「日本の小学校に英語教育は必要か」――このテーマ、数十年前から日本国内で 議論が交わされてきた。 ここ最近はいつもに増して熱い討論が行われている。それもそ のはず、今年度から公立小学校における英語授業が「完全必修化」 されたのだ。 「完全必修化」 とはどういうことか？以前日本の小学校では、英語の授業や英語に触れ る機会が、特別活動や国際理解のための一環として設けられてきたのだが、 これからは 算数や国語と同じく一つの教科として導入されることになった。つまり、“必ず勉強しなけ ればならない”教科になった。文部科学省が教科ごとに教える内容を定める 「学習指導 要領」の中で、高校では教師が英語で授業を教えたり、中学校でも使用する英単語数を 増やすなど内容の改訂が行われ、国を挙げて英語に力を入れようとする様子が見て取 れる。個人でも、英語学習への投資は大きい。人気の英会話スクールや英語学習CD、ネ ット授業など、ビジネスの武器として社会人が自主的に学ぶことも多い。 話を冒頭のテーマに戻すと、国内では肯定派と否定派にそれぞれ意見が分かれている。 「幼いうちから英語を教えて早期習得を図る」、 「日本語がおろそかになってしまう」など 意見は様々だが、 この問題、当然ながらメリット・デメリットがあるようだ。 ただ、 日本という島国に住んでいると、近年のグローバリゼーションは感じつつも、やは りモントリオールに住んでいた時と比べれば、 日常生活の中で英語を使う機会は圧倒的 に少ない。何のために英語を学び、 どうやって日常生活と結びつけるのか、 日本の英語 授業でその答えを示すことは難しいと感じることもある。 ちなみに、現在著者は教員免許 取得のために教育実習に参加し、実際に教育現場に関わる機会をいただいているが、教 室の中には臨場感がない。文法の解説と、教科書の英文の和訳、 その繰り返しが本当に 生徒の役に立っているのだろうか、 とふと思うことがある。 小学校で英語授業を必修にするのならば、英語を学ぶことで世界が広がること、新しい 価値観を養えることに特に配慮して指導する必要があるだろう。あなたが日本に住んで いたら、 このテーマに賛成、それとも反対ですか？

English Education in Japan
“Should students in Japan study English from primary school?” This topic has been in discussion in Japan for the past ten years. Today, the debate is more intense than ever since English has become a compulsory subject in Japan's primary school system as of this fiscal year. What does “English as a compulsory subject” mean exactly? It means that all Japanese students are required to learn English on the same level as Japanese and Math at school. Prior to last year, some occasional activities in English had been introduced as a part of an intercultural education program. As of this fiscal year, English is part of the general class schedule. The curriculum guideline issued by the Ministry of Education clearly demonstrates that the government intends to strengthen the English skills of students. For example, high school teachers must now teach certain subjects in English and junior high school students are required to broaden their English vocabulary. In general, English is a popular continuing education subject amongst adults. The Japanese spend a great deal of money to acquire English skills with the intention of improving their business performance. Common learning methods are English programs taught by major language schools, online courses and audio lessons on CD-ROM. In Japan, “English as a compulsory subject in primary school” has its share of detractors and supporters. Some would say that “there are benefits to learning English at a young age,” while others claim that “learning two languages at the same time increases the risk of affecting the students’ mastery of Japanese.” These different opinions show that the issue has both advantages and disadvantages. Contrary to my experience living in Montreal, I seldom had the opportunity to converse in English in Japan despite today’s globalization. In such an environment, teaching English in school can be a challenge. We have yet to find solutions on how to demonstrate the use and convenience of acquiring English as a second language in Japan. To talk a little bit about myself: I am currently pursuing a teaching certificate. During my studies, I had several opportunities to take part in school activities and, unfortunately, I found that today’s English classes lack academic excitement. I wonder if it is all that relevant for students to go through repetitive lessons on English grammar rules and comprehension exercises using textbook sentences. Under the new curriculum which now includes English classes, it is essential to help students realize that being able to speak English will add many benefits to their lives and broaden their view of the world. « Les étudiants japonais devraient-ils étudier l’anglais dès l'école primaire? » Cette question a été débattue au Japon depuis les dix dernières années. Aujourd'hui, ce sujet est d’autant plus chaud, que les cours d’anglais sont devenus obligatoires dans les écoles primaires cette année. Qu’est-ce que l’anglais comme matière obligatoire implique vraiment? Cela signifie que tous les étudiants japonais devront apprendre l'anglais au même niveau que le japonais et les mathématiques. Avant l'année dernière, quelques activités occasionnelles en anglais avaient été présentées comme parties d'un programme éducatif interculturel. Depuis cette année, l'anglais fait partie du programme de classe général. La directive du programme d'études publiée par le ministère de l'Éducation démontre clairement que le gouvernement a l'intention de renforcer l’apprentissage de l’anglais chez les étudiants. Par exemple, les professeurs doivent maintenant enseigner certains sujets en anglais et les étudiants sont priés d'élargir leur vocabulaire anglais. Généralement l'anglais est un sujet populaire de formation chez les adultes. Les Japonais dépensent beaucoup d'argent pour améliorer leur anglais afin d’accroitre leur performance en affaire. Les modes d’apprentissage les plus communs sont les programmes enseignés dans les écoles de langues ainsi que les cours en ligne et les leçons audio sur le disque compact. Au Japon, l’anglais comme sujet obligatoire à l'école primaire a sa part de détracteurs et de défenseurs. Certains croient qu’il est avantageux d’apprendre l'anglais à un jeune âge, alors que d'autres affirment que l’apprentissage de deux langues en même temps, augmente le risque d'affecter la maîtrise du japonais. Ce qui nous démontre que cette mesure a des avantages et des inconvénients. Contrairement à mon expérience de vie à Montréal, j'ai rarement eu l'occasion de converser en anglais au Japon en dépit de la globalisation. Dans ces conditions, l’enseignement de l’anglais à l'école devient un défi. Il y a encore du travail à faire pour démontrer les bienfaits de l’apprentissage de l'anglais comme deuxième langue au Japon.

Personnellement, je complète actuellement un certificat en enseignement. Pendant mes études, j'ai eu plusieurs occasions de participer aux activités scolaires et, malheureusement, j'ai constaté que les classes anglaises d'aujourd'hui manquent d’enthousiasme. Je me demande si les techniques d’enseignement sont appropriées pour que les étudiants, qui passent en répétition les différentes règles de grammaire anglaise à travers des manuels d’exercices. Sous le nouveau programme d'études qui inclut maintenant les classes anglaises, il est essentiel d'aider des étudiants à se rendre compte que pouvoir parler anglais sera avantageux pour eux et élargira leur vue du monde. A Love Affair with Japan
Shall we… fish?

I can still remember how it felt all those years ago in Japan, as I stood, clad in a kimono, mesmerized as I watched my Japanese sensei dance. Her meticulous movements were deliberate and unhurried. She could make time stand still. And yet, as slow as this particular dance was, it was far from simple. For me, the difficulty lay in the absolute perfection required of each and every move, from the slightest turn of her head to the almost indistinguishable flick of the fan in her hand. Not to mention the need to portray an innate femininity, one which may no longer exist on the western side of the world. I’ll never forget a Japanese friend’s laughter when I, the inelegant foreigner, slumped down on my chair one day after practice, one leg slung over the other, my kimono pulled in all the wrong directions... When I first took up the oh-so-feminine traditional fan dance, I would never have imagined that years later I’d be part of a Japanese dance group in Toronto, one whose choreographies did not require the elegance of a geisha, but instead the brute force of a sumo wrestler. And the pain tolerance of a samurai. For days after my first practice, my inner thighs screamed silently each time I used the stairs, sat down, stood up, or simply walked down the street. But what was initially a torturous pain soon subsided into a dull ache. Since January of this year, I’ve been a proud member of a very cool Toronto-based Japanese dance troupe, Sakuramai. In my lifetime, I’ve taken a lot of dance (from ballet as a tiny tot, to jazz and tap in elementary school, to belly dancing as a teen, to the swing lessons I enrolled in just this spring), but I can honestly say that this type of dance is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. Maybe it’s because Soran was a dance originally performed by Japanese fishermen in Hokkaido. Or maybe it’s the turns and jumps that are followed by elephant-like landings. Or is it all those sumo-esque squats? Whatever the reason may be, this ‘unfeminine’ dance wonderfully mimics the daily rituals of a Japanese fisherman. Each practice, I find myself spearing my underwater prey, or pulling nets, heavy with fish, out of the water. But don’t be fooled by what sounds like ultra masculine moves! Soran translates into a thing of real beauty when performed on stage. Half a year later, I’ve almost conquered the moves that initially seemed so difficult. And this July 15th, I will be joining the rest of the Sakuramai team members at my very first performance at the Markham Theatre for Performing Arts. I’m extremely excited to be a part of a show featuring the famous Japanese taiko drummers, Yakudo. (www.yakudo.com) My lovely team members include our dance teacher (Emiko Tanaka,) the founder of Sakuramai (Yurika Hinkle,) the dancer who initially invited me to join (Kozumi Woolford,) and several other amazing women (and yes, men!) I am truly honoured to be performing with a group of such talented individuals. If you happen to be in the Markham area mid month, please come and watch! Si on...pêchait?
Je me souviens encore comment c'était après toutes ces années au Japon, debout, vêtue d'un kimono, médusée de regarder ma sensei japonaise danser. Ses mouvements méticuleux étaient continus et tranquilles. Elle pouvait arrêter le temps. Aussi lente que cette danse en particulier puisse être, elle était, pourtant, loin d'être simple. Pour moi, la difficulté repose sur la perfection absolue requise pour chaque geste, du moindre mouvement de la tête au petit coup presque indiscernable de l'éventail dans la main. Sans parler du besoin d'illustrer une féminité naturelle, une qui n'existe peut-être plus du côté ouest du monde. Je n'oublierai jamais le rire d'une amie japonaise lorsque, moi, l'étrangère inélégante, me suis affalée sur ma chaise un jour après l'entraînement, une jambe jetée sur l'autre, mon kimono tiré dans tous les sens. Quand je m'étais au début lancée dans la danse traditionnelle de l'éventail oh! si féminine, je n'aurais jamais pensé que des années plus tard je ferais partie d'un groupe de danse japonaise à Toronto, dont les chorégraphies n'exigent pas l'élégance d'une geisha, mais plutôt de la force brute d'un sumo. Et la tolérance à la douleur d'un samourai. Pendant plusieurs jours après mon premier entraînement, l'intérieur de mes cuisses criaient silencieusement à chaque fois que je prenais les escaliers, m'asseyais, me mettais debout, ou marchais tout simplement dans la rue. Mais ce qui était au début une souffrance tortueuse bientôt s'apaisa en une douleur sourde. Cette année, depuis janvier, je fais fièrement partie de Sakuramai, troupe de danse japonaise très cool basée à Toronto. Dans ma vie, j'ai appris beaucoup de danse (du ballet en étant bambin, au jazz et aux claquettes au primaire, à la danse du ventre à l'adolescence, aux leçons de swing que je me suis inscrite seulement ce printemps). Mais je peux dire honnêtement que ce genre de danse ne ressemble en rien à ce que j'ai connu auparavant. C'est peut-être parce que Soran est une danse originalement pratiquée par des pêcheurs japonais à Hokkaido. Ou peutêtre est-ce les tours et les sauts suivis par des réceptions éléphantesques? Ou est-ce tous ces accroupissements sumoesques? Quelle que soit la raison, cette danse « masculine » mimique magnifiquement les rituels quotidiens d'un pêcheur japonais. Je me vois, à chaque entraînement, harponner ma proie sous-marine ou tirer des filets, chargés de poissons, hors de l'eau. Ne soyez pas pour autant dupé par ce qui semblent être des gestes ultra masculins! Soran se traduit en une vraie beauté lors d'une représentation sur scène. Six mois plus tard, j'avais presque dominé les mouvements qui semblaient initialement si difficiles. Et ce 15 juillet, je joindrai le reste des membres de l'équipe Sakuramai à ma première interprétation au Markham Theatre for Performing Arts. Je suis extrêmement enthousiasmée de faire partie d'un spectacle figurant les fameux batteurs de taiko japonais, Yakudo. (www. yakudo.com) Les charmants membres de mon équipe comprennent notre professeure de danse (Emiko Tanaka), la fondatrice de Sakuramai (Yurika Hinkle), la danseuse qui m'a initié à me joindre au groupe (Kozumi Woolford), et plusieurs autres femmes incroyables (et oui, hommes)! シャル・ウィ・・・漁獲？
何年も前の事ですが、着物を着込んだ私が日本人の先生の踊りを 夢見心地で眺めていたあの感覚を、今でも鮮明に思い出す事がで きます。彼女の細やかな動きは緻密でゆったりとしていました。彼女 は時間を止める力を秘めていました。そして、一見ゆったりとしたこ の踊りは、簡素とは程遠いものでした。私にとって困難だったのは、 僅かな首の傾げ方から、手に持つ扇子の微細な動きまで、所作の細 部にまで完璧を求められる事でした。 もちろん、秘められた女性らし さを描く事もその一部で、 これはもはや西側諸国には存在しない性 質と言えるでしょう。ある日の練習後、椅子にドスンと座り足を組み、 着物のひどく着崩れたこの麗しくない外国人の私を見て、 日本人の 友人に笑われた事は痛い記憶として残っています。 私が、 このなんとも女性らしい伝統的な扇子踊りを始めた時には、 何年か後、 トロントの日本踊りの一員になっているとは想像すらし ていませんでした。 しかも、芸者の様な優美さではなく、力士の様な 猛々しい振付けと、侍の様な痛みへの忍耐を求められるとは・・・。初 レッスン後の数日間、階段の上り下りの時、座った時、立った時、立 ちあがったり、道を横切った時、私の内腿は密かに悲鳴を上げてい ました。 しかし、初め拷問の様だった痛みは、いつの間にか鈍い痛 みに変わっていました。 今年の１月より、 トロントを拠点とした日本の踊りのクールなグルー プ「サクラマイ」の一員となった事を誇りに思っています。 これまで、 様々なダンスを習ってきましたが（幼児期のバレエに始まり、小学生 時代はジャズとタップダンス、ティーン時代はベリーダンス、そして 今春はスウィングダンスに申し込んだばかり）、はっきり言えるのは、 このジャンルの踊りは、 これまで経験してきたものとはまるっきり異 なる、 という事です。 「ソーラン」が、元々北海道の漁師の踊りだったからかもしれませ ん。 もしくは、 ターンやジャンプ後の着地がまるで象の様な迫力に 満ちているからかもしれません。それとも、力士の四股の様なしゃ がみでしょうか。いずれにせよ、 この「女性らしくない」踊りは、 日本 の漁師の日々を鮮やかに再現しているものと言えるでしょう。練習 の度、海底の獲物を仕留めていたり、大漁の網を引き揚げていたり する自分を楽しんでいます。 でも、 「超・雄々しい」動きには惑わされ ないで下さい！ソーランは舞台上で美しく映えます。 半年経ち、当初困難と思われた動きをほとんど制覇する事が出来ま した。そして、今年の7月15日、他の「サクラマイ」 メンバーと共に、マ ーカムシアターで、初のお披露目をする事となりました。和太鼓集団 「躍童」主演のショーの舞台に上がれるのが、今からワクワクしてい ます。www.yakudo.com ステキなチームメンバーの構成は、踊り指導員（タナカ・エミコ）、 「サクラマイ」の創始者（ヒンクル・ユリカ）、私をこのチームに誘っ てくれたダンサー（ウルフォード・コズミ） と、他数名の素晴らしい女 性（もちろん男性も！） で、才能豊かなメンバーそれぞれと共演でき る事を心から感謝しています。 もし、 月中頃マーカムエリアにいる様でしたら、ぜひお越し頂き、私 たちのパフォーマンスをご覧ください！チケットは$30-35。開演は午 後7時です。絶対楽しめますよ！

I have believed “Dawn is the very scenery in summer.” In summer there is the sun's dazzlingly radiating heat, the wide and endless sky, white clouds widely gushing up, plants opening their branches and leaves, and a lot of summer energy. This season, if you decide to do something that you don't usually do, you will have memories to remember for the rest of your life, I intentionally think that it will be connected with the meaning of life. I hope this summer will be irreplaceable for you.

C'est le temps de faire quelque chose qu'on ne prend pas toujours le temps de faire. L'été est arrivé. Déjà, la ville montre des signes d'effervescence et tout le monde déborde de joie à l'idée de commencer cette nouvelle saison. Pour ma part, j'ai décidé que ma résolution pour cet été sera : « Le temps de faire quelque chose qu'on ne prend pas toujours le temps de faire ». Pour commencer, je suis allée à la plateforme d'observation sur le Mont Royal juste avant l'aurore.

夏が来た。 街中が浮き足立って、誰もがまたこの季節を迎えるこ とができた喜びに満ち溢れている。私はというと、今年の夏 のテーマを「非日常的な行動を起こすとき」 と決めた。その 手始めに、朝日が昇る前にMONT-ROYALの展望台に出向 く。 ほら、やっぱり、私の勘が当たった。鳥達のさえずりが木霊【 こだま】 して、ひんやりとした空気が木立の奥から沸き出で て私をすり抜けていく。ふと視線をはずした先には、朝露を 浴びた夏草が紫色の涼しげな花をつけていた。そうして歩 いて行く道の向こうに広がったモントリオールの街とセン ト・ローレンス河、遠く霞む地平線、空の切れ端がオレンジ 色にショートしだして、やがて大きな太陽があがってきた。今 日という一日が刻々と明けていく。非日常的な光景が目の前 で色を変え、私が生きている世界のすばらしさをおしげもな くさらしてくれている。 枕草子で清少納言は、“春はあけぼの、夏は夜”と唱えたが、 私はずっと“夏こそ、あけぼの”だと思っている。ぎらぎら熱を 発する太陽、広々と果てしない空、大きく湧き上がる白い雲、 枝葉を広げる草木、夏が持つ大きなエネルギー、 そんな夏に 何かひとつ非日常的な行動を起こしたことが一生の思い出と なるのなら、 それこそが生きている意義に繋がるのではない かとふっと思う。 今年の夏が、あなたにとってかげがえのない夏になります ように。

Time to do something that you don’t usually do. Summer has arrived. The whole town shows signs of restlessness, and everybody is brimming with joy over the arrival of this season. Me? I decided this summer’s resolution is going to be: “Time to do something that I don’t usually do.” As a first step, I went to the observation platform on Mount Royal just before the sunrise. “There you are!” As I thought, my 6th sense was correct. Echoes of birds chattering, and fresh air came out from the depths of the clump of trees as I passed by. I happened to look away and saw that summer grass with morning dew and noticed cool purple flowers. And there were the city of Montreal and the St Laurence River, located beyond the path I was walking on. The horizon that I saw far away, was hazy, a break in the clouds started changing colours and soon the big sun woke up. A day, so called “today,” broke every moment. The scene that I've never taken the time to see before, changed its color in front of me, and freely exposed the beauty of the world in which I live. In Makura no sôshi (The Bedside Book,) Sei Shonagon said, “If you talk about Spring, it should be dawn, and if summer, it should be night.” However, for a long time,
« Tu es là ! » , ai-je pensé. Mon 6e sens avait raison. Je pouvais entendre l'écho du chant des oiseaux et ressentir la fraîcheur de l'air qui provenait des bosquets. Puis j'ai regardé l'herbe sous mes pieds. Je pouvais y distinguer les perles de rosée du matin et de jolies fleurs pourpres. Au bout du sentier où je marchais, il y avait la ville de Montréal et le fleuve St-Laurent. Je voyais à l'horizon brumeux, un morceau de ciel qui a commencé à changer de couleur et peu de temps après, le soleil s'est réveillé. À chaque moment, le jour appelé « aujourd'hui » prend sa place. Cette scène que je n'avais jamais pris le temps d'admirer avant, changeait constamment de couleur sous mes yeux en exposant la beauté du monde dans lequel je vis.

Dans Makura no sôshi (Livre de chevet) Sei Shonagon a dit : « Si vous parlez du printemps, il faut que ce soit l'aurore et si vous parler de l'été, il faut que ce soit la nuit ». Cependant, pour moi, l'aurore a longtemps représenté un paysage d'été. L'été, il y a la chaleur du soleil brillant, le ciel infini, des nuages moelleux, des plantes qui tendent leurs feuilles et beaucoup d'énergie estivale. Cette saison, si vous décidez de faire quelque chose que vous ne faites pas habituellement, vous aurez des souvenirs pour le reste de votre vie. Sincèrement, je crois que cela sera connecté avec la signification même de la vie. J'espère que cet été sera inoubliable pour vous.

Hibiscus Hibiscus is a beautiful red flower and mainly grows in the southern hemisphere. Its sepal part can be used to create an amazing herbal tea. It’s bitter taste states a proper presence in terms of citric acid, an effective tonic. The hibiscus flower also contains iron and potassium; hence it is appropriate for the summer temperatures as it will cool the body down. It will also limit sweating. Brier rose The berries of the brier rose are known for their high content in vitamin, particularly in vitamin C. Vitamin C is a substance useful in managing stress on a chemical level. Let’s also mention that smoking tobacco destroys the vitamin C in one’s body. Also, it is easily extruded from the body since it is soluble in water; we should therefore make sure to ingest vitamin C via a multitude of sources regularly. Mate It is one of the three most common and drinked teas in the world. It is mainly cultivated in Southern America. Mate is rarely included in herbal teas because of its caffeine content. Therefore, refrain from drinking mate if you don’t handle caffeine well. Mate contains iron, calcium, potassium and a lot of other vitamins. Since it is commonly drinked in regions of the world that present hot temperatures, mate is considered to have virtues that can help to tolerate and to function in such temperatures.

Le Japon voit le début de sa saison des pluies, un peu plus tôt comparativement à la moyenne. En contrepartie, le Canada, déjà en plein été, ne présente aucune saison des pluies. Vous sentez-vous parfois épuisé l’été ? Il est commun de consommer beaucoup de boisson froide en été, mais cette fois-ci, essayer d’opter pour une tisane naturelle au lieu des typiques boissons ou jus sucrés. Les tisanes contiennent beaucoup d’éléments, tels les minéraux, qui sont essentiels au métabolisme. Je profite de l’occasion pour vous présenter quelques thés qui sont particulièrement recommandés pendant la période estivale. Hibiscus L’hibiscus est une belle fleur rouge provenant des régions sud-équatoriales. Sa partie sépale peut-être utiliser pour concocter une tisane. Son goût aigre laisse présager une présence significative d’acide citrique, un tonique efficace. L’hibiscus contient aussi du fer et du potassium ; cette tisane est donc appropriée pour les températures estivales ainsi que limiter la sudation. Églantier Les baies de l’églantier sont connues pour leur haute teneur en vitamine, particulièrement en vitamine C. La vitamine C est une substance utilisée pour diminuer le stress. Ajoutons que fumer la cigarette détruit la vitamine C. De plus, elle est facilement extrudée du corps humain, puisque celle-ci est soluble dans l’eau. On doit s’assurer dans prendre régulièrement, Maté C’est un des trois thés les plus répandus dans le monde. Il est principalement cultivé en Amérique du Sud. Le maté est rarement inclus dans les tisanes puisqu’il contient de la caféine. Veuillez donc vous abstenir dans consommer si vous supporter mal la caféine. Le maté contient du fer, du calcium, du potassium ainsi que plusieurs autres vitamines. Comme sa consommation est répandue dans les régions présentant des températures chaudes, on lui attribue des vertus permettant de mieux supporter ce genre de température.

Infuse 2 table spoons of hibiscus or hibiscus based herbal tea in 500 ml of boiling water.

While the water is still close to its boiling point, dissolved 2 table spoons of honey.

Sousa once said, “Jazz music will last as long as people will continue listening to the music with their feet instead of their ears.” Listening to music is not just about sitting politely with your ears bent. Tapping your feet with the music, closing your eyes and imagining the flowing notes... To properly enjoy the music, you have to use all of your five senses. The same as for meals. It is not just your mouth and stomach that matter. Your eyes, ears, hands, and nose are also working to savour the experience. I’d like to introduce you today to Griffintown Café, a perfect place to enjoy the summer when all of our senses are sharpened. This dining café was opened by three
young friends, Clara, Dylan, and Mark. It is one of the most popular places in the old Griffintown, which is now getting busy again under a redevelopment project. The high ceiling and the long wall that continues into the back provide a luxurious space. People who come here to get away from their daily chores rest their eyes, empty their mind and their stomach to be ready for a big meal. The most popular dish is the Griffintown Burger ($14) that carries the name of the café. Their original hamburger made of 50% beef, 25% lamb and 25% duck, topped with smoked cheese, along with lettuce, tomatoes and onion goes inside a bun. The completed burger is bulging so much that you need to open your mouth as wide as possible. A bite into the succulent meat and a dash of sweet juice pours into your mouth. The steaming fries on the side are fluffy inside and you just can’t stop eating… Today I dared to order a cocktail called Southside ($8.50), a perfect choice for a summer afternoon. The cold gin flavoured and coloured with fresh lime and mint was so refreshing. The other popular dishes are brunches such as Eggs Benedict, which comes with home-baked butter milk biscuits that are an inconspicuous yet indispensable desert.

Les plats offerts à l’heure du brunch, comme les œufs à la bénédictine accompagnés de scones au babeurre faits maison qui font un désert inattendu, mais exceptionnel, comptent également parmi les plats les plus populaires. Le Griffintown sert le dîner et le souper les jours de semaine et le brunch les samedis et dimanches. De plus, l’établissement propose un spectacle de jazz tous les jeudis et samedis soirs et des spectacles de blues le vendredi. La meilleure façon de profiter de votre passage au café Griffintown est de laisser vos cinq sens vous guider et de savoir apprécier le lieu, la nourriture et la musique avec ouverture d’esprit. The spirit of Osu in candle light
“Osu!” ”Rei!” “Kamaete!” “Hajime!”
A clear, powerful voice echoed across the large dojo (training hall). The owner of the voice is a Karate expert and instructor Mr. Andre Gilbert, this month’s “Montréal’s Nice Guy.” Mr. Gilbert learned Karate under Masutatsu Oyama, the founder of the Kyokushin Karate. The number of trips he has made to Japan for training and tournaments since 1971 has reached as many as 32! He is also the top of the Québec Kyokushin Karate that has 49 training dojos. He is famous in Montréal for his participation in annual world championships, and for demonstrations that involve him breaking thick ice bricks with his bare hands. He is also an enthusiastic Karate instructor and educator. The number of students that he has taught so far is more than 8,000, and he is particularly passionate about teaching children. At present, 125 children practice at his dojo every week. Requested by La Fondation des Canadiens pour l’Enfance, he often provides classes free of charge. His classes are not only about teaching them Karate techniques, but also, and more importantly, teaching them etiquette and manners, graceful behavior and how to think by themselves. Mr. Gilbert told me that making people happy makes him happy as well. This benevolent Karate teacher finds solace in green tea, which is his energy drink, weekly visits to his favorite sushi restaurant, a little sake after work, and candles on his table. He told me that candles represent happiness to him. “One candle can light up thousands of other candles without shortening its life. Happiness is the same. You can share it with others and it only doubles.” The candle light also carries the spirit of Osu—selfless heart—that he values. He often mentions being Shizentai, literally meaning being natural. I hope his natural smile will continue shining for children.

Une voix claire et puissante résonne à l’intérieur du grand dojo (site d’entrainement). Le propriétaire de cette voix est un instructeur expert du Karaté, M. André Gilbert, la personnalité de Montréal du mois. Gilbert a appris le Karaté sous Masutatsu Oyama, le fondateur du Karaté Kyokushin. Il a effectué pas moins de 32 voyages jusqu’au Japon pour de l’entrainement et pour les tournois depuis 1971! Il est situé au sommet du Karaté Kyokushin du Québec qui compte 49 dojos d’entrainement. Il est fameux à Montréal pour
sa participation annuelle de championnats mondiaux et pour ses démonstrations où il brise des grosses briques de glace avec ses mains nues. Sans dire qu’il est un instructeur et éducateur de Karaté enthousiaste. Le nombre d’étudiants qu’il a enseigne a déjà dépassé 8000 et enseigner aux enfants est ce qui le passionne le plus. Présentement, 125 enfant pratiquent dans son dojo toutes les semaines. Par requête de La Fondation des Canadiens pour l’Enfance, il donne souvent des cours gratuits. Ses cours ne sont pas là pour enseigner des techniques de Karaté seulement, mais surtout pour leur enseigner des bonnes manières, de la bienséance, de l’élégance et de l’indépendance. M. Gilbert m’a dit que donner du bonheur aux autres est une joie pour lui aussi. Cet enseignant bienveillant se réconforte avec du thé vert (sa source d’énergie), des visites hebdomadaires à son restaurant de sushi favori, un peu de saké après le travail et des chandelles sur sa table. Il m’a dit que les chandelles représentent le bonheur pour lui. « Une chandelle peut allumer des milliers d’autres chandelles sans raccourcir sa propre vie. Le bonheur est de tel. On peut en partager avec les autres et il ne fait que doubler. » La chandelle porte aussi l’esprit d’Osu – le cœur altruiste – ce qu’il admire. Il se dit souvent comme étant Shizentai, ce qui veut dire un être naturel. J’espère que son sourire naturel continuera à briller pour les enfants.

恒例の『モントリオール国際ジャズフェスティバル』が開催 中。今年も、1000を超えるコンサートやアクティビティーのうち750 以上が無料で楽しめ、音楽好きには充実の11日間。ただ、 この祭、 もはやジャズの祭典とは呼べないのでは？と気になってしまう。元 レッド・ツェッペリンのロバート・プラントや、 ソウルの女王アレサ・ フランクリンといった大御所の参加は光栄だし、あのプリンスは、 ド タキャンならぬドタインで、深夜のライヴを２回にわたって敢行。 しかも、７月４日の最終日を飾るメイン・コンサート （これも無料） は、B 52sだというから驚く。 どこがジャズなのよ?! と言いつつ、私は プリンスもB 52sも好きなので、実はうれしい。 ロック系の屋外フェスティバルなら、 このテのイベントではカナダ 最大を誇る 『OSHEAGA』。７月29日から31日まで、70組以上のバン ドがジャン・ドラポー公園に集結。屋内でのライヴは、OSHEAGA IN THE CITYと題して、27日から30日まで。 さて、聞くところによれば“Osheaga”とはモントリオールの古い名前 で、 ヨーロッパからの初期の入植者たちが、 ここをそのように呼ん でいたらしい。おなじみジャック・カルティエが、モヒカン族と初め て出会い、握手を求めたのが由来とか。“アメリンディアン”の言葉 で"O she ha ga"は「手を握る人」。言いかえれば、 ここは「人と人と が手をつなぐ場所」。なかなか素敵ではありませんか。 コンサートが無事終了し、 アンコールにも応えた後で、 まだまだ拍 手が鳴りやまぬ中、バンドの全員がステージに並んで手をつなぎ、 その手を振り上げるシーンがよくありますね。あれにもひっかけた ネーミングなのかな、 というのは私の勝手な想像だけれど、そうだ とすれば、達成感と開放感、 アーティストとファンとの一体感が表現 された、ぴったりな言葉のチョイスだと思う。 今年の注目は、モントリオールは９年ぶりのエミネムと、ロック界の 重鎮（？）エルヴィス・コステロ。地元モントリオール出身のブラン・ ヴァン3000や、 トロントのブロークン・ソーシャル・シーンのライヴ も盛り上がりそう。
そういえば、 『OSHEAGA』の会場となる公園では、９月末まで毎週 末、エレクトロニック・ピクニックも行われている。公園＋DJ、 自然＋ テクノといった組み合わせを家族で楽しめるのも、モントリオール らしいスタイルのひとつかも。(© Yoko Seki.2011)

The annual Montreal International Jazz Festival is on now. More than 1000 concerts and activities are scheduled for the event, and 750 of those are free. Although the event offers a fascinating 11 days for music lovers, I'm wondering if it's still appropriate to call it a Jazz Festival. Now, don’t get me wrong. It's great to have big names such as Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin and Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul. Prince even joined the lineup at the last minute (a much nicer surprise than a last-minute cancellation!) to perform two danceable midnight shows. To wrap-up the party, the main concert on July 4 will feature The B-52s on stage! But tell me, where's the “jazz thing” here? Luckily, I like both Prince and The B-52s. So I'm happy no matter what the festival is called. If you like outdoor rock festivals, Osheaga is the biggest festival of its kind in Canada. From July 29 to 31, more than 70 bands will perform in Parc Jean-Drapeau. If you prefer indoor shows, Osheaga in the City is scheduled for July 27 to 30. According to history, Osheaga was an old name for Montreal. It was used by the first European settlers. When Jacques Cartier met the Mohawks, he offered to shake hands. "O she ha ga" means “people who are shaking hands” and the Mohawks would use the phrase to describe the place where they first met the people who offered this gesture. Some historians stretch the phrase to mean a place with people hand in hand. Kind of a nice idea. Often at a great concert, once the set is completed and the encores have been played, the applause still rages on. Then, all the band members come back on stage, hand in hand, and raise their connected hands in the air before taking one final bow. I wonder if the naming of the event had anything to do with that typical scene as well. I know it's only in my imagination, but “Osheaga” just might be the perfect choice of word to represent the feelings of achievement, fulfillment, freedom and togetherness that are all mixed and condensed at an inspiring, energizing concert like this one. This year, Eminem is coming back to Montreal after nine years, and the master of rock and roll and beyond, Mr. Elvis Costello, will also be exerting his strong presence. Bran Van 3000 from Montreal and Broken Social Scene from Toronto are guaranteed to be fun. At the same venue, you can also enjoy the Piknic Electronik every weekend until the end of September. A big park + nature + fantastic DJs + techno music = family friendly fun, which, if you ask me, is classic Montreal style.

Le Festival International de Jazz de Montréal est en pleine marche. Plus de 1000 concerts et activités sont planifiés dont 750 sont gratuites. Même si ce sont 11 jours fascinants pour les fous de la musique, je me demande si c'est toujours correct de l'appeler le Festival de Jazz. C'est fascinant de voir des grandes personnalités célèbres tel que Robert Plant ou Led Zeppeling ou même Aretha Franklin, la Reine du Soul. Prince s'est joint au festival au tout dernier moment, sans annuler a la fin, pour réaliser deux spectacles de danse de minuit. De plus, le concert principal du 4 juillet pour fermer l'événement se fera avec The B-52s sur scène! Alors dis-moi, il est où le Jazz? J'aime Prince et The B-52s, donc je suis contente peu importe le nom qu'on donne au spectacle. Si vous aimez le festival de rock en plein air, OSHEAGA es l'événement le plus grand du Canada. Du 29 au 30 juillet, plus de 70 groupes vont chanter sur le site du Parc JeanDrapeau. Pour les événements à l'intérieur, OSHEAGA IN THE CITY aura lieu du 27 au 30 juillet. Selon l'histoire, Osheaga était un nom antérieur de Montréal. Il a été utilisé par les premiers colons venus d'Europe. Quand Jacques Cartier s'est rencontré avec les Mohawks, il voulait leur donner la main. « O she ha ga » veut dire se donner la main et les Mohaws ont utilisé cette phrase pour décrire le lieu où ils ont rencontrer les gens qui donnaient la main. Quelques uns disaient que c'était un lieu où les gens se promenaient main à main. Ça fait un peu beau. Il arrive assez souvent d'entendre des applaudissements qui continuent lorsque l'on joue un bis plus d'une fois. Par après, les membres du groupe retournent sur scène, main à main, et lèvent leurs mains jointes dans l'air. Je suppose que l'événement a pris son nom dû à cette scène typique d'un concert aussi. Je sais que ce n'est que mon imagination, mais ça pourrait être un choix de mot idéal pour représenter le sentiment de réussite, réalisation, liberté et de camaraderie, tout combiné en un. Cette année, Eminem vient de retour à Montréal après 9 ans et le maître du Rock'n Roll et bien encore, M. Elvis Costello, va exercer sa forte présence. Bran Van 3000 de Montréal et Broken Social Scene de Toronto devraient être divertissants. Au même lieu, on pourra jouir avec grande chance le Piknic Electronik toutes les fins de semaine jusqu'à la fin de septembre. Un parc énorme + DJ ou bien encore la grande nature + le techno = du divertissement agréable pour toute la famille de style Montréalais.

Fascinated by Prince Edward Island This summer, a Japanese couple will open a B&B in Charlottetown. PEI is very popular in Japan since it was the setting of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novel, “Anne of Green Gables” (or Red-Haired Anne” in Japanese.) Every year, endless groups of people from, not only Japan, but all over the world and Canada visit this small, beautiful island. Of those who visit, some decide to immigrate because they are fascinated by this island. Among them is a Japanese couple, Kiyoshi Aoyama and Atsuko Aoyama, who are opening a Bed and Breakfast on July 1st, 2011. Both of them are 59 years old, and are from Ibaraki Prefecture. They were looking for what they have deemed a “second life” in PEI.

── We visited PEI in 2006 for the first time. Since the island is well known in Japan because of “Red-Haired Anne,” we thought that there might be a B&B run by a Japanese manager. But, we were surprised when we found there wasn’t one. We then thought: “We could do this.” So that was the beginning.

Have you ever run a B&B business? ── After graduating from university, both of us worked for different local governments. And both of us continued to work after we married. However, it’s been around 10 years that we started to feel we wanted to try a new kind of life. In 2006, our only son got married, which triggered our early retirement in 2007. And in November 2007, we came to Canada. In short, no, we don’t have any experience running a business. What are your future plans for your business? ── Japanese people like PEI very much, so I want more people from Japan to visit here. I would like to offer an affordable place to stay, where people don’t have to use English, or feel tense due to language barriers. I also hope our business can help support the economy of the PEI people who have accepted us as a part of their community.
Cet été un couple japonais ouvrira un Bed & Breakfast à Charlottetown. L'Île-du-Prince-Édouard est une destination très prisée par les Japonais, car c'est là où Lucy Maud Montgomery a situé l'histoire de son célèbre roman « Anne, la Maison aux Pignons Verts » (ou « Anne au cheveux roux » en japonais). Chaque année, plusieurs groupes de voyageurs, non seulement des Japonais mais aussi des Canadiens et des gens de partout, visitent cette petite et merveilleuse île. Parfois, certains décident même d'y immigrer tellement ils sont fascinés par cet endroit. C'est ce qu'a fait un couple de Japonais, Kiyoshi et Atsuko Aoyama, qui ont décidé d'ouvrir un Bed & Breakfast le 1er juillet 2011. Originaire de la préfecture d'Ibaraki, le couple de 59 ans voit cette occasion comme le début d'une deuxième vie à l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard. Les gens ne peuvent s'empêcher de penser: « Wow! C'est île est si romantique. J'aimerais vivre dans un tel endroit ». Cependant la réalité peut s'avérer bien différente. Comment Monsieur et Madame Aoyama ont-ils réussi à réaliser leur rêve à l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard? Comment cela s'est réalisé? Je les ai donc interviewés. Pourquoi avez-vous décidé d'ouvrir un B&B? « Nous avons visité l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard pour la première fois en 2006. Puisque c'est une destination très populaire auprès des Japonais surtout à cause d'Anne la Maison aux Pignons Verts, nous pensions trouver un B&B opéré par un Japonais. Cependant, nous avons été grandement surpris de constater qu'il n'y en avait aucun. Puis nous nous sommes dit: « Nous pourrions en ouvrir un. ». C'est comme cela que notre projet à commencé. » Avez-vous déjà opéré un B&B? « Après avoir terminé l'université et après notre mariage, nous avons travaillé tous les deux au sein de gouvernements régionaux. Par contre, cela fait une dizaine d'années que nous contemplons la possibilité d'essayer un nouveau mode de vie. En 2006, notre fils unique s'est marié et nous nous sommes retrouvés en retraite anticipée. Puis, nous sommes venus au Canada en novembre 2007 sans aucune expérience dans le domaine de l'hôtellerie. »
