Ranked as the world’s largest jazz festival by the Guinness World Records, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal has transformed, for the past 30 years, the metropolis in a venue where fans of all types of jazz-related music rub shoulders with aficionados of jazz in its purest form. For 11 days, the Festival hosts some 30 countries, 3,000 musicians and public entertainers, 800 concerts — two-third of which are free — and 600 activities, 15 concert halls, 8 outdoor stages and welcomes 2.5 million visitors, from noon to midnight! The Montréal International Dragon Boat Race Festival is an international event that attracts over 50,000 spectators and 200 racing teams. 蔵のある街を、てくてく歩く。

漆喰の白壁と瓦屋根が日本建築の品格と風情を漂わせ、何気ない通りの風景に思わず心が動く。日本では今、江戸時代から明治に掛けて商業の栄えていた地区を再開発するために、古い土蔵をカフェやブティックなどに再利用することで、廃れかけた街並みに新たな息吹を与える町おこしが盛んに行われている。その中でも代表的なのが、岡山県倉敷市美観地区。年間数百万人の観光客が訪れ、伝統的建造物群保存地区に国から指定されている。 JR山陽本線とJR伯備線が停車するJR倉敷駅から、改札を出て左（南東）に向かって歩くこと約７分、白壁と川辺の柳並木のコントラストがなによりも美しい美観地区に到着する。高梁川の支流、倉敷川は古来より運河として利用され、多くの商人が集まり、備中地方の物資が集積する商業の中心として蔵が建ち、現在へ続く街並みが形成されていった。明治時代以降に水運業が衰退した後も、倉敷商人の活躍で紡績業が盛んに行われ、引き続き街が整備された。倉敷川畔の美観地区周辺は、昔ながらの倉敷格子の窓や白壁が修復・再生され、町家はギャラリーや喫茶店、お土産物店などの店舗になっている。中でも「倉敷アイビースクエア」は、旧倉敷紡績所の工場跡地を利用して、ホテルなどを併設する総合観光施設として再生された場所で、赤レンガの外壁を覆う蔦は西洋風の装いを演出している。通り沿いに備前焼を扱う陶芸店が多いのも、もうひとつの魅力だ。備前焼は、釉薬（ゆうやく）を一切使わず、「酸化焔焼成（さんかえんしょうせい）」による赤みの強さが特徴であり、どれひとつとして同じ模様にならない。時間を気にせずにじっくりと器と対峙できるのも旅の利点だし、備前焼の器を使った茶房でお抹茶を頂くのも、非日常的な贅沢というもの。私自身、新しいものよりも古いものに価値を見出すタイプなので、日本に帰国した際には、JR レールパスをフル活用して、こういった街を幾度も訪れては、レトロとモダンの妙技を楽しんでいる。てくてく、てくてく、街道を、裏小路を、私の道を、今日もてくてく。

Most representative of this transformation is the Bikan District of Kurashiki-City in Okayama. Millions of tourists visit here every year, and the Japanese government has designated it a traditional architecture preservation site.

Récemment, le Japon a été activement engagé dans différents projets de revitalisation communautaire, où les anciens entrepôts ont été rénovés et transformés en cafés et en boutiques. Cela permet de réaménager les zones où ces entreprises avaient prospéré durant la période Edo-Meiji, redonnant ainsi une nouvelle vie aux rues abandonnées.

After leaving JR Kurashiki Station, turn left (or southeast) and walk for about 7 minutes. You will then arrive in the Bikan district and see beautiful scenery: A row of willow trees along the river contrasts the city’s white walls. Kurashiki River, a branch of the Takase River, has been used as a canal since the old days; many traders gathered here, making it an ideal place to build warehouses (as the centre of goods gathered from the Bishu area). The streets of today were formed during this time. Even after the Meiji Era, when the water transportation industry dissolved, the spinning industry actively continued. The streets were then naturally maintained. Presently, Kurashiki’s latticework windows and white walls are restored to their former conditions, and old houses have been transformed into galleries, tea shops, gift shops, and so on. Among them, Kurashiki Ivy Square, the site of the old Kurabo Industries’ factory, has become an extensive tourist facility that even accommodates a hotel. The ivy covering the red-bricked exterior gives it a western-style look. Other attractions include the many pottery shops featuring Bizen ware, Japan’s oldest pottery-making technique, along the streets. Bizen ware is unique in that the pottery is not glazed, boasts a strong reddish colour, and no two prints are identical. One of the great things about travelling here is that you can browse all day without worrying about the time. Considered a luxury, you can also enjoy powdered green tea served in Bizen ware at one of the many teahouses. I am the type of person who seeks out value in old items rather than new, so I always take advantage of the JR rail pass to visit these kinds of places. Once there, I can enjoy both traditional and modern goods and performances. Today too, I am strolling along the main roads, the back streets, and my path.

Visité par des millions de touristes chaque année, le gouvernement japonais l’a désigné comme site architectural traditionnel protégé. Lorsque vous quittez JR Kurashiki Station, tournez à gauche (ou sud-est) et marchez environ 7 minutes. Vous arriverez alors dans le quartier Bikan et vous verrez de beaux paysages: une rangée de saules le long du fleuve contraste avec les murs blancs de la ville. La rivière Kurashiki, une branche de la rivière Takase, a été utilisée comme un canal depuis l’ancien temps; de nombreux commerçants s’y sont installés, ce qui en fait un endroit idéal pour construire des entrepôts (c’est le centre de la zone Bishu). Les rues d’aujourd’hui ont été formées pendant cette période. Même après l’ère Meiji, lorsque l’industrie du transport maritime disparut, l’industrie du textile s’y est développée activement. Les rues étaient alors naturellement maintenues. À l’heure actuelle, les treillis des fenêtres et les murs blancs de Kurashiki sont restitués à leurs états originales, et les vieilles maisons ont été transformées en galeries, salons de thé, boutiques de cadeaux, et ainsi de suite. Parmi eux, Kurashiki Ivy Square, le site de l’usine de l’ancienne Kurabo Industries, est devenu un vaste complexe touristique qui accueille même un hôtel. Le lierre couvrant les briques rouges lui donne un look occidental. Les autres attractions incluent les ateliers de poterie, mettant en vedette le Bizen, la plus ancienne technique de poterie du Japon. La technique Bizen est unique en ce que la poterie n’est pas lustrée, ce qui lui donne une forte couleur rougeâtre, et il n’y a pas deux articles identiques. Ce qui est bien lorsqu’on voyage ici, c’est que vous pouvez magasiner toute la journée sans vous soucier de l’heure. Considéré comme un luxe, vous pouvez également profiter du thé vert en poudre servi dans un bol Bizen à l’un des nombreux salons de thé.

Je suis le genre de personne qui cherche la valeur dans des pièces anciennes, plutôt que dans le neuf, donc j’ai toujours profité de la passe ferroviaire JR pour visiter ce genre d’endroits. Une fois là, je peux profiter à la fois des marchandises traditionnelles et modernes. Aujourd’hui encore, je me promène sur la route principale, les ruelles, et mon chemin.

その歴史はなんと600年以上前にさかのぼるパリ市民の生活を支える地下下水道を見学

パリを訪れた人は皆、パリが他の古い大都市と比べて通りがすっきり見えると感じることだろう。美観をそこなう電柱や電線、電話線などがすべて地下に埋められているからである。それと、通りのわきからチョロチョロ水が出てごみをきれいに洗い流している光景もおなじみになっている。これらはすべて下水道のおかげである。

■パリ市内、地下に2100キロの下水道パリの下水道の歴史は1370年にさかのぼる。当時、Hugus Aubriot というパリの行政をつかさどっていた人が、パリの汚水が道路に垂れ流しになっていて不衛生だったり、伝染病が流行したことに心を痛め、まずモンマルトルから下水処理を地下で行うための工事を始めた。その後、「太陽王｣と呼ばれ、さまざまな改革を果たしたルイ14世（1638～1715）の時代に、パリの中心を流れるセーヌ川に沿って下水道の工事が着手された。これをナポレオン１世（1769～1821 ）が受け継ぎ、30キロの下水道が完成した。さらに19世紀、ナポレオン３世（1808～1852）の時代、セーヌ県知事を務めたオスマン男爵が行ったパリ大改造計画によって下水道が飛躍的な発展を遂げた。その後、1914年から1977年の間に下水道は1000キロになり、さらに現在は2100 キロにも及んでいる。

■セーヌ川のアルマ橋たもとから・・・この下水道博物館は、エッフェル塔の近く、セーヌ川にかかるアルマ橋のたもと（左岸）にある。「VISITE DES EGOUTS DE PARIS」のサインがあるのですぐにわかる。入場券売り場横の階段から地下へ降りると、まずパネルなどでセーヌ川と下水道の仕組みを解説。さらに奥へ進むと浄化槽があり、実際の下水道の上を歩いて行く。汚水の臭いを心配したが、案外臭いはなかった。ところどころ、真上の地上道路名の標識があるのが現実的で面白い。それにしてもすべてを地下に埋めてしまう、という壮大な都市づくりがあったからこそ、美しいパリの街の景観があるのだ、とつくづく感心してしまった。

The first thing you notice when you arrive in Paris is just how clear and clean the city seems when compared to other cities that are as old. Power poles, electric cables and telephone lines, which normally create unsightly landscapes, are actually all buried underground. Another common sight in Paris is

to see water running down the sides of the streets, washing away all the trash. It is Paris’s remarkable sewer system which makes these things possible.

The sewer tunnels beneath Paris span 2100km. The history of Paris’s sewers goes as far back as 1370 A.D. At that time, Hugus Aubriot, who was an administrator of Paris, was worried that the unhygienic practice of discharging sewage into the streets would result in an epidemic. Aubriot was the one who started to move the sewers underground. Later, Louis XIV, who was known as “le Roi-Soleil” (the Sun King), began to build the sewer system along the Seine . Finally, Napoleon would take over and complete the first 30km of underground sewer tunnels. It is, however, in the 19th century, the era of Napoleon III, that we see the most dramatic development of Paris’s sewers. Under Duke Haussmann, governor of the Seine department, a plan for a dramatic ”renovation of Paris” was carried out. Eventually, between 1914 and 1977, another 1000km of tunnels were added, and today the sewers extend 2100km.

From the foot of the Seine’s Alma bridge. The museum dedicated to Paris’s sewers is located at the foot of the Alma Bridge, which reaches over the Seine River near the Eiffel tower. You will find it easily as there is a sign there saying “VISITE DES ÉGOUTS DE PARIS”. Walk down to the basement floor from the stairs beside the ticket counter. Here, the Seine and sewer system are explained on a panel. There is a water-purifier tank inside and you can take a walk throughout the actual sewer tunnels. I was worried about smelling the filthy water but it wasn’t that bad, surprisingly. Within the tunnels, there are signs that show the names of the roads right above ground. The whole experience is interesting and feels very authentic.

La toute première chose que vous remarquerez en arrivant à Paris est sa propreté comparé aux autres villes de son âge. Les pôles d’électricité, câbles électriques et lignes téléphoniques, qui habituellement créent un décor assez déplaisant, sont complètement cachés sous terre. Vous verrez aussi de l’eau qui coule par les côtés des rues et qui se débarrasse des déchets. C’est le remarquable système d’égouts de Paris qui rendent tout cela possible.

Les tunnels des égouts de Paris s’étendent à 2100 kilomètres L’histoire de ses égouts remonte à 1370 AD. Hugus Aubriot, l’administrateur de Paris à cette époque, était préoccupé par la pratique peu hygiénique de déverser les déchets dans les rues, ce qui pourrait éventuellement causer une épidémie. Aubriot est celui qui décida d'entreprendre l'enfouissement des égoûts. Par après, ce fut Louis XIV, le « Roi-Soleil », qui a commencé à construire le système d’égouts tout au long de la Seine. Finalement, Napoléon poursuivit les travaux et compléta les premiers 30 kilomètres de tunnels d’égouts sous terre. Par contre, ce n’est qu'à l'ère de Napoléon III, à l'initiative du Baron Haussmann, gouverneur du département de la Seine, qu'un important plan de développement du système d'égoûts parisiens est mis en chantier ayant pour objectif la rénovation de Paris. Éventuellement, entre 1914 et 1977, un autre 1000 kilomètres de tunnels fut complété, et les égouts d’aujourd’hui s’étendent à 2100 kilomètres.

Sous le pied du pont de l’Alma de la Seine Le musée dédié aux égouts de Paris se situe au pied du pont de l’Alma, qui se trouve sur la Seine près de la tour Eiffel. Vous le trouverez facilement car il y a une pancarte qui dit « VISITE DES ÉGOUTS DE PARIS ». Descendez au niveau du sous-sol en utilisant les escaliers à côté de la billetterie. Ici, la Seine et le système d’égouts sont expliqués sur un panneau. Il y a un purifiant d’eau à l’intérieur et vous pouvez vous promener par les vrais systèmes d’égouts. Inquiète de sentir l’odeur des eaux sales, j’ai été surprise par le fait qu'elle était supportable. Dans les tunnels, il y a des pancartes qui informent du noms des rues qui se situent au dessus de nous. L’expérience est tout à fait intéressante et authentique. J’ai été très impressionnée par l’histoire et le processus de la construction de toute cette section urbaine. Les égouts sous-terrain aident à donner son très beau paysage et son cachet très unique à la ville de Paris.

“Whatever I see around here looks all cool”--- this month, I would like to introduce the Saviour of hot summer as if I want to hum a phrase of Basho Matsuo’s. It is Kem CoBa, an ice cream & sorbet shop opened on Fairmount Avenue in May, 2012. Kem CoBa means “ice cream of the 3rd aunt” in Vietnamese. They are particular about all kinds of superb ice cream. There are no preservatives nor artificial colorings, and they thoroughly choose high quality ingredients, carefully concentrating on pulling out true tastes during the ice cream making process. For example, they use well-known flavours of powdered green tea such as Camellia Sinensis – famous for its high quality of tea leaf. And they deliberately pull out the ingredients of hibiscus by soaking their dried petals in cool water for 48 hours. The fruit content such as mango and passion fruit is so very high that it opens our eyes widely. Furthermore, lime used for lime mint is squeezed manually so that its bitterness is reduced. Ngoc-san studied at ITHQ and is now active as an artisanal chocolatier. Vincent-san, Co-Manager and companion , was a pastry chef in France. When this couple came back from an Asian trip after one year, the time was ripe to open Kem CoBa. Their rich experiences, natural gifts, daily efforts, and lots of inspiration gained from the Asian trip flowered into this dream shop. A co-authored book on the Asian trip, published by Modus Vivendi, is titled Asie-un voyage culinaire (Asia – a culinary trip) and is full of tasty photos and

happy episodes about the destinations. Ice creams such as Vanilla, Chocolate, Masala chai, Powdered Green Tea, etc. with fruit sorbet are recommended. It was at Kem CoBa where I tasted this wonderful “marriage” for the first time in my life. The best one among them is “salty butter”! Contrary to its name, soft sweetness melted on the tongue. And when I added the rich taste of mango, I fell in love…. Kem CoBa, the shop where this couple welcomes you with a big smile. Cool inside the mouth, but warm in heart. Montreal’s oasis in this summer, Kem CoBa is very crowded today as well!

«Tout ce que je vois par ici semble cool»--- J’aimerais, ce mois-ci, présenter le Sauveur de l’été ardent comme si je voulais fredonner une phrase de Basho Matsuo. C’est Kem CoBa, magasin de crèmes glacées et de sorbets ouvert sur l’avenue Fairmount en mai 2012. Kem CoBa signifie «crème glacée de la 3ème tante» en vietnamien. Il se spécialise dans toutes sortes de crèmes glacées superbes qui ne contiennent ni agents de conservation ni colorants artificiels. Kem CoBa choisit minutieusement des ingrédients de haute qualité, se concentrant subtilement à faire ressortir des goûts authentiques pendant la fabrication de crèmes glacées. Il utilise par exemple des saveurs de thé vert en poudre bien connues telles que le Camellia Sinensis – connu pour sa haute qualité de feuilles de thé. クーラーのない我が家は暑くて暑くて蒸し釜状態、こんなに暑いとお肌のお手入れも面倒くさくなってきます。今回は日本食でよく使われる「里芋」をご紹介しつつ、ほったらかしのお肌がぷりぷりになれるような簡単レシピを考えました。里芋は中華食材屋さんで手に入ります。じゃがいもとは違うねっちりした独特の食感です。これは水分が多いためで、その分他の芋よりカロリーは低いです。免疫を高めたり、食欲を増進して胃腸の働きを整える効果もあるので食欲のない夏にもいいですよ。手羽先はコラーゲンがたっぷりなのでこれを食べた翌朝はお肌がぷりぷりになります。

お肌ぷりぷり里芋と手羽先の煮物

Chicken wings

里芋…８個手羽先…６本水…１カップ（250ml）だしの素…小さじ2 酒…1/4カップ砂糖…大さじ2 しょうゆ…大さじ2 みりん…大さじ1 1. 手羽先はくさみをとるために熱湯をざっとかけ、水でさっと洗う 2. 里芋の下処理をする。まず天地（上と下）を切り落としてから側面を上から下に少しずつ皮をむいていく。厚めに皮をむくと見た目が綺麗に仕上がる。ぬるぬるするので手を切らないように注意。 3. 皮をむいた里芋に塩をふり、もんでから水で洗い流す。このぬめりは塩分に溶ける性質を持っている。

My house feels like a sauna right now because I don’t have air conditioning. On these especially hot days it can become difficult for me to take proper care of my body and skin. So today I am going to introduce “satoimo” (taro root) with a recipe that will help bring your resilient skin back in no time. You can find taro root at Chinese grocery stores: it is sticky and has a noticeably different texture from potatoes. This is because taro root contains more moisture, which means it also has fewer calories than potatoes. It will help to boost your immune system, and also stimulates the appetite and makes your stomach work effectively, so it’s good to have around when you lose your appetite during the hot days of summer. Chicken wings are also good for you because they contain plenty of collagen. After you eat them your skin will be extra firm and soft.

Stewed taro root and chicken wings for firm and soft skin Ingredients: Taro roots … 8 Chicken wings … 6 Water … 1 cup Soup base (powder) … 2 tsp Sake … ¼ cup Sugar … 2 tbsp Soy sauce … 2 tbsp Mirin … 1 tbsp 1. To remove their smell, pour hot water on the chicken wings then wash with water quickly and set aside. 2. Prepare the taro roots. First cut off the tops and bottoms, then peel the rest from end to end. If you peel the skin thick it will look nicer. Taro is very slippery so be careful not to cut your fingers.

Ma maison ressemble à un sauna en ce moment parce que je ne dispose pas de climatisation. Lors de ces journées particulièrement chaudes, il peut devenir difficile pour moi de prendre soin de mon corps et de ma peau. Alors aujourd'hui je vais vous présenter le "satoimo" (taro) avec une recette qui contribuera à revitaliser votre peau en un rien de temps. Vous pouvez trouver les racines de taro dans les épiceries chinoises : il est collant et a une texture nettement différente des pommes de terre. C'est parce que la racine de taro est plus humide, ce qui signifie qu'elle a aussi moins de calories que les pommes de terre. Elle aidera également à renforcer votre système immunitaire. La racine de taro stimule aussi l'appétit et aide à la digestion. Il est donc bon d’en avoir sous la main quand vous perdez votre appétit durant les chaudes journées d'été. Les ailes de poulet sont également bonnes pour vous, car elles contiennent beaucoup de collagène. Après que vous les mangez, votre peau sera très ferme et douce.

Compote de racine de taro et ailes de poulet pour raffermir et adoucir la peau. Ingrédients: Racines de taro ... 8 Ailes de poulet ... 6 Eau ... 1 tasse Base de soupe (en poudre)… 2 cuillères à thé Saké... ¼ tasse Sucre ... 2 cuillères à soupe Sauce soja ... 2 cuillères à soupe Mirin ... 1 cuillère à soupe 1. Pour supprimer l’odeur, versez l’eau chaude sur les ailes de poulet, puis laver à l’eau rapidement et mettre de côté. 2. Préparer les racines de taro. D’abord, couper les hauts et les bas, puis les peler le reste de haut en bas. Le Taro est très glissant donc soyez prudent de ne pas vous couper les doigts.

3. After peeling the taro roots, sprinkle salt and rub, then wash thoroughly with water. The stickiness in taro roots can be dissolved with salt.

Le Festival du nouveau cinéma et Fantasia mettent en place une première collaboration d’envergure dans le cadre de leur édition 2012 en présentant une rétrospective conjointe dédiée au 100e anniversaire de la société de production et de distribution japonaise NIKKATSU, en collaboration avec la Cinémathèque québécoise.

Ce film a été présenté en 1968. Une île où vivent des gens avec une foi profonde est frappée par une tempête et un tsunami. Les insulaires croient que la cause derrière tout cela est le mauvais comportement de Nekichi, un soldat qui est de retour de la guerre. Cela conduit à une ordonnance rendue par le chef de l’île: Nekichi est enchaîné dans une fosse qu’il a à creuser, afin d’apaiser les dieux pour avoir enfreint les coutumes de l’île.

Tetsuya meets Yoshii and asks to postpone the payment date, but the enemy Otsuka gang steals the deeds to the property then murders Yoshii. Tetsuya, yakuza et favori de Kurata, le chef de son clan, décide de se ranger. Kurata lui offre un travail régulier. Mais cette faveur leur vaudra les critiques d’Otsuka, un autre chef de clan. This is a comedic film about a postman who is caught in middle of criminal cases against his will. A very ordinary postal worker is mistaken for a hitman and a weapon smuggler, and now he is chased by the police. He becomes desperate, drinks too much and starts reading letters he was supposed to deliver. One of the letters was written by Sayoko who is in a hospital suffering fromcancer. Cette comédie met en scène un facteur qui est pris dans le milieu des affaires pénales contre sa volonté. Il est un facteur banal qui est pris pour un tueur à gages. Il est poursuivi par la police. En raison de son désespoir, il se saoule et commence à lire les lettres qu’il était censé livrer. She broke up with her soon-to-be-born baby's father who is American. Now she is broke and has nowhere to go, then she decides to visit a tenement where she lived with her parents when they escaped from loan sharks years ago. The landlady with sharp tongue is now bedridden, and Mitsuko's childhood friend and his uncle run a totally quiet small restaurant. For some reason Mitsuko ends up helping the restaurant. Soon the restaurant becomes very busy with customers who are attracted by Mitsuko's personality. Mitsuko est enceinte de 9 mois. Elle a rompu avec le père, qui est américain. Maintenant, elle est sans argent et a nulle part où aller, donc elle décide de visiter un appartement où elle vivait avec ses parents quand ils se sont échappés des usuriers un an plus tôt. La propriétaire est maintenant clouée au lit. Elle rencontre un ami d’enfance qui gère un petit restaurant avec son oncle . Pour une raison quelconque Mitsuko finit par travailler au restaurant qui devient très populaire, puisque les clients sont attirés par la personnalité de Mitsuko.

ケンカして和解しないまま父親が事故で他界した小学6年生のももは、母と親戚のいる瀬戸内海の汐島に引っ越してくる。父親がももへと一言だけ書き残した手紙を手に、父が何を伝えたかったのかわからないまま、空虚な日々を過ごす。そんなある日、「見守り組」と名乗る妖怪3人組に出会う。

In Tokyo, the Youth Protection Ordinance is enforced and minors are forbidden to circulate in the streets at night. The use of Internet is also regulated. A group of youths called “Salut” is fighting against the ordinance. One day, they receive information about a secret society conducting human experiments. In the midst of their investigation, a girl with a Japanese sword, Saya, enters the scene.

A 6th grader named Momo has a fight with her father, and before they are reconciled, her father dies in an accident. Momo moves to her mother’s hometown, a remote island named Shio. Her father left her a letter with only two words. She is unable to understand the meaning of the letter and spends days engulfed in a feeling of emptiness. One day, she encounters 3 imps who call themselves “Watchers”.

La jeune Momo a une dispute avec son père, et avant qu’ils ne soient réconciliés, son père meurt dans un accident. Momo déménage dans la ville natale de sa mère, une île lointaine nommée Shio. Son père lui a laissé une lettre, avec seulement deux mots. Elle est incapable de comprendre le sens de la lettre et passe des jours prise d’une sensation de vide. Un jour, elle rencontre 3 lutins qui se disent “Veilleurs”.

Deux jeunes lycéens s’amusent à simuler des «faux suicides». Alors qu’ils ont soigneusement entretenu leur «fausse relation», ils gardent leurs secrets pour eux. Toutefois, au moment où leurs secrets s’entrechoquent, leur monde idéal se transforme en un cauchemar. Quel est le sens de la vie? C'est l’amour! La souffrance! Le plaisir! COCO・NICOなるままに…暑中お見舞い申し上げます。気がつけば２０１２年も後半突入、前半以上に皆さんと感動をシェアできますように…。プラトン曰く「音楽は心に魂を、思いに翼を与える」。その翼を自由自在に羽ばたかせて、とうとうモントリオールまで日本の伝統音楽を運んできてくれた方が、今月のモントリオールのナイスレディ、板橋僚子さんです。さてここで問題。僚子さんが奏でる伝統楽器は何？ ①和太鼓 ②津軽三味線 ③篠笛 …正解は驚くなかれ、①②③全て！特に和太鼓歴は日本にて既に１４年。モントリオールのスーパースター、嵐太鼓のパフォーマーとしても、２０１０年４月から活躍しています。初めて僚子さんがカナダの地を訪れたのは、２０００年のワーキングホリデー。バンクーバーにて現在のご主人様と出会い、一緒に日本に住み、娘さんも誕生しましたが、２００９年１０月、モントリオールへやってくることになりました。出産後お休みしていた津軽三味線。再会のきっかけは昨年の大震災でした。僚子さんの地元である福島県にて原発問題が起き、僚子さんは仕事も手に付かないほど、精神不安の状態に陥りました。そんな時にふと手にした津軽三味線に、深く心を癒されたそうです。そして、昨年のイベント「祭りジャポン」にて見事な演奏を披露、今年の３月に、震災復興チャリティコンサート「祈り」において、観客を魅了する音色を届けたのです。コンサートでは、僚子さんの奏でる和の音色から、日本への思慕の深さがひしひしと伝わってきました。西洋式教会にその強い思いは響き渡り、聴き手の心にしかと刻まれたのです。現在は旧市街やメトロにて、津軽三味線を演奏することもしばしば。美しい着物姿での珍しいパフォーマンスに、道行く人の多くが足を止めます。「日本文化を海外で紹介する」という長年の夢を日々実現している僚子さん、今後の益々の活躍が楽しみです！

Since the first half of 2012 suddenly rushed by, I wish to share some excitement with everyone for the second half… Plato said: “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.”; go ahead and let those wings flap freely because this month’s nice lacy is finally the person who brought traditional Japanese music to Montreal, Mrs. Ryoko Itabashi. Yet the question remains; which traditional Japanese instrument does she play? 1) Taiko Drums, 2) Tsugaru Shamisen (a 3 string instrument) , 3) Shinobue (a Japanese flute)

… The correct answer is sure to surprise you; it is all three of them! She notably has 14 years of experience with the Taiko Drums in Japan. Having been a performer with Arashi Daiko since April of 2010, she is a Montreal superstar. The first time Mrs. Ryoko came to Canada was in the year 2000 with a working Holiday visa. She met her current husband in Vancouver, yet they went to live in Japan together, and had a daughter. She finally came to Montreal in October of 2009. She had taken a break from the Tsugaru Shamisen after giving birth. Last year’s big earthquake left her incapable to help with the nuclear power plant problems in Fukushima prefecture, Mrs. Ryoko’s hometown, and placed her into a state of mental anxiety. In this state of mind she was motivated to restart playing the Tsugaru Shamisen which brought her a great deal of relief. Last year’s “Matsuri Japan” she played a stunning performance and this year in March, at the earthquake disaster reconstruction Charity Concert "Inori", her music captured the audience. In the concert, Mrs. Ryoko played the zen music with such depth, that the yearning of Japan was acutely transmitted. The sounds that echoed inside of the western church vibrated strong memories inside of the hearts of its listeners. Today, you can sometimes hear the melody of the Tsugaru Shamisen in the old town and in the metro. The rarity of a performance done in a lovely Kimono is enough to stop many passers in their steps. Mrs. Ryoko is realizing her dream from long ago “to present Japanese culture abroad”. We definitely look forward to her future successes!

La première moitié de l’année 2012 est déjà passée, et pour la deuxième moitié j’aimerais partager avec vous quelque chose d’intéressant. Platon a dit : « La musique est une loi morale. Elle donne une âme à nos cœurs, des ailes à la pensée, un essor à l’imagination. Elle donne un charme à la tristesse, à la gaieté, à la vie, à toute chose ». Alors laissons ces ailes se déployer parce que la personnalité montréalaise de ce mois-ci est Madame Itabashi Ryoko, la femme qui a introduit la musique japonaise traditionnelle à Montréal. Mais savez-vous de quel instrument joue Madame Itabashi ? 1) Du taiko ? (tambour japonais) 2) Du tsugaru shamisen ? (style rythmé de luth à 3 cordes) 3) Du shinobue ? (flûte japonaise traditionnelle) La réponse va vous surprendre : elle joue des trois ! Itabashi Ryoko a joué du taiko au Japon pendant 14 ans et a rejoint le groupe montréalais Arashi Daiko en 2010. Elle est venue pour la première fois au Canada en 2000,

avec un visa vacances-travail et c’est à Vancouver qu’elle a rencontré son mari. Ils sont allés vivre au Japon, ont eu une petite fille et sont revenus à Montréal en 2009. Elle a interrompu le tsugaru shamisen après la naissance de sa fille. Le grand tsunami de l’an passé et l’incident nucléaire de Fukushima qui s’est ensuivi l’ont rendue anxieuse et elle s’est sentie impuissante face aux tourments de sa région natale, Fukushima. C’est dans cet état d’esprit qu’elle a repris le tsugaru shamisen, ce qui lui a apporté un grand apaisement et atténué sa peine. Au festival « Matsuri Japon » de l’an dernier, elle a offert une prestation époustouflante et au concert de charité « Inori » venant en aide aux sinistrés japonais, sa musique a captivé l’assistance. Durant le concert, Itabashi Ryoko a offert une performance de musique zen avec tant de profondeur que le languissement du japon a été parfaitement transmis. Les sons dont l’écho résonnait dans l’église ont ravivé les souvenirs présents dans le cœur des spectateurs. Aujourd’hui, on peut parfois entendre la mélodie du tsugaru shamisen dans le Vieux-Port ou dans le métro. Le spectacle rare d’une performance réalisée par une femme vêtue d’un joli kimono suffit à arrêter les passants. Itabashi Kyoko est en voie de réaliser son vieux rêve : « Faire découvrir la culture japonaise à l’étranger ». Nous attendons impatiemment ses succès futurs !

SNOW WHITE &THE HUNTSMAN (2012)

ついに待ちに待った映画が公開された。少女の頃、誰もが一度は憧れた「白雪姫」のリメイク作品。さらにTwilightのヒロインとして一躍有名になったクリスティン・スチュワートが主演となれば、おそらく私だけでなく、多くの女性がこの作品に期待するのではないだろうか。ストーリーはよく知られている「白雪姫」の大筋に沿って展開される。シャーリーズ・セロン演じる継母の女王が、白雪姫の若さと美しさを妬んで彼女を殺そうとするのだ。一つ大きく違うのは、オリジナルストーリーでは脇役だったはずの猟師が、この映画では白雪姫を守り、彼女と共に戦うヒーローとなる点。配役に女性人気の高いChris Hemsworthが抜擢されたことからも、彼と白雪姫との間に今後何かしらの感情が生まれるだろうということは容易に想像できる。この映画の中にはもう一人白雪姫を愛する王子が登場するが、白雪姫が毒リンゴを食べた後、彼女の目を覚まさせるのはいったい誰なのか。その点を期待しながら鑑賞してもらいたい。

The movie I was waiting for has finally been released: the remake of “Snow White”, which every woman once enjoyed back when they were little girls. Kristen Stewart of the “Twilight” saga stars in the movie, making it only natural for many of us to look forward to this release.

The film retells the story of the very famous character and features Charlize Theron. She plays the queen and Snow White’s stepmother, who tries to kill her out of jealousy of her youth and beauty. Then, the storyline takes a different direction from the original tale, because the Huntsman, who previously had a very minor spot, fights alongside Snow White in order to save her life. Chris Hemsworth takes on this role, and since he is very popular with the ladies, it is only imaginable for his character and Snow White to develop feelings for each しかし、この作品は単なる恋愛物語ではない。 other as the film progresses. 映画が終わった後少し消化不良を感じていたら、どうやらこの映画は三部作らしい。おそらく次作品はオリジナル色がより強くなることだろう。今から待ちきれないが、その前にトワイライトの最終作を鑑賞しなくては。

This film is not only about romance, it is also about how a young woman must become an adult after enduring considerable hardship. There are certain scenes of violence that may lead some viewers to cover their eyes, but this fantasy film can still be enjoyed together as a family. The audience will also appreciate the comedic performances of the 7 dwarves; they are lighter than in the original story. The film also displays Charlize Theron’s breathtaking beauty. It is difficult to believe that this is the same person who played a forty-something woman

in “Young Adult,” which I reviewed in the February issue of Coco Montreal. By doing this film, she has proven her versatility as an actress. After watching “Snow White and the Huntsman,” I felt like something was missing, but then I learned that this is the first part of a trilogy. I believe that the sequel will be quite different and I already cannot wait to see it. But first, I need to watch the final “Twilight” movie.

« Blanche-Neige et le Chasseur »

Le film que j’ai tant attendu vient finalement de sortir. C’est le "remake" de l’histoire de Blanche-Neige, un récit que toutes les femmes ont aimé lorsqu’elles étaient petites. Kristen Stewart, de la saga « Twilight » tient la vedette de ce film; il est donc tout naturel pour bon nombre d’entre nous d’attendre sa sortie avec impatience. Le film raconte à nouveau l’histoire d’un personnage très célèbre joué par Charlize Theron. Cette dernière interprète la reine et belle-mère de Blanche-Neige, qui essaye de la tuer par jalousie de sa jeunesse et de sa beauté. Puis, le récit prend une direction complètement différente de celle de l’histoire originale, car cette fois le chasseur, qui ne tenait qu’un rôle mineur dans l’histoire originale, lutte aux côtés de Blanche-Neige afin de lui sauver la vie. Chris Hemsworth interprète le chasseur et, comme il est très populaire auprès des dames, il est va de soi que son personnage et celui de BlancheNeige développent des sentiments l’un pour l’autre alors que le film progresse. Cependant, le prince éprouve aussi des sentiments pour notre héroïne. À vous

de découvrir qui réveillera BlancheNeige après qu’elle ait croqué la pomme empoisonnée! Ce film n’est pas seulement un récit romantique; il traite également de la manière avec laquelle une jeune femme doit devenir adulte après avoir affronté des épreuves considérables. Certaines scènes violentes pourraient inciter quelques spectateurs à se couvrir les yeux, mais ce film peut tout de même être regardé en famille. Les spectateurs apprécieront également la performance comique des sept nains, qui est beaucoup plus légère que dans l’histoire originale. Le film démontre aussi la beauté à couper le souffle de Charlize Theron. Il est difficile de croire que c’est la même personne qui a interprété une femme d’une quarantaine d’années dans le film « Jeune adulte », que j’ai présenté dans l’édition de février de Coco Montréal. Ce nouveau film illustre toute la polyvalence de l’actrice. Après avoir regardé « Blanche-Neige et le Chasseur », j’ai eu l’impression que quelque chose manquait, mais j’ai ensuite appris que ce film constitue le premier d’une trilogie. Je crois que la suite sera très différente et je suis très impatiente de la regarder. Mais avant cela, je dois me consacrer au dernier film de la série « Twilight ».
