先月号で紹介したのは大崎下島。今月紹介するのは、名前がそっくり な 「大崎上島」。大崎下島の北隣にある兄弟のような島だ。瀬戸内海に浮かぶ 島の中ではわりと大きめの島で、 モントリオール島の西にある 「ペロ島(île Perrot)」 とほぼ同じくらいの面積(約40㎢)に、約8千人が暮らしている。 大崎上島には橋がない。舟に乗らなければ、本州はおろか隣の島に行くことも できない。生活に必要な物は島に１軒あるスーパーでそろうが、 それ以外の物 を買うためには海を渡らなくてはならない。 なんと不便な生活だろうか。 それでも、 この島の魅力に取りつかれて他県から移住する人が増えている。世 界を旅するバックパッカーもよく訪れ、長期滞在する者も多い。私自身も今夏 初めて訪れたのだが、 なんだか居心地がよく 「また来よう」 「帰って来たい」 と思 った。島の素晴らしい自然環境も魅力なのだが、島の人たちとの交流が、 とて も自然で心地よいからではないかと思う。“橋のない島”というと閉鎖的な寂し い印象だが、 この島に来てそのイメージは払拭された。島の人々と話をすると、 楽しくて心がリラックスし、 なんだか故郷に戻って来たような気持ちになる。 そ れは、人々が旅人を心から受け入れ、 お客様ではなく家族や友人に接するよう に話すからではないかと思う。単に人なつこさとか、優しさだけでなく、心の根 底に大らかな包容力を感じるのだ。私の勝手な想像だが、 この人々の不思議 な包容力には、 この島のユニークな歴史が関係しているのではないかと思って いる。 瀬戸内海は、古代から九州、朝鮮、中国への航路として利用されて来た。船は 途中、燃料や食料を積んだり、風待ちをしたり、長旅に疲れた船乗りたちを癒 すために、瀬戸内の島々に寄港した。江戸時代には、全国の農産物や物産を 運ぶための航路としてその繁栄はピークに達した。 中でも大崎上島の 「木江港 （きのえこう）」 は瀬戸内最大の港町として栄えた。造船業が盛んで、物資の調 達だけでなく船の修理もできるため、行き交う船は必ず木江港に停泊した。国 内最大規模の歓楽街があり、 多くの船乗りたちが港に降り、 女性との逢瀬や買 い物に湯水のように金を使ったという。 この島で、人々は何百年もの間、旅人を迎え、見送って来た。瀬戸内海の小島 ではあるが、島は本州の町以上に物資が豊かで、 また異文化に触れる機会も 多かった。外国人との交流も、大都市よりむしろ歴史が深いくらいだ。島の人 々には、外国人や島外の人々や文化を柔軟に受け入れ、心から歓迎する気質 が、古代から脈々と受け継がれているのではないだろうか。 それが、 この島全 体を居心地の良い空間にしているように、私には思えるのだ。

We introduced Osaki-Shimojima Island to readers in a previous issue. This month, we will talk about an island that shares a similar name: Osaki-Kamijima. Think of it as a brother to the island of Osaki-Kamijima, located to its north. When compared to the other islands of Setonaikai, it is relatively big, boasting an area of approximately 40km2, with a population of close to 80,000 people— almost the same as Île Perrot on the west side of the Island of Montreal. There is no bridge that connects the other islands to Osaki-Kamijima Island. If you don’t get on a boat, you can’t get to the main island of Japan or any neighbouring islands. You can buy goods necessary for daily living at the island’s supermarket. However, if you want more than the essentials, you need to cross the sea to go shopping. How inconvenient! Nonetheless, the number of people who are moving to this island from other prefectures is increasing. Many backpackers travelling around the world often visit Osaki-Kamijima for a long time. I visited at the beginning of the summer, and I really enjoyed myself. I even thought about going back for another visit. This wonderful island’s natural environment attracts many people. However, I think the main reason for
all of its visitors is the fact that interacting with the island people is really pleasant. “An island without a bridge” gives you the impression that the island is closed-off from the world, or even lonely, but when I arrived, this image disappeared from my mind. When you talk to the people of this island, you will feel happy and relaxed like you are back home. This is probably because island people seem to accept visitors whole-heartedly and talk to them as if they are—not visitors—but family or friends. It is not only their kindness, but also a tolerance that seems to come from the bottom of their hearts. It may simply be my imagination, but I believe that this mysterious tolerance is connected to the unique history of this island.
L’expression « île sans pont » peut vraiment donner l’impression d’une île coupée du monde, voire isolée, mais cette image disparut de mon esprit dès mon arrivée. En discutant avec les gens de l’île, l’on ressent un bonheur et une sérénité semblable à celle que l’on éprouve en rentrant à la maison. Cela tient probablement du fait que les gens de l’île semblent accueillir les visiteurs à bras grands ouverts en leur parlant non pas comme à des visiteurs, mais comme s’ils étaient des amis ou des proches. Ce n’est pas seulement leur gentillesse, mais aussi leur tolérance qui semble venir tout droit du cœur. Ce n’est peut-être que mon imagination, mais je crois que cette mystérieuse tolérance est liée à l’histoire unique de l’île.
Setonaikai has been used as a sailing route to Kyushu, North Korea, and China since early days. On the way to their destination, boats would stop at Setouchi Island ports to bring fuel and foods on board, to wait for the wind to die down, and to work off frustrations due to long journeys. During the Edo period, Setonaikai flourished and reached its peak as a sailing route for transporting crops and goods from all over Japan. Among the ports, Kinoe Port in Osaki-Kamijima Island was the largest in Setouchi. Because the shipbuilding industry was thriving, the port was able to accommodate a number of goods and supplies and could also repair damaged boats. For this reason, passing boats always chose to stop at Kinoe Port. In those days, the biggest entertainment district in Japan was located there, and it is said that many seamen stopped at this port to meet women and spend money like water.
La mer intérieure de Setonaikai a depuis toujours été utilisée comme route de navigation vers le Kyushu, la Corée du Nord et la Chine. En route vers leur destination, les bateaux s’arrêtaient au port de l’île Setouchi pour faire monter à bord du carburant et de la nourriture, pour attendre que le vent s’apaise et pour échapper aux frustrations accumulées au cours de longs périples. Pendant l’époque Édo, la région de la mer intérieure a prospéré pour atteindre son apogée comme route de navigation pour le transport de récoltes et de biens provenant de partout à travers le Japon. Parmi ses ports, celui de Kinoe, sur l’île d’Osaki-Kamijima, était le plus important de la région de Setouchi. Comme l’industrie de la construction navale connaissait un grand essor, le port pouvait accueillir un certain nombre de biens et de marchandises et pouvait également réparer les bateaux endommagés. The people of this island welcomed travellers and saw them off for hundreds of years. Even though it was a small island, it had more goods than the main island towns, and there were many opportunities to come into contact with foreign cultures. The history of meeting foreigners is longer than that of Japan’s big cities. The people from Osaki-Shimojima Island welcome foreigners, outsiders, and new cultures with open hearts. I wonder if this type of personality has slowly evolved since ancient times, resulting in a comfortable space for all throughout the island.

Nous vous avons présenté l’île d’Osaki-Shimojima dans une édition précédente. Ce mois-ci, nous vous présenterons une île qui possède un nom similaire; Osaki-Kamijima. Elle pourrait en fait être considérée comme une île sœur d’Osaki-Kamijima, qui est située plus au nord. Avec sa superficie d’environ 40 km2, elle est relativement grosse si nous la comparons aux autres îles de la Setonaikai (la mer intérieure de Seto). Cette dernière est habitée par une population de près de 80 000 habitants, ce qui équivaut presque à la population de l’île Perrot, située à l’ouest de l’île de Montréal. Aucun pont ne relie Osaki-Kamijima aux autres îles. Si vous ne montez pas à bord d’un bateau, vous ne pourrez vous rendre ni sur l’île principale du Japon, ni sur aucune île avoisinante. Vous pourrez par contre vous procurer tous les produits nécessaires à la vie quotidienne au supermarché de l’île. Cependant, si vous avez besoin de produits qui ne sont pas essentiels, vous devrez traverser la mer intérieure pour faire vos courses. N’est-ce pas pratique? Cela dit, le nombre de personnes provenant d’autres préfectures qui viennent s’installer sur l’île augmente. Il arrive souvent que des voyageurs aventureux provenant de partout à travers le monde fassent un séjour prolongé sur l’île d’Osaki-Kamijima. Je l’ai moi-même visitée au début de l’été et ce fut très agréable. Je considère même y retourner pour une nouvelle visite. L’environnement naturel de cette magnifique île attire de nombreuses personnes. Je crois par contre que la principale raison qui attire tous ces visiteurs est le plaisir qu’ils ressentent à communiquer avec les gens de l’île.
Les habitants de cette île ont accueilli les voyageurs qu’ils voyaient ensuite repartir pendant plusieurs centaines d’années. Même si c’était une petite île, elle possédait plus de marchandises que les villes de l’île principale et elle offrait beaucoup d’occasions d’entrer en contact avec des cultures étrangères. Cette histoire de rencontre avec les étrangers est plus ancienne que celles des grandes villes japonaises. Les gens d’Osaki-Shimojima accueillent les voyageurs, les étrangers et les nouvelles cultures à bras grands ouverts. Je me demande si cette attitude s’est forgée lentement, depuis les temps anciens, pour faire de l’île un endroit agréable pour tous.

However, because it is so loved, it is true that cheap imitation teas are becoming more and more common. In this month’s Bon Appétit!, I will introduce Esprithé, an authentic tea shop in today’s world. Pour les mélanges de thé qui incluent du thé vert Japonais, je recommande le « Koga » (sa fragrance de fleurs et d’agrumes est excellente) et le «Lantern Festival » (riche en saveurs de baies). Dans la sélection de thés Earl Grey, le produit avec le plus de ventes est le « Lady Grey » (de la bergamote et du jasmin harmonisés), qui est superbe. じつつも、再会を強く望む日本人の姿を描くなら、 というタイトルが外国の方に一番伝 東日本大震災が発生した2011年３月11日 「Reunion」 わりやすいと思いました。 から 「最初の10日間」 に、岩手県釜石市の遺体安 置所で実際に起きた出来事をもとにした映画「遺 体」。君塚良一監督に、作品にこめた想いを聞いた。 「真実を知るのは非常に辛いことだけれど、真実を 知れば、被災者の方の心に寄り添う事ができる」 と 語る君塚監督。 この映画を通じ、多くの人が改めて ー監督自身は 「最初の10日間」 をどのように過ご 被災地に想いを寄せることを、 願わずにいられない。 されていたのでしょう。 （日本全国公開：2013年2月２３日）

東京に住んでいて、 ニュースで災害を知りつつも日 常生活を続けていました。 その後原作と出会い、 同 じ10日間に被災地で起きたできごとを知って衝撃 と感銘を受けました。 それをありのままに劇映画と して伝えるのが、映画監督としての僕の役目だと思 ったことが、 この映画を作ったきっかけです。 ー作品中、遺体安置所の様子がかなりリアルに描 かれていますね。 どの遺体安置所でも、 ご遺体の尊厳を守ろうとい う態度が自然発生的に出て来たのだそうです。何 のマニュアルも無いのに 「きれいにする」 「きちんと 並べる」 と言うことができるのは、 やはり日本人の 凄さなのかも知れません。 撮影においては、取材時にモデルになった方たち に 「事実は見ていないから描けないと思うけれど も、真実は動かさないで下さい」 と言われたことを 忘れないようにしました。 しかし非常に重く、一歩 間違えばご遺族を傷つけるような題材です。関係 者一同、 「これは映画人にできる供養だ」 と思い、 祈るような気持ちで撮影しました。 ー邦題は 「遺体」 ですが、英題を 「Reunion」 にし た想いを聞かせ下さい。 日本人独特の死生観に、 「遺体＝遺された体」 に 再会したい、 というものがあります。悲しみを感
In the movie, the morgue appears very realistic. Even though there is no protocol for these tragedies, every morgue found a way to dispose of the lifeless bodies with dignity and efficiency. Many of them wanted to have proper arrangements: to wash and to honour them, which displayed a real greatness on the part of the Japanese people, I think.
The film “Reunion” (Itai) tells the true – but largely unknown – story of a morgue in the small town of Kamaishi, Iwate during the ten days following the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. I was able to interview the film’s director Ryoichi Kimizuka and ask about his personal reflections, and the thoughtfulness that went into making this film.
While I was shooting this film, I kept in mind what many people I interviewed had told me: ”We don’t believe that you can make a realistic movie because you didn’t witness the events. Please do not change the truth.” The subject is a very heavy one, and if something goes wrong the bereaved will be hurt. With that in mind, the whole staff and I, as filmmakers, became committed to shooting a film that could serve as a prayer in honour of the deceased.
Mr. Kimizuka, how did you spend the ten days following the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami?
Could you tell me why the Japanese title is “Itai” (meaning “dead body”), but the English title is “Reunion”?
I was living in Tokyo and was aware of this disaster from the news, but mostly I continued with my daily life. However, after reading “Itai Shinsai, Tsunami no Hate ni”, the non-fiction account by Ishi Kota of what had happened in the disaster area throughout the following ten days, I was shocked, but also inspired. As a director, I believed it was my duty to make this film and to portray the events with as much realism as possible.
In the Japanese view of life and death, it’s very important to interpret the word “Itai” as meaning “the body left behind after death for the family and friends.” That is, even though the people who grieve are feeling sad for their loss, they still need to view the body of their loved ones. It was in the spirit of this Japanese custom that I felt using the title “Reunion” would be better suited for the non-Japanese viewers to understand what this film is about.

Afterward, director Kimizuka told me, “It’s very heart-wrenching to learn the truth, but once you know it I believe we can be closer to the hearts of the earthquake and tsunami victims.” Through this film, I can’t help but hope that people will once again send their thoughts and prayers to the disaster areas.

Cependant, après avoir lu “Itai Shinsai, Tsunami sans haine”, une chronique d’Ishi Kota qui raconte ce qui c’est passé dans la zone sinistrée dans les dix jours post tsunami, j’ai été choqué, mais aussi inspiré. En tant que réalisateur, j’ai cru qu’il était de mon devoir de faire ce film et de dépeindre les événements avec le plus de réalisme possible. Dans le film, la morgue semble très réaliste? Même s’il n’y a pas de protocole pour ce genre de tragédies, chaque morgue a trouvé un moyen de se débarrasser des cadavres dans la dignité et l’efficacité. Beaucoup d’entre eux voulaient avoir des arrangements appropriés: les laver et leur rendre hommage une dernière fois, ce qui fait preuve d’une réelle noblesse de la part du peuple japonais, je pense. Pendant que je tournais le film, j’ai gardé à l’esprit que plusieurs personnes que j’ai interviewées m’avaient dit: «Nous ne croyons pas que vous pouvez faire un film réaliste parce que vous n’avez pas été témoin des événements. S’il vous plaît, ne changez pas la vérité. “Le sujet est très sensible, une mauvaise adaptation pourrait heurter des gens. Dans cet esprit, l’ensemble de l’équipe et moi-même, en tant que cinéaste, avons décidé que le tournage du film devienne une prière en l’honneur des défunts. Pourriez-vous me dire pourquoi le titre japonais est “Itai” (qui signifie «corps mort»), mais le titre en français est “Réunion”? Dans la conception japonaise de la vie et de la mort, il est très important d’interpréter le mot «Itai» comme signifiant «le corps après la mort appartient à la famille et les amis». Autrement dit, malgré leur tristesse, les gens ont besoin de voir le corps de leurs proches défunts. C’est une façon d’être réuni une dernière fois. C’est dans l’esprit de cette coutume japonaise que j’ai cru bon utiliser le titre “Réunion” qui aiderait les téléspectateurs non-japonais à comprendre ce dont le film parle. Par la suite, le directeur Kimizuka m’a dit: «C’est très déchirant de connaître la vérité, mais une fois que vous la connaissez, je crois qu’il est plus facile de comprendre un peu mieux la douleur des victimes du tsunami.” À travers ce film, je ne peux m’empêcher d’espérer que les gens envoient une fois de plus leurs pensées et leurs prières vers les régions sinistrées.

ーこのイベントはいつから開催されて いるのですか？ ドクター・スケッチーは全世界で開催されている イベントですが、モントリオール支部は5年間、私 が運営者となってからは4年目です。 もともとは私 も参加者の一人だったんです。友人が「あなたに ピッタリのイベントがあるのよ！」 と言うので参加 してみたら、楽しすぎてすっかりハマり、飲みすぎ てしまいました（笑）

- Combien de temps avez-vous dirigé Dr. Sketchy?
(despite being a little hung over – haha!).
- What makes Dr. Sketchy so unique? I remember learning the techniques of classical drawing – how formal it was – almost like looking at the models as objects. One of the things I really like about Dr. Sketchy is how the model is ‘an interactive character’ at the event. At Dr. Sketchy we’re not afraid to say, “Girls are sexy!” So our models are usually performers, such as burlesque dancers, who put on shows for the attending artists. It’s lively and very different. I think a lot of people just come to have fun, which is what Dr. Sketchy is all about: fun for the models and the artists.
- Who are the participants at Dr. Sketchy workshops?
伝統的な美術では、モデルをあたかもひとつの 「モノ」 としてみなすこともあります。 しかし私た ちは、 「裸婦はセクシーな存在なんだよ！」 と堂々 と主張しています。 ドクター・スケッチーではモデ ルは「モノ」ではなく、対話可能で個性豊かな「ひ と」なのです。バーレスクなどのパフォーマーがモ デルですので、スケッチだけではなくパフォーマ ンスも楽しめるんですよ！モデルさんにとっても、 描く方にとっても、楽しいイベントなのではない でしょうか。
I think we have a beautiful mix of all types from around Montreal. We have students, people who enjoy drawing just as a hobby, and even professionals from the video game or animation industry. It’s a nice mixture of all talent levels. It’s especially fun for students, or people who are new to Montreal, because the event is about bringing together artists who wish to meet and interact with other likeminded artists. So it is as much fun as it is a great networking opportunity.

- What would you tell those who have yet to experience Dr. Sketchy?
参加者はプロアマとりまぜて、絶妙なバランスで す。美術学生もいれば趣味で絵を描いている人も いますし、ビデオゲームの製作者やアニメーター などのプロもいます。様々な人たちがいるので、 モントリオールに最近来た人や、新しいアーティ ストとのよき出会いの為の場としても機能してい ると思います。
It’s just a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon: to have some beers, to draw beautiful models, and occasionally, to see a burlesque performance! I’d say it’s a nice way to treat yourself.

Les ateliers du Dr. Sketchy ont été organisé dans le monde entier depuis cinq ans. J’ai dirigé la division de Montréal pendant presque quatre ans. Lorsque je me suis engagée pour la première fois, j’avais commencé en tant qu’une des dessinateurs. C’était une de mes amis qui m’avait parlé de Dr. Sketchy. Elle avait dit : « C’est quelque chose que tu vas adorer! ». J’ai alors participé à mon premier atelier, et puis j’ai vraiment adoré (bien qu’en ayant la gueule de bois – haha!)
- Qu’est-ce qui rend Dr. Sketchy si unique? Je me souviens avoir appris les techniques de dessin classique – comme c’était formel – comme si l’on regardait les modèles comme des objets. Une des choses que j’aime vraiment à propos du Dr. Sketchy c’est que le modèle est un ‘personnage intéractif’ pendant l’événement. Au Dr. Sketchy on a pas peur de dire : « Les filles sont sexy! » Nos modèles sont donc généralement des artistes, tels que danseuses de burlesque qui font des numéros pour les artistes participants. C’est animé et c’est différent. Je pense que beaucoup viennent simplement pour s’amuser, ce qui est tout à fait ce qu’est Dr. Sketchy : amusant pour les modèles et les artistes.
- Qui sont ceux qui participent aux ateliers du Dr. Sketchy? Je pense qu’on a une belle variété de gens d partout à Montréal. Il y a des étudiants, des personnes qui aiment dessiner en tant que passe-temps, et même des professionnels de l’insdustrie de jeux vidéo ou d’animation. C’est un bon mélange de talents à niveaux différents. C’est surtout amusant pour les étudiants, ou les nouveaux-venants à Montréal, parce que l’événement réuni les artistes qui souhaitent rencontrer et communiquer avec d’autres artistes du même avis. C’est donc tout aussi amusant que c’est une belle occasion d’avoir des contacts.
- Que diriez-vous aux personnes qui ne connaissent pas Dr. Sketchy? C’est une façon formidable de passer un samedi après-midi : de boire quelques bières, de dessiner de beaux modèles, et occasionnellement, de voir un numéro de burlesque! Je dirais que c’est une bonne façon de vous pamponner.

日本の首都、東京、人口およそ１,３２０万人その心臓部にあた る新宿駅は、一日の平均利用者数が３４６万人と、モントリオール島近 郊の人口に匹敵するほどだ。常に人々の予測を超えて変化し続けている 東京が持つもうひとつの魅力、それは、緊張から開放されたときに見せ てくれる自然美だと思う。 天気も穏やかな秋の日、JR立川駅から青梅線に乗り込み奥多摩へ。年配 のハイカーが目立つのもこの路線の特徴だろう。 しばし車窓からの風景 を楽しむ。都会のビル群がだんだん遠のいていくに連れ、それが下町の 街並みに入れ替わり、庭先で柿がたわわに実るのどかで懐かしい田舎 の景色へと変わっていく。時代を遡っていくかのような錯覚にさえなる。 のんびりと電車に揺られること１時間あまり、終点の奥多摩駅に到着す る。 この木造の駅は、関東の駅百選にも選ばれているそうだ。 まずは腹ごしらえと、駅前の大衆食堂の暖簾をくぐる。割烹着姿のおばあ さんが「いらっしゃいませ」 と迎えてくれた。壁に張られたメニューから、 迷わず「けんちんうどん」 と 「お稲荷さん」を注文する。カウンターの向こ うでは、妙に顔の似たおじいさんがもくもくと調理をしているのが見え た。まるでレトロ映画の中の情景そのものだ。 タクシーの運転手や作業 服姿のおじさんに混じって、気が付いたら女性は私ひとりだった。 出てきたけんちんうどんは、キノコやサトイモなどの野菜が沢山入った お袋の味で、お稲荷さんもご飯の硬さと出汁のしみ加減が絶妙だった。 やっぱり、私の食に関する勘は相変わらず健在、いまだはずれたことが ない。 お腹も心もほっこり暖かくなったところで、町役場手前の階段から日原川 へと下り、北氷川橋を渡って多摩川へ出る。そこからつり橋を渡って、杉 木立の中の小径を歩いて再び駅に戻る約２時間あまりのルートは、軽装 で森林浴を楽しもうとする者にはもってこいの散策コースだ。 東京都民の水源ともなる奥多摩湖から流れ出た水を両手ですくって飲 んでみる。かすかに甘さを含んだ柔らかい水が喉を潤してくれた。渓谷 美を堪能しつつ、東京の持つ奥深い魅力を実感してまた都心に戻る。 日 帰りの小旅行なのに、心の余裕を取り戻せた旅となった。

This just about matches the population of the island of Montreal. Tokyo has been changing beyond people’s expectations. One of the charm’s of this busy and bustling metropolis is its great natural beauty which can be recognized once one is released from the tension and stress of everyday life. One calm autumn day, I rode the Ome line from Tachikawa station to go to Okutawa. The unique thing about this line is you encounter many elder hikers. I enjoyed the scenery through the window. The buildings in the city get far away, then the scenery changes to streets of old towns, then once again it is replaced by a peaceful and nostalgic countryside with plenty of persimmon trees. It gives me the illusion of going back in time. After about an hour on the train finally we’re at Okutama station. This wooden structure is selected as one of the top 100 Kanto train stations. First I needed to fill my empty stomach. I entered a cheap eatery in front of the train station. An old woman wearing an apron greeted me. From the menu on the wall, without hesitation, I ordered “Kenchin udon (noodle)” and “Inari sushi”. Behind the counter there was an older man cooking without a word, strangely resembling the old woman. It’s exactly like you see in old movies. When I looked around, seeing only taxi drivers and men dressed in work clothes, I realized that I was the only female. The Kenchin udon was full of mushrooms and taro and other vegetables. It was a great taste of home cooking. As for the Inari sushi, the hardness of rice was just right and the soup stock flavour was perfect. After all, my intuition towards food is still going strong. It has never failed me. After both my stomach and heart were warmed up, I went down the stairs in front of the town hall towards Nippara River, then crossed the Kitahikawa Bridge to go to Tama River. From there I crossed the suspension bridge, and walked through the path

Okutama Lake is the water source for Tokyo residents. I scooped the water with both hands and drank. The soft water with its hint of sweetness moistened my throat. I enjoyed the beauty of the valley, and I returned to the city with a fascination of Tokyo’s unique depth. It was a day trip, yet it was the best trip to regain a good space in my heart.

Ce qui correspond environ à la population de l’île de Montréal. Tokyo a évolué au-delà des attentes des gens. L’un des charmes de cette métropole dynamique et animée, est sa grande beauté naturelle que l’on peut apprécier une fois qu’on est libéré des tensions et du stress de la vie quotidienne. Par un paisible jour d’automne, j’ai parcouru la ligne Ome de Tachikawa à Okutawa. La particularité de cette ligne est que vous rencontrez de nombreux randonneurs âgés. J’ai admiré le paysage à travers la fenêtre. Les bâtiments de la ville s’éloignent peu à peu pour laisser la place aux rues des petites villes, puis une fois encore, le paysage se transforme en campagne paisible et nostalgique, avec beaucoup de plaqueminiers. Cela me donne l’illusion de remonter dans le temps. Après environ une heure de train, nous arrivons finalement à la gare d’Okutama. Sa structure en bois fait partie de l’une des 100 meilleures gares Kanto. J’ai d’abord besoin de remplir mon estomac vide. Je suis entrée dans un restaurant abordable en face de la gare. Une vieille femme portant un tablier m’a accueilli. Dans le menu sur le mur, sans hésitation, j’ai commandé «Kenchin udon (nouilles)» et «sushis Inari». Derrière le comptoir, il y avait un homme âgé cuisinant en silence, étrangement ressemblant à la vieille femme. Exactement comme dans les vieux films. Quand j’ai regardé autour de moi, il n’y avait que des chauffeurs de taxi et des ouvriers, j’ai alors réalisé que j’étais la seule femme. Les nouilles Kenchin étaient composées de champignons, de taros et d’autres légumes. Tout aussi bon que la cuisine maison. En ce qui concerne les sushis Inari, la dureté du riz était juste bien et la soupe était parfaite. Après tout, mon intuition pour la nourriture est toujours aussi juste. Il ne m’a jamais déçu! Après que mon estomac et mon cœur ont été réconfortés, j’ai descendu les escaliers en face de la mairie vers la rivière Nippara, puis j’ai traversé le pont Kitahikawa pour aller vers la rivière Tama. De là, j’ai traversé le pont suspendu, et parcouru le chemin de cèdre, pour retourner à la gare. Cette route de 2 heures est parfaite pour ceux qui veulent profiter d’une randonnée à travers la forêt. Le lac Okutama est la principale source d’eau pour les habitants de Tokyo. J’ai puisé l’eau avec mes deux mains et j’ai bu. J’ai bien aimé la beauté de la vallée, mais maintenant je dois retourner à Tokyo. C’était une excursion d’une journée, mais c’était un voyage parfait pour me ressourcer.

夏の間、パリは観光地区以外はレ ストランや店も夏休み（バカンス）を取ると ころが多く、ひっそりとしているが、９月に 入るとたちまち活気を取り戻し、ふだんの 暮らしにもどる。パリジャンたちの話題は、 もっぱら夏に過ごしたバカンスのこと。ワ イン片手に楽しむ人たちでビストロやカフ ェがにぎわう。パリで気軽に行けるカフェ を訪ねてみた。
Cafe Carlu パリで一番の観光スポット、エッフェル塔 の素晴らしい景色が一望のもとに見られ るシャイヨー宮の中にある 「Cafe Carlu」は ごくカジュアルなカフェテリア形式のカフ ェ。メニューはサンドイッチ類やパスタな ど軽いものがメインだが、歩きつかれたと きにひと休みするにはもってこいの穴場 である。 シャイヨー宮は1937年のパリ万国博のと きに建てられ、横に両翼を広げたような形 が優雅である。建物の中には現在、海洋博 物館、人類博物館、建築・文化財博物館、 シ ャイヨー劇場など文化的な館が入ってい る。 「Cafe C arlu」は正面入り口から入ってま っすぐのところにあり、大きなブロンズ像 やエッフェル塔をながめながら、なんとな く文化的雰囲気にひたることができるの がうれしい。博物館に入るにはそれぞれ入 場料金がいるが、 「Cafe Carlu」は入場料は 無料である。

During the summer, many restaurants and stores in Paris situated outside of the staple tourist hotspots are closed and things seem to become quieter. But when September comes, the typical liveliness returns and people are back to their usual lives. The topic of choice of the freshly returned Parisians revolves around their summer vacation. They fill the seats of bistros and cafés ; drinking wine. Inspired by this post-vacation tradition, I visited a café with the firm intent to relax.

In the Palais de Chaillot, you are offered a beautiful view of Paris’ #1 tourist spot, the Eiffel Tower. Café Carlu is situated in the Palais de Chaillot and its style is reminiscent of a very casual cafeteria. The main menu is oriented on light meals such as sandwiches and pastas ; which are ideal when one is tired from walking around, making it a best kept secret for those looking to take a break.
De l'intérieur du café Carlu, situé dans le palais de Chaillot, on a une magnifique vue du site touristique le plus couru de Paris, la Tour Eiffel. Convivial comme une cafétéria, ce café sert surtout une belle variété de sandwiches et de plats de pâtes. Pour prendre une pause après avoir longuement marché, le café Carlu est un de ces endroits peu connus mais pleins de charme.
The Palais de Chaillot was built for the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne (International Exposition dedicated to Art and Technology in Modern Life) in 1937. Its current layout, which is composed of two distinct pavilions and two distinct wings arranged in a curvilinear manner nestling a central space, is very graceful. The building currently houses cultural pavilions such as the musée de la Marine (Naval Museum), the musée de l’Homme (the Museum of Man), the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine (architecture museum) and the Théâtre National de Chaillot (the Chaillot National Theatre).
Le palais de Chaillot, construit en 1937 à l'occasion de l'Exposition internationale de Paris, impressionne par l'élégance de sa forme en ailes déployées. Il comporte en son sein plusieurs institutions culturelles telles que le Musée national de la Marine, le Musée de l'Homme, la Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine et le Théâtre national de Chaillot.
Café Carlu is situated straight ahead from the main entrance of the Palais de Chaillot. It’s nice to be able to soak up in the cultural atmosphere while overlooking the huge bronze statues and the Eiffel Tower. To enter the museums you need to pay the entrance fees ; but access to Café Carlu is free.
Le café Carlu est situé devant l'entrée du palais. Avec sa vue sur la Tour Eiffel et sur les extraordinaires statues de bronze de la place du Trocadéro, on prend plaisir à se délasser dans une ambiance culturelle. Toutefois, contrairement aux musées où il faut payer des frais d'admission, il n'y a rien à payer pour entrer dans le café Carlu.

Lorsque, durant l'été, plusieurs restaurants et magasins situés hors des secteurs touristiques ferment leurs portes temporairement, Paris semble plutôt désert. Cependant, dès le début du mois de septembre, les rues redeviennent animées et la vie reprend son cours. Les Parisiens ne parlent que de leurs vacances d'été et s'égayent dans quelque bistro ou café, une coupe de vin à la main. Je suis justement allé visiter un de ces cafés décontractés.
