毎年１月２日と３日、日本中の人々が注目する場所、それが箱根だ。 お正月の風物詩「箱根駅伝」が行われるからだ。駅伝とは、長距離の コースを数人のランナーが”たすき”を渡しながらリレーするレース で、 日本では老若男女を問わず人気のスポーツだ。箱根駅伝は、関東 地方の大学生によるレースで、東京から箱根で折り返してまた戻って 来る約100キロの道のりを10人のランナーで競う。１日目は東京から 箱根までの往路、２日目は箱根から東京までの復路で、１日目のタイ ムにより時間差でスタート。２日間にかけて10時間以上にも及ぶ過 酷なレースに、 日本中が沸き返って応援するのだ。

箱根は、東京新宿駅から特急列車（ロマンスカー）で約70分という便 利さ、富士山の眺望、箱根関などの歴史的名所、良質の温泉などがあ り、観光地、保養地として人気が高い。箱根登山鉄道やケーブルカー、 ロープウェイなどを利用して箱根峠を満喫した後、芦ノ湖でのんびり クルージングというのが人気のコースだ。

奈良時代（８世紀頃）に発見されたという歴史の古い温泉で、戦国武 将や大名が旅や戦の疲れを癒すために逗留したという逸話が数多く 残されている。富士山を眺めながらの露天風呂は、最高だ。

江戸時代、江戸への入国は厳しく制限されており、旅人はすべて関所 で手形を見せなければ通過できなかった。箱根関は、江戸から京都 へ向かう東海道に設けられた関所で、その厳しい審査は有名だった。 明治時代に廃止され、跡地に資料館が建てられていたが、2007年に 関所の建物が復元され、新たな観光スポットとなっている。

Every year on the second and third of January, every Japanese pays attention to one location in particular : Hakone. “Hakone Stagecoach” is a mainstay of the new year season because events always take place there. The Stagecoach is the long distance course where many runners go through an intensive relay race in which they have to pass a “cord” to the next runner of their team. This event invites men and women of all ages to join, which makes it a very popular sport event. Each university in the Kanto area gathers 10 university students to participate in the race. The travel from Tokyo to Hakone Stagecoach and back is approximately 100 kilometers long. On the first day, the outward journey from Tokyo to Hakone Stagecoach is completed. The second day is the return trip from Hakone Stagecoach to Tokyo. The travel time for the completion of the whole race of each relay teams is recorded. For those two days, all of Japan vigorously encourages these athletes.

犬と猫と人間と （www.inunekoningen.com） これは先日観た映画のタイトル。 「ペット大国」 日本の現状を描いたドキュメンタリー。犬のお誕生日会や 洋服屋さん、ペット用のお菓子屋さんにレンタルペット。CMで人気が出た犬種は値段がつり上がる。そん な反対側で殺処分になる犬や猫が35万頭以上(2006年)にもなる日本の現状が淡々と描かれていた。 私の印象から日本は「生体販売」が未だに主流。 ブリーダーから買うとか保護施設からもらうという選択が 多くないように思える。 日本の場合、市などの管轄の動物管理センターに連れて行くということはかなりの 確率で殺処分になってしまう。保護期間はたったの5日間。6日目にはガスによって中毒死させられる。 「子 供に手がかかるから」 「引っ越すから」 「子犬子猫がたくさん生まれたから」 と手放す理由は色々。 「仕方な い」のだろうか。違う飼い主を探してあげるならまだしも管理センターに連れて行くのは「殺して下さい」 と 言っているようなもの。冷たく暗い檻の中でおびえながら、迎えに来てくれるかもしれないと待っている犬 たちの姿をそういう人達には想像できないのだろうか。日本で保護活動をしているオーストリア人が「日 本の犬には生れたくないな」 と言っていた。 私は映画を見て「人間でごめんね」 と言いたくなった。多くの人の目にとまったらいいなと思う映画だっ た。
Dogs, cats, & humans （www.inunekoningen.com） This is a title of a movie I watched last week. The movie is a documentary about pets in Japan. It featured birthday parties for dogs, dress shops for dogs, bakeries for dogs and pet rentals. Dogs where made popular through TV commercials, thus the price of the species is very high. Nevertheless, many dogs and cats are purchased, the number in 2006 being 350,000 ! The movie illustrates the situation of pets in Japan. Generally, owners purchased their pets in a pet shop, the animals being put in a small area for showcase, some shops are even open 24 hours, like a convenience store. Of course some people order their pets through breeders or try to purchase them at shelters; Unfortunately, it is not the majority. In Japan, taking pets to animal centers (shelters,) means they will be killed. They are killed by gas after 5 days when they are brouht in. The reasons given are too ‘busy raising a child’ ‘moving’ ‘too many puppies and kitties are born’. My opinion is that owners should find new owners when they cannot take care of their pets. Taking pets to animal centers, is like saying ‘please kill my pet.’ Can you imagine? A lot of dogs and cats are waiting for their owners, frightened in a dark, cold cage. They don’t know that their owner will never come... never. One Austrian said in the movie: “I don’t want to be a dog in Japan.” I wanted to say “I apologize ‘cause I am human.” I hope many people watch this movie.

Ce dernier présentait des anniversaires pour chiens, boutiques pour chiens, patisseries pour chiens, et des objets à louer pour animaux. Les annonces publicitaires à la TV ont rendus les chiens célèbres, ainsi ils sont très couteux. Toutefois, les chiens et chats sont achetés en grand nombre, 350 00 d'entres eux furent achetés en 2006! Le film dépaint la situation des animaux de compagnie au Japon. D'habitude, les propriétaires les achètent dans des “pet shop”, les animaux sont présentés dans un espace étroit, certains magasins sont même ouverts 24 heures sur 24, comme un dépanneur. Naturellement certains propriétaires achètent leurs animaux chez des éleveurs ou dans des refuges pour animaux; Malhereusement, ce n'est pas la majorité. Au Japon, amener un animal dans un refuge équivaut à le tuer. Plusieurs raisons sont données ‘J'élève mon enfant’ ‘je déménage’ ‘trop de chiots out chattons naissent’. Vous en rendez-vous compte? Dans cette galette est dissimulée une fève. Nul ne sait où elle se trouve. Celui qui mange la part contenant la fève est déclaré roi. On pose alors une couronne sur la tête du roi qui doit alors choisir sa reine (ou le contraire). Bien entendu, l’Épiphanie est surtout fêtée dans les familles et fait le bonheur des enfants. Aujourd’hui, la Fête des Rois a perdu sa popularité, particulièrement dans les grandes villes où les familles sont moins nombreuses. Cependant, rien ne nous empêche de la célébrer entre amis, et ce, pour le plaisir de couronner un Roi ou une Reine de la journée ! Et n’oubliez pas, le nouveau Roi doit payer la tournée à ses amis... 今年は感謝の気持ちから 年が明けましたね！みなさん、今年の目標は 立てましたか？ 昨年は、カナダと日本の文化の違いとその 間に挟まって育ってきたジャパーニーズ・カ ナディアンとしての経験談を幾つか述べて きました。今年はちょっとテーマを変え、様 々な違いの中にでも同じ人間としての共通 点や常識などがあることを述べていこうか なと思っています。

今年はまず感謝の気持ちについて語りたい と思います。 日本人であっても、カナダ人、ケ ベコワ、そしてどんな国の人であっても共通 することと言えば感謝の気持ちを持つこと ですね。 これなしではどの国でも受け入れ てもらえないし、分かり合えない、信じてもら えないと思います。 感謝の気持ちがあってこそ、心は通じ合うも のだと感じています。言葉が話せなくても、 愛から生まれてくる感謝の気持ちを笑顔、 ジ ェスチャー、あるいは行動で示すだけで相 手のリアクションが変わってくると感じまし た。そしてそこから今度は友情、愛情、信頼、 親しみというものが生まれ、育っていくんだ なと思いました。 実は簡単なことで、中にはこれを難しいと思 ってしまう人もいます。まずは、自分をさら けだす覚悟で向かっていくのが大切だと思 います。 自分の周りに余計な壁を作って自分 の事ばかり考えていませんか？人からの優 しさを忘れてしまっていませんか？

It has been five years since they started creating jewelry. Initially they were not serious and thought of it as a hobby, however the more they did it, the more they were attracted by its charm. They soon immersed themselves in jewelry making. Immediately the brilliance of their work captivated many women and they soon became very popular, very quickly. They first showed their creations in the craft sale at the Japan Canada Cultural Centre and now are regular participants. At the end of last year, many women came to buy BijouX2 jewelry.

I wonder, “How can they can add so much love?” However, according to them, they fill their mind with“Nothing” while making the jewelry, which surprised me and helped me to open my eyes. NICO’s most favorite necklace is the one with a big crystal heart besides pink and black roses, and fine beads and chains are twined all around. When I look into the crystal heart, well, I can see that God of accessory is there too. 2 0 0 6 年に、モントリオール 交 響 楽 団 （OSM）の音楽監督に就任したケント・ ナガノ氏。 オペラとコンサートの双 方で活 躍し、 明快で優雅、そして知的な指揮者とし て世界的に名高い。常に新鮮な企画で 音楽ファンを楽しませてくれるナガノ氏 が、2010年、本拠地モントリオールにて 『Les Mystères du Japon』 の演奏会 を行う。 リハーサルの合間、短い休憩時 間を割いて、独占インタビューに答えてく れた。 （＊インタビューはフランス語で行 われた。）
-『Les Mystères du Japon』の演奏 会を行う目的はなんですか？ 東洋と西洋のとても複雑な関係を探究するこ とにあります。日本では、 ヨーロッパや北米に おける詩や文学や音楽等を、異文化として魅 力を感じ興味を抱いています。それに相反す るように、歴史的な観点となると、ペリー提督 が日本に開国を迫って以来、両国の関係は幾 度となく緊張した状況を生み出してきました。 私たちは、 この“不思議”な関係を探究したか ったのです。今回のコンサートを“ミステリー” と呼ぶのはそのためです。 今 回 の 演 奏 曲 目 に なっている「 M a d a m a Butterfly」は、西洋人が感じた日本に対する概 念を知るうえで、 まさに代表的な曲だと言える でしょう。Puccini氏は、日本に行ったことがあ りませんでした。彼は、 この作品のメロディや 蝶々夫人という人物を通して、彼自身の日本観 を表現したのです。

界大戦では、日本はカナダの敵国となったた めに、彼らは収容所に拘束されてしまいまし た。それはアメリカでも同じで、日系二世であ る私の両親も収容所で育ちました。日本に祖 先を持つカナダ人のもうひとつの歴史、それ をHarman氏は交響詩によって表現したかっ たのです。 これは私自身にとっても、 とても興 味深いことです。

thread among the Gold by a Québec-based Canadian composer Chris Paul Harman. in public. The theme of this song is the perspectives of Japanese Canadians, whose ancestor came to Canada looking for a new life. In the 20th century, thousands of Japanese people immigrated to Canada, but they had to be held in internment camps during the Second World War as the citizens of the enemy. It was the same in the U.S., and actually my parents grew up in one of the camps as second-generation Japanese Americans. Mr. Harman wanted to reveal this side of the history of Japanese Canadians through a symphony, which I found very interesting. The third song is called Onna-no-ko no uta (A song for girls), which was made by a French composer Jean-Pascal Beintus by using traditional Japanese nursery rhymes passed down from the 19th century and arranging them into a symphony.

- To you, what is Japan? I understand that you are a third-generation Japanese? Yes, I’m a third-generation Japanese, but my situation is a little different from others. I never had Japanese family in the U.S. My

grandparents were already very old, and my parents, uncles, aunts, cousins…they were all Americans. The real Japanese experience in my life was from my wife and her family, and they are the reason why the country became so important to me. But, my first visit to Japan made a great impression on me. When I was 33 or 34, I was working with Seiji Ozawa as his assistant conductor, and he invited me to Japan. Before that, I was learning music mainly in the U.S. and Europe, and had no attachment to Japan at all. But, can you imagine how surprised I was? Going to Japan let me understand what had been puzzling me for years. For example, the rhythm of my speech.

- It’s very important that you are successful overseas as a Japanese American. Yes, it is. It’s true that I have the same ancestors as Japanese people, and it does not break off even when you immigrate to another country. That’s why I’m attracted to Montréal and Québec. Here, people are still living in the cultures of their ancestors. The United States is called a “melting pot”. Cultures of different ethnic groups are mixed and turned into one new culture. I heard that Québec is called a “mosaic” of races. Each and every culture of immigrants makes an individual piece of the puzzle and together they make one beautiful picture. It’s wonderful.
- I feel proud as a Japanese that you are conducting for OSM. Oh, that’s very interesting! (laugh) I actually feel very humbled when I go to Japan. I feel very small in front of the culture with thousands of years of history. It humbles me to think how young I am and America is.
- Would you like to say a word to the Japanese communities in Montréal? Please come to our concert. I’d love to share the theme with everyone. Various composers have created songs about the beauty of Japan. Let’s celebrate our multicultural heritage together.

- Quel est l’objectif du concert « Mystères du Japon »? Je voulais explorer la relation complexe qui lie l’Orient et l’Occident. Au Japon, la poésie, la littérature et la musique européennes et nord-américaines font naître un intérêt qui découle de l’exotisme qu’elles revêtent. À l’opposé, du point de vue historique, la relation entre le Japon et l’Occident a connu des tensions à plus d’une reprise depuis que le commodore Perry a forcé le Japon à s’ouvrir. Nous voulions donc explorer cette relation « mystérieuse ». C’est pour cette raison que ce concert porte le nom de « Mystères ». On peut certainement dire que « Madame Butterfly », une des oeuvres du concert, est un bon exemple de composition qui permet de connaître la manière dont l’Occident s’est représenté le Japon. Puccini ne s’était jamais rendu dans ce pays. Le personnage de Madame Butterfly et les mélodies qu’il a

Love speaks no languages. No matter if you’re in Canada or Japan, January seems to always bring on those post-holiday blues. Christmas gifts have been exchanged, ornaments have been packed away, and the new year has been brought in with a kiss. What’s there to look forward to other than bleak winter days and impossible-to-keep New Year’s resolutions? Well, Hiro’s birthday, for one. After Hiro’s romantic surprise at Christmas, I found myself faced with quite the birthday challenge. How was I supposed to match a gift so perfectly thoughtful and sweet? Less than a month later, I found myself playing with the sparkly ring on my left hand as I contemplated what to get him for his midmonth birthday. I noted which finger it was on as I recalled the anxiety and excitement I had experienced at the prospect of a proposal. Lucky for me, Hiro saved us both from a very awkward situation by responding to my not-sosubtle question with a vagueness only a Japanese guy could get away with: “Whichever finger you’d like to wear it on,” he said, his eyes not giving away whether or not he knew what I’d been hinting at. Had Hiro not understood what I had been insinuating or was he simply playing it cool? As I pondered the language barrier that

The Thai-style fried noodles are called “Pad Thai.” “Pad” means to cook in Thai. The noodles that are used are rice noodles. Although we usually think of Thai food being very spicy, Pad Thai isn’t that spicy at all. Actually, Pad Thai is a little bit sweet. In fact, it’s even a little bit refreshing becomes it always comes with a lemon, and is accented with plump shrimp and crunchy peanuts.
Also, be sure to try the food that has a lovely and cute name that means “nest of chickens and shrimp.” The crispy noodles are shaped like a bird’s nest and are studded with chicken, shrimp and vegetables. It is colorful and nutritious. Although I felt kind of bad destroying a nest of love, I was too hungry to stop eating it.

So it’s something that you don’t like, that annoys you, that you complain about, like, “oh, I hate this,” or “this really bothers me.” It’s only little things.
