C’est au mois d’avril que je crois vraiment au retour du printemps, même si celui-ci débute officiellement le 21 mars. La certitude qu’une tempête de neige ne fera pas surface ou que les températures ne chuteront plus à -20 est bien plus grande! Fait plus important encore, c’est le début des habits de printemps. Y a-t-il meilleur moyen que de dire au revoir aux manteaux d’hiver qu’avec le site web de SOU・SOU? SOU・SOU, basé à Kyoto, fut créé en 2002 par Katsuji Wakisaka, Hisanobu Tsujimura et Takeshi Wakabayashi. Les habits et techniques du Japon traditionnel sont interprétés de façon moderne. En plus de leur présence à Kyoto, ils sont aussi à Tokyo et San Francisco. L’expression de la culture japonaise est au cœur de SOU・SOU et le nom même en est un parfait exemple. Naturellement, nous connaissons tous l’usage courant de sou sou lors d’une conversation –j’adore sosune- et, selon les créateurs, l’utilisation de sou sou est un exemple concret du caractère unique du Japon. Quels sont les aspects de la modernisation du style japonais de SOU・SOU? Débutons avec les magnifiques dessins de textile créés par Katsuji Wakisaka. Démarrant souvent en tant que cartes postales, l’inspiration pour ses dessins est le changement des saisons au sein de la nature ainsi que les dessins japonais traditionnels. Anecdote intéressante, Wakisaka fut le premier designer Japonais de Marimekko (1968-1976), une compagnie finlandaise de textile reconnue. Passons maintenant à un élément nettement japonais qui engendre souvent un rire en Occident : jika tabi. Croyez-le ou non, ce soulier qui sépare le gros orteil ne fut pas inventé pour faire rire mais plutôt pour offrir un meilleur équilibre. Toutes les chaussures de SOU・SOU sont faites à la main au Japon et, afin de s’adapter à un style de vie moderne, la semelle souple traditionnelle est remplacée par une semelle plus épaisse s’apparentant à des chaussures de sport. C’est leur ligne masculine et féminine qui m’attira en premier lieu au site web de SOU・SOU. Le kimono est un habit emblématique du Japon et, surtout en Occident, ne paraît pas pratique pour un habit de tous les jours. Le kikoromo est une réponse de SOU・SOU à ce dilemme pour les femmes. Les hommes peuvent se diriger vers la ligne kei i, une interprétation moderne des termes kabuita mono ou kabuki mono de l’époque Muromachi voulant dire des gens sans soucis avec un habit différent. Leurs habits sont intéressants et attachants grâce à l’harmonie des éléments traditionnels : la forme, les dessins et le tissu. Le cotton Chizimi, Bizen et Ise se trouvent dans plusieurs des collections; Le Chizimi est un cotton crêpe japonais, le Bizen est un cotton produit en 1950 pour les uniformes scolaires et l’Ise est un export spécial de la ville Tsu.

Étant amoureuse de la culture japonaise ainsi que de l’histoire de l’art et du costume, je suis fascinée par SOU・SOU. Bien que je n’aie aucun morceau de SOU・SOU, je voulais mettre de l’avant leurs efforts pour maintenir et adapter les techniques et esthétiques japonaises. J’espère que l’information fournie dans cet article vous encouragera non seulement à découvrir leur histoire mais aussi celle des habits japonais et leur fabrication.

Discovering Japan through: SOU・SOU English
Even though March 21st marks the official beginning of spring it doesn’t become a possible reality for me until April. That’s when I feel more assured that a snow storm won’t hit us again and temperatures won’t drop to -20! More importantly, it gets me excited for spring clothing. What better way to say goodbye to winter coats than by browsing the website of SOU・SOU? SOU・SOU was created in 2002 by Katsuji Wakisaka, Hisanobu Tsujimura and Takeshi Wakabayashi and is based in Kyoto. Their products are a modern interpretation of traditional Japanese clothing and techniques. In addition to their Kyoto location, they also have a store in Tokyo and San Francisco.
What are some of the aspects that allow SOU・SOU to offer a modern Japanese style? Let’s start off with the beautiful textile designs created by Katsuji Wakisaka. Often debuting as postcards, the designs are inspired by changes of the season in nature and traditional Japanese patterns. Fun fact, Wakisaka was the first Japanese designer to work for Marimekko (1968-1976), a well-known Finnish textile company. Moving on to a distinctly Japanese item that often results in many giggles in the West: jika tabi. Be-

lieve it or not, this split toed shoe wasn’t invented for laughter but rather to offer better balance. All SOU・SOU shoes are handmade in Japan and in order to adapt to our modern lives, the traditional thin sole is replaced by a thicker, sneaker like sole. Their men and women’s line is what first drew me to the website of SOU・SOU. The kimono is such an emblematic feature of Japan and, especially in the West, seems impractical for daily wear. The kikoromo is SOU・SOU’s answer to this dilemma for women. Men can turn to the kei I clothing line, a modern interpretation of kabuita mono or kabuki mono,Muromachi era terms describing carefree people with a different dress. Their clothing line is fascinating and endearing to me because of the traditional elements that come together: the overall shape, the patterns and the fabric. The Chizimi, Bizen and Ise cotton are found in many of their collection; Chizimi is a Japanese crepe cotton, Bizen is a cotton produced in 1950 for school uniforms and Ise is a special export from Tsu city. Being a lover of Japanese culture as well as art and costume history, I am mesmerized by SOU・SOU. Although I don’t own any pieces by SOU・SOU, I wanted to bring to light their efforts in maintaining and adapting Japanese techniques and aesthetics. I hope the information I’ve highlighted in this article will encourage you to discover not only their history but also the clothing and fabrication history of Japan.

The expression of Japanese culture is at the heart of SOU・SOU and the name itself is an entertaining example. Of course, we all know how often sou sou is used when speaking – my favourite is sosune- and according to the founders, the use of sou sou is a direct expression of Japan’s uniqueness.

Motherhouse is a new play set in an area of Montreal called Verdun, that was recently presented by Centaur Theater from February to March this year. The work deals with the events of the First World War (WWI), when many local men were sent to the front to fight, and how the inhabitants were made imposed fatalities of the war. With a strong anti-war tone, it’s a portrayal of anarchy and socialism. To learn more, I interviewed Holly Gauthier - Frankel, who plays the narrator and a major supporting role in the play, Lillabeth. -How do you feel about the story, especially as a woman who was born after the war? I'm very devoted to peace and feel strongly about the effects of the "war machine" in the world today, so I truly believe it's a very important theme. We haven't changed much since WWI, and that was one hundred years ago! We need to make a serious change in the world if we are going to survive. That affects us all,

men and women alike. -Please tell us, your most memorable part during the rehearsal process? Working with David Fennario, who is a renowned Canadian playwright, was such a blessing. Not only is he brilliant, but he was there during all the rehearsals so we could really collaborate with him on the script and the way the play started to be born. It was very special. -Do you have a message for the Coco Montreal readers, who've never seen the play? I would be so happy to have Coco Montreal readers come to see the play in the future, because war has impacted Japan in so many ways. It would be great to have the Japanese perspective on this story, which is very Canadian and not usually a story that's told. It's also a very fun piece, with lots of singing and jokes!

狂言回し、そしてリラベット役とし て物語を綴ったホリー・ゴルティエ・ フランケルさんに、この作品につい てお話を伺いました。 戦後生まれの人間として、 そして一 女性として、 この作品についてどう思 われましたか？ 平和について深い想いを抱くと同 時に、今日の世界に多大な影響を与 える戦争兵器の恐ろしさを強く実感 しました。本作のテーマはとても重 要だと思います。人間は、100年前の 第一次世界大戦からちっとも進化し ていないということなのです！生きて 行くために、我々は真剣に世界を変 えていかねばなりません。戦争はす べての人間、すなわち男性にも女性 にも影響するのですから。 稽古中、最も印象に残った出来事 を教えてください。 高名なカナダ人劇作家であるデ ービット・フェナリオ氏と共にお仕事 ができ、非常に光栄だと感じていま す。彼が素晴らしい演劇人であること は言うまでもありませんが、稽古の 全日程を通して稽古場に来て下さっ たので、 この作品が生まれた道のり を踏まえつつ、 しっかりと脚本に取り 組むことができました。 とても貴重な 体験でした。

Français De février à mars, la compagnie du Théâtre Centaur a présenté Motherhouse, une nouvelle pièce dont l'intrigue se déroule à Montréal. L'oeuvre est inspirée de faits historiques qui eurent lieu durant la première guerre mondiale à Verdun d'où plusieurs jeunes hommes furent envoyés au front pour se battre et où les habitants se sont faits imposés les fatalités de la guerre. La mise en scène puissante proclame des idéaux socialistes et même anarchistes, amènent les spectateurs à réfléchir aux conséquences de la guerre. Pour en savoir plus, nous avons rencontré Holly Gauthier-Frankel qui joue la narratrice et un rôle de soutien important dans la pièce, Lillabeth. En tant que personne née après les guerres et en tant que femme, que pensez-vous de cette oeuvre? Très attachée à la paix, j'ai été profondément troublée quand j'ai
réalisé à quel point le développement des armes de guerre ont eu un impact horrible sur le monde qui se perpétue jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Le sujet de cette pièce est donc très important, parce que 100 ans après la première guerre mondiale, on n'a pas avancé d'un iota! Si on tient vraiment à la vie, il faut absolument changer comment le monde fonctionne. Tout le monde subit les effets néfastes de la guerre, autant les hommes ou que les femmes. Pouvez-vous nous raconter ce qui vous a le plus marqué durant les répétitions? J'ai eu l'immense privilège de travailler avec David Fennario, le célèbre dramaturge canadien. Je n'ai pas de besoin de vous dire qu'il est génial. Ce qui était extraordinaire par contre c'est qu'il était présent à toutes les répétitions et ainsi, on s'est tous sentis impliqués dans le processus créatif de la pièce. C'était une expérience vraiment précieuse! Un mot pour les lecteurs de Coco Montréal? Je serais très heureuse si les lecteurs de Coco Montréal avaient la chance de voir la pièce. La guerre ayant marqué l'histoire du Japon au XXe siècle, ce serait très intéressant de connaître le point de vue japonais sur cette pièce qui raconte des événements canadiens dont plus personne ne semble parler. Et en plus, la pièce est super amusante, remplie de chansons et de blagues!

Montreal's #1 Power Spot St-Lawrence River (The Lachine Rapids) When dark thoughts fill your mind you start to feel depressed or tend to take things in the wrong way for no reason. This can easily happen in winter. So, on a sunny day, I went to the Lachine Rapids on the St-Lawrence River, which is my #1 power spot in Montreal. I remember someone say that river shores in Japan are built with concrete and they are not beautiful… anyway, the place I go to very often is the Parc des Rapids in LaSalle. From this park you can watch the powerful Lachine Rapids up close and how the water flows with tidal waves. There are no fences so if you slip and fall, you may be swallowed up by the rapids in no time. Perhaps these

landscapes haven't changed since the time when the first French settlers arrived here and decided to stay on the Montreal island after failing to cross the rapids. I ponder this while watching the rapids. Soon, strangely, it seems some unknown obstacles stuck in my mind are now cleared and I feel lighter. In the neighbourhood, you can observe about 230 species of birds and the area is known for breeding herons. It is also a rich repository of catfish and other fish both big and small, and many insects. In winter, the wind gets colder, so for those who don’t like the cold weather it may be intimidating. However, constant current flow is emitting Qi (vital energy) in the air, and each breath you take you feel the energy is stored in your body. In summer you can enjoy rafting tours and surfing on the rapids. Along the rapids, there are picnic tables where you can enjoy a picnic lunch while
watching the rapids. Near the river mouth of the St-Lawrence River there is the Anticosti Island, a repository of wildlife. On the island, the Quebec government is trying to embark on the drilling of shale oil using our tax money. Quebec Premier Pauline Marois says to consider the bright future of the next 30 years, but at the same time the environment experts say that the big snow that the eastern part of the United States is having this winter is due to the large amount of CO2 emissions disturbing the jet stream. It may no longer be possible to change the course of the world when it's going toward the destruction of the earth, but every time I see myself being kept alive by nature, I believe there must be something individuals like myself can do to prevent it, I think about it a lot lately.

L’aventure à Montréal Rivière St-Laurent (Rapides de Lachine)
Lorsque le cafard nous prend, nous avons tendance à nous sentir déprimé et on prend mal les choses, surtout l’hiver. Je suis donc allé, lors d’un jour ensoleillé, aux Rapides de Lachine de la rivière St-Laurent, mon lieu d’aventure de prédilection à Montréal. Je me souviens de quelqu’un qui disait que les rives au Japon sont construites en béton et ne sont pas belles. Quant à moi, je vais souvent au Parc des Rapides à Lasalle. Vous pouvez voir les puissants Rapides de Lachine ainsi que les grandes vagues d’eau de près à partir du parc. Il n’y a pas de clôture donc si vous tombez vous risquez d’être rapidement engouffré par les rapides. Il se peut que ces paysages n'est pas changés depuis les premiers arrivants Français et que ceux-ci, ne pouvant traverser les rapides, aient decidés de rester sur l'île de Montréal. Je sens ensuite, de manière étrange, que les obstacles inconnus pris dans ma tête sont partis et je me sens plus légère.

Eh bien, un commerce qui exauce ces désirs égoïstes a justement ouvert ses portes en février… Ce sublime lieu « polyvalent », c’est Patrice. Montréal peut se vanter d’héberger le jeune génie de la pâtisserie Patrice Demers qui a évolué dans plusieurs restaurants renommés comme Leméac, Les Chèvres, Laloux et Les 400 coups avant de finalement ouvrir sa propre boutique de pâtisserie. Mis à part Patrice, mentionnons d’abord le sous-chef, Martin, un Français qui s’est développé chez Valrhona, puis Sayaka, une Japonaise qui était responsable des desserts au restaurant Accords. C’est donc avec des employés passionnés et dédiés à l’excellence que l’on forme les meilleures brigades. La réputée sommelière Marie-Josée Beaudoin, codirectrice de la boutique, œuvrait depuis longtemps déjà aux côtés de Patrice. En soirée les jeudis, vendredis et samedis, on profite donc des accords vins et mets légers ou vins et desserts qu’elle a élaborés pour nous faire passer un délicieux moment. C’est Jean-Pierre Viau qui signe le raffiné design du décor, décor qui va de pair avec l’élégance de l’appellation « boutique de pâtisserie ». Dans la pièce se trouvant au fond à droite du vaste commerce, on trouve exposés des livres de desserts plus invitants les uns que les autres; il s’agit en fait de la collection personnelle de Patrice. Marie-Josée et lui donnent d’ailleurs eux-mêmes des cours de pâtisserie et de sommellerie dans cette salle. Le kouign-amann diffuse sa douce fragrance de beurre quand on s’en bourre les joues, la pâte des choux est parfaitement développée, le mariage original des fruits de saison est un succès; c’est simple, choisir parmi le large éventail de produits offerts chaque jour est un moment de pur bonheur. À Montréal comme dans le monde des desserts, le vrai printemps est enfin arrivé.

Ma visite à la cour m'avait laissé avec des raideurs à la nuque mais avait été une expérience positive malgré tout. J'étais heureuse d'avoir pu remplir mon devoir de citoyenne.
