先日、上司に誘われて、仕事帰りに軽く一軒付き合った。連れて行かれたのは、会社の近くにあるホルモン焼きのお店。「へえ、こんな所にホルモン焼きのお店があったんだ～。」と、初めて入ったお店に、興味津々でいると、とても明るい照明に、やけに真新しいテーブルと椅子が目にとまった。お店の人の話によれば、つい3ヶ月前にオープンしたばかりだと言う。

A couple of days ago, my boss asked me if I was willing to go grab a few drinks after work. He took me to an eatery near our workplace where they sold “Hormone Yaki*” I was quite surprised to find a restaurant that had grilled-hormone in the neighborhood, but then my eyes caught sight of the brandnew tables and chairs in the restaurant. The owner said that they opened just three months ago.

「ホルモン」って、今すごく注目されていると、私はつい最近テレビで見たばかり。偶然にもこんなホットな場所に私を連れて来てくれた上司に感謝しながら、店内を改めて見渡してみると、女性客の多さに驚いた。「ホルモン」って、ひと昔前は、焼肉屋でおやじが食べてるイメージだったのに・・・。最近では、パリジェンヌならぬ「ホルモンヌ(焼肉屋でホルモンを食べる女性の事)」という新語が生まれるほどのブームになっていたとは。ちなみに「ホルモン」とは、大きな意味で言うと、動物の小腸や大腸を指すのだが、心臓や胃、他の内蔵の部位もそう呼ばれている。内蔵系には独特の臭みがあり、本当に新鮮な物でないと食べにくい。この日、偶然ホルモンヌデビューとなった私は、早速上司と共にお店の人お勧めの、炭火焼きホルモンセットともつ鍋を注文した。ホルモンセットは、異なった部位ごとに串刺しされたホルモンを、適量の塩をかけて炭火で焼くのだが、炭火の香ばしさと塩との相性が素晴らしかった。もつ鍋(牛の内蔵鍋)の方も、トロッとした食感で、これまた最高！ホルモン系(特にレバー)が少し苦手な私でも、何の違和感もなく完食する事ができた。ホルモンは、食感は脂っこいのに、カルビより低カロリーで、コラーゲンが豊富。さぁ、あなたもホルモンを食べて、お肌ぷるぷる～！というのはいかが！？

yakiniku (BBQ) à l’horumon. «Je ne savais pas qu’on pouvait trouver ce genre d’établissement dans le coin!» me dis-je en entrant, pleine de curiosité, et je remarquai aussitôt que l’endroit était très bien illuminé et que les tables et les chaises étaient toutes neuves. On m’annonça que l’endroit venait d’ouvrir il y a tout juste trois mois.

I heard on TV a few days ago that “hormone” is all the rage these days. I looked around while thanking my boss for taking me to such a hot place. What struck me the most was the presence of so many ladies. Up until a while ago, “hormone” had a “only middleaged guys ate it at barbecue restaurants” image. Now, I hear that it is so popular with the ladies that a new word had to be created – “hormonienne” just like Parisienne! By the way, in case you are wondering what “hormone” is, it actually signifies the small and large intestines of animals, but has now expanded to imply other visceral organs such as liver and heart. Since the visceral organs have a peculiar smell, they have to be really fresh otherwise it is difficult to eat them. On that day, at my hormonienne debut, I ordered what the owner recommended – char grilled hormone set and “Motsu-Nabe” – a hotpot containing mostly visceral organs. Hormone set had different parts on a stick and they were grilled to perfection with salt, and the flavor obtained by grilling them on charcoal went perfectly with the salt. MotsuNabe also had a very easy-to-eat consistency and was absolutely amazing. I was initially not too gung-ho about eating the visceral organs and especially the liver, but I wiped my plate clean! Hormone has a nice, meaty flavor, but is comparatively lower in calories than other forms of red meat and has plenty of collagen. So why don’t you, dear reader, eat hormon too: your skin will become beautiful!!

Dernièrement justement, j’avais entendu à la télé que l’horumon attire beaucoup les gens ces jours¬ci. En remerciant mon patron de m’avoir fait découvrir cet endroit «in» je regardai à nouveau autour de moi et quelle fut ma surprise lorsque je remarquai la présence en nombre des femmes! Les hommes fréquentaient traditionnellement ce genre de restaurants mais on assiste maintenant à un boom tel que le terme d’ «horumonne» a été introduit pour designer les femmes qui visitent ces établissements pour y consommer de l’horumon. En passant, le mot horumon se réfère en principe aux boyaux d’animaux mais on l’utilise aussi pour parler des viscères. Vu son odeur particulière, il s’agit d’un mets difficile à consommer s’il n’est pas très frais. Je suis donc devenue une «horumonne» complètement par hasard, après avoir commandé un combo de horumon grillé au charbon dans un nabe (potau-feu japonais) avec mon patron, sur recommandation du serveur. Le combo était composé de quelques éléments différents mis en brochette et rôtis avec un peu de sel: ce mélange du parfum du charbon avec le sel fut vraiment extraordinaire. Quant au nabe qui contenait des intestins de bœuf, ce fut tout aussi merveilleux! Je finis par tout avaler, moi qui d’habitude n’aime pas ce genre d’aliments! L’horumon a l’apparence graisseuse, mais il contient pourtant moins de calories que des côtes et il est riche en collagène. Alors, ça vous dit d’en manger pour avoir une belle peau lisse?

私の個人的な意見だが、日本を旅行するなら、おすすめの季節は絶対に秋である。その理由は、暑すぎず寒すぎず、ちょうど良い気候ということ、晴天の日が多いということ、そして、食べ物がおいしい季節ということだ。

This is merely my personal opinion, however, I would say that the best season to visit Japan is autumn. This is because the weather is neither too hot nor too cold, but just comfortable with a lot of sunny days. And on top of that, it’s the season for good food.

JRパス

The JR pass

せっかく行くなら、電車や新幹線を活用していろんな街を巡りたい。そんな人へのおすすめは、「JRパス」。JRグループの鉄道、路線バスが乗り降り自由にできるスペシャル・パスである。観光目的の外国人旅行者だけに許された特権である。期間によって価格が決められており、７日間で28，300円(約$330)など。旅行前に旅行代理店などで購入しておかなければならない。

現金入手方法

日本のコンビニは、いろいろなサービスを行っていてとっても便利。外国人旅行者にとって心強いのは、24時間営業のATMサービス。たとえばセブンイレブンでは、海外発行のクレジットカード対応のATM機が設置されている。また、24時間営業ではないが、ゆうちょ銀行のATM でも現金引き出しが可能である。

事前の情報収集

限られた時間の中でたくさんの情報を得て充実した旅をしたいというあなたには、「プラクティカル・トラベル・ガイド」がおすすめ。日本政府観光局が発行する外国人旅行者向けの観光ガイドで、３～４ページほどの冊子には、観光地情報やお得なクーポン情報などが、ぎっしり。ウェブサイトからダウンロードできるので、事前に情報収集して、効率的に旅を満喫しよう。 www.jnto.go.jp/eng/location/ rtg/index.html

The Japan Rail pass is an ideal ticket for people who want to visit many places in Japan by using regular trains and bullet trains as means of transportation. This special pass allows the holder to take any Japan Rail trains and busses for unlimited access. The JR pass can only be purchased by foreigners visiting Japan. Prices are fixed depending on the duration of the pass. For example, a seven day pass costs 28,300 yen (about $330.) Travelers need to purchase the pass prior to their trip to Japan through travel agencies or other institutions.

Ways to acquire cash

Convenience stores in Japan provide a wide number of services, including 24 hours ATM services; which is good news for travelers from abroad. For example, at 7-Eleven you can find ATMs that accept credit cards issued abroad. Also, in Yucho, although it isn’t available 24 hours a day, you can withdraw cash using your credit card through their ATMs.

Collecting information before traveling

For people who would like to gather solid information within a short period of time, I recommend “the Practical Travel Guide” issued by the Tourism Department of Japan. This 3-4 pages long guide is designed for foreign visitors. It provides a lot of information on tourism as well as coupons that allow you to save money. Cette couleur est omniprésente : dans les branches des arbres, sur nos joues rougies par le froid, et également sur nos vêtements. Si vous croisez des gens dans la rue ce mois-ci avec un coquelicot épinglé à eux, détrompez-vous, ce n’est pas une nouvelle mode. C’est le symbole des soldats morts au combat. Le Jour du Souvenir, aussi connu comme jour de l’Armistice, est une journée de commémoration annuelle observée en Europe et dans les pays du Commonwealth pour commémorer les sacrifices de la Première Guerre mondiale.

Voyager au Japon À mon avis, la meilleure saison pour voyager au Japon est sans conteste l’automne. Les jours de beau temps sont alors nombreux et la température idéale, car il ne fait ni trop chaud, ni trop froid. De plus, la cuisine de cette saison est délicieuse!

Le JR Pass

Vous vous donnez la peine d’aller au Japon, et vous voulez utiliser le train et le shinkansen (le TGV japonais) pour visiter les villes? Si c’est le cas, le JR Pass est parfait pour vous! Ce titre de transport spécial permet une utilisation illimitée des chemins de fers et des autobus du groupe JR (Japan Railways); il est réservé aux voyageurs étrangers qui visitent le Japon en tant que touristes. Le prix du JR Pass varie selon sa période de validité : il coûtera ainsi environ 28 300 yens (environ 330 $) pour 7 jours. Il faut se procurer le JR Pass avant le départ, par exemple dans une agence de voyage.

Accès aux fonds

Les dépanneurs au Japon sont très pratiques, car ils offrent toute une gamme de services. On y trouve notamment des guichets automatiques accessibles à toute heure de la journée et qui permettront aux voyageurs d’avoir l’esprit tranquille. Les dépanneurs de la chaîne 7-Eleven sont par exemple équipés de guichets qui acceptent les cartes de crédits étrangères. Il est aussi possible d’effectuer des retraits aux guichets de la Japan Post Bank (en japonais Yûcho Ginkô), mais ce service n’est pas offert vingt-quatre heures sur vingt-quatre.

Se renseigner avant le départ

Pour ceux qui veulent se renseigner à l’avance afin de profiter du maximum de leur court séjour, il est recommandé de consulter les « Practical Travel Guides ». Publiés par l’Office National du Tourisme Japonais, ces guides de voyage à l’intention des voyageurs étrangers se présentent sous forme de fascicules de 3 ou 4 pages contenant des tonnes de renseignements sur les destinations touristiques et les rabais offerts. Cette journée a lieu le 11 novembre pour rappeler la signature de l’Armistice mettant fin à la Première Guerre mondiale, en 1918. Par tradition, il y a deux minutes de silence à 11 h, le 11e jour du 11e mois ; c’est à ce moment-là que l’armistice a été signé. Fait intéressant, c’est le célèbre poème In Flanders Fields, du médecin canadien John McCrae, qui donna à la fleur sa mythique réputation. Il remarqua que les champs qui étaient nus avant le combat se couvraient de fleurs rouge sang après la bataille. Certains vers du poème se retrouvent sur les billets de 10 $CDN et même le club de hockey le Canadien de Montréal en utilise quelques lignes comme devise. Alors profitez bien des couleurs que la nature nous offre c’est temps-ci, car bientôt, tout sera couvert de blanc!

Red November

We are already in November and the leaves in the trees have reddened and will soon fall to the ground. However, although autumn fills us with beautiful colors in our forests, it also brings rain and refreshing air to our land. This period of the year can seem grayer and sullen; however, November is the month that brings significant tints of red. This autumn colors are omnipresent: in the trees, one’s cheeks reddened by the cold, and also on our clothing. Also, if you happen to come across people in the street wearing a poppy pinned on them, don’t worry, it’s not a new vogue. The poppy represents the official symbol honoring the soldiers who died during both world wars. In line with this, Remembrance Day is a special day set aside to commemorate the brave men and women who gave their lives during World Wars I and II. At one time, the day was known as Armistice Day, but was renamed Remembrance Day after the Second World War. The 11th day of the 11th month marks the signing of the Armistice, on November 11, 1918, to signal the end of World War I. Also, the famous poem In Flanders Fields, written by Canadian Leif tenant Colonel Doctor John A. McCrae, gave the poppy its mythical reputation. The poppy emblem was chosen because of poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I. Also, their red colour is an appropriate symbol for the bloodshed of trench warfare. Several verses of the poem are found on hockey ticket stubs of the Canadien de Montreal (Montreal Canadians), who also use some of the poems lines as their motto. Enjoy the autumn colors while you can, as soon we will be covered with white!

2年前のこと。極度の疲労だと思っていた腰痛としびれがヘルニアだと診断され母親に連れて行かれた鍼灸院。「ハリを体に刺す!?ありえない!」順番を待っている間、壁にかかっている「鍼の説明」を必死に読んだ。痛くない。痛いとすれば蚊にさされる程度など。「ほんとかなぁ」と半信半疑。病院でのMRIの結果を、鍼の先生は触っただけで「あ～ここね。○番目と○番目の間。」この一言で私の「半信半疑」は吹っ飛んだ。鍼は本当に痛くなかった。経絡という体の中の気の流れ上にあるツボを鍼で刺激することで自然治癒力を高めるらしい。副作用もない。たまにツボをはずすのか10回に1回位チクッと痛い時もある。でも鍼をした後の体の軽さを考えたらその程度の痛みは全然平気。鍼で良くなる症状も様々。リウマチ、気管支炎、糖尿病等。不妊治療で来られる方もいるらしい。痛みがひどかった時は続けて通ったり、週一で行ったり。今は月に1回程度。大抵の鍼灸院がそうだと思うが私の通っている所も自宅兼診療所というアットホームな感じ。先生や奥様との会話も癒されるよ♪

About two years ago, I thought my back pain and numbness were caused by overworking. When in fact, my pain stemmed from a slipped disk! My mother took me to an Acupuncture clinic. I was hesitant at first as I didn’t know anything about Acupuncture, nor could I understand why it was necessary for needles to pierce my body! While waiting for my session to begin, I read the information board in the clinic and noted it said I wouldn’t feel any pain other than something similar to a small mosquito bite. Oddly enough, a Doctor diagnosed my symptoms using a MRI, while the Acupuncturist identified my slipped disk as soon as he touched my back. Suffice to say, I felt immediate relief, and I didn’t feel any pain whatsoever during the Acupuncture session. Our bodies attempt to recover themselves through Acupuncture, and Acupuncture has no side effects. In addition, I am not at all concerned even I do feel some pain caused by the needle as I have gained an appreciation and confidence for Acupuncture, and I feel very comfortable with the procedure. Acupuncture can have an effect on several disorders such as rheumatism, bronchitis and diabetes – and some people visit Acupuncture clinics for treating sterility. Most Acupuncture clinics are located in private homes that provide a very homey atmosphere, and I can enjoy meeting the entire family.

I live in Hiroshima. I moved to Canada to study the art of pastry making and business management. Now I’m studying management and accounting to one day start up my own cafe.

Acuponcture Il y a à peu près deux ans, je croyais que mes maux de dos étaient causés pas le stress du travail. Cependant, la cause de ma douleur était une hernie discale! C’est alors que ma mère m’a amené à une clinique d’acuponcture. J’hésitais au début parce que je ne savais pratiquement rien sur l’acuponcture, et je ne pouvais pas non plus concevoir que l’on me perce le corps avec des aiguilles! Pendant que j’attendais mon tour à la clinique, j’ai lu sur un babillard que je ne sentirais aucune douleur autre que la sensation d’une petite piqûre de moustique. À ma surprise, alors qu’un docteur précédent avait eu besoin d’un IRM pour diagnostiquer mes symptômes, l’acuponcteur n’a eu qu’à toucher mon dos pour identifier mon hernie discale. Cela me soulagea grandement, et je n’ai senti aucune douleur pendant toute la session. Avec l’aide de l’acuponcture, qui n’a d’ailleurs aucun effet secondaire, notre corps essaie de guérir par lui-même. Maintenant ça ne me dérange plus si je ressens une petite douleur; j’ai dorénavant une grande confiance en l’acuponcture, et je me sens très à l’aise avec la procédure. L’acuponcture peut aider à combattre de nombreuses maladies, telles que les rhumatismes, la bronchite et le diabète. Il y a aussi des gens qui ont recours à l’acuponcture pour traiter la stérilité. La plupart des cliniques d’acuponctures se trouvent dans des maisons familiales. C’est-à-dire qu’en plus de profiter d’une ambiance très accueillante, on a le plaisir de rencontrer toute la famille.

雨音は「ハサミ」の調べ「…僕は冷たい１１月の雨の中に消えていく…」GunsN’Rosesの名曲、「November Rain」を口ずさみたくなるようなこの時期、皆様いかがお過ごしでしょうか。さてご注目。この度にこは、寂しげな後姿が似合うこの冷たい雨とは対照的に、真正面から届く素敵な笑顔が眩しい、温かな「雨」を発見しました！今月ご紹介する「モントリオールのナイスガイーモンナイー」は、１０月に移転グランドオープンした美容室「Style m」にやってきた美容師、雨田孝一さん、通称「雨」さんです。中学時代に地図帳を手にしたことから海外への興味が生まれたという雨さん。美容師さんになったのも、ハサミさえあれば、世界中どこへでも出かけていけるのでは、と想像したからだそうな。パリを本拠地とする美容室「IGREK PARIS」の日本店舗など、２店舗にて勤務経験を積んだ後、満を持して海を越えました。この雨さんの抱く夢はとてもユニーク。それは、「セルビア共和国に美容学校を作りたい」というもの。まだ独立国家としての歴史短いセルビアにて、自分の習得した美容技術を伝え、自分自身もやりがいを感じ、習う側の人々も情熱と幸せをかみしめる、そんなシェアリングをしたいというのです。実際に東京にあるセルビアの大使館を訪れ、自分の夢を語ったそうです。その時のセルビアの書記官のセリフが、「まずは英語を習得してください、仕事はそれからです」というものだったそう。それで、英語を勉強するという目標を掲げ、知人たちによい場所と勧められたモントリオールにやってきたのです。海外に出て５カ月が過ぎた現在、苦手だった語学はなかなか上達しないけれど、実際に海外に出てきたことで、新しい目標、夢が次から次へと湧いてくることに、自分でも驚いて興奮しているとのこと。海外に出ることをためらっている日本の若者たちに、勇気を持って、目標を持って、飛び出してみてください、きっと何か見つかります！とエールを送っています。勉強熱心な雨さん、人種のモザイク・モントリオールで美容師をするということで、東洋人以外の人種それぞれの髪質、似合う髪形などを研究中とのこと。その人に似合う髪形をすばやく提案する「アーティスト」として、また御客様の希望通りに、満足のいく髪形に仕上げる「職人」として、一人でも多くの人が、鏡の中の自分を見てほほ笑む、そのお手伝いができたら嬉しいと語ってくれました。美容師経験２４年のベテラン雅子さんが、Style mの太陽だとしたら、そこに鮮やかな虹を架けてくれるのが雨さん。ハサミさばきがよく見えるよう、さあ、傘はささずに出かけることといたしましょう。

トライリンガルになるまでに日本語・英語･フランス語の３ヶ国語を話せることは、自慢できることでもあります。でも、さすがに３ヶ国語ともキープするには忍耐が必要だと感じています。それぞれに現代化した表現・話し方があるので、つねに勉強していかなくてはいけないからです。

業的に卒業は出来たものの、世の中はそんな甘くはありませんでした。フランス語での会話は、早過ぎて聞き取れないことが多く、こっちもちゃんと言いたいことが表現出来なくて苦労しました。カレッジは英語に移り、解放されたと思ったほど嬉しかったです。

３３歳になった今は、違った面で３ヶ国語をとても誇りに思ってモントリオールに来て早２５年。います。「ランゲージ」に対して様々な思日本語を拒否していた時もありいがありました。ましたが、今では日本人であるこ日本語しか話せないまま、現地とを大切に思え、それこそ自慢での英語の小学校へ通わされ、何きるようになりました。そして消も分からないまま小学校生活をえることの無かった日本のエンタ送り始めました。５･６年生くらーテインメントへの興味のおかいにやっと英語が身に付き、それげで、たくさんの日本の番組を見以降、日本語を拒否していた時期ては勉強しているところです。まもありました。た、ブログやココモンでコラムを書いているのも勉強の一つとしある時、日本語で話しかけて来たて頑張っています。母親に「何？」って聞き返し、「うわフランス語は愛する主人の母国ー、ともこ日本語話してる～！」と語。彼の母親との貴重な会話。始友達に冷やかされたのを覚えてめの頃は全然話せなかったのでいます。友達の前では恥ずかしくすが、今となってはたくさん意見て日本語を話すのを避けていまを言い合って会話が弾むようにした。どうしても友達の輪に馴染なってきました。フランス語が身みたくてしょうがなかったからなに付いたのは彼の家族のおかげのでしょう。とにかく自分は日本でもあり、ヘア･メークとして働く人ではない、日本語なんて話せ中では欠かせない言葉だからでない、自分はカナダ人なんだともあります。ばかり思っていた時期がありまそして英語は自分にとっては母した。国語の様に、今でも自分のメインそれでも、毎週土曜日の日本語の言語です。補習校にはずっと通い続けました。成績は良かったとは言えませ母親となった今は、子供２人にんが、日本語を無理して話してい親の母国語をちゃんと伝え、教るような気持ちはありませんでしえ、育てたいと思っています。違た。どこかで本当の自分を隠し通った国の方と結婚し、子供を授かせなかったのでしょう、家で一人った親としての義務だと実感してになった時は、密かに日本語のいます。両方の血を継いでいるの小説を読んだり、日本のドラマをですから、どちらかを否定すると見たりして日本の文化に触れてか優先するとかではなく、両方のいました。親の全てを理解してもらいたいという思いは、親としては当たり８年生から突然、フランス語の学前だと思っています。校へと移ることになり、また全てが変わりました。年頃だった私にやっと、はっきりと「トライリンガとっては辛いことでした。それまルです」と言えるようになった今での友達をなくし、トップクラスは、視野が広がったと言えます。からドーンと成績も落ちてしまい毎日、常に３つのカルチャーにました。またチンプンカンプンの触れることができて本当に得しまま一生懸命友達の輪の中に馴た気分です。染もうと必死でした。頑張って学

I have to say, I allow myself to brag a little when it comes to the fact that I am able to speak all three languages: Japanese, English and French. However, I do have to admit, maintaining all of three languages require lots of patience. In each language, there are new developments with expressions and the way things are said so I constantly need to follow up on the new lingo. It has already been 25 years since my arrival to Montreal. I had many views and opinions about all languages throughout the years. Upon my arrival, with only just Japanese as my main language, I was placed in the local English elementary school right away. I went through the first few years not understanding a thing, and then by the 5th or the 6th grade I was able to fully understand and speak English which lead me to refuse to speak Japanese. There was this one time where I responded, “Nani? (What?)”, to my mother when she asked me something in front of few friends. I remember them teasing me by saying, “Look, Tomoko’s speaking Japanese!” I started to refuse to speak Japanese in front of my friends. I must have felt the need to fit in amongst my friends. So much so that I had started to think that I was not Japanese, that I didn’t speak Japanese and that I was a Canadian. However, despite the hardship, I still went to my Japanese school every Saturday. I didn’t necessary have great notes, but it was a place where I never felt forced nor shy to speak the language. Deep inside, there was still a part of me that couldn’t deny who I was. Alone in my home, I would read Japanese mystery novels and watch Japanese Dorama episodes to feel a part of my own country. I continued on to high school, and suddenly things fell apart when I had to switch to a French school starting from 8th grade. Being a typical sensitive teenager, I found this extremely hard especially to downgrade from an honor roll student to barely passing grades. I felt like

I had to try hard to fit in without understanding anything at all again. Academically, I was able to graduate high school. However, I soon understood that it was much too hard to even maintain simple communication in the real world. The French language was much too hard for me to grasp, and I felt frustrated at not being able to express myself properly. I returned to an English school for CEGEP and felt relieved. Now at 33, my views and opinions on languages have changed tremendously. There was a time I refused to speak Japanese, but now I feel most proud and I appreciate being Japanese. Also, there is always this yearning and love for Japanese entertainment that is continuously teaching me Japanese and keeping me upto-date. Also, I voluntarily contribute my time to my blog as well as Coco Montreal’s column as part of my Japanese lesson. French is my loving husband’s mother-tongue. There was lack of communication with his mother during our first years together, but now we talk on a regular basis as I can speak much more fluently. I believe I have learned to speak the French language thanks to his family, and also in the work field as a makeup & hair artist where it is almost a necessity. As for my English, it is still my main language of choice that helps me keep it up continuously. As a mother of two now, I strongly feel the need to educate my children in both Japanese and French as their main languages. I feel it is my duty as a mother but also as a person who has married someone from another race. The children carry both of our blood, so it is neither to deny one nor to force one but to educate properly both languages and cultures to help them understand where their parents came from. Now as an official trilingual, I can say that my view has extended far beyond! On a daily basis, I am constantly in touch with all the three different cultures that I feel so lucky and honored.

Avant de devenir trilingue Je dois dire, je me permets de me vanter quand il s’agit du fait que je peux parler trois langues: japonais, anglais et français. Cependant, je dois admettre, essayer de maintenir à jour toutes ces trois langueslà prend énormément de patience. Dans chaque langue il y a de nouvelles expressions et différentes manières de parler qu’il me faux suivre constamment. Ça fait déjà 25 ans depuis mon arrivée à Montréal. J’ai eu beaucoup de points de vue et d’avis différents envers les langues tout au long des années. Lorsque je suis arrivée, seulement avec mon japonais (ma langue maternelle), j’ai été placée tout de suite dans l’école primaire anglaise de mon quartier. J’ai vécu les premières années sans rien comprendre. Puis, à partir de la 5ème ou 6ème année, je pouvais comprendre et parler l’anglais. Je me souviens d’une fois où j’ai répondu « Nani ? » (quoi?) à ma mère quand elle m’avait demandé quelque chose devant mes amis. Je me rappelle que ces amis me taquinaient en disant, « regarde, Tomoko parle japonais! ». Ceci m’a emmené à refuser de parler le japonais devant mes amis. Je dois avoir tellement senti la nécessité de m’adapter que j’ai commencé à penser que je n’étais pas japonaise, que je ne parlais pas le japonais et que j’étais une canadienne. Mais cependant, malgré les difficultés, j’allais à chaque samedi à mon école japonaise. Je n’avais pas nécessairement de bonnes notes, mais c’était un endroit où je ne me suis jamais senti obligée de parler la langue, et je n’avais pas peur non plus. Dans mon cœur, il y avait toujours une partie de moi qui ne pouvait pas nier qui j’étais. Dans ma maison, je lisais des romans de mystère japonais et regardais des téléséries japonaises pour ressentir en moi une partie de mon propre pays. J’ai continué le secondaire, mais soudainement les choses sont tombées en morceaux quand j’ai dû aller à une école française à partir de la 8ème année. Étant une typique adolescente sensible, j’ai trouvé le changement extrêmement dur, particulièrement lorsque mes notes, élevées en tant qu’étudiant d’honneur à l’école

anglaise, ont baissé considérablement. Je sentais que je devais recommencer à faire des amis sans rien comprendre encore une fois. J’ai réussi à finir le secondaire, mais j’ai vite compris qu’il était très difficile de tenir même une simple conversation en français en dehors de l’école, dans le monde réel. Il était beaucoup trop difficile pour moi de saisir la langue française, et je me sentais frustrée de ne pas pouvoir m’exprimer correctement. Je suis revenue à une école anglaise pour faire mon CEGEP, je me sentais soulagée. Maintenant à 33 ans, mon point de vue et mon avis sur les langues ont changé énormément. Il y avait un temps où je refusais de parler le japonais. Maintenant je me sens fière de ma nationalité japonaise. En plus, il y a toujours cet amour pour la télé japonaise qui sans cesse m’enseigne le japonais et me tient à jour. En outre, je consacre du temps à écrire mon blog aussi bien que ma chronique à Coco Montréal. Le français est la langue maternelle de mon mari. Il n’y avait pas beaucoup de communication entre sa mère et moi pendant nos premières années ensemble. Maintenant, comme je peux parler beaucoup plus couramment, nous communiquons en français. Je crois que j’ai appris à parler la langue grâce à sa famille et également au travail où, en tant qu’artiste de maquillage et coiffure, c’est presque une nécessité. Quant à mon anglais, c’est toujours ma langue de choix. Étant mère de deux enfants, maintenant je sens fortement la nécessité de faire connaître à mes enfants le japonais et le français. Je sens que c’est mon devoir comme mère et comme épouse d’un homme d’une autre race. Les enfants portent les deux sangs ; il n’est question ni de nier l’un ni de renforcer l’autre, mais d’incorporer correctement les deux langues et cultures pour les aider à comprendre d’où, nous les parents, sommes venus. Maintenant officiellement trilingue, je peux dire que ma vision s’est prolongé bien au-delà! Quotidiennement, je suis en contact avec les trois cultures dont je me sens si chanceuse et honorée.

い冬を目の前にしたこの時期には、やっぱり体を中から温める食べ物が恋しくなりますね。そんな時には麺とスープ！日本人の思い浮かべるラーメンとはちょっと違うけど、手打ち麺が自慢のこのお店で、だしの効いたスープに麺を絡ませてつるつるっとすすれば、体の中から温まりますよ。去年開業したばかりで、店内は小さいながらもこの日は満席。回転が速いので、行列になるということはなさそう。麺はややゆで過ぎ感がありますが、それが逆に体に優しい感じで、体の具合を心配してくれたお母さんが作ってくれた味を思い出して、心もほんわかしちゃいました。

i nter is just around the corner and we are starting to crave the food that warms us up from the inside right? Here are noodles and soup to save us! It has a slightly different image from the Japanese point of view; however this store is proud of its handmade noodles. When you soak noodles into the strong soup stock and slurp them into your mouth, your body gets really warm from inside. The little store that opened last year is filled with customers today. Since customer’s come and go quickly, there never has been a line. Contrary to my feelings that the noodles are boiled a little bit too much, I feel it is gentle to my body. It reminded me of the soup my mother made me when she was worried about my health. so my mind and body became warm.

v ec l’hiver qui arrive à grands pas, nous sommes à la recherche de nourriture qui pourra augmenter notre température corporelle. Bonjour les nouilles et la soupe! Lorsqu’on fait baigner des nouilles préalablement façonnées à la main dans un bouillon dense pour ensuite les déguster, on ressent littéralement la chaleur se diffuser à travers notre corps. Ce petit magasin de nouilles qui a ouvert ses portes l’année dernière est aujourd’hui toujours rempli de clients. Puisque que la rotation des clients est rapide, il n’y a jamais file d’attente. Contrairement à mon inquiétude au sujet d’une possible surexposition à l’eau bouillante, les nouilles étaient cuites adéquatement et ont eu un effet quasi-thérapeutique sur mon corps. Le tout me rapellait la cuisine que préparait ma mère pour donner un petit coup de pouce à ma santé. Bref, mon esprit s’en est trouvé revigoré.

This tasty soup is made with strong soup stock that reminds me the Japanese ramen. It is a simple combination of Chinese cabbage and pork, simple yet tasty. However the taste of noodle is far from the ramen in Japan. It is not too bad to eat soft noodles like this, but, well, I miss chewy Japanese ramen.

Une combinaison simple de chou chinois avec un bouillon concentré et du porc, délicieux au demeurant. Cependant, le goût des nouilles est loin d’être comme le goût de celles du Japon. Ce n’est pas mauvais de manger des nouilles molles comme celles-ci ; malgré tout, je m’ennuie des nouilles du ramen japonais qui sont plus tendres mais sans être molles.

Le goût de chacun des ingrédients est très vif puisque la préparation de ce type de dumpling est épurée. Comme il y a une grande variété de dumpling, il est difficile de n’en choisir qu’une sorte et la longueur de la liste des raviolis nous étourdi presque.

More Than Words There is so much more to karaoke than singing in front of a drunken crowd at a bar and making a fool out of yourself. If you’ve only ever been to a karaoke bar here in Canada, you are probably shaking your head in disagreement as you read this. But, the fact is, when experienced in the country of its birth, karaoke is nothing like its western counterpart. Unlike the stress-inducing western event, in Japan, karaoke is a common form of stress relief. Had a bad day at the office? Rap your rage out with Eminem. Feel like the world is taking you for granted? Belt out I’m Just a Girl at the top of your lungs. Rejected by your latest love interest? Sing your heart out to any number of sappy love songs. Trying to figure out what your shy Japanese boyfriend is really thinking? Make note of the songs he chooses to sing and LISTEN – carefully. In a country that prides itself on a certain level of emotional restraint, the karaoke box is a great place to live outside of the box. It’s a magical space where you don’t have to worry that you are introverted during daylight hours. And the fact that you are tone deaf? It shouldn’t be cause for much concern. The karaoke box is a place to let loose and sing your cares away. And, in my opinion, it’s also the perfect environment to get inside everyone’s head. And heart. With this in mind, I should have taken it as a warning when, on my very first karaoke date with Hiro, he and his best friend performed a beautiful rendition— harmony and all—of More Than Words, by Extreme. I was too moved by how gorgeous his singing voice was, too busy oohing and aahing over how cool

my new boyfriend was, to take a moment and really listen to the words he was singing with such intensity. In retrospect, I’m pretty sure he was trying to tell me something about what he, a Japanese male, was capable of giving me, a foreign female—in the romance department. As the ‘honeymoon phase’ of our relationship neared its end, I noticed that our episodes of rabu-rabu became fewer and farther between. Whenever I mentioned Hiro’s inability to express his feelings to me over girl talk, my friends would shrug it off as though it were nothing. “We Japanese understand how our partner feels without having to say anything,” they would say in a not-very-successful attempt to make me feel better. However, I started to notice that, contrary to what one would expect of his ‘tough guy’ looks, Hiro seemed to truly enjoy singing all those sappy love songs when we went to karaoke together. Oddly, he had a hard time looking me in the eyes and telling me what he was feeling, but he had no problem singing the Backstreet Boys with the passion of one of the boys themselves. Maybe Hiro was using karaoke to tell me how he felt. This realization became even clearer one day when I looked up at the screen and read the lyrics to one of his favourite Jsongs: “utau koto wa muzukashii koto janai.” I sat there staring at the screen, and at that moment, I understood what he had been trying to tell me along. My selfproclaimed “shy Japanese boy” really was shy, and More Than Words was his theme song.

Plus que des mots Le karaoké a bien plus que d'avoir a chanter et de se ridiculiser devant un public ivre dans un bar. Si ta seule expérience avec le karaoké a été ici au Canada, tu es probablement en train de secouer ta tête en désaccord en lisant cela. Mais le fait est que lorsqu'on l'expérience dans son pays natal, le karaoké n'est rien comme son équivalent occidental. Contrairement à l'événement stressant de l'ouest, au Japon, le karaoké est une méthode de soulagement très commune. On a eu une mauvaise journée au travail? Alors on chante du rap de toute rage avec Eminem. On se sent que le monde ne nous reconnaisse pas comme il le faut? On s'époumonne avec I'm Just a Girl. Rejeté pas son intrigue romantique? On se laisse donc aller avec l'une des plusieures chansons d'amour. On essaye de comprendre ce que son petit copain Japonais timide est vraiment en train de penser? Alors prend note des chansons qu'il décide de chanter et ÉCOUTE - très attentivement. Dans un pays qui est plutôt fière d'avoir un certain niveau de modération émotionnelle, le karaoké est un très bon endroit pour vivre sans cette restriction. C'est un espace magique où tu n'as pas besoin de te faire du souci pour être introverti pendant le jour. Et si l'on a vraiment pas d'oreille musicale? Ce n'est pas vraiment quelque chose de très important. La boîte de karaoké est une place pour se laisser aller et chanter de son tout. Et, dant mon opinion, c'est aussi l'endroît idéal pour découvrir ce qui se passe dans la tête des autres. De même que dans leur cœur. Avec ceci en tête, j'aurais dû être plus attentive lorsque, dans mon tout premier rendez-vous dans un karaoké avec Hiro, il a chanté avec son meilleur ami une très belle interprétation - avec l'harmonie et tout- de More Than Words (Plus que des Mots) par Extreme. bien trop émue par la beauté de sa voix, trop occupée de faire des "ooouhhh!" et des "aaahhh!" par l'admiration de mon cool nouveau petit copain, sans vraiment prendre un moment pour vraiment écouter aux mots qu'il chantait avec autant de passion. Rétrospectivement, je suis sûre qu'il essayait de me faire savoir à propos de ce qu'il, comme un homme Japonais, était capable de me donner à moi, une femme de l'étranger, du côté romantique. Une fois que la phase "lune-de-miel" de notre relation s'était terminée, j'ai remarqué que les moments de rabu-rabu entre nous devenaient de plus en plus rares. À chaque fois que je mentionnais l'inhabilité que Hiro avait pour s'exprimer lorsque je parlais avec mes amies, elles l'ignoraient comme si ce n'était rient. "En tant que Japonaises, on comprend ce que nos partenaires ressentent sans n'avoir à rien dire", me disaient-elles en essayant sans réussite de me faire monter la morale. Cependant, j'ai commencé à remarquer que, contrairement à ce qu'on s'attendrait de son apparence de "mec fort", Hiro semblait vraiment aimer chanter toutes ses petites chansons ridicules d'amour lorsqu'on était ensemble au karaoké. Lending and borrowing talks about one person giving another person something (money, a pencil, a car, etc.), and then getting it back from them after some time.

Sample Conversation

私たちは、ほとんどの場合、「私が」「あなたに」という部分を省略しますね。混乱を避けるためや、はっきりするときだけ、「みきちゃんに」と補足したりしますが、主語の「私は」は、ほとんど省きます。日本語では、英語やフランス語のような語順（S O V）はあまり大事ではなく、助詞の「に」や「を」などを伴うことで、「誰が」「誰に」という方向付けをはっきりさせます。また、通常の私たちの会話では、こういった「私が」「あなたに」などの部分は、当人同士が分かっていれば大抵の場合省略しますね。そのため、いざ日本語から英語に訳そうと思うと、少し考えてしまうのです。（でも、実は英語やフランス語の構造の方が、もっと明確で分かりやすいんですよ！）何事も勉強と練習ですが、できるだけ日本語から英語に訳そうとせず、英語の語順（主語、述語、目的語）、構造を考えながら英文を作る練習をすると良いかもしれません。 Now, here are two INCORRECT examples.

JIMMY: Can you borrow me your pen? BILLY: Huh? In this example, Jimmy has mixed up “borrow” and “lend,” so Billy doesn’t know how to answer. Try not to do this! Because it can be difficult to ask for things from people, it’s really important to ask in a grammatically correct way. This will increase your chance of getting what you want! Good luck!
