広島県民の意外な一面
モントリオールは1７世紀の1642年から街作り が始まりましたが、広島もほぼ同時期、前後して 街作りが始まっています。すなわち約400年前の 1589年、戦国武将の毛利元就（もうりもとなり）の 孫・毛利輝元（てるもと）が、広島城を築城したと きから始まります。
ある反面、沈着な行動に欠け、持久力に乏しい」 という傾向も見られます。 「熱しやすく、冷めやす い」県民気質の例えとしてあげられるのは広島東 洋カープの応援ぶりです。チームが勝ち続けてい る時は熱狂的に声援を送るが、負けこむと球場 に足を運ばないということなどが顕著な例です。
昨年2009年は近代的な新球場のマツダスタジ アムが完成してから、チームは5位と下降線をた 広島城は別名鯉城（りじょう） とも言われ、 プロ野 どりながらも、昨年１年間の観客動員は新球場 球の地元球団「広島東洋カープ」も鯉城にちなみ 効果の影響かカープ球団史上新記録の187万人 「カープ」と命名されました。オリジナルの広島 を記録しました。今年はカープ往年の名選手、野 城は1945年8月6日の原爆投下により消失しまし 村謙二新監督を迎えリーグ戦を戦っていますが、 たが、1958年（昭和33年）に「広島復興大博覧会」 主力選手に故障者が続出でチームの成績も低迷 が開催された際、鉄骨鉄筋コンクリート造りの現 しマツダスタジアムも空席が目立ちます。それで 在の姿に復元され、今は郷土歴史資料館となっ も、広島の街はカープが勝った翌日は元気で、負 ています。 けた翌日はなんとなく暗い雰囲気が漂います。 と もかく 「カープ」には是非とも頑張って欲しいもの 広島県人は瀬戸内の温暖な気候風土の影響で です。 穏やかな気性と言われる反面、行動優先の熱血 漢タイプ、すなわち進取な気風があるとも言われ どこの街も歴史的、文化的な背景とともにそれぞ ています。それだけにハワイやカリフォルニアそ れの特色や個性があります。万国博やオリンッピ してブラジルに多くの移民を排出し、かつてハワ ックのホストなどを経てコスモポリタンな街にな イやカリフォルニアの日本語は「広島弁」が標準 ったモントリオールを姉妹都市に持つ広島はそ 語だったとの逸話もあります。 の長所を学び、将来の素晴らしい街作りに反映し て欲しいものです。 また、広島人の気風は何事にも熱しやすく冷め やすいとよく言われます。つまり 「進取な気風が

The city of Montreal was founded in 1642, and Hiroshima was founded around the same time. About 400 years ago, it all began when Mouri Terumoto, grandson of warlord Mouri Motonari, built Hiroshima Castle in 1589.
La ville de Montréal a été fondée en 1642, et Hiroshima a été fondé dans cette période également. Il y a environ 400 ans, tout a commencé quand Mouri Terumoto, fils du seigneur de guerre Mouri Motonari, a construit le château d’Hiroshima en 1589.
Hiroshima Castle is also called “Rijou” (Carp Castle.) Hiroshima’s professional baseball team, Hiroshima Toyo Carp, was named after the castle. The original Hiroshima Castle was destroyed by the atomic bomb on August 6th, 1945 during World War II. In 1958, The Big Exhibition of Hiroshima Reconstruction was held, and the castle was rebuilt with steel-reinforced concrete. It has since become a local history museum. People in Hiroshima are said to have a calm nature, which is influenced by the warm climate of the Seto Island Sea. However, they are considered to be action-oriented, hotblooded, and progressive as well. It is due to these qualities that many Hiroshima locals immigrated to Hawaii, California, and Brazil. It has even been said that the common Japanese in Hawaii and California is spoken with a Hiroshima dialect. People from Hiroshima are also known as being easily excitable, but then quick to cool off. In other words, they are a progressive people, and yet they lack self-composure and have poor endurance. A common Hiroshima expression, loosely translated as “easily heat up, easily cool down” nicely sums up the nature of those born in Hiroshima. This becomes easy to understand when watching how they support their local baseball team, Hiroshima Toyo Carp. They will cheer enthusiastically when they are winning; but once they start losing, people won’t even bother going to the baseball stadium to watch the game! Last year, a modern Mazda stadium was built for the local Hiroshima team. Although the team ended up the 2nd worst place the season, the number of people in attendance hit 1,870,000 and broke previous records--maybe it was only because they were excited to have a brandnew stadium. This year the team welcomed a former wellknown player, Nomura Kenji, as coach. However, at this point in the season, many of the key players have been injured--reflected in their recent performance--and now there are many empty seats at Mazda Stadium. Still, the city of Hiroshima becomes animated after a winning night, and the atmosphere turns gloomy after a losing game. I still hope Carp does well this season. Each city has its own character with a unique historic and cultural background. Montreal became a cosmopolitan city after hosting the Montreal Expo and the Olympic games. As Montreal’s sister city, hopefully Hiroshima learns from its strength and takes from its knowledge for an even better future in Hiroshima.
Le château d’Hiroshima s’appelle également le « Rijou» (Château de carpe). L’équipe de baseball professionnelle locale, les Hiroshima Toyo Carp, a été baptisée du nom du château. Le château original d’Hiroshima a été détruit par la bombe atomique le 6 août 1945 lors de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. En 1958, avec la grande exposition de la reconstruction d’Hiroshima, le château a été reconstitué avec du béton en acier renforcé. Il est depuis devenu un musée d’histoire locale. On dit que les habitants d’Hiroshima sont de nature calme, qui est influencée par le climat chaud de la mer intérieure de Seto. Cependant, ils sont également considérés proactifs, passionnés, et progressifs. Forts de ces qualités, beaucoup de gens d’Hiroshima ont immigré en Hawaï, en Californie et au Brésil. On rapporte même que le japonais parlé à Hawaï et en Californie est très proche du dialecte d’Hiroshima. Les gens d’Hiroshima sont également connus de s’exciter rapidement, mais tout en reprenant aussitôt leur esprit. En d’autres termes, c’est un peuple libéral, mais qui manque de sang-froid et intolérant. Une expression commune d’Hiroshima, lâchement traduite comme « réchauffent facilement, se refroidissent facilement » résume bien la nature des natifs d’Hiroshima. On comprend mieux quand on les observe lorsqu’ils soutiennent leur équipe de baseball. Ils les encouragent avec enthousiasme quand ils gagnent ; mais s’ils commencent à perdre, les gens ne prendront plus la peine d’aller les voir au stade! L’année dernière, un stade moderne de Mazda a été construit pour l’équipe locale d’Hiroshima. Malgré que l’équipe n’ait pu bien performé durant le saison, l’assistance aux parties a atteint 1,870,000 personnes, ce qui est meilleur que les précédents records – probablement parce qu’ils étaient excités d’avoir un stade tout neuf. Cette année, l’équipe a souhaité la bienvenue à un ancien joueur bien connu, Nomura Kenji, comme entraîneur. Cependant, en ce moment dans la saison, plusieurs des joueurs clés sont blessés, et maintenant il y a beaucoup de sièges vides au stade Mazda. À coup sûr, la ville d’Hiroshima devient enflammée après une victoire, et l’atmosphère tourne au noir après une défaite. J’espère toujours que les Carpe performeront bien cette saison. Chaque ville a son propre caractère avec un fond historique et culturel unique. Montréal est devenu une ville cosmopolite après avoir accueilli l’Expo de Montréal et les Jeux Olympiques. Tout comme sa ville soeur Montréal, peut-être qu’Hiroshima apprendra de ses forces et puisera dans son expertise pour créer un futur encore meilleur.

Lepage氏が オーナーのお一人でもあることで有名なお店でもあります。そん なモントリオールを代表するレストランでデザート作りを任されて いる女性、 と聞いたら、 どんな貫禄の女性が出てくるのかと思いき や。ふわふわのマシュマロを彷彿させる甘やかな笑顔を湛え、恥 ずかしそうに登場してくれたのが、清香さんだったのです。控え目 に語り始める清香さんの初々しい表情は、可憐な少女そのもの。 それでもひとたびデザートの説明となれば、真剣な眼差しとまっ すぐな心が、 自ら作り上げたばかりのデザートに向けられます。可 愛いばかりのお嬢さんではない、 「デザートの職人」 という品格と 誇りが、清香さんの姿勢を凛と見せてくれるのです。 日本で既に調理師免許を取得していた清香さんは、 ワーキングホ リデーで訪れたモントリオールをすっかり気に入り、再び戻ってき ました。有名レストランでの経験を積み、満を持して 「Accords」の パティシエとしてデビューしたのです。 フランス語の「delicieux(euse)」は、 「美味の」だけでなく 「素敵な、 優しくて気立てのよい」 というほめ言葉にも使われます。清香さん は、 まさにdelicieuseなお人柄でありながら、delicieuxなデザート を次々に作り上げていく、 「美味」のお姫様。美味王国のお姫様の、 美味しいデザートの数々。皆様もぜひ旧市街を訪れて、砂糖と美味 で一杯の清香ワールドを堪能してみてくださいませ！ああ、Alfred Döblinにも食べさせてあげたかった…。

The person who said “World is made of sugar and dust” is Alfred Döblin. If it’s true, I would rather like to get drunk on the sweetness of sugar than dust. It is not because of that, but Nico’s sense of smell starts working alertly when she hears about sweet and tasty food. This month’s Nice Girl in Montreal, caught such Nico’s sense of smell, is Sayaka Ohmori-san, a pastry cook, whose smile gives you an impression of the sweetness of heart. Sayaka-san works at a wine bar called ”Accords” in the old city. This is a restaurant recommended by Nico, where you can enjoy tasty wine and accompanied dishes in the space separated from the city noise. It is famous for its owner, Mr. Guy A. Lepage, who is known as a comedian and a producer. So, I imagined her with a lot of presence as told that she was in charge of making desserts at the restaurant representing Montreal. However, Sayaka-san in a shy look showed up with a sweet smiling face, reminding me soft marshmallow. She then started talking moderately – her fresh expression was nothing but an innocent girl’s. However, at once the topics moved into desserts, her serious look and straight mind turned to the dessert that she had just made. It is not her princess cuteness, but her dignity and pride as a “dessert artisan” that shows her attitude fully. Sayaka-san obtained a certificate for a licensed cook in Japan and visited Montreal with a working holiday visa. Since she fell in love with Montreal, she returned. Having experienced at famous restaurants, she waited until the time was ripened. She then made her debut as a pastry cook at “Accords.” “Delicieus(euse)” in French is used not only for “tasty,” but also for praising such as “lovely, gentle and tender-hearted.” While Sayaka-san has a truly goodhearted personality, she is a princess of delicious desserts maker. There are many delicious desserts that the princess of delicious county makes. Why don’t you visit the old city to enjoy the Sayaka World that is full of sugar and deliciousness!? Oh, I wish Alfred Döblin could have tasted it...
Albert Döblin disait que « le monde est fait de sucre et de poussière ». Si cela est vrai, je préfèrerais m’enivrer avec la douceur du sucre qu’avec de la poussière. Mon odorat s’active rapidement lorsque je soupçonne la présence de sucreries et de délicieuse nourriture. C’est ma gourmandise qui m’a menée jusqu’à notre « nice girl » de ce moisci: Sayaka Ohmori-san, une chef patissière dont le sourire témoigne de sa douceur. Sayaka-san travaille au restaurant “Accords” du Vieux-Montréal. D’ailleurs, je vous recommande chaudement cet établissement puisque c’est un endroit où l’on peut déguster de bon vins accompagnés de plats de qualité dans un oasis éloigné du bourdonnement de la ville. Ce resto est d’ailleurs célèbre en raison de son propriétaire, Guy A. Lepage, un comédien et producteur très respecté. Lorsqu’on m’a informé que Sayaka-san était la responsable des desserts de ce restaurant, je l’imaginais avec beaucoup de prestance. Cependant, elle s’est présentée à moi avec un sourire d’une grande douceur et me parla avec modestie. Malgré cela, j’ai vite compris que l’impression de candeur qu’elle dégageait n’était que le fruit de son apparence de jeune fille. En effet, une fois la conversation tournée vers les desserts, c’est avec un sérieux visible et un esprit vif qu’elle discuta de ses créations. Ce n’est donc pas seulement son apparence candide qui m’a marquée, mais aussi sa dignité et sa fierté d’être une artisane patissière. Sayaka-san a obtenu un certificat comme cuisinière au Japon et visita pour la première fois Montréal avec un visa vacance-travail. Elle tomba alors amoureuse de la ville et décida d’y revenir. Après avoir acquis de l’expérience dans plusieurs restaurants populaires, elle saisit sa chance et fit ses débuts comme chef patissière chez Accords. Délicieux en français ne veut pas seulement dire « savoureux », mais peut aussi prendre un sens plus large, comme « adorable, doux et tendre ». Sayakasan a un personnalité véritablement chaleureuse, et c’est aussi la princesse des patissières. Pourquoi n’allez-vous pas visiter le Vieux Montréal et le monde de Sayaka, un monde qui déborde de sucre et de petits délices. Hmm, j’aurais souhaité qu’Alfred Döblin puisse avoir la chance de goûter une de ses créations!

皆さんには、子供の頃から抱いているトラウマってありますか？そのトラウマ が小さくても大きくても、心に残ったままで必死に消そうとしたり忘れようと したりしていませんか？いつの間にかそれが自分の大切な個性、性格、そし て力の邪魔をしていませんか？私には、密かに抱いてるトラウマがあります。 皆さんからしたら小さなトラウマかも知れません。でも自分にとってはチク チクと心を突き刺すような痛みを感じさせるようなトラウマなのです。 それは、5年生の頃に起きた出来事でした。 クリスマスが近づく頃、先生の 指導でクラスのみんなでクリスマスソングを唄う練習をしていた時の事 です。 「On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me～♪」 とク リスマスには良く唄われているソングを唄い始めました。私は「5th day of Christmas」の部分を唄うのを任されました。私の番がきて思い切って唄っ たのですが、唄い終えた後にクラス中のみんながクスクスと笑い始めたの です。始めは「そうか、楽しいんだな」 と一緒にクスクスしていたのですが、私 の出番がやってくるたびに笑っていたのです。先生は誰にも注意などせずそ のまま何回も唄わされ、終いには誰かが「おい、お前の発音ひどいぞ～！」 っ て言いました。 クリスマスのショーが訪れ、舞台の上で唄った時はどこかへ 逃げたい気持ちで一杯でした。 それ以来人前で唄うのは避けていました。 こんなにもトラウマになってしま ったのは、小さい頃から歌手になる夢があったからでしょう。上手く発音も唄 うことも出来ないことの恥ずかしさを知った以上、歌手になることは諦めて いたのですが、夢って言うものはそんなにすぐには諦められないものなん ですね。密かに自分の部屋で毛布の中にテープレコーダーと共に隠れ、小 声で唄っていました。 自分が一人でいるときはずっと唄っていました。 ステー ジの上で唄うことを妄想しながら・・・。 ２０代後半になった頃、目覚めたのです！単純に物事を考えるようになりま した。 「これから先、生きていく中、二人の自分の中で、 どちらの自分を選ぶか によって人生が変わる」 と。一人は「これから一生トラウマに操られて行きて いく自分」、そしてもう一人は「トラウマと向かい合い戦っていく自分」。 どちら も恐ろしさを味わう人生でしょう。 しかし、被害者にはなりたくありませんで した。戦おうと決め、自分らしく自分にあった自分の出来る限りの戦いに挑 むことに決めたのです。 以来５年ちょっとですが、ネットのある日本の音楽サイトで知り合った日本 のギタリストの方と一緒にバンドを組むようになり、今はそのネットバンド を通じて唄っています。 コンテストに参加して１位を獲得したり、着ウタとし て選ばれたりととても順調です。３４歳になった今も、そのトラウマで恥ず かしさに襲われながらも、 コツコツと戦っています。そしてそんなヒーローな 自分を選んでよかったって思っています！ （しかし、 ステージの上で人前で唄 うことはまだ無理かな？・・・できるよう戦い続けます！） トラウマに感謝です。 自分を見つけ出し、大切なものにまた触れるチャンスをもらったと思ってい ます。
Have you ever had a traumatizing experience as a child? Whether that traumatizing event is big or small, it stays with you deep in your heart and you try so hard to erase it or forget about it? When you least expect it, it has been in the way of your character, personality and strength? I have, myself, experienced a traumatizing event in my childhood. It may seem very small to some, however, to me it feels as though it stabs me in my heart.
Avez-vous déjà eu une expérience traumatisante durant votre enfance ? Cette expérience traumatisante, soit grande ou petite, reste avec vous dans les profondeurs de votre coeur même si vous essayez de l’effacer ou de l’oublier? Et quand vous ne l’attendez pas, celle-ci influence votre caractère, votre personnalité et vos forces? J’ai, moi-même, éprouvé un événement traumatisant dans mon enfance. Il peut sembler très mineur pour certains, cependant, pour moi il se sent comme s’il me poignarde mon coeur.
It happened when I was in grade 5. Christmas was just around the corner; my classmates and I were all practicing a Christmas song with the guidance of our teacher. The song was one of the most popular songs sung for the season, “On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me～♪”, and I was given the part of the “5th day of Christmas” to sing. When my turn came around I sang it with full confidence, but when finished everyone in the class started to giggle. Thinking I must have created a joyous atmosphere, I giggled along with them. I only started to feel uncomfortable when I noticed they all giggled at my every turn. Without any remarks from the teacher, I had to sing many times and with each time I had to endure giggles. One of them made a remark at last, “hey, you sound terrible with your Chinese accent!” When the Christmas recital came, I wanted to run and hide away.
Il s’est produit quand j’étais en 5ième année. Lorsque Noël s’approchait, mes camarades de classe et moi étions tous en train de pratiquer une chanson avec les conseils de notre professeur. La chanson était l’une des plus populaires à chanter pour la saison; « On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me~♪ », et on m’a donné la partie du « 5th day of Christmas » à chanter. Quand mon tour est venu, j’ai chanté remplie de confiance, mais après avoir fini, mes copains de classe ont commencé à rire. Pensant que je devais avoir créé une atmosphère joyeuse, j’ai ri avec eux. J’ai seulement commencé à me sentir inconfortable une fois que j’ai noté qu’ils ont tous ri autour de moi. Sans aucune remarque du professeur, j’ai dû chanter plusieurs fois et avec chaque fois, j’ai dû supporter des rires bébêtes. On a fait une remarque enfin, « hé, tu chante terrible avec ton accent chinois ! ». Quand le spectacle de Noël est venu, j’ai voulu courir et me cacher bien loin.
Ever since then, I had avoided singing in public. This event had turned into a traumatizing one only because I had this dream of becoming a singer when I was a child. Since I had learned to feel embarrassed with my accent and my singing, I had given up on my dream... however, dreaming is something one cannot forget that easily. In secret, I would hide under my covers in my room with a tape player and sing ever so quietly. Whenever I was alone, I sang... daydreaming about myself singing on stage. I had an awakening in my late 20s! I have learned to look at things with more simplicity. I started to think, “My future will change depending on whom I chose to see myself as.” One part of me was “the one who lets this trauma manipulate life” and the other, “the one who faces this trauma and fights it.” You will face fear through either one…but I knew I did not want to be a victim. I have decided to fight it, but fight it as myself, with the best of my abilities and strengths. It has been a little over 5 years since, and I have been active as a singer on an internet-based band. I have met a Japanese guitarist through a Japanese music site and we have been together ever since as an internet band. We have participated in contests where we have won first place, have songs out as ringtones, and many more great news have come our way. Now, at 34, the feel of embarrassment still haunts me but I am still fighting at my own pace. I am happy that I have chosen to become my own hero! (Well, singing on stage still remains unsure... but work is still in progress!) I thank this traumatizing experience. It has allowed me to find myself and has given me a chance to embrace something important to me.
Depuis, cela, j’avais évité de chanter en public. Cet événement était devenu assez traumatisant seulement parce que j’ai eu ce rêve d’être une chanteuse quand j’étais petite. Depuis que j’avais appris à me sentir embarrassée avec mon accent et mon chant, j’avais abandonné mon rêve... mais, un rêve est quelque chose que l’on ne peut pas oublier si facilement. En secret, je me cachais sous mes couvertures dans ma chambre avec un lecteur de musique et chanterais toujours si tranquillement. Toutes les fois que j’étais seule, j’ai chanté... tout en m’imaginant en train de chanter sur scène. J’ai eu un réveil vers la fin de mes vingtaines! J’ai appris à regarder des choses avec plus de simplicité. J’ai commencé à penser, « mon futur changerait dépendant de quelle perception de moi même je choisirais de voir ». L’une de mes côtés était « la personne qui se laisse être manipulée par ce trauma » et l’autre, « la personne qui fait face à ce trauma et se bat avec ». On fait face à la crainte par n’importe lequel des deux... mais j’ai su que je n’ai pas voulu être une victime. J’ai décidé de la combattre, mais restant moi-même, avec le meilleur de mes capacités et de mes forces. 5 ans se sont déroulés depuis cela, et j’ai été active en tant que chanteuse dans une bande de musique basée sur l’internet. J’ai rencontré un guitariste japonais par un site de musique japonais et nous avons été ensemble comme une bande de musique d’Internet. Nous avons participé aux concours où nous avons gagné en première place, avons des chansons comme les sonneries cellulaires, ainsi beaucoup plus de grandes nouvelles sont venues à nous. Maintenant, à 34 ans, la sensation de gêne me hante toujours, mais je le combats toujours à mon propre rythme. Je suis heureuse que j’ai choisi de devenir mon propre héros ! (Bien, chanter sur scène reste toujours incertain... mais le travail est encore en marche!) Je remercie cette expérience traumatisante. Elle m’a permise de me retrouver et m’a donné la chance d’embrasser quelque chose importante pour moi.

こんにちは！いつもは浅草からお届けしておりますが、私は今、 モントリオールでホリデーを過ごしています。今までは、来るや いなやショー、そしてそれが終わると東京にとんぼ返りという過 ごし方をしていましたが、 この度初めてゆっくりと、24日間滞在 し、モントリオールライフを満喫することができました。そのお かげで、オールド・モントリオールからダウンタウンまで、街を満 喫したり、出演していたフリンジ・フェスティバル、フランコフォ リ、 ジャズ・フェスティバルなど夏のイベントを体感できたのもと ても嬉しかったです。 ますます、モントリオールのとりこになって しまいそう・・・。
Hi there! I usually write my column all the way from Asakusa, but I am now on holiday in Montreal. Until now, I have made several short trips to Montreal, but these trips were very busy with shows, and I always had to return home to Tokyo almost immediately. For the first time ever, I am able to spend a whole 24 days here in Montreal, and I am experiencing the wonderful feel of its slower pace of life. Thanks to this, I’ve been able to enjoy summer in Montreal by strolling through both Old Montreal and downtown, and getting to see the Fringe Festival, Francofolie and the Jazz Festival. I am getting hooked on Montreal culture more and more...
さて、今回は長く滞在する事もあって、自炊のチャンスも多かっ たので、市場やスーパーマーケットなどたくさんの場所にでか け、食材探しをしてみました。ジャン・タロン市場では、ケベック の旬の野菜の豊富さにびっくり！日本ではめったに見られない ルバーブや、旬のイチゴに感激し、ついつい買い込んでしまいま した。 ズッキーニもとてもみずみずしく、おいしかったです。
Since this has been a longer stay, and I’ve had the chance to cook for myself, I’ve been roaming about the grocery stores and markets to look for food. At the Jean Talon Market, I was surprised to see the seasonal vegetables of Quebec: Rhubarb (so rarely seen in Japan), fresh strawberries, and even zucchini (which is soft and fresh). So I just keep on buying more!
面白かったのは、 アトウォーター市場。大きなスーパーマーケッ トと並んで立っているけれど、決して引けをとらない存在感。日 本の郊外では、商店街や市場が次々と無くなり、シャッターを下 ろす「シャッター商店街現象」が起きている事を思い出し、 ちょっ ぴり複雑な気分。大きなスーパーは色んなものが手に入るし、遅 くまでやっているからとても便利。けれども市場に並ぶ取れたて の野菜や手作りの食材を見ると、生の魅力のすごさに圧倒され ます。日本でも少しずつ、農業学校の学生たちが農家と食卓を 結ぶマルシェ運動を展開しているけれど、 ここモントリオールの マルシェのように元気な市場が復活するよう、祈らずに入られま せん。だって、サラダの味がぜんぜん違うんだもん！
Atwater market is interesting too. Initially, it seems to be simply a large grocery store, but it is much more than that! In the suburbs of Japan, the concept of outdoor markets is slowly fading away, and so the shop-lined streets with old-fashioned shutters made me feel a little nostalgic. Although I can buy everything I need until late at a larger grocery store, the vegetables and fruit from a local vendor seem so much fresher! In Japan too, students from agricultural colleges have started the “marche movement,” but the marche culture in Montreal is way out of this world! I hope that the marche culture in Japan becomes as lively as the one in Montreal! You can bet that the taste of a simple salad is completely different here!
モントリオールの胃袋体験でもうひとつ印象的だったのは、実は 「豆腐」。 こちらで手に入る豆腐は、基本ハードでしっかりしたも のが多かったので、豆腐ハンバーグを作ったときとてもおいし かったです。 ソフト （絹ごし）も、若干しっかりした印象がありまし た。 しっかり水を切り、裏ごししてオリーブオイルと少々のにんに く、そして、 レモン汁、塩コショウとあえてベジタリアン・トーフチ ーズを作ったらこちらも美味！印象としては、沖縄や中国のお豆 腐に似ているイメージでした。 ところ変われば豆腐も変わる。今 度から旅に出るときは、観光地だけじゃなくて、その場所の胃袋 を探検してみたいな、 と思いました。皆さんも、 日本に来たら、ぜ ひ日本の胃袋探検をしてみてくださいね。もちろん、豆腐を味わ ってみるのをお忘れなく！
You may not believe what impressed me the most during my gastronomic adventures here in Montreal: The tofu! It is somewhat harder than the tofu in Japan—which made the tofu hamburgers extremely tasty. Even the soft tofu was slightly less soft that its Japanese counterpart. By simply removing the water and adding olive oil, lemon juice and salt and pepper, you will have an excellent vegan tofu-cheese. I found the tofu in Quebec to be similar to the tofu in Okinawa and China. It seems that if you change your location, the tofu changes too. The next time I go on holiday, I will visit not only the tourist attractions, but I will also take part in more gastronomical adventures! All of you should also come and enjoy the foods in Japan! And of course, don’t forget to taste the tofu!

Exploration gastronomique à Montréal. Bonjour! Normalement je vous écris d’Asakusa, mais présentement je suis à Montréal en vacances. Jusqu’à présent, j’arrivais à un endroit pour un show et je repartais aussitôt après pour Tokyo. Cependant, pour la première fois pendant 24 jours, j’ai réussi à séjourner tranquillement et à profiter pleinement de la vie à Montréal. Grâce à ceci, j’ai pu contempler à leur juste valeur le Vieux-Montréal et le Centre-Ville. J’ai participé au festival de Fringe. Je suis allée au Francopholie et au festival de Jazz. Ils font parti des nombreux festivals d’été à Montréal. Cette expérience m’a rendu très heureuse, au point ou je suis presque captive de mon amour pour Montréal... Bon, cette fois, j’ai séjourné pour une longue période et ce séjour m’a alloué de la chance pour cuisiner. En cherchant mes ingrédients j’ai visité des marchands, des supermarchés ainsi que plusieurs autres endroits. En visitant le Marché Jean-Talon, je fus émerveillée par la multitude de fruits et de légumes saisonniers en provenance du Québec! Il y avait des légumes que je n’avais jamais vus au Japon comme de la « rhubarbe ». À la vue des fraises, je n’ai pu résister et en ai achetées en grande quantité. Sans oublier les zuchinis fraîches qui étaient succulentes! Le coin que j’ai trouvé le plus intéressant, fut le Marché Atwater. C’était un grand supermarché qui s’étendait sur une large superficie, et qui cependant n’était pas imposant. Dans les banlieues japonaises, les marchés et les petits quartiers de marchands, disparaissent petit à petit. Les marchands et les marchés baissent leurs volets, ceci se nomme le phénomène de volet des quartiers. Cela me laisse avec un léger sentiment de complexité. Dans les grandes épiceries, on trouve de tout et elles sont ouvertes tard le soir ce qui les rendent commodes. Mais au marché nous pouvons voir des légumes et des produits fait maison, qui possèdent une fraîcheur qui est irrésistible. Petit à petit au Japon, les étudiants issuent des écoles d’agriculteurs, s’unissent avec les agriculteurs et les restaurateurs pour refaire des marchés. Malgré leur durs efforts, ce n’est pas du tout aussi réussi qu’ici à Montréal. Mais on n’y peut rien, le goût de la salade est complètement différent! Une autre chose qui a marqué mon expérience gastronomique à Montréal, pour dire la vérité, c’était le « tofu ». Le tofu que je me suis procurée le plus souvent était de consistance ferme. Ceci à fait que lorsque j’ai cuisiné des steaks de tofu, ils étaient drôlement délicieux. Néanmoins, le tofu mou (soyeux) avait une consistance solide. En prenant soin d’enlever l’eau, on ajoute de l’huile d’olive et de l’ail suivi d’un peu de jus de citron, sel et poivre. J’ose dire que cette recette donne un très bon fromage tofu végétarien. En terme d’apparence, cela ressemblait à une image du tofu d’Okinawa et de la Chine. Lorsque le lieu change, le tofu change aussi. Alors je me suis dit, la prochaine fois que je vais voyager, je ne veux pas seulement visiter les lieux, je veux également expérimenter la gastronomie locale. À tous les lecteurs et lectrices, si vous venez au Japon, essayez de faire une experience gastronomique japonaise. Bien sûr, n’oubliez surtout pas de goûter au tofu!

A retro-futuristic hangout for artists and creators. Laïka is an urban style cafe which opened in 1999. As Laïka was the first cafe which boasted a DJ booth in Montreal, local artists and creators alike were attracted to the Electro music, and gradually the cafe became a meeting place for their community. The interior of the cafe was designed by a famous local artist, Nicolas Baier. Bruno, the owner of the cafe, explains that he chose to name the cafe after the first dog to travel to space, a Russian dog named “Laïka” who was aboard Sputnik 2. Before the café’s grand opening, Bruno noted that its interior design was reminiscent of the retro-futuristic feel of the former Soviet Union. At Laïka, patrons can enjoy a different atmosphere depending on when they choose to visit. It’s a great place to satisfy your appetite and chill out with a drink while listening to good music. Laïka chefs head to the market everyday, and carefully pick the freshest ingredients. “Today’s special” is inspired by that day’s pick of ingredients.

Dating someone who doesn’t share your culture (or continent) can be a wonderful learning experience, filled with new sights, sounds, and tastes that you may have never imagined. But beware: The learning which takes place can be one-sided, especially if the two of you don’t make an effort to spend some ‘together time’ in both your home-andnative lands. After I left Japan, Hiro and I learned that absence certainly made our love grow stronger. We texted daily, sent presents, and talked on Skype at all hours of the night. So when Hiro announced his impending trip to Canada, I was deliriously delighted. Not only would I be reunited with my long distance love, I would be able to teach him all there was to love about my country. We began planning the time we would spend together in Canada with an intensity fueled by sleepless nights caused by differing time zones.
Être dans une relation avec quelqu’un qui ne partage pas notre culture ni continent peut-être une expérience très enrichissante, remplie de choses à voir, écouter et goûter que l’on aurait jamais imaginées. Mais attention : cet apprentissage peut être partial si les deux ne font pas un effort pour passer du temps ensemble au pays natal de chacun. Après avoir quitté le Japon, Hiro et moi, nous avons réalisé que l’absence de l’autre nourrissait notre amour. On s’écrivait des messages à tous les jours, on s’envoyait des cadeaux, et on parlait par Skype toute la nuit. Donc, quand Hiro m’a annoncé son imminente visite au Canada j’étais folle de joie. Non seulement je retrouverais mon amour à longue distance, mais je pourrais également lui apprendre à aimer toutes ces belles choses de mon pays. On avait commencé à planifier le temps qu’on serait ensemble avec une intensité nourrie par les nuits blanches qu’on passait à cause de la différence horaire.
As his departure date approached, Hiro became more and more excited about his visit to the land of poutine, maple syrup, and ...snow!? No matter how many times I told him that summers in Toronto were indeed hot, it seemed Hiro needed to feel it to believe it. Once here, a scorching summer heat that was beating records of summers past literally melted his incredulity away. Hiro’s time in Canada was not only an education in Canadian culture, but a tool to better understanding his Canadian girlfriend. At our northern Ontario cottage, Hiro observed my extended family spending quality time together – the adults sipping beer on the deck while the kiddies splashed in the water – and suddenly he could grasp why I wasn’t in love with the long hours of overtime expected of workers in Japan. As poor Hiro sweat over outdoor lunches on trendy Toronto patios, he couldn’t help but smile as he remembered that time in Japan when I insisted we have our meal on an otherwise empty patio. And while Hiro watched my father wash the dishes after each meal, he may have come to understand why I had high expectations when it came to help around the house.
Au fur et à mesure que la date de son voyage approchait, Hiro devenait de plus en plus excité devant l’idée de visiter le pays de la poutine, du sirop d’érable et de… la neige!? Malgré le nombre de fois que je lui avais dit que les étés Torontois étaient très chauds, il semblait que Hiro devait le sentir pour le croire. Une fois ici, une chaleur caniculaire qui battait tous les records a fait littéralement fondre son incrédulité. Le temps que Hiro a passé au Canada ne lui a pas seulement appris la culture d’ici, mais lui a aussi aidé a mieux comprendre sa blonde canadienne. Dans notre chalet du nord de l’Ontario, Hiro regardait ma famille passer du bon temps ensemble (les adultes qui sirotaient une bière, les enfants qui éclaboussaient dans l’eau), et tout à coup il a compris pourquoi je ne ravissais pas devant l’idée de faire toutes ces heures supplémentaires qu’on demande des travailleurs japonais. Alors qu’il suait comme un fou lors de nos dîners dans les belles terrasses Torontoises, le pauvre Hiro ne pouvait pas s’empêcher de sourire quand il se souvenait de cette fois au Japon où j’avais insisté qu’on ait notre lunch dans une terrasse vide. Et en regardant mon père faire la vaisselle après chaque dîner, Hiro a probablement compris pourquoi j’avais des grandes attentes en ce qui concernait le ménage de la maison.

As I observed my Japanese man on Canadian soil, I liked what I saw. His stubborn tastebuds fell in love with the cinnamon French toast and sweet maple syrup we had for breakfast more than once. I saw the curiosity in his eyes when our northern Ontario hosts escorted us to our “room” that night: A camper parked right in the middle of bear country. And I was touched to see him pull my 9-year-old cousin in for a hug, a truly Canadian greeting. I learned an important lesson during Hiro’s time in Canada too. Now it was my responsibility to translate a menu, order us a meal, or get us on the right bus—it was my turn to be Hiro’s hero. And I didn’t mind one bit. At some point, amidst the newness of our role reversal, it seemed that the two of us had finally met halfway on a cross-cultural bridge. And this realization kept us together even when we were, once again, oceans apart.

Quand je regardais mon homme japonais sur le sol canadien, j’ai aimé ce que j’ai vu. Ses papilles gustatives têtues sont tombées en amour avec le pain doré à la cannelle et le sirop d’érable sucré qu’on a eu pour déjeuner plus d’une fois. J’ai vu la curiosité dans ses yeux quand nos hôtes nord-Ontariens nous ont amené à notre « chambre » cette nuit : une roulotte stationnée au beau milieu du pays des ours. Et cela m’a touché quand je l’ai vu serrer mon cousin de neuf ans dans ses bras, ce qui est une salutation très canadienne. Moi aussi j’ai appris quelque chose de très important pendant que Hiro était ici. C’était maintenant ma responsabilité de traduire les menus, de faire la commande, de monter sur le bon bus. C’était à mon tour d’être le héros à Hiro, et cela ne me dérangeait pas du tout. À un moment donné, dans la toute nouveauté de cette inversion de rôles, on dirait qu’on s’est finalement retrouvés à mi-chemin sur un pont entre les deux cultures. C’est cette prise de conscience qui nous a rapproché l’un de l’autre, même quand ont étaient, encore une fois, séparés par un océan.

今回は、イディオムをみてみましょう！ I woke up on the wrong side of the bed というイディオムを聞いたこ とがありますか。言葉の通り、なんとなく意味は想像できるのではないで しょうか。

例えば、 このように使えます。 Johnさんは、いつもに比べてイライラしていて機嫌が悪い。いつもだった ら、 こんなことで腹を立てたりしないのに？とか、彼女がわがままで、 ちっ とも言うことを聞かない。なんで、今日に限って・・・。なんてときに、 She/He woke up on the wrong side of the bed. と、ボソッと言ってみて ください。Why you are so upset? What is wrong with you? というよりも、 奥が深くて良いかもしれませんよ。
Maura: And then, after you’ve been on a few dates, you have been dating them for a few months, then you wouldn’t really say that you’re just dating someone anymore. After time passes it becomes more serious. Harp: Yeah, you can start by saying that you have a boyfriend or you have a girlfriend or sometimes people say that they have a partner. Maura: Yeah, right. You could also say that you’re together with someone.
