ABOUT THE POOLS Don’t put the “Pee” in Pool!
FAQ’s - Take the “Pee” out of Pool
One in five of us will do the unthinkable: take a leak in the pool. This lazy act is more than gross, though. It results in toxic chemicals, albeit in very small amounts. “There’s this perception that peeing in a pool is okay because there’s chlorine, and that’s just not true,” says Ernest Blatchley, a chemical engineer at Purdue University. In a pool, chlorine’s job is to kill bacteria. It does not take care of bodily functions. In fact, it readily reacts with uric acid, the nitrogen containing chemical that gives urine its name. The resulting compounds are cyanogen chloride (CNCl) and trichloramine (NCl3), which are potentially hazardous and present in every pool Blatchley has sampled for the past 10 years. His most recent study, published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, shows that 93 percent of the uric acid used to make these compounds comes from human urine (sweat also contains uric acid). And it does not take very much pee to drive levels of these chemicals above acceptable limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: a previous study found that levels of trichloramine rose by a factor of four after swim meets. Other scientists have found frequent exposure to trichloramine and cyanogen chloride in pools - like swimmers and lifeguards experience - raises the likelihood of asthma and other respiratory problems, although these links require more study. So if the ick factor isn’t enough already, please, don’t pee in the pool. (Carrie Arnold - Scientific American Aug 2014)

Bands It would be impossible to mention all of the bands that have played in Lethbridge so just a few quick stories. The first musical band in Lethbridge was the Lethbridge Colliery band that formed in the 1880s under Professor Malacord. The band had 20 players and band uniforms were leftovers from the American Civil War.
In the early 1900s Lethbridge residents were entertained by the Lethbridge Citizens Band. The band won a prize at the Winnipeg Exposition in 1909. Starting in the 1920s big band music became popular and whether local or visiting, Lethbridge saw some of the best of the dance bands.
One of the premier dance bands in Canada during the 1930s and 1940s was Mart Kenney and His Western Gentlemen. Lethbridge played a small, but significant, role in the band’s musical history. “In 1934, during a rehearsal for a playing date at Henderson Lake, Lethbridge, the band tried Bert Lister’s arrangement of “The West, a Nest and You, Dear.” The song became Mart Kenney’s theme song and was been played for every stage and radio show. Whether at the Trianon or the Henderson Pavilion or any of the many other dance halls, Lethbridge has enjoyed incredible musical talent for well over a century.

Joining Forces Again for Christmas www. ChristmasHope.ca Once again, Interfaith Food Bank, Lethbridge Food Bank and Salvation Army will join forces to ensure that less fortunate members of our community get everything they need for a Merry Christmas. Because we share clientele, we will work together to serve over 1700 households this Christmas, making the most of our resources and eliminating the duplication of services. This year we expect to assist as many as 2500 adults and 1700 children. Christmas Hampers - Christmas Hampers will be standardized and will include day to day food and holiday goodies, regardless of which agency clients access. Visit our joint website, www.ChristmasHope.ca for our wishlist items. Food and Toy Collections and Fund-raising— Each agency will be required to recruit support from within the community to come up with all of the supplies and resources required for this joint project. Donors can contribute at any location and we will arrange for proper distribution. Please note: While we are working together on this Christmas Project, we still have requirements to meet on an individual organization basis. Food and Cash donations should be made to your charity of choice.

Christmas Bird Count Did you know?
“Prior to the turn of the 20th century, people engaged in a holiday tradition known as the Christmas “Side Hunt”: They would choose sides and go afield with their guns; whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won.
This year is the 116th annual Christmas Bird Count. Are conducted between December 14th and January 5, inclusive dates, each season. Each count takes place in the same established 15-mile (24km) wide diameter circle every year. CBCs are a critical part of Citizen Science. Data provided helps researchers, biologists and wildlife agencies to study the long-term health and status of bird populations across North America. Lethbridge CBC averages 41 different species per count. 11,608 Canada Geese were counted in 2014. Mallards, Pigeons, Magpies, Chickadees, Starlings, Bohemian Waxwings, House Finches and House Sparrows are some of the most frequent birds counted.
Are you interested Conservation was in its beginning stages around that era, in participating? and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on More information can be found Christmas Day 1900, ornithologist Frank M. Chapman, an on the Audubon or Bird Studies early officer in the then nascent Audubon Society, Canada websites or you can proposed a new holiday tradition – a “Christmas Bird contact the Lethbridge CBC Compiler Ken Orich at Census” – that would count birds during the holidays korich@telusplanet.net rather than hunt them.

How can the snow help improve our abdominal muscles? With the first snowfall under our belts, it is very tempting to just stay indoors, bundle up and watch a favorite movie. Resist the temptation to avoid physical activity in these colder months and instead find your warmest pair of gloves, grab a toque, put on your winter jacket and get outdoors. There are many ways to keep healthy and fit in the winter. For example, snow and ice can create uneven and slippery surfaces, just walking outdoors can help improve your strength and balance as you engage your core muscles (make sure you have a pair of boots with good grip to help with stability). Here is a list of a couple winter activities for the whole family: Sledding Cross-country or downhill skiing Downhill skiing Ice skating Snowshoeing Playing in the snow Snow tubing Touch football Ice hockey
