Salut Montréal! My name is Nick and I've had the pleasure of living in this fine city up until this past month, when I made the big move to Nagoya, Japan to teach English. I'm hoping to occasionally contribute some pieces from way over here as my own little means of keeping ties with home. I'd like to tell you a little about Nagoya Castle, a truly impressive monument, which I visited on my first-ever sightseeing trip in Japan. On a chilly Saturday morning, what began as a trek to the local ward office was instantly derailed when I saw the vibrant green dungeon of the castle, cresting the tops of the grounds' ancient trees. It's a long walk to the castle from the gate, and many landmarks, such as old stones and teahouses, set the historical tone of the castle's exhibitions. Interestingly, much of the castle's foundation is still preserved despite the violent fate it suffered during World War II. Constructed in the 17th Century by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Shogun of the Edo Period (1600-1868), Nagoya Castle remained in constant use throughout this time. It served as a pivotal political centre for the period up until the Meiji Restoration, when it was abandoned and nearly
Français Hello Montreal! Jusqu'au mois dernier j'ai eu le plaisir de vivre dans cette bonne ville, ayant fait le saut à Nagoya au Japon pour enseigner l'anglais. J'espère pouvoir contribuer avec de petits articles, même a distance, afin de garder les liens avec la ville. Je voudrais vous parler du château de Nagoya, un monument très impressionnant, que j'ai visité lors de ma première excursion touristique. Lors d'un dimanche frisquet, une randonnée au service de bureau local fut détournée
demolished for its connection to the newly disbanded shogunate. Thankfully, this stunning monument was designated a national treasure in its would-be final moments. The exhibitions display many of the fascinating relics that have survived the castle's turbulent history: vibrant tapestries, armour and equipment, swords, rifles and the truly impressive Golden Dolphin – all produced in ornate and exquisite detail. The top floor of the castle offers us an immersive look into the daily life of a castle official, complete with scale replicas of various important rooms, and a day- night cycle in which the lights are dimmed and torches are lit for extra ambiance. Finally, the top floor serves as an observatory, with a lovely 360-degree view of the surrounding area. I had to squint, but I made sure to spot my apartment in the distance before I headed back downstairs. My visit to Nagoya Castle was a fascinating first-hand lesson in Japanese history, and Nagoya itself has a unique and very positive energy (and the food is outstanding.) I hope to share more about my time in this great city soon!

Vivre l’histoire au chateau Nagoya
名古屋城の生きた歴史
Meiji il servi de centre politique et fut ensuite abandonné et presque détruit à cause de ces liens avec le shogunat maintenant défunt. Heureusement, à la dernière minute, ce monument impressionnant fut désigné un trésor national. Les expositions mettent en valeur des reliques fascinantes ayant survécues l'histoire turbulente du chateau: tapisseries vibrants, armures et équipements, épées, fusils et l'impressionnant Dauphin Doré - tous affichant des détails ornés autant qu'exquis. Au dernier étage le château offre un aperçu du quotidien de ses fonctionnaires, avec des répliques d'importantes chambres de taille réelle; Les lumières suivent le cours de la journée et sont baissées alors que des torches sont allumées afin d'ajouter de l'ambiance. Pour finir, le dernier étage sert l'observatoire avec une jolie vue d'ensemble des régions environnantes. Avant de descendre j'ai jeté un coup d'oeil mais, je me suis assuré de repérer un appartement au loin. Ma randonnée au château Nagoya était une leçon d'histoire japonaise fascinante et Nagoya elle même a une énergie unique et positive (et la nourriture est exceptionnelle). J'espère bientôt partager encore une fois mes expériences dans cette super ville!

ある寒い土曜日の朝、ほんの近所にある役所まで散歩のつも りだったのに、名古屋城の鮮やかな緑色の屋根瓦と老木が茂 る山頂を目にしたとき、僕の足はそちらの方向へ吸い寄せら れてしまいました。門からお城までの道のりはとても長く、石 碑や茶室などのたくさんの名所や歴史を感じさせる展示を見 ることができました。面白いことに、城の基礎部分の大方は第 二次世界大戦の戦禍に巻き込まれたにもかかわらず今でも きれいに保たれています。
Alors que le printemps tarde à venir à Montréal, il est en pleine éclosion au Japon. Les sakura, sans doute un des symboles les plus reconnus, sont en fleurs et sont à l’honneur des nombreux matsuri de ce mois. Bien que les sakura soient un sujet très populaire, j’ai choisi pour ce mois-ci de vous présenter le yabusame.
江戸時代の初代将軍、徳川家康によって1７世紀に築城され、 名古屋城は今日に至るまで名古屋の人々の生活に深く根ざし ています。徳川幕府が倒され、将軍体制に関係するあらゆる ものが破壊された明治維新までは、政治の重要な中心地とな っていました。そして、ありがたいことに、 この見事な遺跡は国 宝として残されることになりました。
Le yabusame est une forme de tire à l’arc pratiquée par les samouraïs datant de l’époque Kamakura, il n’est donc pas surprenant qu’une démonstration de cette technique se tiendra dans la ville du même nom le dimanche 21 avril. À cette époque, c’était une forme d’entraînement militaire autant qu’un symbole shinto mais, maintenant, c’est réservé aux matsuri printaniers et automnales. C’est au temple Tsurugaoka de Kamakura que se tiendra la démonstration. Ce temple, a l’histoire divine autant que lugubre, est un des sanctuaires shinto des plus importants et est dédié à Hachiman Daimyoujin –dieu de la guerre!

Le tir à l’arc au Japon remonte à l’époque Joumon et l’arc lui-même est un symbole très important, présent dans les représentations de l’empereur Jimmu. Le yabusame incorpore plusieurs techniques dont des talents équestres, les archers devant contrôler leurs chevaux simplement qu’avec leurs jambes puisqu’ils ont besoin de leurs deux mains pour tirer. Les archers doivent parcourir une distance d’environ 255 mètres et tirer sur trois cibles carrées, faites en cèdre; Les cibles sont censées représenter un opposant en yoroi (armure traditionnelle des samourai avec un espace vide sous la visière du casque). Ceux qui pratiquent le yabusame sont aujourd’hui rares et c’est une marque de grand honneur que de pouvoir assister à une démonstration. Une démonstration fut donnée au Royaume-Uni pour le prince Charles; Je me demande ce que le pays du célèbre et légendaire Robin Hood en avait pensé! Je vous encourage donc à vivre une expérience aussi fascinante si vous êtes au Japon ou, du moins, visionner Les Sept "Samouraïs" ou "Kagemusha". Connais-
English Although spring is always late in Montreal it is in full bloom in Japan. Sakura are open and being one of the most recognized symbols they are at the heart of this month’s matsuri. Sakura may be a very popular subject however, for this month, I have chosen to introduce you to yabusame. Yabusame is an archery technique practiced by samourai during the Kamakura era and it is therefore no wonder that a display will be held in the town of the same name on Sunday April 21st. During this era it was a form of military training as well as a shinto symbol but is today reserved for the spring and autumn matsuri. The demonstration will be held at the Tsurugaoka temple in Kamakura. This temple, with a divine and macabre history, is one of the most important Shinto sanctuaries and is dedicated to Hachiman Daimyoujin – god of war!

I encourage you to live such a fascinating experience if you are in Japan, or at the very least to watch Seven "Samourai" or ''Kagemusha.'' Do you know of a similar event in Montreal or Canada?

Tokyo, Paris, Dakar, Rabat, and Montreal – the towns I have lived in. I feel attached to each, but when I get homesick for France, I can go to Le pain dans les voiles, the bakery in the Villeray area of Montreal. I agree with this quote by the novelist, Miguel de Cervantes, “All sorrows are less with bread,” so I stuff my mouth with freshly baked bread. The first Le pain dans les voiles bakery is located in MontSaint-Hilaire, in the suburbs of Montreal. The second store, which just opened in December, is right here in Villeray! Local people already love the store, as it provides breads to many famous stores in Montreal: L’épicerie fine Latina, Ritz Carleton, l’Hôtel Le Sofitel, Patisserie De Farine et D’eau Fraîche, Maestro, Olivier Potier, and so on. Mr. Martin Falardeau (owner and baker), and Ms. Martin Falardeau (baker) represented Canada in the 3rd World Bread Contest (le 3eme Mondial du Pain) held in SaintÉtienne in 2011, and their baguette received 2nd place. They are planning to participate in the 4th World Bread Contest in vantes, « Toute tristesse diminue avec du pain », alors je me remplis avec du pain fraichement sorti du four. Ils planifient participer au 4ème Concours Mondial du Pain à 2013 aussi. Avec le support de ses fidèles clients, les boulangers se préparent pour le défi! Je suis certaine qu’ils auront de bons résultats cette fois-ci aussi!

Français En novembre 2012, le groupe Monkey Majik et les Yoshida Brothers, artistes jouant du tsugaru-shamisen[1], ont fait une tournée nordaméricaine en se produisant à New-York, Toronto et Ottawa. Nous avons interviewé ces deux groupes via Skype lors de leur passage à Toronto. Ci-dessous, MM désigne le groupe Monkey Majik et Yoshida désigne les Yoshida Brothers. ◎ Quel est votre plus beau souvenir jusqu’à maintenant ? MM : Quand nous avons joué, en 2009, devant Leurs Majestés l’Empereur et l’Impératrice du Japon alors en visite au Canada. Nous étions très émus. Yoshida : En 2003, à Los Angeles, lors de nos débuts aux Etats-Unis, quand une foule de 1 500 personnes nous a fait une ovation. Nous en avions la chair de poule ! ◎ Vous êtes-vous habitués à vos rôles respectifs d’ambassadeur ? (Ambassadeur du village de Noboribestu pour les Yoshida Brothers, et ambassadeur pour le projet Kizuna pour Monkey Majik). Yoshida : Comme notre village natal est à l’origine de notre musique, nous voulons transmettre sa beauté aux personnes de
l’étranger. MM : C’est un honneur d’être le symbole des échanges Canada-Japon. Désormais, nous souhaitons continuer d’endosser ce rôle important. ◎ Quel est le concert à l’étranger qui vous a le plus marqué ? Yoshida Kenichi : Notre performance en compagnie d’un groupe de flamenco en Espagne. Yoshida Ryoichiro : Les concerts devant les spectateurs nord-américains, qui réagissent de façon très directe. C’est très agréable de jouer devant une telle audience. MM (Dick) : Taiwan, où nous nous sommes produits de nombreuses fois. L’apogée du concert était extraordinaire. MM (Tax) : Taiwan pour moi également. Nous y sommes allés après le tremblement de terre pour les remercier de toute l’aide apportée. C’est comme si nous n’étions plus des étrangers, comme si nous ne faisions plus qu’un.

Last November, the music group Monkey Majik and the Tsugaru-jamisen[1] artists Yoshida Brothers went on a North American tour and visited New York, Toronto and Ottawa. Here is the interview conducted via Skype with both groups while their stopover in Toronto (hereafter referred to as MM for Monkey Majik and Yoshida for the Yoshida Brother).
MM: It is an honor to be a symbol of the friendship between Canada and Japan. We will keep on playing this important role from here on.
◎ What was the most impressive performance of your musical careers? MM: It was the performance we made in front of their Majesties the Emperor and the Empress in Canada, in 2009. It proved to be a very touching experience for us. Yoshida: When we made our debut in America in 2003, the entire audience of 1500 stood up all at once at our live performance in Los Angeles. We had goose bumps. ◎ The Yoshida Brothers are the Noboribetsu Furusato (hometown) ambassadors, while Monkey Majik is the Goodwill (Kizuna) ambassador. Could you tell us a little bit more about these initiatives? Yoshida: The roots of our music reside in our hometown, so we would like people

◎ Which overseas session touched you the most? Kenichi Yoshida: The session we did with a flamenco group in Spain. Ichiro Yoshida: The North American audience directly responded to us. The performance was really pleasant. MM (Dick): A session in Taiwan; a city we visited a few times. We really got into the swing of things and were able to offer a wonderful live performance. MM (Tax): I would also go with Taiwan! The point of our visit was to express our appreciation for the tremendous support that was offered after the earthquake. It seemed that we became united as if both our countries were the same. MM (Blaise): This North American Tour is the best for me. The audience is the liveliest I have ever seen. MM (Maynard): This tour is the best since
we are accompanied by the Yoshida Brothers. They are wonderful co-stars. ◎ Tell us a little bit about the perception you have of each other. Yoshida: Since we performed for the first time in 2007, they have broken the wall surrounding the notion of “Japanese Instruments”, and in a good sense. They are our best friends. MM: Because our central concept is similar, our live performances together are always splendid. This collaboration is a dream come true! ◎ Is there a message you would like to transmit to Montrealers? Yoshida & MM: We would really like to give a live performance in Montreal. Please keep an eye open for it in the near future! [1] A genre of shamisen music originating from the Aomori prefecture, situated in the northernmost area of the main Japanese island.

世界中の人々に愛さているお菓子チョコレート。そのチョコレート に魅了されたのが、今回ご紹介する絵本作家、はんだのどかさん だ。 『チョコレートがおいしいわけ』は、彼女にとって記念すべき最初 の絵本。 フランス語、英語の出版社を探すべく、現在モントリオール に滞在中である。 ―「チョコレートがおいしいわけ」 を出版するに至ったエピソードは？ アイディアを思いついてから出版するまでに４年ほどかかりまし た。その間にあらゆるカカオ、チョコレートについて本を読み、 ショ コラティエ、工房、チョコレート工場を訪ねたり、アフリカのガーナ にも、カカオの実や現地の方々の暮らしをこの目で見たくて取材 旅行に行きました。自分のできることを全てやり尽くして絵本を仕 上げたい、 という思いが強くありました。 この絵本を通して、 まるで 引き寄せられるかのようにたくさんの方との出会いがあり、 もはや 自分一人だけのものではなく、惜しみなく力を注いで頂いた方々 のものでもあると思っています。 -全世界を回って絵本朗読演奏会をしたい理由は？ チョコレートは世界でもっとも親しまれているお菓子です。 しかし、 そのできるまでの過程は意外にもあまり知られていません。そこに は驚くようなプロセスがいくつもあります。チョコレートに限らず、 自分が口にしている食べ物が、 どこから来たのか、 どんなつながり の末に自分の元に届いているのか。そして食べ物には、みな、命が 入っているということ―それを想像することは、さまざまな意味で とても大切なことだと思います。音楽と一緒に絵本を読むことで絵 本の世界が立体化し、 また広がった世界を楽しんで頂けます。 カカ オの生産地の現地の様子を伝え、生産地とチョコレートを食べる 国の方々の思いをつなげたいという思いもあります。 この絵本を通 して国と国がつながっていくことを願っています。 ―これからの夢は？ この絵本がフランス語、英語、世界中の言語で出版され、たくさん の方に楽しんで頂くことです。ガーナに絵本を持って戻り、子供達 に読み語りをすることもひとつの夢です。オーケストラ （チョコレー ト交響曲） と一緒に朗読会をすることも、いつかできたらと思って います。 「今、一番大切な力は、目にみえないつながりを想像する力だと思 う」 と言うはんださん。モントリオールでも朗読コンサートを行って、 子供達にこの絵本に込めた夢を伝えている。 ひとりの小さな一粒の夢が、世界をつないでいく夢へと広がってい くことを願ってやまない。

People love chocolate all around the world. A person who is fascinated by chocolate is picture book author Nodoka Handa, the subject of this piece. ”Why Chocolate is So Delicious” is her commemorable first picture book. She is visiting Montreal now to find a publisher in both French and English. - What is the story behind the publication of ”Why Chocolate is So Delicious”? From the time I got the idea, it took about four years to be able to publish it. Meanwhile, I read various books about cocoa and chocolate, and visited chocolatiers, ateliers, and chocolate factories. I also took a research trip to Ghana in Africa to see cocoa fruits and local people's lives with my own eyes. I wanted to finish this picture book after I did everything I could to make it the best book possible. Through the writing of this book, I had many encounters, almost as if I was pulled towards them. So I feel that this book is not just for me anymore, but also for those people who generously helped me along the way. - Why would you like to do “book reading concerts” all around the world? Chocolate is one of the most loved sweets in the world. But the chocolate-making process is not so well known. There are J’avais un désir très fort de terminer ce livre en faisant tous les efforts possibles que je pouvais faire. En travaillant pour ce livre, j’ai rencontré un grand nombre de personnes. C’était comme si ce livre a attiré tous ces gens. Alors, je considère que ce livre appartient non seulement à moi mais aussi à ceux qui y ont collaboré et mis des efforts. Pourquoi voulez-vous offrir des concerts - lecture partout dans le monde? Malgré que le chocolat soit la sucrerie la plus populaire dans le monde, son processus de fabrication reste méconnu. Il y a un certain nombre de processus très intéressants et surprenants. Il est important d’imaginer, non seulement pour le chocolat, mais aussi pour toutes les nourritures, d’où il vient et comment il arrive jusqu'à notre bouche, et surtout nous ne pouvons pas oublier que la nourriture a une âme. La musique ajoute à la lecture une autre profondeur et nous permet de réaliser certaines pensées que l'on n'a pas le temps de développer dans la vie quotidienne. J’ai aussi un désir de transmettre comment la vie des gens du lieu de production de cacao, et de relier des souhaits des fabriquant et

When it comes to all food--not only chocolate--I think it's really important to imagine where that food you are eating comes from, what kind of process it went through to come to you, and also to realize that all food has life (whether plant or animal) in it. Reading a book with music would make the world of a picture book three-dimensional, and people can enjoy this expanded world. My intention is to let people know about cocoa-producing areas, and connect the thoughts of the people producing and consuming chocolate all around the world. I hope countries can connect through this picture book. - What is your dream moving forward? That this book is published in French, English, and many other languages, so that many people can enjoy reading it. It is also one of my dreams to bring this book back to Ghana and read it to children there. I wish to have a recital with an orchestra (a chocolate symphony!) someday. Ms. Handa says, “The most important ability nowadays is to be able to imagine an invisible connection.” She does book readings for children in Montreal to pass on the dream she presents in her picture book. I wish this one person's one little piece of dream will become a dream that connects the world.

Pendant son séjour à Montréal, elle a donné un concert-lecture pour transmettre ces rêves qu’elle a mis dans ce livre aux enfants J'espère sincèrement que ce petit morceau de rêve d’une personne se développe en un rêve qui relie le monde tout entier.

Le chocolat est une sucrerie aimé par les gens partout dans le monde. Mme Handa, l’écrivain et l’illustratrice du ce livre fait partie des personnes fascinées par ce chocolat. Son premier livre d’illustration est intitulé : " Le secret derrière de la saveur du chocolat " . Pour trouver un éditeur en français et en anglais, elle est actuellement en séjour à Montréal. Quelle est le cheminement qui a conduit à la publication de ce livre? Il m'a fallu environ quatre ans pour arriver à le publier à partir de l’idée de départ. Pendant ces quatre ans, j’ai lu tous les livres possible sur le cacao et le chocolat et visité nombre de chocolatiers, d’ateliers et des usines de chocolat. J'ai aussi voyagé au Ghana, en Afrique, parce que je voulais voir de mes propres yeux les fruits de cacao et la vie des gens locaux.

I interviewed Mitchell about this amazing event! — Mitchell, what makes Cirquantique unique?

What makes Cirquantique unique is the show's atmosphere. It's a blend of burlesque's hollers, circus' sense of awe, extravagantly costumed guests and whatever else might be thrown in. A difficult question. Our last show blew me away. The artists, guests, venue staff, security, everyone, were so happy and positive at the end of the evening, it was almost unbelievable. — Please give the message to the Montrealer those who has never been to Cirquantique! At our last show, a guest asked me something along the lines of: "If I leave to have a smoke, can I come back in?" My answer should have been: "As long as you enjoy good looking people, sexy performances, hooting, hollering and maybe a couple shots of whisky." This is not your average show!

A sugar cabin (also called sap house, sugar shack or cabane à sucre in French) is a small house located in the forest where sap is collected from maple trees in order to obtain the famous maple syrup. During spring time when Maple syrup is flowing, many families and guests visit family owned- sugar cabins and enjoy activities that include sleigh-riding, tours of the grounds, eating a variety of typical dishes cooked in maple syrup. These dishes range from ham, bacon, pancakes and even sausages or scrambled eggs. Making maple syrup is a North American tradition.
