新緑が日に日に深まりを見せるモン トリオール。4月30日に着任してから一週間 が経った新井総領事に話しを聞いた。 モントリオールの第一印象は、 「現地の方と 懇談して、感じのよい人が多いなとまず思 いました」 とのこと。 新井総領事は、1956年1月7日に横浜市で 生まれ育つ。1982年に外務省へ入省後、 フ ランス大使館（1994～1995）やメキシコ大 使館（1996～1999） で公務にあたり、 日本国 内では（財）岐阜県国際交流センター副理 事長（2000）、経済産業省産業技術環境局 参事官（2001）、外務省文化交流部人物交 流課課長（2002）などを務め、経済協力開 発機構【OECD：Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development】 （2004 ～2006）のパリ本部、 ブラジル大使館 （2007～2008） とポルトガル大使館（2009 ～2011） で公使を歴任してきた。 「ブラジルでは、 日本人の気質である誠実 さや勤勉さで、移民としての苦労を克服し ながら、特に子供の教育に熱心に取り組 み、今やご子孫は皆さんブラジルの要職で 活躍してらっしゃることには感銘を受けまし た。 また、ポルトガルでは日本に興味を持っ ている若者が多く、 さまざまな交流イベント を行いました」 と在任当時を振り返る。 前任地のポルトガルでは、 『日本のポップカ ルチャー』や『日本料理と日本における食習 慣』の講演を行い、現地で日本を紹介する 活動などにも精力的に取り組んだ。 「今年は姉妹都市としてハリファックス市 と函館市が30周年を迎え、来年はモントリ オール市と広島市が15周年を迎えることと なっており、一層の交流が期待されます。 ま た、地元との経済や文化交流を通して、 日本 への関心を高めて頂けるように講演活動も 出来る限り行いたいと思っています」 と、抱 負を語る。 新井総領事が信条としていることは、 【あせ らないであきらめない】 。目標を最後まであ きらめずに少しずつでも達成に向かって努 力する、だそうだ。

Each passing day, the leaves are getting greener in Montreal. On April 30th, Mr. Arai was appointed as new Consul General of Japan. We spoke with him one week after he took up his new post. When asked about his first impression of Montreal, he responded: “After talking to some locals, I found many people to be very nice.” Consul General Arai was born on January 7th, 1956 in Yokohama City where he grew up. In 1982, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), and worked at both the French Embassy (1994–1995) and the Mexican Embassy (1996–1999). In Japan, he became the Vice President of Gifu International Centre (2000), Director of global environmental affairs for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (2001), and Director of the Exchange Program Division (MOFA, 2002). He also served as Minister at the French division of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (2004–2006), the Embassy of Brazil (2007–2008), and the Embassy of Portugal (2009–2011). “In Brazil I was very impressed by the Japanese immigrants who had overcome hardships by employing the typical Japanese traits of honesty and hard work. In particular, they focused on their children’s education, and now their descendants work in key positions in the country. In Portugal, many young people have an interest in Japanese culture, so we organized many cultural exchange events.” Consul General Arai also performed lectures on “Japanese Pop
Culture” and “Japanese Cooking and Diet,” and worked hard to introduce Japanese culture to the Portuguese people. “This year, Halifax and Hakodate City celebrate their 30th anniversary as sister cities. And next year, it will be the 15th anniversary for Montreal and Hiroshima. So we expect to have further cultural exchange between these cities. I’m hoping to speak about Japan, and to promote cultural exchange in order to increase interest in Japanese culture.” Consul General Arai’s principle of life is “Be patient and don’t give up.” He says he wants to try to reach his goal by taking it one step at a time. He also hopes that the Japanese consulate is able to build a network of people who work in various Japan-related fields. In his new role, it is expected that he will forge a bridge between the people of Montreal and Japan.

Chaque jour qui passe, les feuilles sont plus vertes à Montréal. Le 30 avril dernier, M. Arai a été nommé nouveau consul général du Japon. Nous avons parlé avec lui une semaine après sa nomination. Lorsqu'on l'interroge sur sa première impression de Montréal, il a répondu: "Après avoir parlé à des gens du coin, j'ai trouvé les gens très gentils." M. Arai est né le 7 janvier 1956 à Yokohama, où il a grandi. Au Portugal, beaucoup de jeunes ont un intérêt pour la culture japonaise, alors nous avons organisé de nombreux événements d'échanges culturels. » M. Arai a également effectué des conférences sur la culture pop japonaise, sur la cuisine japonaise et l'alimentation. Il a travaillé dur pour faire connaître la culture japonaise au peuple portugais. «Cette année, Halifax et Hakodate vont célébrer leur 30e anniversaire en tant que villes jumelées. Et l'année prochaine, ce sera le 15e anniversaire de Montréal et Hiroshima. Donc, nous nous attendons à de nouveaux échanges culturels entre ces villes. Shiseido contributes to the everlasting desire of female customers - “The desire to be beautiful”. It has a proud history of 140 years since the establishment of the business. This year, they are welcoming the 20th anniversary of their canadian division. I interviewed the President of Shiseido Canada Inc., Keiichi Fujii. In 1969, Shiseido started selling “Zen” for the first time via an agency in Montreal, Canada. Afterwards, Shiseido Canada Inc. was launched to start up its full-scale business structure in 1992. What is the company policy at Shiseido?
is “Beauty in a moment, in a life”. In order to support the cosmetics lives of our customers, we strive to include health matters in our business in cosmetics. “ About EUDERMA - this year’s promoted product. “EUDERMA has a high capacity for water retention in low temperatures, and has a combination of moisturizing ingredients that become less sticky in high temperatures and humidity levels. It keeps your skin ideally moisturized in any environment, and corrects the rhythm for skin regeneration. EU means ‘good’ and DERMA means ‘skin’ in Greek. This toner, that derives its name from “good skin” in Greek, was created over 100 years ago in Japan. It had its formula changed into the current one in 1997. From a study of the data – feelings have an effect on the potency of cosmetics. Shiseido holds a seminar called the “Shiseido Life Quality Beauty Seminar” based on this premise. The focus of this seminar is mainly aged and handicapped people. Its purpose is to help each person pass a comfortable and healthy daily life. This seminar is held all over Japan as a locally engaged activity. “We visit welfare facilities for elderly and handicapped people to teach basic uses of cosmetics, provide beauty related information, present knowledge on taking care of one’s skin and techniques for the wearing of make-up. This activity is conducted, with adaptations to the local needs, in foreign countries as well. We have been conducting the beauty seminar at Momiji Senior Centre, a welfare facility in Toronto, in Canada since a few years ago, and have received good renewals.” The group mission of Shiseido is “Through consulting with many people, we discover new and deep values that create a beautiful cultural life.” Mr. Fujii always thinks of this mission deeply and commits his business to the question that is kept in his mind “How can I make women in this world beautiful?.” (Issued on April 12, 2012)

Cette année, elle fêtera donc le vingtième anniversaire de son établissement au Canada. Pour l’occasion, Iromoto Nobuo s’est entretenu avec Fujii Keiichi, Président de Shiseido Canada Inc.
Au sujet d’EUDERMA - le produit dont Shiseido fait la promotion cette année. « EUDERMA possède une forte capacité de rétention d’eau à basse température, et dispose d’une combinaison d’ingrédients hydratants qui collent moins à haute température et à taux d’humidité élevé. Il permet de garder une peau bien hydratée dans n’importe quel environnement, et corrige le rythme de régénération de la peau. « EU » signifie « bien, bon » et « DERMA » veut dire « peau » en grec. Cette lotion, qui tient donc son nom du grec « belle peau », a été créée au Japon il y a plus 100 ans. Sa formule traditionnelle a été remaniée en 1997, et est depuis restée la même ». Selon une étude chiffrée, les sentiments agissent sur l’efficacité des cosmétiques. Shisheido a mis au point un séminaire basé sur ce principe, intitulé « Le séminaire Shiseido - Qualité de vie et beauté ». Cherry on the cake - a cute expression appealing to the senses. It has many meanings such as “reward” or “last trouble before it comes true.” When you say “Cherry on the Cake” in Montreal, it means, frankly, the cake shop which opened in September, 2011. Mikaël-san, a pastry chef from Toulouse,France, creates his own pastry world using powdered green tea and herbs, based on traditional pastry-making techniques. The shop motto is “Gourmand of Nature.” Having the idea that the pleasure of a meal lies in enjoying the fine quality of its ingredients, Mikaël devotes himself solely to using 100% organic flour and sugar, without preservatives, artificial food colors, or processed foods. Plentifully used fruits are produced locally. Furthermore, he uses herbs such as thyme and vervein harvested from his field. It is a source of freshness, as if I can hear the sounds of the earth breathing. For those who have allergies, Mikaël is busy increasing the types of cake that don’t include gluten. The other owner of the pâtisserie is his wife, Alla. With her, he enjoys sharing the blessings of nature in every season with his customers. One of the popular items is lemon tart. The tartness of fresh lemon, which makes me feel blessings of the sun, and the creamy sweetness, which is soft as if melted, fade into each other, making an excellent duet. Blueberry and cassis with thyme play a beautiful symphony, without losing their original flavors. Faites tremper les algues wakame séchées dans un bol rempli d’eau et laisser reposer pendant 10 minutes. Une fois ramollies, pressez pour faire égoutter l’excès d’eau.

Couper le concombre en tranches très minces et les couper en deux. Ajouter une pincée de sel et laisser reposer pendant quelques secondes. Le concombre va s’humidifier. Essorer l’excédent d’eau.
3.
Coupez la chair de crabe en morceaux de 5 centimètres, puis coupez en lanières de 2mm. Si vous ajoutez du gingembre, on le prépare de la même manière.
4.
Dissoudre la base de soupe de poudre Bonito dans l’eau tiède. Ensuite, ajoutez le vinaigre de riz, le sucre et le sel, et mélangez bien.
5.
Ajouter le concombre, l’algue de wakame, la chair de crabe et le gingembre (facultatif). Refroidir la préparation au réfrigérateur. Servir froid pour profiter de sa saveur.

Soak the dried Wakame seaweed in a water filled bowl and let stand for 10 minutes. Once it softens, squeeze out and drain excess water.

Cut the cucumber into very thin cross sections and cut them in half. Add a pinch of salt and let stand for a few seconds. The cucumber will moisten. Squeeze out excess water.

Cut the crab meat stick into 5 centimeter pieces, and then make 2 millimeter shreds. If ginger is added, prepare it in the same manner.
4.
Dissolve the powdered Bonito soup base into lukewarm water. Then, add rice vinegar, sugar and salt, and stir well.

Add in the cucumber, Wakame seaweed, crab meat and ginger (optional). Cool the preparation in the refrigerator. Serve chilled to enjoy its flavor.

“Guess the Japanese word” is the word game where I, the Japanese person, gives you, the readers, clues to guess what Japanese word I am. This game will be featured every second month. Now what kind of Japanese word am I this month? Use Marcel Proust’s words of wisdom as a hint: “Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom..” Hi! I come to see you every day. Many people deliver me to you because you are a really nice person. However, my original meaning is rare and valuable. Your gentleness, your existence—we take them for granted, but I don’t want to forget that both are valuable, and even miraculous. My job is to deliver this view to people. How to call me varies a lot based on Japanese dialects or location. “Okini” is famous in the Kansai area, but there are also many other variations: “Gonen ni irimashite” in Okayama ,”kanbo” in Akita, ”dandan” in Ehime, ”choujou” in Kumamoto, and ”nifee debiru” in Okinawa. It is like a foreign language! It’s exciting because I feel like I can become a foreigner. It is often said that I come from the Portuguese word “obrigado” since our pronunciation is similar; but I have been in Japan long before Japan and Portugal made a connection. I think I’m the Number One word that foreigners in Japan remember for the first time. Same with Japanese children when they are first picking up the language. I am essential for living peacefully. Votre gentillesse, votre existence--- on les prend pour acquis, mais je ne veux pas oublier qu'elles sont toutes les deux précieuses et même miraculeuses. 私の中でケイト・ブランシェットのイメージは 「強い女性」だ。彼女の出世作ともなった本作 品は、強い女性の一人である英国女王エリザベ ス一世の成長を描いた、壮大な歴史ドラマだ。 当時弱小国だった英国は、 スコットランドを初 めとする周囲の大国との軋轢、国内の新教と旧 教の争いなど数多くの問題を抱えていた。父ヘ ンリー６世の庶子として生まれ田舎でひっそり と暮らしていた少女が、突然女王になることを 宣告され、それらの困難を全て背負わされるこ とになる。当然のことながら、最初から全てうま くはいかない。数々の失敗を経て、 「強くならな ければ英国を守ることができない」 と実感した エリザベスは、少女の心を捨てて崇拝されるべ き 「英国女王」 として振る舞い、生きていくことを 決意する。物語の終盤で彼女は長かった髪をば っさりと切り、家臣たちの前で宣言する。 「私は 英国と結婚します」。彼女は生涯誰とも結婚する ことがなかった。
For me Cate Blanchett is a “strong woman”. Her career breakthrough was when she embodied the growth of Queen Elizabeth, one of England’s strong women, which was a grand historical dramatic movie. At that time, England was a weak nation in disarray; it struggled with problems involving Scotland and its surrounding nations as well as with its own previous and new religions. Elizabeth was born of Henry VI’s, as his illegitimate child; she lived a peaceful life in the countryside, until she was suddenly proclaimed queen of England and had all of the country’s problems rest upon her shoulders. Unsurprisingly, things did not go well at first for her. After numerous failures, Elizabeth decided that “If I do not become stronger I cannot protect England”. Therefor she throws away her old values in order to worship and become “queen of England”. At the end of the story she cuts off her long hair in front of her servants and says: “I will marry England.” In her lifetime, she has never married anyone.

Cate Blanchett's performance in this film is a masterpiece. Between the first and the second half of the story, facial expressions, behaviors, and tones of voice are noticeable. This process demonstrates to what lengths an innocent girl is willing to go to become queen. This movie is worth watching either just to see this actress’ performance or, of course, for people who like history; women will also enjoy Elizabeth’s love story. Another movie that is very good and known as the
sequel to this movie amongst its fans is "Elizabeth the Golden Age," thus it is recommend to watch them together. Whenever we are faced with a situation where we have no other choice but to become stronger, perhaps anyone changes to becomes stronger. Yet in that situation, like Elizabeth, sacrifice of something is probably required in the process.

Pour moi, Cate Blanchett représente un exemple d’une « femme forte ». Sa carrière a pris son envol lorsqu’elle a incarné la reine Elizabeth, l’une des femmes fortes de l’Angleterre, dans une œuvre dramatique et historique grandiose. À l’époque où se passe le récit, l’Angleterre était une nation affaiblie et déstabilisée; elle luttait contre des problèmes impliquant l’Écosse et les nations voisines tout en faisant face à des problèmes opposant son ancienne et sa nouvelle religion. Elizabeth était la fille illégitime d’Henry VI et elle vécut une existence paisible en campagne jusqu’à ce qu’elle soit soudainement proclamée reine d’Angleterre et se retrouve aux prises avec tous les problèmes de la nation. Entre la première et la deuxième moitié du récit, la transformation de ses expressions faciales, de ses comportements et de son intonation est spectaculaire. Ce processus illustre jusqu’où une innocente jeune fille est prête à aller pour devenir reine. Ce film vaut la peine d’être regardé tant pour la performance de cette actrice que pour son récit historique, sans compter que l’histoire d’amour vécue par Elizabeth saura en charmer plus d’une. Elizabeth : L’âge d’or est un autre excellent film, connu par ses amateurs comme étant la suite du film Elizabeth. Je vous recommande donc de regarder ces deux films de manière consécutive.

Ex: “I feel lonely. No one cares about me.” (一人ぼっちに感じるよ。誰も私のこと気にしてくれな いんだもん。) Alone is an adjective. It means you’re on your own. （形容詞: 一人ぼっち、独り者) Ex: I like to live alone in my apartment. (私は、 自分のアパートで独り暮らしするのが好き！)

3) Quite vs. Quiet
Quite is an adverb. It means a little or a lot, but not completely. (副詞: かなり、すっかり、なかなか) Ex: “She’s quite a good singer.” (彼女は、なかなか良い歌手だよ。) Quiet is an adjective. It means “calm” not noisy. (形 容詞:静かな、落ち着いた、穏やか) Ex: “I live in a quiet neighborhood.” (私は、閑静な住宅地に住んでいる。)
1) Advice vs. Advise
Advice is a noun. It’s an opinion or suggestion. (名 詞: アドバイス、意見、提案) Ex: “If you want my advice, don’t go to that place” (私のアドバイスがほしいのであれば、あの場所にい かないで！) Advise is a verb. It means to give information or suggest. (動詞: アドバイスする、勧める、提案する) EX: “I advise you to go to the doctor.” (私は、あなたに医者に行くことをお勧めします。)
2) Lonely vs. Alone
Lonely is an adverb. It means you’re unhappy because you’re not with other people. (副詞: 孤独 な、淋しい、一人ぼっち)
