Rich in memories from heritage sites to ancient castles, take a step back in time with your group to visit one of these historic attractions. THE SOUTH EAST HOME OF CHARLES DARWIN
Trio of changes It’s all change at English Heritage. You’ll find new technology lifting the lid on Charles Darwin’s life and work, plus displays of previously unseen original objects, which are all part of major improvements marking two milestones in the history of The Home of Charles Darwin, which opens next February. 2009 is both the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth and 150 years on from the publication of On the 12
Origin of Species, researched and written at his home in Down House near Orpington, Kent. A new exhibition and multi-media tours taking in and explaining his experiments, will make Down House an essential destination for groups during this anniversary year. Call 01609 859119 for visit www.englishheritage.org.uk/downhouse for more information. You could then combine this trip with a visit to Dover Castle, also in Kent, which next
August sees the unveiling of a £2m-plus transformation of its Great Tower, bringing 12th century life for King Henry II and his court to life. The Great Tower will add a new allweather dimension to visits to Dover Castle, best known for its remarkable Secret Wartime Tunnel tours. Call 01304 211067 or visit www.englishheritage.org.uk/dovercastle. And finally, for groups with an interest in gardens, you should make a bee-line to another English Heritage castle, Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire, which in May opens its recreated Elizabethan garden, complete with a large aviary, flower gardens, arbours and obelisks. Call 01926 852078 or visit www.englishheritage.org.uk/kenilworth to find out more. History in the making Visit Tower Bridge Exhibition and discover the colourful history of the bridge from Victorian times to the present day. You will learn how and why the bridge was built through films and interactive displays in the Towers and the high-level Walkways. From the Walkways, you can admire the stunning views across the city to Westminster and down the Thames to Docklands. Your visit will then continue to the historical Victorian Engine

State-of-the-art Following all the new developments that have been launched at Cardiff Castle this year, there has never been a better time to visit with your group. You’ll find the new Interpretation Centre, with a state-of-the-art film presentation, a comfortable café, spacious new gift shop and most importantly, the pick-up point for an audiotour. This hi-tech, hand-held device - narrated by BBC newsreader Huw Edwards guides you around the grounds and tells the 2000year story of the magnificent site. You can stop at any time when following this tour to take a break and enjoy the views, and then carry on when it suits you. And don’t forget to visit the spectacular apartments inside the main house before you leave. These rooms have hosted royal banquets and noble parties for centuries, and the decoration is unlike any other castle or stately home that you’ve seen before. Along their nature trail - set amongst the beautiful woodlands of the New Forest National Park – you’ll find 3 species of otters, 17 species of owls (including the stunning Milky Eagle Owl with pink eyelids), and 3 species of deer. Groups can watch the North American otters swim underwater or the nocturnal badger snoozing in the Night Barn, and then meet a keeper as they feed the animals. In Wallaby Wood, groups can also witness the free ranging wallabies and tame deer, and don’t miss out on the lynx and the wild boar. Wander through the woods The National Forest is one of Britain’s boldest environmental projects to create a new forest for the nation across 200 square miles - embracing parts of Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire. The National Forest contains more than 400 new and ancient woodlands, many of which have public access, making them suitable for group visitors to wander, explore, and enjoy the peace and quiet. You could find yourself walking among a sea of snowdrops in February, a blanket of bluebells in May or through the forest’s fiery displays of red and gold flowers in autumn. The National Forest also hosts an array of events throughout the year that attract visitors from around the world. These include ancient art celebrations, the scarecrow festivals, classical concerts, folk festivals, theatrical events, arts and crafts shows, regattas, canal festivals and much more.
