Queen Elizabeth II, the Lethbridge City Police and a 50 th Anniversary
Did You Know ?
Fifty years ago this September – 2 September 1966 to be precise – the Lethbridge City Police received authorization from Queen Elizabeth II to use a very specific crown as part of its crest. “According to James H. Carpenter’s 1975 book, The Badge and the Blotter, Chief Constable George Harvey and Constable Leonard J. John in 1947 designed the first distinctive crest for the Lethbridge city police. At the base a gold ribbon inscribed ‘Lethbridge’ is arched over a gold beaver. Above is a blue shield center with the Coat-of-Arms of the City of Lethbridge, also in gold. The shield is flanked with green maple leaves and the gold ribbon at the top has the word ‘Police’ in black letters. The first design included a crown at the top in gold, silver, blue and red, similar to St. David’s crown. King George VI, the monarch at the time, used this crown. When Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne, she chose to use St. Edward’s crown. Authorization to use the St. Edward crown was sought and on 2 September 1966 Police Chief J.H. Carpenter was advised in a letter from Deputy Registrar General of Canada ‘that Her Majesty has
14
been pleased to approve the use of the crown as proposed.’” (1987 Lethbridge Historical Society newsletter) So the next time you see the Lethbridge City Police Crest, take note that you are looking at a crest with a long and regal history.
The Lethbridge City Police crest uses the St. Edward's Crown. Permission to use this crown on the crest had to be received by Queen Elizabeth II and permission was received fifty years ago this year.

Dr. Mark Ragins
October 27, 2016 | Lethbridge Coast Hotel Workshop 9am-4pm, $100 pre-register (doors open at 8am, lunch & refreshments provided)
Throughout this workshop, Dr. Ragins will discuss: Different conceptual models of recovery and how they apply to working with people with severe mental illnesses How the three core recovery transformations (from illness centered to person centered, from professionally-driven to clientdriven collaboration, and from deficit-based to strengths-based building resilience) impact how we see our clients and our treatment plans Break down the process of recovery into three stages that people go through as they move from a river of suffering to reintegration into the community (engagement, rebuilding, and arriving), along three dimensions (personal, relationships, and roles) How to track people’s progress in recovery and use specifically targeted person-centered interventions to promote their recovery How recovery-based programs and a comprehensive recovery-based system of care can be developed.

New Facilities offer extra benefits to dancers and parents One of the most important features of a dance studio is the type of dance flooring used. The new facility now has four large air conditioned dance studios with floating “Timestep” floors. These floors are used by the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. They have hundreds of compression foam blocks under the surface that absorb the impact of dancing and help keep teachers and dancers more energized. They also aid in injury prevention. There are full mirrors throughout the studio to help students observe their movements while learning and two levels of ballet barres to accommodate the differing heights of the dancers. The dance rooms have a clean air exchange system to help students breathe easily while dancing. There is a comfortable waiting area for parents and siblings to view classes, a large change room space for the dancers and over 40 off street parking stalls. Exisdance approaches the art of dance with passion and strives to provide a positive and creative atmosphere. Students are encouraged to have fun while expanding their skills. Due to the expansion of teaching times, the additional studios and staff, Exisdance will be accepting new registrations now and throughout the early fall. For more information contact the school at 403 320 – 1593 or visit them at www.exisdance.com for helpful information on getting started in dance classes.

Exisdance Studio is expanding further in its new location to offer more diverse programs and convenient class times to the residents of Lethbridge. According to School Director Janielle Scott, the school has grown more quickly than anticipated since opening in 2003. The fast growth is due to a dedication to providing convenient, high-quality instruction to its students. The school was Voted #1 Best of the Best Dance Studio in 2016. Last year the school moved to its new state of the art facility located at 461 41 Street S. Students and parents were ecstatic with the new studio which was designed specifically for dance. Due to the many new students enrolling, the school is adding another dance room this fall to accommodate more classes for beginners. Prospective students can check out the school throughout the summer during Open House times from 4-8pm Monday to Thursday.

More of her work can be seen on www.kcadams.net.
Opening reception September 10th at CASA, 5:00-7:00pm IINNII wishes to thank the City of Lethbridge, Allied Arts Council, University of Lethbridge, ATB, CMARD, Pattison Signs and CASA for the generous support.
IINNII is a First Nations Artist Run Centre that was inspired by the historic signing of The Buffalo Treaty and agreement of cooperation, renewal, and restoration. IINNII was formed in Lethbridge in 2015, and means Buffalo in the Blackfoot Language. As a local non-profit group, IINNII endeavors to present and promote an autonomous voice by presenting projects and programming that speak to social and political issues concerning FNMI artists and the environment around us. IINNII operates without a specific space and is dedicated to forming partnerships within our community to expand knowledge of indigenous art within Lethbridge and beyond.
IINNII's inaugural exhibition, PERCEPTION, can be viewed on Billboards, Bus
Shelters and Buses around Lethbridge, as well as the exterior digital gallery on the large exterior screen at CASA for the month of September.

Everyone Welcome!! What is Sledge Hockey?
It is similar to traditional hockey with a few sport specific modifications. Players sit in a specially designed sled with two regular sized hockey skate blades that allow the puck to pass underneath. They also use two sticks which have metal picks on the end which are used to propel the players on the ice. It can be a great work out and tons of FUN. We host company/group team building ice times.
Who can play Sledge Hockey?
YOU CAN! Individuals with disabilities, as well as able bodied players…all ages & abilities.
