Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada

Welcome to the October 2016 Recreation & Culture Guide As nature puts on her autumn show of colour in our urban forest, the air becomes crisper and winter coats make another appearance. We are all looking forward to enjoying time with family and friends during the Thanksgiving holiday and the Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey season! No doubt about it - all signs point to the transition from summer to fall. This transition brings with it a wide variety of activities and events which can be found in this month’s Recreation & Culture Guide. Spanning the arts, culture and sporting events there is something for everyone. You can plan your month in advance and have something to look forward to! You’ll definitely want to come over and check out the new ATB Centre at the west end of Whoop-Up Drive. It’s the new home of the Lethbridge Curling Club, Lethbridge Figure Skating Club and Lethbridge Minor Hockey and you will be impressed with the facility’s beautiful layout and design. Drop in and visit the concessions for snacks or a light meal and take in all the activity as a participant or a spectator. This leisure centre is yours to enjoy! One of City Council's goals within our strategic plan is to encourage and enhance citizen engagement. I'm happy to say we are trying some innovative new ways to help make it easier and more inviting to become an engaged citizen. On Wednesday, October 12th we invite you to City Hall for 100K DAY between 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. to talk about our future as our population approaches 100,000. There will be food, kids’ activities, giveaways, presentations. Most importantly, we want to give you the opportunity to contribute your thoughts about how we should grow, how we can protect our environment, share ideas to celebrate our past and plan for the future of Lethbridge. Just because the weather is cooler and little more damp doesn’t mean you’re stuck in the house. Enjoy perusing this month’s Leisure Guide and find some inspiration to fill your leisure time with enjoyable activities. I hope to see you out and about this month!

ABOUT THE POOLS FAQ’s - Registration

What is the process to register my child(ren) for lessons? We utilize a staggered registration process for lessons at Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik Pools. Registration will open for one facility first. When registration opens for that pool you can call in or go to anyone of 3 pools (Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran or Stan Siwik). All locations will be taking registration for that particular facility. The following week registration will open for the other facility and again all locations will be taking registration for that facility. Registration for the Winter 2017 Sessions begins as follows: Nicholas Sheran Pool - begins on Tuesday Nov 8, 2016 @ 9:00am Stan Siwik Pool - begins on Tuesday Nov 15, 2016 @ 9:00am Registration can be done in person and/or by phone. Neither form of registration takes precedent over the other - it is first come first served. If registering by phone please do not leave a message. Additional staff are added at both locations to speed up the process as much as possible. Please note that registration is an ongoing process and does not necessarily need to be done on the first day. On-line Registration is coming A new software provider has been selected and the City has begun the process of transitioning to this new software. We can expect to see on-line registration sometime in 2017.

Legends of southern Alberta

Did You Know?

It’s October, the days are getting shorter and there is more time for things to go bump in the night. A great time to share a few legends of southern Alberta. Are these true? We don’t know. You may want to try and discover the truth yourself. But if you go looking, obey the rules and stay safe. Is a fortune of gold waiting to be discovered in the Crowsnest area? Two prospectors, Frank Lemon and Blackjack discovered an enormous gold find somewhere near the Crowsnest Pass. Blinded with greed, Lemon killed Blackjack. A curse was put on him and the mine and no one has ever been able to find the Lost Lemon mine again. In fact, they say you’ll go crazy if you even get too close to the spot. Is there alcohol buried, waiting to be found? Stories have abounded over the past 140+ years as to what happened to the whiskey at Fort Whoop-Up when the Mounted Police arrived? Was it buried nearby? Was it floated down the river and cached until the police left? Or was it all drunk in anticipation of the arrival of the Force? Many people have done illegal digging on private property at the old fort site hoping to find something. But nothing has ever been uncovered.

14

(Personally, I think it went down river to be hid until it could be retrieved.)

Site of Fort Whoop-Up, 2009.

Did a mass murderer spend her final days in the Pincher area? The Bender family was implicated in a series of gruesome murders in Kansas, killing visitors at their road-side inn. The entire family disappeared before they could be arrested. Stories persist that Kate, the daughter, moved to Montana where she married a wealthy rancher. When her husband died, she conspired with the foreman to murder her step-son to inherit the money; the two moved to the Pincher area, keeping to themselves. Shucks, running out of space so no room to write of the things people have reported in the St. Mary’s Reservoir…

Merlin  

Did you know? The merlin is a small falcon, about 30 centimetres long.

Merlins range throughout North America, and can migrate as far south as South America in the winter.

 Average flight speed of 48km per hour

Highly territorial

Merlins are fairly tolerant of humans and many will nest close to cities or farms. However, if the nest is approached too closely, the nesting pair will defend it vigorously.

Larger than kestrels

Populations are stable and seem to have recovered from twentieth-century declines related to use of pesticide DDT

Merlin have sharply pointed wings, a broad chest, and a medium length tail with a dark grey and brown streaking colouration. You are likely to spot a Merlin in one of two poses: resting on a treetop scanning the horizon for its next meal; or cruising at top speed in pursuit of its next meal. Merlins will use surprise attacks to bring down small songbirds and shorebirds. It is not uncommon to see a Merlin attack from below chasing their prey upwards until they tire. Occasionally Merlins will work together to hunt large flocks of waxwings. While Merlin are fairly widespread, it can be difficult to observe them given their unpredictable behaviour. Merlin can cover a lot of ground very quickly! Be sure to look quick after hearing their shrill chattering 4-second call.

Don't let colder weather keep you from getting outside! The weather may be cooling off with autumn in full swing, but that doesn’t mean we still can’t get outside and enjoy some fresh air. October is International Walk to School Month and we are challenging students and the community to embrace active transport by walking or biking to school and work during October. Walking to school not only gives children an opportunity to get active and prepared for the day, but it also gives parents and teachers an opportunity to connect with their children, co-workers and the environment. Statistics show that just seven per cent of Canadian children and youth are meeting daily physical activity requirements, while just 28% of students currently walk to school. This is in contrast to 58% of parents who said they walked to school in their youth. Spending time outside has many health benefits, from improving cognitive abilities to relieving symptoms of illnesses such as depression and anxiety. So bundle up and get ready to hear the leaves crunching underneath your feet this fall.

For more information call 403-382-6919 or go to lethbridgecollege.ca/befitforlife

Here are some Be Fit for Life approved tips for a successful commute or walk to class: • Understand the rules of the road. Safety should always come first. • Form a Walking School Bus, where a group of students is led by a designated adult. • Try a pedometer challenge and make the journey more fun by counting your steps.

Everyone Welcome!! What is Sledge Hockey?

It is similar to traditional hockey with a few sport specific modifications. Players sit in a specially designed sled with two regular sized hockey skate blades that allow the puck to pass underneath. They also use two sticks which have metal picks on the end which are used to propel the players on the ice. It can be a great work out and tons of FUN. We host company/group team building ice times.

Who can play Sledge Hockey? YOU CAN! Individuals with disabilities, as well as able bodied players…all ages & abilities.
