Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada

Welcome to the April2016 Recreation & Culture Guide Wow, spring already! What an exciting few months we have ahead of us, particularly in the way of recreation and leisure. As temperatures rise, so do the wide range of activities we can enjoy. City parks are a great place to be active and have fun with your family. Did you know Lethbridge has more maintained park space than any other city in Canada? We have fantastic playground equipment and sports fields that will soon be full of happy, active residents. If you’re curious about what’s out there, you’re in the right place. The Recreation & Culture Guide is your key to all things happening in Lethbridge. Find clubs, leagues, teams, events and classes so you can start painting, running, biking, swimming, learning and exploring - all thanks to the information found on the pages of the City’s Recreation & Culture Guide. Phew! There really is something for everyone, regardless of your age or ability. Big things are coming our way as we prepare to reopen Henderson Outdoor Pool and start gearing up to introduce you to the first phase of Crossings Leisure Complex. Stay tuned for more information on these exciting new facilities. All of these planned activities and events are great but don’t forget about nature. The beauty of our City really shines through this time of year and I encourage you to take it all in. I hope to see you on the trails and at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre in the coming months. Some other jewels of our city include the Alexander Galt Museum, Fort Whoop-Up and Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens. If you haven’t visited these wonderful places for some time, it’s worth the effort to go and see what has changed. Of course we can also enjoy activities in our downtown which will be home to 21 festivals this year, more than any previous year. There is the Southern Alberta Art Gallery and CASA to check out to see what’s happening on the Lethbridge art scene. We have a wonderful city with much to offer. Whatever you choose, I hope you and your family find a fun adventure this spring.

Chris Spearman Mayor, City of Lethbridge

ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Swim Kids Lessons 7 - 10 at Nicholas Sheran Pool Nicholas Sheran Pool: Now offering a Modified Red Cross Swim Kids 7-10 Program. How does the modified program work compared to the regular Red Cross Swim Kids program? In the past, Nicholas Sheran Pool has been unable to offer the Red Cross 7-10 swim program due to the pool depth. In the regular Swim Kids Program there is diving and a variety of other entries that prohibited us from running a safe program. How ever to meet the needs of our community, we have worked with the Red Cross to modify the program by taking all Diving and related entries out of the criteria while continuing to maintain the safety aspects of those skills. This allows us to offer a safe program and meet the needs of our growing community at the same time. How will this effect your child if he/she needs to continue lessons with a regular swim program? Because the Red Cross swim program is a continuous evaluation of criteria, through out all levels, all you would need to do is communicate with your child's instructor that they took a modified swim level and what was omitted and that Instructor would then review/teach the skill to your child. What can we do to ensure your child still understands the safety of diving and related entries? We may not be able to teach the skill in the pool but will ensure that he/she understands the safety and has the knowledge of those entries. Further questions or concerns can be directed to the facility manager at Nicholas Sheran pool. 403-320-3047

100 Years of Women and the Vote in Alberta “The women of Alberta have the honour of having to their credit the first act passed in the present session of the Legislative Assembly this afternoon, and now but, awaits the assent of the Lieutenant-Governor to become a statute. The 7 March 1916 Lethbridge Herald shared that the equal suffrage measure had pass the Alberta Legislature giving Alberta women the right to vote in provincial elections. On April 19 the bill became law making Alberta the third province (after Manitoba and Saskatchewan) to pass equal suffrage. In 1917 the first two women elected to a Legislature anywhere in the British Empire were in Alberta. They were Louise McKinney of Claresholm and Roberta MacAdams, a member of the Canadian Army Medical Corps. McKinney has the distinction of being the first woman declared elected because the overseas voting was completed after the inprovince election.

In 1918 changes were also made so that women in all municipalities in Alberta could vote at the municipal level. The first two women elected in Lethbridge were Mary McClenaghan and Susie Bawden who were elected to the Lethbridge Public School Board in 1924.

Mental Health Promotion Committee presents…

Dr. Mark Ragins

May 12, 2016 | Lethbridge Coast Hotel Workshop 9am-4pm, $100 pre-register (doors open at 8am, lunch & refreshments provided)

The Recovery Model: Vision and Substance Throughout this workshop, Dr. Ragins will discuss:  Different conceptual models of recovery and how they apply to working with people with severe mental illnesses  How the three core recovery transformations (from illness centered to person centered, from professionally-driven to client-driven collaboration, and from deficit-based to strengths-based building resilience) impact how we see our clients and our treatment plans  Break down the process of recovery into three stages that people go through as they move from a river of suffering to reintegration into the community (engagement, rebuilding, and arriving), along three dimensions (personal, relationships, and roles)  How to track people’s progress in recovery and use specifically targeted person-centered interventions to promote their recovery  How recovery-based programs and a comprehensive recovery-based system of care can be developed.

Please pre-register online for the full day workshop | Open February 1, 2016 | Limited seating available https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/the-recovery-model-vision-and-substance-by-dr-mark-ragins-tickets-19688872949

Yellowbells Did you know?

   

 

The yellowbells pictured above were photographed in Lethbridge’s Six Mile Coulee on March 11, 2016—almost a full month ahead of schedule! Often found in dry coulee areas, yellowbells are only found in southwestern Alberta and are a welcome sight in the spring landscape. As these flowers age they will change colour from yellow to orange to red—making them a treat every time you pass them by on your coulee adventures.

Did You Know?

As with any wildflower it is best to enjoy it in place—do not try to transplant it into your garden!! Even the most cautious gardeners have difficulty in successfully transplanting wildflowers and most end up dead thereby reducing wild populations drastically.

28

Rather, enjoy all the wildflowers that Lethbridge coulees have to offer by leaving them in place for others to enjoy after you! Add wildflowers to your garden by visiting a local garden centre to get seeds, bulbs, and good advice. Explore our events calendar for a list of upcoming speakers and field trips at www.NatureLethbridge.ca

Fritillaria pudica, known as yellowbells are part of the Lily family Yellowbells are among the first blooms of the spring season! Usually flowers in Lethbridge coulees mid-April to mid-May A small plant approx. 35cm tall Nodding flowers have 6 yellow petal–like sepals called tepals with a purple ring at the base Leaves are strap-shaped and blue-green in colour Of the 50 species of Fritillaria found in the Northern Hemisphere only yellowbells are found in Alberta! The starchy roots and bulbs are a good food source for ground squirrels and pocket gophers.
