Connecting the Dots by Train Article by Nick Gogarty English
Trains claim a big presence here. And like in a thunderstorm, their sound is sudden and jarring. The silence between them is actually ripe with tension, and we count the seconds of quiet to guess how far the next one is. It’s an ambient inhale and exhale that I’d liken to living by the ocean, though I never have. There’s also something so purely analogue about the massive system that spans the country; dusty workhorses like old record players, immutable, like they’ve been there forever, like it’s the landscape that bends for them when they go.

Trains have tunneled themselves into the collective conscious. People rely on them unquestionably, and poeticize them in personal ways. There are trainotaku here, fascinated with cataloguing and timekeeping. Filmmakers too have relied on them since the beginning as symbols of ephemerality and the unbreakable passage of time. In Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, the main character must first make order in the chaoses of adulthood and only when she finally discovers control and self-determination, does she board a train, mostly alone, to the last stop. Other film masters, like Ozu, and more recently Koreeda, have consistently relied on the Train motif in similar ways.

電車で点を繋ぐ 日本では電車の存在感が大きい。雷雨のように、電車の 音は突然で耳障りである。電車が到着する合間の沈黙 は、実は嵐の前の静けさであり、静けさの秒読みをして 次の電車がいつ来るかを予想する。それは、例えるなら、 波が寄せたり引いたりする音が聞こえるような、海の近く に住んでいる環境だ。実際に海の近くに住んだ事はない けれど・・・。国をまたがる巨大なレールシステムは何か 純粋でアナログ的な感じがある。例えば、埃まみれにな ってもきちんと動く古いレコードプレーヤーのような、そ こに永遠に存在していたかのような感じである。そんな、 地形が電車の行く道に姿を変えるという不変さがある。 電車では、集団意識の中にいる。人々は疑問無く電車に 依存している。そして、個々の方法でそれらに対して詩的 な気持ちを抱いている。 ここには、電車の車体や時刻表 に魅了された電車オタクと言われる人達が存在する。映 画製作者ですら、はかなさや変える事のできない時間の 経過のシンボルとして、昔から電車を利用してきた。宮 崎駿監督の「千と千尋の神隠し」では、主人公が大人に 成長する混乱の中、秩序を見いださなければならない。 そして最終的に、抑制力と自信の決意を発見した時に、 主人公は電車に乗り、殆ど乗客がいない中、最終駅に向 かう。小津安二郎監督や最近では是枝裕和監督のよう な巨匠達も、一貫して似たような技法で電車を用いてい る。
Indeed, they can’t be ignored. Having come from a country with a less than impressive rail system, my first few weeks living by the central station were a headache. Pleasant dreams were pounded into thin veils by the plodding ka-chunk-ka-chunk of local trains, or the cha-cha-chung-cha-cha-chung of the faster and heavier freights. Back then, I couldn’t imagine the lives of those whose houses stand even closer to the rails than mine. Out in the countryside, I imagined I could surely high-five someone with their arm out their kitchen window were I to pass them in a train. I still might try it one day… Trains are also links. They get us to work, yes, but they also take us home. Japanese, I think, have a fondness for the spaces between big cities, and a time when things were simpler. Trains support that, I feel, and carry us so seamlessly through the landscape. Through the windows, between big cities, civilizations seem to rise and fall as fast as a history lesson, connecting the spaces between us and collapsing time. Japanese have a strong sense of “Nation” and I think trains are integral to this (but as a reason or a result, I'm not sure). I haven't seen much of this stunning country yet but when I do it will be by train, connecting the dots, one station at a time.
実際に、電車の存在を無視する事はできない。鉄道シス テムの発展があまり進んでいないような国から来た私に とって、中央駅の近所に住んだ最初の数週間はとても苦 痛だった。楽しい夢は電車の単調なカチャンカチャンと いう音や、チャチャチャン・チャチャチャンという高速で 重低音の貨物車によりかき消された。当時は、私の家よ りもレール近くに建つ家に住んでる人達の生活を、想像 すらできなかった。電車で通り過ぎる家の台所の窓から 住人が手を出せば、電車の中の私とハイファイブすらで きるだろうと想像したりした。いつかは試してみようと思 う・・・。 電車はまた、繋がりでもある。我々を仕事先に送り出し、 また家に送り返す。 日本人は、私が思うに、大都市の空間 や、単純な物事や時間に愛着を持っているのだろう。電 車がその手助けをし、途切れなく我々を色々な土地に運 んでくれる。窓からは、大都市と大都市の間で、歴史の授 業のように文明が現れては消え、電車は我々の空間を繫 ぎ時間を崩壊する。 日本人は「民族」 としての強い意識が あり、電車は不可欠な物なのだと思う （それが理由として なのか、結果としてなのかは私には分からない）。 まだこの素晴らしい国を殆ど見てはいないが、その機会 ができた時は、電車での旅になるだろう。一駅づつ、点を 繋いで。

Les trains servent aussi de liens. Ils nous mènent non seulement au travail mais aussi à la maison. Je crois que les Japonais ont beaucoup d’affection pour les espaces entre les grandes villes et un temps où la vie était plus simple (ou comme on dirait chez nous, « d’antan » ). Les trains soutiennent cela, en nous emmenant à travers les paysages. À travers la fenêtre, entre les grandes villes, les civilisations ont l’air d’apparaître et de disparaître aussi rapidement que dans un cours d’histoire, reliant les espaces à travers le temps. Les Japonais ont un sens très développé de la nation et je crois que les trains en sont une partie intégrale à ceci. Je n’ai pas encore vu beaucoup de ce pays magnifique, mais quand je le ferai, ce sera par train, en reliant les points, une station à la fois.

Sous la brise d'automne ces fleurs rouges qu'elle aurait tant aimé arracher Ce haiku provient d'un célèbre auteur: Issa Kobayashi. Cela faisait un moment que je cherchais à mettre l'accent sur les artistes du Japon et j'ai finalement trouvé mon mois! En novembre se tient l'Issa Matsuri. Qui est Issa Kobayashi? Auteur de l'époque Edo, il fait partie des 4 grands maîtres de la poésie japonaise avec Bashou Matsuo, Buson Yosa et Masaoka Shiki. Il aurait aussi été nommé Yataro et provient de la préfecture Nagano. Ses origines sont humbles, fils de paysans et fermier lui-même, il deviendra par la suite moine bouddhiste autant qu'artiste. Bien qu'il ait vécu à Tokyo, sa vie est celle de l'oiseau voyageur, parfois solitaire mais toujours créative! Il est enterré sur le mont Komaru après avoir souffert de la maladie. Kobayashi est reconnu pour ses haiku,forme de poésie traditionnelle de 3 lignes de 5, 7 et 5 syllabes; Ne pas confondre avec le tanka qui a 5 lignes de 5,7,5,7 et 7 syllabes. Dans un haiku, le poète se doit d'exprimer une émotion profonde au travers d'une description simple de la nature. Que pensez-vous du haiku d'Issa

en début d'article? Pour ma part je n'arrive pas à le déchiffrer, j'hésite entre la passion d'un geste et la mélancolie d'un souvenir. Le Matsuri dédié à Issa se tiendra le samedi 23 novembre au temple Entenji de Tokyo. Un concert de koto, un concours de haiku ainsi que du daidogei (spectacle de rue) auront lieu; Les curieux pourront même prendre part à plusieurs cérémonies de thé gratuites. Quant au concours de haiku il est ouvert au grand public...en autant qu'il y ait un amour de la poésie! En découvrant Issa et le Matsuri qui lui est dédié je suis allée à la recherche de ses oeuvre que je recommande vivement comme lecture. Bien que le haiku n'ait pas existé dans la poésie classique française ou anglaise, je trouve les oeuvres d'Issa très accessibles. Parfois comiques, parfois mélancoliques, toujours éphémères.

Windy fall These are the scarlet flowers She liked to pick. This haiku is from the famous author Issa Kobayashi. I had been waiting for the right time to focus on Japanese artists and I finally found my month! In November the Issa Matsuri is held. Who is Issa Kobayashi? He is an author from the Edo era (1603-1867) and is one of the four great masters of Japanese poetry, along with Bashou Matsuo, Buson Yosa, and Masaoka Shiki. Issa was also named Yotaro and hailed from Nagano prefecture. His origins are humble: the son of a farmer and a farmer himself, he subsequently became a Buddhist monk and an artist. Although he lived in Tokyo, his life was that of a wanderer, oftentimes solitary but always creative! He is buried on Mount Komaru after having suffered from an illness.
小林一茶が何者かご存知ですか？江戸時代を代表す る俳人で、松尾芭蕉、与謝蕪村、正岡子規と並ぶ日本四 大俳諧師のうちの一人です。一茶は本名を弥太郎とい い、長野県に生まれました。貧しい農家の長男として生 まれ、自身も農民でしたが、後には、俳諧師であると同 時に仏教の僧侶にもなりました。江戸（現東京）に居を 構えましたが、人生のほとんどは流浪の身といってよ く、孤独な身の上でしたが常に創作への熱意に溢れて いました。晩年は病に苦しみ、死後、小丸山公園に埋葬 されました。 一茶の俳句（伝統的な三行の五、七、五の韻律からなる 定型詩）は、他を抜きん出ています。まちがいのないよ うに言っておくと、五行の五、七、五、七、七の韻律から 成る短歌とは別物です。俳句には、季語を含むことで、 心の中の奥深い場景を表現するという特徴がありま す。冒頭の一茶の俳句を詠んで、 どう思われましたか？ 私には、情熱的なしぐさと憂鬱な記憶の、二つの異な る場景を含むこの句を読み解くのはなかなか骨が折 れました。 東京の炎天寺では、11月23日に一茶まつりが開催され ます。琴の演奏のほか、俳句コンテストや大道芸も行わ れます。参加者は無料の茶会に参加することもできま す。俳句コンテストは、詩歌をこよなく愛する方なら誰 にでも広く、一般に開かれています。 一茶と彼を偲ぶ一茶まつりをもっとよく知るために、彼 の俳句の世界を探索しているうちに、私はすっかりそ の魅力の虜になってしまいました。皆様にも是非お勧 めします。英語やフランス語の古典詩と俳句は全く異 なるものですが、私にとって、一茶の作品はとても身近 に感じられます。その心は、時におかしく、時にせつな く、そして無常であること・・・。
Kobayashi is regarded for his haiku, a traditional form of poetry of three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables -- not to be confused with tanka, which has five lines of 5, 7, 5, 7, and 7 syllables. In a haiku the poet must express profound emotion through a simple description of nature. What do you think of Issa's haiku from the beginning of the article? I can’t quite put my finger on it: I hesitate between feeling a passionate gesture and a melancholic memory. The Matsuri dedicated to Issa will be held on November 23rd at the Entenji temple in Tokyo. A koto concert, a haiku contest, and a daidogei (street performance) will also be held. Those attending can even take part in several free tea ceremonies. As for the haiku contest, it is open to the public at large... so long as there is a love of poetry! In discovering Issa and his Matsuri I went on a search for more of his work which I now highly recommend. Even though haiku does not exist in classical French and English poetry, I find the works of Issa to be very accessible. Sometimes comical, sometimes melancholic, always ephemeral.

En effet, on ne peut pas les ignorer. Venant d’un pays où la voie ferrée n’est pas très impressionnante, mes premières semaines où j’ai vécu près d’une station centrale me donnaient des maux de tête. Les rêves agréables de la nuit se terminaient brusquement comme un coup de marteau par les bruits des trains locaux et des frets plus lourds. Je ne pouvais pas m’imaginer comment vivaient les gens dont les maisons se trouvaient encore plus proche des voies. Dans la campagne, je m’imaginais que je pouvais sûrement toper la main de quelqu’un qui sortait sa main par la fenêtre de la cuisine si je passais par train. Je devrais l’essayer un de ces jours…

Il faut avouer que les trains occupent une place importante dans la conscience collective des Japonais. Les gens se fient aux trains et les adornent en poésies personnelles. Il y a des train-otaku ici qui cataloguent et font du chronométrage par passion. Les cinématographes se sont servis d'eux dès le début comme des symboles de fugacité et du passage incassable du temps. Dans Le Voyage de Chihiro de Miyazaki, le personnage principal doit mettre de l’ordre dans le chaos de l’âge des adultes et ce n'est seulement que lorsqu’elle réussit à découvrir le contrôle de soi et la détermination qu’elle prend un train, presque seule, jusqu’au dernier arrêt. Les autres maîtres du cinéma, tel qu'Ozu et plus récemment Koreeda, se fient au motif du Train très souvent pour passer des messages similaires.

Les trains possèdent une très grande présence ici. Comme un orage, leurs bruits sont soudains et bruyants. Le silence entre chaque pause est rempli de tension, et on compte les secondes de vide pour essayer de deviner quand arrivera le prochain. C’est une ambiance qui doit ressembler à celle de vivre près de l’océan, du moins je le crois même si je ne l’ai jamais fait. Il y a aussi un élément purement analogique avec cet énorme système qui couvre le pays entier; des chevaux travailleurs poussiéreux comme des vieux lecteurs de disques, immuables comme s’ils avaient toujours été là et que le terrain se déplace pour eux où qu’ils vont.

山本兼一さんの直木賞受賞作品「利休にた ずねよ」が、市川海老蔵さん、中谷美紀さん など豪華キャストで映画化された。映画は 利休の切腹シーンから始まり、美を追究し た利休の生きざまとその原点となった悲恋 が描かれている。利休を陰ながら見守る妻・ 宗恩役で出演した女優の中谷美紀さんが、 作品の魅力を語ってくれた。 茶聖・利休の妻である宗恩役を頂いたとき のお気持ちを聞かせください。 以前からパリに行くことが多く、たくさんの 友人に出会いました。そこでよく日本文化に ついて訪ねられましたが、何も答えられずと ても恥ずかしく思えたんです。 自国の文化を 知りたいと、10年ほど前からお茶の稽古を はじめ、いずれはお茶にちなんだ作品に携 わってみたいと思っていました。山本兼一 先生が書かれた「利休にたずねよ」 というご 本を読んだ時に、いつか演じることができ たらいいなと思っていたところ、 この話をい ただきましたので、渡りに舟で二つ 返事で お受けしました。

この映画に込めた思いについて教えてくだ さい。 千利休が貫いた志を現代の日本のお客様 にお伝えすることが課せられた使命だと思 いました。 とりわけ震災後の復興が進んで いない中、 日本人としてのプライドを取り戻 すきっかけになればと思っていました。物理 的に失ったものに対しての喪失感というの は、おそらく400年前に比べたら大きいと思 うんですね。茶席で用いられる禅語に「本来 無一物」 という言葉がありますが、人間は本 来何も持っていなかったのだから、執着す るものは何一つないという意味だそうで、 そのことに気付くと、現状に対する嘆きや憤 りがずいぶんと楽になるのではないかと思 います。 海外の方に向けて、伝えられたらいいなと思 った点は何ですか？ この映画は、きわめて台詞が少なくて、非言 語コミュニケーションの割合が非常に多い 映画だと思います。海外のお客様からする と、その沈黙に耐えられないという方もいら っしゃるかもしれませんが、喜怒哀楽の全て をその沈黙の中に込めているので、そこを 感じ取ってもらえたら、もうこの映画は大成 功だなと思います。
今回の滞在中に茶道デモンストレーションを 開催されていましたが、外国の方にどう受け 入れられたと思いますか？ 本来なら沈黙に堪え難い人種の方々が、日 常の生活に比べればきわめて静かな、お茶 の言葉で言うと 「和敬静寂」 というものを共 有できたように思うんですね。それは本当 にお茶をやっていてよかったなと思えた瞬 間でした。 宗恩は日本人女性特有ともいえるような愛 情表現をしていたように思いました。 自分以外に想い人がいたというのは、悲し いですし残念なことではあります。でも、そ れも利休さんの人生であり、それをまるご と受け止める愛の深さが宗恩にはありまし た。それは仏のような迷いの無い清らかな 気持ちではなく、人間らしい強い感情があり ながらも、それをぐっとこらえた宗恩の神々 しさのようなもので、それが伝わったらいい なと思います。 お点前のシーンも大変だったかと思います が、いかがでしょうか？ 海老蔵さんは、各シーンでお点前の仕方を 変えていらっしゃいました。静かに覚悟の決 まったお顔でお茶を点てるときもあれば、 荒れ狂った獅子のごとく点てるお茶もあり。 一番大切なことは心であって形ではないと いうことを、海老蔵さんのお芝居からも学 ばせていただきました。 最優秀芸術貢献賞の受賞おめでとうござい ます。 ありがとうございます。千利休をはじめ、監 督や海老蔵さん、私もそうですが、狂おしい ほどに美に取り付かれた人々が携わった映 画です。きわめて美意識の高い田中監督が 撮られた作品で、 これは監督のためにある 賞ではないかなと思いました。 ＝＝＝＝＝ 美がテーマとなるこの作品に出演された中 谷さんが語る言葉やしぐさは、まさに日本 の美。そんな中谷さんから 「この映画を通し て日本文化を振り返り、誇りを持って国際社 会で活躍していただきたいです」 とココモ ン読者にメッセージをいただいた。何もな かった時代に立ち上がってきた日本人の強 さと、あの頃の美しい日本を改めて感じる ことのできる映画だった。日本では2013年
12月に公開が予定されている。日本だけで なく、世界でも上映されることを願うばかり である。
Français Gagnant du prix Naoki, le roman Le secret du maître de thé de Kenichi Yamamoto a récemment été porté au grand écran sous le titre Demande à Rikyu, film mettant en vedette Ebizo Ichikawa et Miki Nakatani, acteurs adroitement soutenus par une magnifique distribution. S’ouvrant sur les images du seppuku du protagoniste, Rikyu, ce film dépeint sa vie qu’il consacre à la recherche du beau ainsi que l’histoire d’amour tragique à l’origine de cette quête. L’actrice Miki Nakatani y tient le rôle de l’épouse de Rikyu, So-on, qui surveille toujours son mari d’un œil discret. Elle nous a parlé du film et de ce qui le rend captivant. Comment vous êtes-vous sentie lorsque vous avez décroché le rôle de Soon, la femme du maître de thé Rikyu? Depuis longtemps, je vais régulièrement à Paris où je me suis fait beaucoup d’amis. On me posait souvent des questions au sujet de la culture japonaise et le fait de ne pas être en mesure d’y répondre m’embarrassait. Il y a environ dix ans, en voulant en connaître davantage sur ma propre culture, j’ai commencé l’apprentissage de la cérémonie du thé et, de fil en aiguille, je me suis mise à souhaiter participer à un projet qui aurait à voir avec le thé. Alors que je lisais Le secret du maître de thé de Kenichi Yamamoto et que je me disais que j’aimerais bien un jour pouvoir jouer dans une adaptation du roman, cette chance inespérée m’a été offerte et c’est avec le plus grand bonheur que j’ai accepté. Quel a été votre apport personnel au film? Je me suis donné pour mission de faire connaître au public japonais contemporain l’idéal auquel Rikyu aspirait inlassablement. Tout particulièrement dans le contexte de la lente reconstruction qui a suivi le séisme de 2011, je me suis dit qu’il
serait extraordinaire que ce film puisse aider les Japonais à retrouver leur fierté perdue. C’est que j’ai l’impression que le sentiment de perte matérielle est plus fort aujourd’hui qu’il y a 400 ans. Comme le dit un proverbe zen que l’on utilise lors de la cérémonie du thé, « tout n’est fondamentalement que vide », autrement dit, puisqu’à l’origine nous ne possédons rien, il est futile de s’accrocher à quoi que ce soit. Je pense que le fait d’être conscient de cette vérité peut nous aider à soulager grandement la douleur et l’indignation que nous ressentons actuellement. Qu’aimeriez-vous étranger?

C’est un film dont le dialogue est extrêmement minimaliste et qui repose donc essentiellement sur le non-verbal. Il est peutêtre difficile pour le public international de tolérer un tel silence, mais il faut savoir que toute la gamme des émotions humaines s’y retrouve. Je pense donc que si les cinéphiles parviennent à ressentir ces émotions, le film est promis à un grand succès. On a présenté une cérémonie du thé lors de votre séjour ici. Comment pensez-vous que ce genre d’initiatives est accueilli par les publics étrangers? Ces cérémonies sont des moments manifestement plus calmes que nos vies quotidiennes, surtout si l’on est du genre à ne pas supporter le silence. Toutefois, je pense que nous avons pu entrer tous ensemble dans l’état que représente le mot japonais wakeiseijaku, un terme issu du vocabulaire du thé qui signifie harmonie, respect, pureté et tranquillité. C’est un moment qui m’a permis de réaliser combien heureuse j’étais d’avoir persévéré dans mon apprentissage de la cérémonie du thé. En regardant le film, j’ai eu l’impression que So-on exprimait son amour d’une manière propre aux Japonaises. Je trouve triste et malheureux le fait que Rikyu aime aussi quelqu’un d’autre, mais il est maître de sa vie. Quant à elle, So-on
arrive à tout accepter grâce à la profondeur de son amour pour Rikyu. Par contre, contrairement au Bouddha dont l’esprit est pur et sage, So-on connaît des émotions humaines très fortes. J’espère que je suis parvenue à transmettre par mon jeu la nature divine de So-on puisque c’est de là qu’elle tire sa grande force de résilience. Les scènes de cérémonie du thé semblent avoir été difficiles à tourner. Comment étaient-elles en réalité? Ebizo changeait sa manière d’effectuer la cérémonie du thé à chaque scène. S’il s’exécutait dans le calme et d’un regard assuré dans certains cas, il se comportait comme un lion déchaîné dans d’autres. Son jeu m’a permis de comprendre que le plus important n’est pas la forme, mais plutôt le cœur et l’esprit. Félicitions pour le Prix de la meilleure contribution artistique! Merci beaucoup! Tout comme le personnage de Rikyu dans l’histoire, le réalisateur, Ebizo et moi étions obsédés par la notion de beauté et nous nous sommes complètement investis dans le film. Mitsutoshi Tanaka, le réalisateur, possède un sens de l’esthétisme extrêmement développé et je pense qu’il mérite incontestablement ce prix. Les paroles et les gestes que présente Miki Nakatani dans ce film ayant pour thème central la beauté expriment parfaitement la notion japonaise du beau. L’actrice nous a envoyé un message à l’intention des lecteurs de Coco Montréal : « Je souhaite que ce film vous permette de renouer avec la culture japonaise et qu’il vous incite à agir fièrement sur la scène internationale. » En conclusion, soulignons que ce film nous permet de redécouvrir la beauté du Japon ainsi que la force des Japonais qui se sont levés à cette époque où ils ne possédaient rien sur le plan matériel. La sortie en salles est prévue pour décembre 2013 au Japon et il ne nous reste qu’à souhaiter que ce film soit également projeté sur les écrans du monde entier.
English Winner of the Naoki Prize, Kenichi Yamamoto’s novel, “Ask this of Rikyu,” was made into a film, starring the famous Ebizo Ichikawa and Miki Nakatani. The movie starts with a scene of seppuku and, with a story of tragic love as a starting point, illustrates Rikyu’s way of life and his search for beauty. I interviewed actress Miki Nakatani. She played the role of Rikyu’s wife, So-on, who quietly kept an eye on him from the side. She told us about the captivating aspects of the movie… Please describe how you felt when you got the role of So-on, wife of tea master Rikyu. I often go to Paris and have made a lot of friends there. I have often been asked about Japanese culture but was ashamed when I couldn't answer. Then, about 10 years ago, I started to learn about tea ceremonies to better understand my own culture, and I wanted to be involved in a movie about tea ceremonies. As I was reading “Ask this of Rikyu,” I was offered a role in this movie. I had been hoping, so I accepted it without a moment's hesitation. Please tell us how you put your thoughts into the movie.
Is there something you would like to tell overseas audiences?
A tea ceremony demonstration was held during your stay in Montreal.
I felt So-on expresses her love in a way that might be distinctive of a Japanese woman. It is sad and unfortunate that Rikyu loved someone else. But that was his life, and So-on loved him unconditionally and entirely. It was her divine essence that allowed her to endure. Although unlike the Buddha, who had a pure mind, she had strong human emotions. I hope I conveyed that to the audiences. The tea making scenes seem difficult. How were they? Ebizo changed his approach of making tea for each scene. In one scene, he performed a tea ceremony quietly with a determined face, while in another scene, he was like a mad lion. I learned from his performance that the most important thing is not the form but the heart and mind. Congratulations on winning the Best Artistic Contribution award! Thank you very much. Rikyu, the director, Ebizo, and me (all of us obsessed with beauty) were involved in this movie. This film was made by director Tanaka who has a remarkable sense of aesthetics. I thought he deserved this award. ===== The words and gestures of the actress in this movie (whose core theme is beauty) represent true Japanese beauty. We received a message from her for Coco Montreal readers. “I hope this film will allow you to reconnect with the Japanese culture and it makes you proud to play an active part in the international community.” This movie gives us a new appreciation of how beautiful Japan was during this time period and how strong the Japanese people were who rose up at a time when, materially, we didn’t have anything. It will be released in theatres in December 2013 in Japan. I hope it will be on screens all over the world.

Les murs et le magasin lui-même sont remplis à ras bord de matériaux nécessaires pour tricoter la laine, la dentelle, les broderies, etc. On pourrait même dire que les propriétaires et leur personnel « tricotent » en fait un bel et coloré espace. Tous les matériaux sont attentivement sélectionnés, et comprennent principalement des produits fabriqués localement au Canada. Mais une question demeure : pourquoi faire découvrir ce magasin dans la section « Bon Appétit »? C'est qu'un magasin exceptionnel, Salon de thé, se trouve juste à côté de La Maison Tricotée! La propriétaire, Mme Céline Barbeau, se rend au marché tous les matins pour sélectionner des ingrédients frais. Une fois le menu du jour établi, elle consacre son temps dans la cuisine à la gastronomie simple afin de faire ressortir les parfums des ingrédients. Les desserts, comprenant un mélange de macarons et de gâteaux de la pâtisserie Rhubarbe, ont figuré auparavant dans la section « Bon Appétit! », et une variété de thé fournie par Thé C. G., entreprise locale à Montréal, offrira certainement un moment de félicité! Le mélange que Nico a choisi était un scone à la rhubarbe accompagné d’un thé aromatisé appelé « Y'a d'la joie – état joyeux ». La surface du scone était croustillante et légèrement parfumée, alors que le contenu était doux et merveilleusement équilibré. Quant au thé, il était riche en saveur; avec rose et fraise en avant-garde, et servait son rôle d’accompagnement parfaitement. Si par hasard vous passez devant le magasin et que vous y jetez un coup d'œil à l'intérieur, vous apercevrez sans aucun doute des enfants se combler la bouche de délicieux gâteaux et des aficionados du tricot absorbés par leur art; pelotonnés dans un sofa; et des rires pleins d'entrain émaner de la classe de tricot. Winter will soon arrive in Montreal. However, Nico, who does not thrive in the cold weather, discovered a hiding place where she can warm up for the whole season; body and soul! I would like to introduce to you La Maison Tricotée; a store that opened its doors in September of this year! The name “La Maison Tricotée” means knitted house, which is a more than appropriate name for knitting store. The walls and the store itself are packed to the brim with all the materials necessary for knitting wool, lace, embroideries, etc. One could also say that the owners and staff are in fact “knitting” a beautiful and colored space. All the materials are carefully selected, and mainly consist of products made locally in Canada. But one question remains: why am I introducing this shop in the Bon Appétit! section? The reason is that a wonderful shop, Salon de thé, is located right beside La Maison Tricotée! The owner, Ms. Céline Barbeau, goes to the market and selects fresh ingredients every morning. After the daily menu has been drawn up, she devotes her time in the kitchen to the art of simple cooking in order to bring out the flavours of the ingredients. The deserts, consisting of a combination of macarons and cakes from pâtisserie Rhubarbe, which have starred in the Bon Appétit! section in
The combination Nico chose was a rhubarb themed scone accompanied by a flavoured tea called “Y’a d’la joie – joyful state”. The surface of the scone was crunchy and light in flavour, while the content was soft and beautifully balanced. As for the tea, it was rich in flavour; with rose and strawberry at the forefront, and served its accompanying role perfectly. Drinking tea with an antique cup & saucer decorated with small flower patterns not only makes for an elegant setting, but also helps raising the spirit. Céline-san, who arrived from France 7 years ago, is famous in the knitting field and has published a knitting book. She dreamt of creating a poetic and warm place where people would gather to knit and have tea. La Maison Tricotée made Céline-san’s dream come to life. If you happen to pass by and gaze into the shop, you will undoubtedly catch sight of children stuffing their mouth with delicious cakes and of knitting-aficionados absorbed in their craft; nestled comfortably in a sofa; lively laughs emanating from the knitting class. It is indeed the kind of place for people to come and become more closely knit.

There are very few lines in the script and a great percentage of non-verbal communication in this movie. It might be difficult for international audiences to bear the silence, but if they can capture the emotions infused in the silence, this movie would be a great success.
I think we were able to experience the tea ceremony term wakeiseijaku, which stands for harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. It is much quieter compared to everyday life, especially for those who normally might not be used to silence. It was a rewarding feeling, the fact that I have continued learning tea ceremony.

I thought it was my mission to tell modern Japanese audiences about Rikyu's aspirations. Especially with the prolonged reconstruction following the earthquake, I thought it would be nice if this movie could help Japanese people regain their pride. I think the sense of physical loss is probably bigger now compared with 400 years ago. There is a Zen saying used in tea ceremonies: ”All things are essentially nothingness.” It means there is nothing to cling to because we didn’t have anything originally. So if we are aware of it, I think it might lighten our grief or resentment of the present situation.

Kento is the son of the leader of a previously failed space mission, and is thus determined to succeed. However, Hayabusa’s mission to collect samples from the asteroid Itokawa and its return to Earth come up against unexpected difficulties. English BurlesGeek is the first troupe in Montreal dedicated to geek themed burlesque shows. All of the acts presented are inspired by movies, videos games, comics or TV shows. As a Japanese person growing up with geek culture; otherwise known as OTAKU culture, I was curious about this show. So I interviewed Lulu Les Belles Mirettes, the organizer of BurlesGeek. Lulu what inspired you to organize this unique event? I started this event because I like burlesque and Pop culture. Several cities already have their own Nerdlesque troupe, but Montreal didn’t. Although the geek culture is very much alive in Montreal. We figured people would like the concept. What makes a BurlesGeek show unique? It is the atmosphere. We tried to make the show comedy oriented and dynamic. I don't think the ont un profond intérêt pour les jeux vidéo et l’animation japonaise, par exemple. Tout le programme du spectacle s’inspire de l’univers des films, des jeux vidéo, des mangas et des séries télé. En tant que journaliste japonaise dont l’enfance a été teintée de culture otaku, je n’avais aucune raison de ne pas m’intéresser à cet événement! C’est pourquoi j’ai interviewé Lulu les belles mirettes, qui en est l’organisatrice. Lulu, pourquoi avez-vous eu envie d’organiser cet événement? J’ai eu envie de créer ce spectacle à cause de mon intérêt pour le burlesque et la culture populaire. Différents événements mélangeant la culture otaku et le burlesque existaient et attiraient déjà les foules dans plusieurs villes, mais rien du genre n’était présenté à Montréal, où l’engouement pour la culture otaku est pourtant bien présent. Je me suis donc dit que tout le monde ici aimerait ce genre de spectacle (rire). Qu’est-ce qui distingue cet événement des autres? Son atmosphère. Il est dirigé en insistant sur la comédie et le dynamisme. Je ne crois pas que les gens viennent voir notre spectacle dans l’espoir d’assister à un programme extravagant d’éventails à plumes; je

Also we use a projection screen to show videos while people are waiting for the show to start or during the acts for maximum entertainment. What is the audience like? People are usually quite young, in their twenties and thirties. The audience is a mix, as it appeals to both woman from the sexy side of burlesque and men who like to see their favorite geek character come to life. What message do you have for Coco Montreal's readers. To everyone that has never attended a BurlesGeek show, please come by all means! It is a fun show, full of all of your favorite childhood movies and video game characters. Heroes and boobs is our motto, so you obviously won’t be disappointed! Next show will be held on January18th 2014 at Sala rossa. crois qu’ils ont plutôt envie de voir des filles qui bondissent en occupant tous l’espace sur scène au son d’une musique électro des années 80. Nous présentons aussi un court métrage pendant l’entracte pour offrir un maximum de divertissement. Selon vous, qui est le public du spectacle? Il y a beaucoup de jeunes dans la vingtaine et la trentaine, des femmes comme des hommes, qu’ils soient attirés par l’aspect sexy du burlesque ou par des personnages de l’univers otaku qu’ils aiment et qui occupent une grande place dans leur vie. Je dirais que le spectacle s’adresse à un public très vaste. Pouvez-vous adresser quelques mots aux lecteurs de Coco Montréal? J’aimerais inviter tous ceux qui n’ont jamais vu BurlesGeek à y assister! C’est un spectacle débordant des personnages de jeux vidéo et de films qui ont peuplé notre enfance. 作り方 1. 赤豆は手洗いする。※時間があれば、数時間 漬けておくとよい。 2. 鍋に赤豆を入れて、豆がかぶるくらいの水を 入れて強火にかける。沸騰したら、差し水をして 5分ほど煮て、 ざるにあげる。 3. 再度、赤豆を鍋に入れてたっぷりめの水を注 ぎ入れフタをし、弱めの中火で20分ほど茹で る。茹であがったら、煮汁と豆に分ける。 4. もち米を洗い、 ざるに上げる。 5. もち米と豆、皮をむいて一口大に切ったさつ まいも、豆の煮汁と水（足して750cc）、ひとつま みの塩を炊飯器に入れて、軽くかき混ぜたら炊 飯モードで米を炊く。 6. 炊飯できたら、黒ごまをトッピングしてでき あがり。

Shichi-Go-San, held annually on November 15, is a festival to celebrate children -- specifically, boys who are reaching the age of three or five, and girls who are turning seven. In the past, people used to go to shrines (this was called miya-mairi) to express gratitude for their children’s well being, or to pray for children’s healthy growth. Nowadays, however, many people choose to rent kimonos for children and take commemorative photos at a photo studio, followed by a congratulatory meal. For our recipe this time, we will make sekihan (or red rice), a crucial item for the celebration. Why don’t you combine it with sweet potato to represent the taste of autumn!?
Osekihan with sweet potato Ingredients (4 Servings) ¼ cup
Red beans
3 go (540cc)
Mochi (sticky) rice
1 medium size Sweet potato 50~80cc
Red beans broth
750cc
Water
Proper quantity Salt, black sesame seeds
Haricots rouges
3 go (540 cc) Riz mochi (collant) 1
Patate douce (taille moyenne)
50-80cc Bouillon de haricot rouge (eau de cuisson) 750cc

Préparation 1. Laver les haricots rouges. Si possible, il est préférable de les laisser submerger dans l'eau quelques heures avant de commencer. 2. Couvrir d'eau les haricots rouges et amener à ébullition à feu vif. Lorsque l'eau bouille, ajouter un peu d'eau et poursuivre la cuisson pendant 5 minutes. Égoutter les haricots. 3. Remettre les haricots dans une casserole et ajouter assez d'eau pour faire bouillir à couvert pendant environ 20 minutes à feu doux-moyen. Réserver les haricots et conserver l'eau de cuisson. 4. Laver le riz et l'égoutter. 5. Intégrer le riz, les haricots rouges, la patate douce épluchée et coupée en dés, le bouillon de haricots rouges (eau de cuisson) et l'eau (750cc) dans un autocuiseur à riz. Ajouter une pincée de sel, mélanger délicatement et initier la cuisson. 6. Lorsque la cuisson est terminée, saupoudrer de graines de sésame noires et servir.
Preparation 1. Wash red beans by hand. *If you have time, soak them in water for a few hours. 2. Put the red beans in a pot, add water enough to cover the beans, and cook over a strong fire. When boiled, add water and cook for approx. 5 minutes. Drain water in a bamboo basket. 3. Again put the read beans in a pot, pour plenty of water and cover it. Cook just below medium heat about 20 min. When cooked, separate the beans from the broth. 4. Wash mochigome (sticky rice) and drain water in a bamboo basket. 5. Put mochigome, the beans, sweet potato (peeled and cut into bite-size pieces), the beans’ broth and water (about 750cc all together) and a pinch of salt into the rice cooker. Softly mix them, and then cook the mixture using the cooking rice mode of your rice cooker. 6. When cooked, add black sesame seeds on top of the dish to complete.

11月15日に行われる七五三は、七歳は女の子、五 歳は男の子、三歳は男の子と女の子の成長を祝う 行事です。かつて七五三には、子どもが無事に育っ たことのお礼や、健やかに成長することを願って神 社や氏神にお参りに行く“宮参り”が行われました が、現在では写真スタジオで仮衣装を着て、記念写 真を撮り、お祝いの食事をするというスタイルが増 えているようです。今回は、子どもの成長を祝って、 お祝いの席にかかせない赤飯を作ります。秋の味 覚、 さつまいもも一緒に召し上がれ！
est une fête qui a lieu au Japon vers le 15 novembre pour célébrer la croissance des enfants, plus particulièrement ceux de 3 ans, les garçons de 5 ans et les filles de 7 ans. Auparavant, les parents accomplissaient le Miyamairi, une visite à un temple ou au sanctuaire familial pour remercier les dieux de la bonne santé de leur enfant ou leur demander de veiller à sa croissance. Cependant, cette tradition tend à être remplacée par une visite au studio pour prendre une photographie commémorative de l'enfant costumé en kimono suivi d'un repas de fête où on ne peut se passer du sekihan, le fameux riz au fèves rouges! Voyons comment faire ce mets traditionnel, mais en y ajoutant un peu de patate douce pour y donner un petit goût d'automne.

（１） イエローナイフ （ノースウエスト準州） 日本からカナダのオーロラ鑑賞で最も有名なのは、 ノ ースウエスト準州（NWT）のイエローナイフ（Yellowknife）。筆者は昨年９月に「オーロラ・ビレッジ」 という オーロラ鑑賞施設のツアーに参加して、夏オーロラを 初体験しました。湖を囲む施設では、逆さオーロラが 見られる確率が高く、人気の的です。また、秋シーズン にはこの地域の特徴である黄葉風景や、野生のバファ ローを探すツアーも行われています。 （２） ドーソン・シティー（ユーコン準州） バンクーバーから飛行機を乗り継いで約３時間、北極 圏に近づく 「ゴールドラッシュ」の街、ユーコン準州ド ーソン・シティー（Dawson City）。手つかずの雄大な 自然風景が最大の特徴。今年８月の末にカナダ観光 局／ユーコン準州観光局主催のツアーに参加した折 には、ダウンタウンからわずか20分ほど、ユーコン川 を見下ろす山の上から360度を見渡す絶景のなか、見 事なオーロラが夜空を舞いました。ドーソン・シティー から1時間半のドライブで到着する「トゥームストーン 準州立公園」 では、８月下旬～９月初旬だけに見られる 「ツンドラ紅葉」も、真っ盛りの時期に遭遇。永久凍土 に覆われた地表に生える低木や草が秋のこの時期に だけ美しく紅葉する珍しい風景も、 この地域の観光の ハイライトです。 （３）ホワイトホース （ユーコン準州） バンクーバーから飛行機で約２時間のユーコン州ホ ワイトホース（Whitehorse）。オーロラが出ていない時 には、屋内で暖を取ることができる施設や、ロッジから オーロラが鑑賞できる宿泊施設などが登場していま す。 夏／秋オーロラの特徴は、満天の星空も一緒に楽しめ ること。近年、夏の夜空を照らす天の川も、なかなか見

La saison des aurores boréales au Canada a déjà commencé ! Yukon et les Territoires du Nord-Ouest On pense que les aurores boréales ne peuvent se voir qu’en hiver mais en fait, la saison débute plus tôt ; il semble qu’il y ait peu de gens qui savent qu’elles apparaissent déjà dans le ciel à la fin d’août, lorsque le soleil se couche plus tôt. Les aurores sont plus susceptibles de se montrer au Yukon et dans les territoires du Nord-Ouest, puisqu’ils sont situés directement en-dessous de la zone appelée « la ceinture des aurores boréales ». Cette année également, on peut déjà apercevoir de magnifiques aurores boréales à couper le souffle. A la fin du mois d’août jusqu’au début octobre, il fait environ 15 degrés en journée dans toutes les régions et il est rare que la température passe en-dessous de 0, même dans la nuit. Il suffit donc d’apporter un bon manteau pour se protéger du froid. Les rivières et les lacs, avant qu’ils ne gèlent en hiver, reflètent les aurores sur leur surface, et c’est seulement à
ce moment que l’on peut observer les « aurores boréales à l’envers ». (1) Yellowknife (Territoires du Nord-Ouest) Le plus célèbre point d’observation d’aurores au Canada pour les Japonais est la région de Yellowknife de territoires du Nord-Ouest. J’ai participé à un circuit à Aurora Village en Septembre l'année dernière : c’était la première fois que j’allais observer des aurores boréales en été. Les installations entourant le lac, et la forte probabilité d’observer des « aurores boréales à l’envers », rendent cet endroit très populaire. En outre, pendant l’automne, il y a des circuits propres à la région, pour apprécier les paysages de feuilles jaunies ou pour traquer le buffle sauvage. (2) Dawson City (Yukon) A 3 heures de vol à partir de Vancouver, on peut se rendre dans la ville de la « Ruée vers l’or » (proche du Cercle arctique), Dawson City, caractérisée par ses magnifiques sites naturels. J’ai eu l'occasion de la visiter grâce au circuit organisé par le Bureau de la Commission canadienne du tourisme / Tourisme Yukon à la fin du mois d’août de cette année. A environ 20 minutes du centre-ville, au sommet d'une montagne qui surplombe la rivière Yukon et qui donne une vue d’ensemble sur le paysage, on pouvait observer une superbe aurore illuminant le ciel nocturne. Au Parc Territorial de Tombstone, (1h30 en voiture de Dawson City), on peut également contempler la toundra en pleine floraison, à la fin du mois
Canada's Northern Lights: Viewing season has already started in the Northwest Territories and Yukon! English
People assume that the Northern Lights only show up in the winter. But actually the season starts earlier. Not so many people know that when the sun starts to set earlier (at the end of August), the Northern Lights are already dancing in the the Northwest Territories and Yukon skies. They appear often just under the area called the “belt of aurora.” Actually, the Northern Lights have already made an appearance this year. Temperatures in these regions between late August and the early October are around 15 degrees Celsius during the day and rarely go under 0 degrees Celsius at night. So the Japanese mid-winter outfit is warm enough for these times. Rivers and lakes are not frozen during this season, so when the Northern Lights appear, they reflect on the surface and you can see their “inverted image.” 1 : Yellowknife (Northwest Territories) For Japanese people, the most famous place for aurora viewing in Canada is Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. I experienced summertime Northern Lights for the first time in September of last year with a tour of “Aurora Village,” the aurora viewing facility. It is located next to a lake,

Qu’importe la région, vous pouvez admirer des aurores boréales, de la fin du mois d’août jusqu’au début d’avril de l'année prochaine. À ceux qui n’ont jamais eu la chance d'en voir, ne pensez-vous pas que c’est l’occasion ? A cause du transport et des conditions météorologiques, ce n’est pas facile d’aller voir les aurores polaires tout seul, je vous recommande plutôt l’achat d’un circuit organisé par une agence de voyage.

We went to the top of a mountain, just 20 minutes from downtown. We had a beautiful panoramic view filled with the beautiful Northern Lights in the night sky and the Yukon river below. We also went to Tombstone Territorial Park, located one and a half hours by car from Dawson City. It was the peak of the tundra foliage season (which lasts from late August to early September). This rare scenery of beautiful foliage, shrubs, and grasses on the permafrost soil is the highlight of this region's tourism. 3 : Whitehorse (Yukon) Whitehorse is about two hours away by plane from Vancouver. In Whitehorse, they offer facilities where you can keep warm inside when there are no Northern Lights to be seen, as well as accommodations where you can watch the lights from the inside. It is great to see the Northern Lights in both summer and fall because you can enjoy the lights and the star-filled sky at the same time. Recently, it has become harder to see the Milky Way in the summer night sky, but I could see it and the Northern Lights dancing just above the horizon the other day. You can go and watch the Northern Lights between late August and early April at any facility in these areas. If you have never seen auroras in Canada, why don't you give it a try this season? Note: Because the transportation, climate, and conditions of these areas make it a difficult journey, I recommend that you purchase a package tour from a travel agency.

People of all ages are invited to celebrate the Holiday season on Sainte-Catherine Street West for the 61st edition of the Santa Claus Parade, the biggest Christmas event in Quebec. A long-standing tradition and a must-see showcase of countless delights, Santa’s parade brings hundreds of thousands of people to downtown Montreal. With many festive scenes, some 20 floats and all kinds of entertainment, plenty of music, singing and dancing and over 1000 characters, the Parade promises many magical moments.

This is a holiday observed throughout Canada except in Ontario and Vancouver also known as Poppy Day, Armistice Day or Veteran’s Day. It takes place on November 11th in order to commemorate those members of the armed forces as well as civilians who have sacrificed their lives at war. The first Remembrance Day was celebrated on Monday Nov 11th in 1918 to recall the end of the World War. In fact, the war ended the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour with an armistice signed by the Germans.
