Workers Management Tools page and is titled “Tax & Super Checklist for New Workers - ATO”.
Clubs need to ensure when a new employee starts that they obtain information on their choice of super fund and if they don’t choose one that a search is undertaken for any stapled funds they may have. Clubs will also have to obtain their Tax File Number (TFN) and ensure they are taxed correctly.
Where a club has further specific questions about tax related matters they should look to speak to an accountant or other tax expert.
I continue to speak to a number of members who have employees without a written contract in place.
It is possible to have verbal contracts and agreements and there is no express requirement in legislation for a written employment contract, however the absence of clear written terms can lead to potential issues and disputes later arising. Examples of disputes that could arise from a lack of a written contract includes how an employee agreed to be paid and their exact date of commencement.
Where an agreement is verbal any dispute relating to this will then be a matter of someone’s word against the other. This will often result in any matter being dragged out longer than necessary and increase the chances of a formal claim being made and an adverse finding being made against a club. Additionally there are certain things that could be part of an employee’s contract that need to be documented clearly in writing. This includes where an employee is paid a salary as they will require something clearly showing that they agreed to being paid in this manner and what the salary covers such as via the presence of an “offset clause”.
An offset clause is a clause that specifically states that an employee is being paid above award and that this amount can be used to offset (cover) other entitlements.
Employers also have a requirement to keep a number of records including records relating to an employee’s commencement date, their pay rate and classification. Having a written contract in place can assist in ensuring information like this is accurately documented. Template casual and permanent (full-time and part-time) contracts are available for members to access on the Clubs SA Members site along with other useful or required documents. I would urge clubs who have not been utilising written contracts to strongly consider doing so in the future.
The contract templates can be tailored and altered as needed but it is important that any terms are clear, do not provide less than the relevant minimum entitlements set in legislation and accurately reflect the relationship between the two parties.
Members who have any questions in relation to contracts or other templates we have available can contact me at the details below:
Rhys Braybrook Workplace Relations & Policy Manager workplacerelations@clubssa.com.au0448 273 355.
We visited some of our Members in the north recently and couldn’t have picked a better day weather wise.
The Clubs looked stunning bathed in the welcome Autumn sunshine. Looking particularly impressive was Balaklava Racing Club - how green is that grass?!
The Club is a recent addition to the Clubs SA family, joining as part of Country Racing SA’s Group Membership and it was a pleasure to meet Helen who has been keeping things running smoothly there for the past nine years. This 11 September will see the Club celebrate 120 years of racing in Balaklava and it promises to be a fantastic event. Their Cup Day is the largest race meeting held outside the metro area and is in fact, the biggest annual sporting event in country SA.
Balaklava Cup Day 2023 saw in excess of 100 coaches, 10 limousines, 4 helicopters and hundreds a private vehicles visit, bringing thousands along for the event.
The day’s party atmosphere of racing, networking, music, food, wine and friendship guarantees its well deserved wide spread recognition as a truly unique event. Not to be out done in the ‘good looking Club’ category was Mallala Bowling Club. They have a nice addition of wall painting since our last visit which provides a great “welcome” on approaching the Club. They may have artificial greens but their surrounding garden areas provide a beautiful splash of colour.
Last but not least, was Two Wells Bowling Club where we came across a member making the most of the day with a quiet practice session. This is usually a bustling vibrant little Club so no wonder he was enjoying having it all to

With 2 legendary SAP titles to choose from: Great King and Royal Emperor and more to come.
And...don’t forget we still have PC Hits, with the original Grand Star and five other games which has been strongly performing across many venues. It’s perfect for hotels where space is at a premium.
