ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Water Treatment Do you use chlorine or salt in your pool?
The nature of this question refers to the disinfection system used to rid the water of micro-organisms and contaminents thus keeping the water safe to swim in. The person asking this question is under the impression that salt is a form of disinfection however the fact is that all pools in Alberta use chlorine as the disinfecting agent to keep the water clean. Salt systems are one of the ways of generating the chlorine needed for disinfection. Other ways to generate chlorine include gas chlorine, liquid chlorine and dry chlorine puck systems. Facilities may supplement the chlorination system with other forms of disinfection such as ozone and UV systems but the primary system is chlorine. In Lethbridge Fritz, Nicholas and Siwik pools use dry chlorine puck systems and Henderson uses gas chlorine along with UV on the Spray Park. In addition to disinfection systems every pool must have a filtration system which the water flows through. There are 3 types of filters - Sand, Cartridge and open & closed Diatomaceous Earth (DE for short). The most commonly used is the sand filter (These can be found at Nicholas Sheran, Fritz Sick and Stan Siwik Pools. The new Henderson Pool uses a closed DE system and a substitute for DE called Perlite). Essentially these filtration systems allow water to flow through them while trapping dirt, foreign material etc. As the filter traps more of these materials the pressure will build up and eventually the system has to be “backwashed” which essentially cleans the filters so they can be put back into use again. In order to ensure that the water quality is good at each of the facilities regular water tests are done - approximately 4x per day. Water samples are also sent weekly to the Health Department for more stringent testing. All of the systems in place are constantly monitored and adjusted as necessary so that the water is safe. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make the pools a safe place to play.

Van Horne Colony As early as 1916 discussions were held as to what to do for returning First World War veterans. The CPR, not believing the government was finding jobs and land for returning soldiers quickly enough, decided on Veterans Colonies where veterans would be assisted to become farmers. A veterans’ colony, called the Van Horne Colony, was set up north of Coaldale. At the Van Horne Colony, twenty-five farmers were set up each with a quarter section of irrigated land, with some of the land already cultivated. Each farm was supplied with a two-bedroom house, barn with lean-to and cistern. A Central Control Farm existed to support the farmers and help them learn how to farm as well as how to irrigate properly Each colonist had to pay a small down payment and signed a loan for the rest at eight percent interest compounded. The colony was not a success. Though it started around 1919, it was already deserted by the mid 1920s (to be resold to Mennonite farmers moving into the area in the late 1920s). The colony failed for many reasons including the drought of the early 1920s and that some of the
original settlers had not been farmers so found the transition difficult. Many of the men moved into the cities and towns to take on their pre-war occupations. So, who were the men? P. Onyfrychuk, H.N. Warren, A.M. McLeod, M.H. Irvine, A. Connelly, George Bathgate, E.J. Holberton, D. Melville, A.L. Dale, A. Woolley, A.W. Key, A., Orr, Alex Robertson, S.H. Smith, Charlie Long, E. Bollards, Wm. Stitt, J. Newbold, G.E. Smith, R.G. Wilson, W. Granfield and Peter Robertson.

While public art has always been an integral part of our community, there has been a surge of interest by locals who are playing the game. Want to find all the public art in the city? Pick-up a free Public Art Walking tour map available at Casa and the AAC office.

Mental Health Promotion Committee presents…
Dr. Mark Ragins
October 27, 2016 | Lethbridge Coast Hotel Workshop 9am-4pm, $100 pre-register (doors open at 8am, lunch & refreshments provided)
The Recovery Model: Vision and Substance Throughout this workshop, Dr. Ragins will discuss: Different conceptual models of recovery and how they apply to working with people with severe mental illnesses How the three core recovery transformations (from illness centered to person centered, from professionally-driven to clientdriven collaboration, and from deficit-based to strengths-based building resilience) impact how we see our clients and our treatment plans Break down the process of recovery into three stages that people go through as they move from a river of suffering to reintegration into the community (engagement, rebuilding, and arriving), along three dimensions (personal, relationships, and roles) How to track people’s progress in recovery and use specifically targeted person-centered interventions to promote their recovery How recovery-based programs and a comprehensive recovery-based system of care can be developed.

Common in Lethbridge from May to August
Habitat: open areas with willow and birch shrubs, agricultural areas, and riparian regions
Feeding: fly catches aerial insects and will occasionally eat berries
Call is a quick, loud, chattering kit-kit-kitter-kitter
Rarely walk or hop on the ground—prefers to fly
Latin name is tyrannus tryannus perhaps to indicate the bird’s tyrannical behaviour
As you walk along the forest edge near the overgrown fields in midsummer you may notice an agile bird flittering about. It may look like this bird is wearing a business suit, Will defend its territory by pursuing, pecking, and with the characteristic black above and white below with plucking until the threat is white tipped-tail. This bird means business so take pause gone and enjoy the display. The Eastern Kingbird is common in Lethbridge from May to August. Named for the red crown that

Active Communities - A place to live, Work, and Play A strong sense of community benefits individuals, communities and society as a whole. Physical activity can play a powerful role in fostering stronger communities as it is one of the few opportunities we have to interact with others in our neighbourhoods. Simply saying hello to fellow dog walkers or inviting others to join your baseball game at the park can create new connections and lead to community cohesiveness. We can also be more intentional in creating opportunities to connect, whether it is a regular weekly walk with neighbours or an organized club or program, the benefits of even a few minutes of social interaction and physical activity are long lasting and increase the pride and enjoyment we feel for our community. Municipal planners are working to design spaces that foster activity and interaction, but individuals can also help encouraging your community association to include physical activity on their agenda is one simple step that could go a long way. Many organizations can provide support or advice, including your local recreation department, community planners or exercise professionals. Committing to making physical activity an easy choice in your community will lead to a greater sense of belonging, happier and healthier citizens and ultimately a more stable and supportive society.
